I am a windows user, I have git, node and yarn installed. Which are required to create my React application and I get an error which aborts the installation. Can you tell me how to solve it, because I have installed and uninstalled node and git which one of the two I think is causing problems or missing folders?

Check that you're not trying to import gitignore somewhere in your project by accident. Do a search for it across all of your code files.
You might want to try the suggestions from this post: React: create-react-app fails with error "Cannot find module 'lodash'".
That is, run:
npm cache clean --force
npm i
npm i -g create-react-app
And then try this command again:
npx create-react-app my-app
clear yarn cache
type this command in your terminal:
yarn cache clean
I am using Linux and I want to know if I can check what version of angular-material am using. I'm using bower for installing/updating packages.
Looks like you can use npm ls #angular/material to tell you the exact version.
If installed with npm
npm list #angular/material
If installed with yarn
yarn list #angular/material
If installed with bower, as in OP case
You can check out what version of angular-material you use by opening the following file:
bower_components/angular-material/bower.json
which will display something like that:
{
"name": "angular-material",
"version": "0.11.0",
...
}
Or as Matt pointed, use bower list, then lookup for angular-material.
if you have npm installed the following may help
npm angular/material -v
I normally use ng --version, this will list the version of everything I have installed
Package Version
--------------------------------------------------------------------
#angular-devkit/architect 0.803.26
#angular-devkit/build-angular 0.803.26
#angular-devkit/build-optimizer 0.803.26
#angular-devkit/build-webpack 0.803.26
#angular-devkit/core 8.3.26
#angular-devkit/schematics 8.3.26
#angular/cdk 8.2.3
#angular/cli 8.3.26
#angular/compiler-cli 8.2.14
#angular/material 8.2.3
#ngtools/webpack 8.3.26
#nguniversal/module-map-ngfactory-loader 8.1.1
#schematics/angular 8.3.26
#schematics/update 0.803.26
rxjs 6.5.4
typescript 3.5.3
webpack 4.39.2
To check the version of a bower package from the terminal, you can use bower list which will render a dependency tree like this one:
bower check-new Checking for new versions of the project dependencies...

In my example, angular-material is installed with version 0.11.2 (and I should update it to 1.0.5).
To process this (and a lot more) information via a node script, for example in Jenkins, you can use the --json parameter: bower list --json.
Go to your project, and open the following file:
node_modules/#angular/material/package.json
In this file, the ID contains the version installed for that project.
I must preface this question by saying that I am really new to Angular and Node. Following the directions from this Tuts+ tutorial, I cloned a sample Angular repo and then ran npm install. That yielded a massive list of errors, and then left my Terminal hanging for about 5 minutes. After that, I ran npm start and opened the sample app, which seemed to function just fine.
As I said, I'm very new to Angular and Node, so I don't know how to debug the errors I'm seeing, or if it's even something I should worry about. Any insight would be very helpful. Thanks!

Karma 0.10 incompatible with node 0.12
npm WARN engine karma#0.10.10: wanted: {"node":"~0.8 || ~0.10"} (current: {"node":"0.12.2","npm":"2.7.5"})
Switch to a node 0.10 version and the install will probably work.
If I understand your question correctly, the reason why got the errors is that your Node.js version does not match with Angular.js
karma#0.10.10: wanted: {"node":"~0.8 || ~0.10"} (current: {"node":"0.12.2","npm":"2.7.5"})
there is two way to fix your problem
Downgrade your Node.js version to match with Angular.js
Install nvm to switch your Node.js version
but i suggest you try the latter as it is an easy way to manage Node.js version using the nvm.
wanted: {"node":"~0.8 || ~0.10"} (current: {"node":"0.12.2","npm":"2.7.5"})
As per message, you need to to downgrade your node package, since the package is not compatible with the newest node. This can be achieved by the following commands:
npm install -g n
n 0.10.44
node --version
The n package interactively manages all your node versions.
To switch back to the latest, run: n latest.
