How to combine two identical fields into one for accurate results - sql-server

I don't know how to explain this but I'll try hard. I have code that sends a friend request to another user of a site I'm developing. and there are two email fields for that which is the req_email (for the requestor) and the resp_email (for the responder). the code I currently have displays friends of the sender field alone. But sometimes the sender can also be a responder since others may send him requests.
SELECT CASE WHEN status = 'Yes' THEN 'Friends'
ELSE CASE WHEN status = 'No' THEN 'Request Sent'
ELSE CASE WHEN status IS NULL THEN 'Send Request' END
END
END AS Answer,
*
FROM dbo.profile p
LEFT JOIN friends f On p.email = f.[resp_email] AND f.[req_email] = MMColParam
WHERE fname LIKE %varsearch%
AND email NOT LIKE MMColParam2
ORDER BY fname ASC
Now my issue is how to combine both the sender_email and the responder email as one so the results are returned in one instance

Your query is wrong. please check following query:
SELECT CASE WHEN status = 'Yes' THEN 'Friends'
WHEN status = 'No' THEN 'Request Sent'
WHEN status IS NULL THEN 'Send Request'
END AS Answer,
*
FROM dbo.profile p
LEFT JOIN friends f On p.email = f.[resp_email] AND f.[req_email] = MMColParam
WHERE fname LIKE '%varsearch%'
AND email NOT LIKE 'MMColParam2'
ORDER BY fname ASC

Get data from a table after joining based on null value of joined table using LINQ

I have some tables like "Job" "AppliedJob" "JobOffer" "Contract" "Employeer"
Description: When employeer post job it is stored in "Job" table with his ID. If a freelancer apply to the job it is stored in "AppliedJob" table with his ID. Then Employeer sees the application and send offer to the freelancer and it is stored in "JobOffer" table. If freelancer accept the offer it is then stored in "Contract" table. At first in "Contract" ContractID, OfferID and StratDate are stored and CompletedDate is stored as null. When the contract is completed the CompletedDate field is modified with date.
Want: I want to return all jobs with no completed contract
I tried:
[HttpGet]
[Route("api/PrivateApi/GetEmployeerPostedJob/")]
public object GetEmployeerPostedJob(int id)
{
var data = (from j in db.Jobs
where j.EmployeerID == id
join apl in db.AppliedJobs
on j.JobID equals apl.JobID
join o in db.JobOffers
on apl.AppliedJobID equals o.AppliedJobID
join con in db.Contracts
on o.OfferID equals con.OfferID
where con.CompletedDate == null
select new
{
j.JobTitle,
j.JobID,
j.Budget,
j.Deadline,
j.Employeer,
j.JobDetails,
j.PublishDate,
j.ReqSkill,
j.NoOFFreelancer,
j.Preference,
Category1=j.Category,
totalAppliedFreelancer=(from aple in db.AppliedJobs where j.JobID ==aple.JobID select aple).Count(),
Category = (from gg in db.Categories where gg.CategoryID == j.Category select gg.CategoryName).FirstOrDefault()
}).ToList();
return data.AsEnumerable();
}
But it returns no jobs.
How can i get all jobs which are not completed yet(CompletedDate == null in Contract table)?
I want to show the employeer's posted jobs on his page but only those jobs that are not completed
The above (die to one to many relationships involved) can be paraphrased as
return all jobs with no completed contract
while the way you wrote the query, besides the possible data duplication, it answers the question
return all jobs with existing, but not completed contract
i.e. is missing the jobs w/o applied job, applied job w/o offer and offer w/o contract.
The correct query would be something like this:
from job in db.Jobs
where job.EmployeerID == id
join jobContract in (
from appliedJob in db.AppliedJobs
join offer in db.JobOffers on appliedJob.AppliedJobID equals offer.AppliedJobID
join contract in db.Contracts on offer.OfferID equals contract.OfferID
select new { appliedJob, offer, contract }
) on job.JobID equals jobContract.appliedJob.JobID into jobContracts
where !jobContracts.Any(jobContract => jobContract.contract.CompletedDate != null)
select ...
The query could further be simplified by using navigation properties, but since I don't see navigation properties between AppliedJob and JobOffer, I'm leaving that for you.
Update: Here is the same query with navigation properties (by simplified I meant no need for join operators):
from job in db.Jobs
let completedContracts =
from appliedJob in job.AppliedJobs
from offer in appliedJob.JobOffers
from contract in offer.Contracts
where contract.CompletedDate != null
select contract
where !completedContracts.Any()
select ...
This LINQ query doesn't work on live server (sql-2008) But works on my local VS 2013. Is there any mistake if my live database is empty at first time?

Returning empty venue data in FQL?

My problem is that it seems for a few events there is simply no venue data at all.. for example this event (code):
SELECT name, location, attending_count, venue, eid FROM event WHERE eid = '447067818737101'
Is it possible to search for events where no venue data exists, like addig this to the code and the result still appear?
SELECT name, location, attending_count, venue, eid FROM event WHERE eid = '447067818737101'
AND venue.city = NULL OR venue.city = ""
My goal is to select from many event results ONLY the ones WITHOUT venue.city data in the final code!
UPDATE:
Solution for those who may have problems with events where venue data is not available:
strlen(venue.city) = 0 , if no city in venue struct it is simply equal to zero length string, and this surely works on other missing venue elements.
I think the problem is with your use of AND and OR operator. You must know that AND operator has a precedence over OR operator. Therefore, your query will be executed as:
SELECT name, location, attending_count, venue, eid FROM event WHERE (eid = '447067818737101' AND venue.city = NULL) OR venue.city = ""
So instead, you can try:
SELECT name, location, attending_count, venue, eid FROM event WHERE eid = '447067818737101' AND venue.city IS NULL

Need to use information from one qry to dictate an action on another

Ok so this is going to sound a little complicated. I want to somehow put some kind of function that will divide a table value by two when its Policy number matches up with a policy number in another table.
Here is the query where I want that functions
SELECT
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.POLICY_NO,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.PHASE_CODE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SUB_PHASE_CODE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SchedNP,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.ProdType,
Sum(qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SumOfAMOUNT_INFORCE) AS SumOfSumOfAMOUNT_INFORCE,
Sum(qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SumOfPUA_FACE) AS SumOfSumOfPUA_FACE,
Sum(qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SumOfOYT_FACE) AS SumOfSumOfOYT_FACE, TotalDPA = sum(case when qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfNetDefExtraAdj] Is Null then qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfNetDefPremiumAdj] else qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfNetDefPremiumAdj] +qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfNetDefExtraAdj] end),
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SumOfGROSS_ANNLZD_PREM,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SumOfStatNetPremium,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfStatNetPremium]/qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfGROSS_ANNLZD_PREM] AS NetToGrossRatio,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.NetvsGrossInd,
DPA_NetPrem = case when qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[NetvsGrossInd]='Net' then sum(qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfStatNetPremium]) else sum([qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy].[SumOfGROSS_ANNLZD_PREM]) end,
qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.ReinType AS ReinType,
Sum(qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.ReinsAmount) AS SumOfReinsAmount,
qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.[ReinsAmount]/(qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfAMOUNT_INFORCE]+qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfOYT_FACE]+qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfPUA_FACE]) AS [Reins%],
qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.ReinsStatRsv AS ReinsStatRsv,
Sum(qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.SumOfGROSS_ANNLZD_PREM) AS ReinsPrem, qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.PAID_TO_DATE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.VAL_DATE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.ISSUE_DATE
FROM qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re RIGHT JOIN
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy
ON
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.POLICY_NO = qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.POLICY_NO
AND qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.PHASE_CODE = qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.PHASE_CODE AND
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SUB_PHASE_CODE= qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.SUB_PHASE_CODE
GROUP BY
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.POLICY_NO,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.PHASE_CODE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SUB_PHASE_CODE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SchedNP,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.ProdType,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SumOfGROSS_ANNLZD_PREM,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.SumOfStatNetPremium,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfStatNetPremium]/qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfGROSS_ANNLZD_PREM],
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.NetvsGrossInd,
qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.ReinType,
qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.[ReinsAmount]/(qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfAMOUNT_INFORCE]+qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfOYT_FACE]+qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.[SumOfPUA_FACE]),
qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.ReinsStatRsv,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.PAID_TO_DATE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.VAL_DATE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1_izzy.ISSUE_DATE
GO
and this is the qry that contains the policy numbers that I want divided by 2 in the above qry.
SELECT
qryReinsuranceDPA1.POLICY_NO,
qryReinsuranceDPA1.PHASE_CODE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1.SUB_PHASE_CODE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1.ProdType,
TotalDPA = Sum(case when [SumOfNetDefExtraAdj] Is Null then [SumOfNetDefPremiumAdj] else [SumOfNetDefPremiumAdj] + SumOfNetDefExtraAdj end),
Sum(1) AS Expr1
FROM qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re RIGHT JOIN qryReinsuranceDPA1
ON
qryReinsuranceDPA1.POLICY_NO = qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.POLICY_NO AND
qryReinsuranceDPA1.PHASE_CODE= qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.PHASE_CODE AND
qryReinsuranceDPA1.SUB_PHASE_CODE = qryPolicyListforNYDefPRemAsset_Re.SUB_PHASE_CODE
GROUP BY qryReinsuranceDPA1.POLICY_NO,
qryReinsuranceDPA1.PHASE_CODE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1.SUB_PHASE_CODE,
qryReinsuranceDPA1.ProdType
HAVING (((Sum(1))<>1))
GO
quick example. Say that the Policy number 064543200 is located in the results of that second qry. I then want the number located in first qry in Total DPA assosciated with that Policy number to be divided by 2.
If this is still confusing please let me know and I will try to explain better. Both are views.

How can I add text to my column's select statement

I want to prepend text to sql select,
I can do this:
SELECT (1328724983-time)/60/60 AS status
FROM voting
WHERE account = 'ThElitEyeS' AND vid = 1
This will show time left.
What I'd like to do is this though:
SELECT 'Please try after' + (1328724983-time)/60/60 AS status
FROM voting
WHERE account = 'ThElitEyeS' AND vid = 1
Is there any way I can accomplish this?
Just use cast or convert to convert it all to varchar for instance.
SELECT 'Please try after' + CAST((1328724983-time)/60/60 as varchar(80)) AS status
FROM voting
WHERE account = 'ThElitEyeS' AND vid = 1;
See the MSDN on Cast / Convert
Based on your comments you can do:
SELECT 'Please try again after' + CAST(MyColForHours as varchar(25)) + ' hours', AnyOtherColumns FROM Table
Was trying this today and getting an error
SQL0420N Invalid character found in a character string argument of the function "DECFLOAT". SQLSTATE=22018
Apparently we now need to use || instead of + to join the sections.

Dynamic column value with group by (sql server and Linq)

i have a table Plan with following sample data
i want to aggregate the result by PlanMonth and for PlanStatus i want that if any of its (in a group) values is Drafted i get drafted in the result and Under Approval otherwise. i have done it using following query
select PlanMonth, case when Flag=1 then 'Drafted' else 'Under Approval' end as PlanStatus
from
(select p.PlanMonth, Max(CASE WHEN p.PlanStatus = 'Drafted' THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) Flag
from Plans p
group by p.PlanMonth
) inquery
i have consulted this blog post. Is there something wrong with it? Moreover, if someone can help me translate it to linq i will be grateful
The query you have will work.
With the sample data you have provided it can be simplified a bit.
select p.PlanMonth,
min(p.PlanStatus) as PlanStatus
from Plans as p
group by p.PlanMonth
This will not work if you have values in PlanStatus that is alphabetically sorted before Drafted.
Following Linq query worked for me
return (from p in db.mktDrVisitPlans
group p by p.PlanMonth into grop
select
new VMVisitPlan
{
PlanMonth = grop.Key
PlanStatus = grop.Any(x=>x.p.PlanStatus == "Drafted")?"Hold":"Under Approval",
}).ToList();
