React useEffect with Stripe - get client secret asynchronously - reactjs

I've been plopped into the middle of a react project with no prior knowledge so I'm sure this a duplicate.
I want to use the StripeElements, and the react library is easy enough. I'm just not sure how to get the client secret from the server.
This is what I'm trying:
const stripePromise = loadStripe('stripe_key');
const StripeForm = () => {
const [stripeData, setStripeData] = useState({});
const getClientSecret = async () => {
const { data } = await api.get(`payment/stripe/get-client-secret/`);
return data
}
useEffect(() => {
getClientSecret().then(data => setStripeData(data))
}, [])
if(stripeData.clientSecret) {
return (
<QuoteContainer title={"Pay With Credit Card"}>
<SectionCard>
{stripeData.clientSecret}
</SectionCard>
</QuoteContainer>
);
}
return (<b>Loading</b>)
}
The route payment/stripe/get-client-secret/ returns an array with a key 'clientSecret'. This function is working correctly.
I just can't get the <b>Loading</b> text to be replaced with the QuoteContainer component once the promise is resolved.

If you want to rendering Loading component. You have to set falsy value for stripedData state. Because {} value is truthy. So I think the code is not rendering Loading component. The loading component is not rendered because there is no place to set it as a false value anywhere.

what AJAX library are you using to make the API call? Usually you need to call a function on the response object in order to access the data. For instance, if you are using fetch(), you need to call json() then access the response data.

Why "React hook is called in a function" while exporting simple single function that accesses a useAtom state?

I have this simple function that needs to set a state from jotai. I would like this function to have it's own seperate file or be cleaned up somewhere, since it will be reused. I'm new to React and come from Angular. It's kind of a function in a service Angular wise.
How would you solve this properly in React?
Code:
export const setMetamaskWallet = (): void => {
const [, setWeb3] = useAtom(web3Atom);
const [, setLoading] = useAtom(loadingAtom);
const [wallet, setWallet] = useAtom(walletAtom);
setWeb3(
new Web3(window.ethereum),
)
//Todo: Create check if metamask is in browser, otherwise throw error
const setAccount = async () => {
setLoading(true);
const accounts = await window.ethereum.request(
{
method: 'eth_requestAccounts'
},
);
setWallet(
accounts[0],
);
setLoading(false);
}
if (!wallet) {
setAccount();
}
}
Hooks can only be called in React functional components or other hooks. Here it appears you have called it in a typical function, hence the error. You could package this functionality in a custom hook. It may however be most appropriate to keep this function as it is, and instead of calling hooks within it, pass the relevant data into the function as parameters.

How to setup a function which gets app settings and sets it as localStorage before the page loads. (next.js)

I've been working on a Next.JS web application for the past couple of days but I've reached a problem. The app has an API call (/api/settings) which returns some settings about the application from the database. Currently, I have a function which returns these settings and access to the first component:
App.getInitialProps = async () => {
const settingsRequest = await fetch(
`${process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL}/api/settings`
);
const settingsResponse = await settingsRequest.json();
return { settings: settingsResponse };
};
This does work and I am able to pass in settings to components but there are two problems with this:
I need to nest the prop through many components to reach the components that I need
This request runs every time a page is reloaded/changed
Essentially, I need to create a system that does this:
runs a function in the _app.tsx getInitialProps to check if the data is already in localStorage, if not make the API request and update localStorage
have the localStorage value accessible from a custom hook.
Right now the problem with this is that I do not have access to localStorage from the app.tsx getInitialProps. So if anyone has an alternative to run this function before any of the page loads, please let me know.
Thanks!
I found a solution, it might be a janky solution but I managed to get it working and it might be useful for people trying to achieve something similar:
First we need to create a "manager" for the settings:
export const checkIfSettingsArePresent = () => {
const settings = localStorage.getItem("app_settings");
if (settings) return true;
return false;
};
export const getDataAndUpdateLocalStorage = async () => {
const r = await fetch(`${process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL}/api/settings`);
const response = await r.json();
localStorage.setItem("app_settings", JSON.stringify(response));
};
With that created we can add a UseEffect hook combined with a useState hook that runs our function.
const [doneFirst, setDoneFirst] = useState<boolean>(false);
useEffect(() => {
const settingsPreset = checkIfSettingsArePresent();
if (performance.navigation.type != 1)
if (settingsPreset) return setDoneFirst(true);
const getData = async () => {
await getDataAndUpdateLocalStorage();
setDoneFirst(true);
};
getData();
}, []);
//any other logic
if (!doneFirst) {
return null;
}
The final if statement makes sure to not run anything else before the function.
Now, whenever you hot-reload the page, you will see that the localStorage app_settings is updated/created with the values from the API.
However, to access this more simply from other parts of the app, I created a hook:
import { SettingsType } from "#sharex-server/common";
export default function useSettings() {
const settings = localStorage.getItem("app_settings") || {
name: "ShareX Media Server",
};
//#ts-ignore
return JSON.parse(settings) as SettingsType;
}
Now I can import useSettings from any function and have access to my settings.

My react component never displays the information from the database

I have a small web app displays game information.
I am using React hooks so that the component is modern.
When this component loads, I want it to connect to the api via axios, and get the description of the game.
But when it loads, the value inside the <GameVault /> is always null.
When I look in the database, it is not null. If I hit the api directly, it does return the game description.
My console.log is hit twice for some reason. The first time it's null, the second time it has the needed value.
I am also not getting any errors, so I don't know why this isn't working.
Here is the code:
const Vault = ({ game }) => {
const [gameText, setGameText] = useState(null);
async function fetchGameText() {
const response = await axios.get(`/api/gamermag/${game.id}/gameDescriptionText`);
setGameText(response.data);
}
useEffect(() => {
fetchGameText();
}, []);
console.log("gameText: ", gameText);
const gamerValue = useMemo(() => {
return gameText ? gameText : "";
}, [gameText]);
return (
<GameVault value={gamerValue} />
)
}
export default Vault;
Is there a way to get this to work?
Thanks!
You need to wait for the data to load from the server. While the data is being fetched, gameText will be null and when it's done fetching, it stores the response. That is why your console.log hit twice. The first time is the component's first render, and the second time is when the gameText changes its state which caused a rerender.
You need to add logic to wait for the data.
if(!gameText){
return <div>loading...</div>
}

How to fix multiple call fetch data in forEach() using React Hooks

In react Hooks, I am trying to fetch data from the API array but in the Foreach function, the API call causes infinity.
How to fix this?
const [symbols, setSymbols] = useState([]);
getPortfolioSymbolList(portfolio_name).then(data => data.json()).then(res => {
res.forEach((symbol_data)=>{
fetchPrice(symbol_data.symbol).then(price => {
setSymbols(price);
});
})
}
function fetchPrice(symbol){
const price = fetch(`api_url`)
.then(chart => chart.json())
return price;
}
Here, call fetchPrice() causes in infinite.
Setting the state will always cause a rerender
What happens in your code is the request is made and then the data is set causing a rerender. Then because of the rerender the request is made again and sets the state again and causes the rerender again.
If you have a request for data you probably want to put a React.useEffect so it only requests once.
React.useEffect(() => {
/* your data request and data set */
}, []); // the [] will only fire on mount.
Is is because your setSymbols call inside forEach makes component rerender (reload) - it means that all of your main component function is call again and again... getPortfolioSymbolList too. You have to use useEffect hook to resolve this problem. Your getPortfolioSymbolList() API call should be inside useEffect.
https://reactjs.org/docs/hooks-effect.html
PROBLEM
Your first symbol is updated in your API call, which triggers a re-render of the component calling the API call to go on an infinite loop.
SOLUTION
Wrap your API in your useEffect. The function inside your useEffect will only be called once. See useEffect docs here
You need to use for await of to loop asynchronously. forEach can't loop asynchronously. See for await of docs here
Update your symbols once all the data is collected.
function Symbols() {
const [symbols, setSymbols] = useState([]);
React.useEffect(() => {
async function fetchSymbols() {
const portfolio = await getPortfolioSymbolList(portfolio_name);
const jsonPortfolios = await data.json();
const symbols = [];
for await (let jsonPortfolio of jsonPortfolios) {
const price = await fetchPrice(jsonPortfolio.symbol);
symbols.push(price);
}
setSymbols(symbols);
}
fetchSymbols();
}, []);
return /** JSX **/
}

React: Stop hook from being called every re-rendering?

Somewhat new to React and hooks in React. I have a component that calls a communications hook inside of which a call to an API is made with AXIOS and then the JSON response is fed back to the component. The issue I'm having is the component is calling the hook like six times in a row, four of which of course come back with undefined data and then another two times which returns the expected JSON (the same both of those two times).
I did a quick console.log to double check if it was indeed the component calling the hook mulitple times or it was happening inside the hook, and it is the component.
How do I go about only have the hook called only once on demand and not multiple times like it is? Here's the part in question (not including the rest of the code in the widget because it doesn't pertain):
export default function TestWidget() {
//Fetch data from communicator
console.log("called");
const getJSONData = useCommunicatorAPI('https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/todos/1');
//Breakdown passed data
const {lastName, alertList, warningList} = getJSONData;
return (
<h1 id="welcomeTitle">Welcome {lastName}!</h1>
);
}
export const useCommunicatorAPI = (requestAPI, requestData) => {
const [{ data, loading, error }, refetch] = useAxios('https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/todos/1', []);
console.log("data in Communicator:", data);
return {data};
}
I would use the useEffect hook to do this on mount and whenever any dependencies of the request change (like if the url changed).
Here is what you will want to look at for useEffect
Here is what it might look like:
const [jsonData, setJsonData] = React.useState({})
const url = ...whatver the url is
React.useEffect(() => {
const doFetch = async () => {
const jsonData = await useAxios(url, []);;
setJsonData(jsonData)
}
doFetch();
}, [url])
...use jsonData from the useState
With the above example, the fetch will happen on mount and if the url changes.
Why not just use the hook directly?
export default function TestWidget() {
const [{ data, loading, error }, refetch] =
useAxios('https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/todos/1', []);
return (<h1 id="welcomeTitle">Welcome {lastName}!</h1>);
}
the empty array [] makes the hook fire once when called
Try creating a function with async/await where you fetch the data.
Here can you learn about it:
