The problem is you set your PIVOT to look for values of nm in A, B, C, and D, but nm is an alias for fk_prj_project_id, which has possible values of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. So there are no A, B, C, or D values to be had. I don't even see a name for the column that holds A, B, C, and D, but whatever column that is needs to be what you put in the "FOR ___ IN" section of your pivot.
Test your query by commenting out the reference to the pivot columns in the SELECT and comment out the word PIVOT and everything after it and re-run your query. You should see some column with values A, B, C, D. If you don't, fix your query so you do. Once you do, that column is what you PIVOT on (put it between FOR and IN in the pivot block).
Oh, and if you provide data in a usable format people might run your query and give you directly usable results, it's a lot to ask to have people enter your data to get to help you so meet them half way. A link to sqlfiddle is ideal, but even just a bunch of DECLARE #T1 and INSERT INTO T1 VALUES statements is usually enough to get significantly better help.

OK, so using your data, we can test out actual queries. For PIVOT to work, we need a column to look up (employee name), a column to aggregate (activity_details), and some columns that will be constant across the rows produced (the project's name and ID). You're working with text not numbers, so your aggregation can't be mathematical, leaving you with pretty much just MAX or MIN. To make sure you get the right (newest) one, I first built a table of comments and numbered them by how new they were, then I picked just the newest comment for each (project, user) pair. cteCommentNewest is the result of that.
Now with a clean (and verified) table to pivot, the actual pivot syntax is simple. Well, as simple as Pivot can be, it's inherently pretty confusing IMHO, but structuring it this way keeps the actual PIVOT as clean as possible.
Note that the query is in twice, I tested it as a static query before converting it to dynamic because it's much easier to troubleshoot a static query, then I left it in in case you want to experiment with it. You don't need it for the final solution to work.

Wondering if you could help me with something. We get agency invoices for workers who worked for different clients on our behalf. Now these Invoices have worker's surname and Forenames in completely random order. Now my SSIS package import these invoices to a database. I am trying to automate few reports based on this data. Now i would like to Join this Invoice data with our data warehouse Employee and Shift table. Only fields i can join this on is Name and Shift date. How can i Join the DW Employee table to Imported Invoices as Names in Invoice tables are all over the place. Any nice SQL function that can help ,e. I have tried Joins using Concat and Like but it didn't work. Suggestions would be highly appreciated.

This is a real challenge for you. Others have already suggested that you might not want to do this, but I will give it a shot anyway. I think you need to create two parts, the first part and the second part, in both tables. Then you can compare them. The following code might lead you in the right direction:

As has already been said, this is a challenge with no good answer outside of a redesign. But, like SQL_M, I figured I'd try it. Assuming that dwEmployee is the source of record, I initially went with something similar to SQL_M's approach with this:

It works great until it hits a name that has three distinct parts... and then I couldn't be buggered to get it working - I'm leaving it here in case it helps you build on something.
I ended up using a CTE and STRING_SPLIT combination to make potential matches across the tables. You had mentioned that you can join on Shiftdate, but didn't say exactly how you wanted the results to look, and it seemed the name join was the big issue, so I just focused on that. Depending on what version of SQL you're on STRING_SPLIT might not be available to you, in which case you'd have to use a different split function to make this method work. My work days left column in SQL gets the right amount for that particular row, but I need it to sum itself and everything with a P value above it and then add that to today's date, while taking workdays into account. I don't see a Workday function in SQL from what I've been reading, so I'm wondering what are some creative solutions? Could perhaps a CASE statement be the answer to both of my questions? First, I've mocked up something to test SUM per your rationale, the idea is doing a self-JOIN and summing everything from that JOIN side, relying on the fact that NULLs will come up for anything that shouldn't be summed:

Second, workdays is a topic that comes up regularly. In case you didn't, consider reading a little about it from previous questions, I even posted an answer on one question last week, and the thread as a whole had several references.
Thirdly, we could use table definitions and sample data loaded on SQL itself, something like I did above.
Lastly, could you please check result of UtilizationPct / 100? If that's an integer-like data type, you're probably getting a bad result on it.

I tried to do the lot in a CTE.
However trying to "redefine" a rowset dynamically is a little tricky. While the task is relatively easy using dynamic SQL doing it without poses some issues.
While this answer may not be the most efficient or straight forward, or even correct in the sense that it's not all CTE it may give others a basis to work from.
To best understand my approach read the comments, but it might be worthwhile looking at each CTE expression in turn with by altering the bit of code below in the main block, with commenting out the section below it.

How about translating 1,2,3 into a column, which will look exactly like the example you started from, and use the same approach ?

If I understood correctly the request, this might just do the trick.
And to run it on more columns, just need to add them origin cte definition + unpivot column list.
Now, i dont know how you pass your 1 - n values for it to be dynamic, but if you tell me, i could try edit the script to be dynamic too.

Basically it is concatenation of rows from both tables based on column a. Tried inner join\cross apply but they all results in cross join kind of resultset understandably . I have workaround using another temp table(then update) but kind of feel that this can be done easily in single select . I am missing something simple here.

You need some sort of sequence number to join the tables together. You can generate one using row_number() as follows:
select a.a, a.b, d.c, d.d

on a.seqnum = d.seqnum;
Now the caution, caution, caution. The order by clause does not really specify the ordering, so the sequence numbers may not be what you expect. You should really have a column to specify the ordering.
You need to have a unique key value in each row to be able to join the tables in the way you would like. Then, an inner join will return the result set you require.
If you introduce referential integrity between the tables, then this will be enforced and return the expected results.
I am new to recursive CTEs. I am trying to develop a CTE which will return all of the employees under each manager name. So I have two tables: people_rv and staff_rv
People_rv table contains all of the people, both managers and employees. Staff_rv only contains manager information. Uniqueidentifier staff values are stored in Staff_rv. Uniqueidentifier employee values are stored in people_rv. People_rv contains varchar first and last name values for both managers and employees.
But when I run the following CTE I get an error:

So it is not iterating any more than the first level. Why not?
Melanie is the top most supervisor, but each of the persons in the leftmost column are also supervisors. So this query should also return level 2.
You may be in an infinite loop with your join. I would check how many levels you expect the table to actually go down. Generally you join a recursion on something similar to do
ID = ParentID
of something either contained in a table or in an expression. Keep in mind you can also create a CTE prior to a recursive CTE if you have to make up your relationship.
Here is an example that will self execute, it may help.

Your problem as far as I can tell is is you have no join connecting managers to their employees.
This join
INNER JOIN cteStaff r on r.StaffID = s2.staff_id
Just joins the same initial level 1 staffer back to himself.
UPDATE:
Still not quite right! You have a supervisor_id, but again you're still not actually using that to join back to the CTE.
So for each recursion of this CTE you need to (excluding the name join):
select {Level 1 Boss}, NULL (no supervisor)
union
select {new employee}, {that employee's boss}
So the join must connect the CTE's ClientID (the level 1 boss) to the second UNION query's supervisor field, which looks to be supervisor_id , not staff_id.
The JOIN to accomplish this second task is (from what I can tell of your staff_rv table schema):

Note the bottom join joins the r.ClientID (the level 1 boss) to the staffer's supervisor_id field.
(NB: I think your staff_id and supervisor_id's mimic your people_id values from the people_rv table, so this join should work fine. But if they are different (i.e. a staffer's supervisor_id isn't that supervisor's people_id) then you'll need to write the join such that the staffer's supervisor_id can be joined to their people_id you're storing as ClientID in the CTE.)
Here's a good simple Recursive CTE to review (it may not be the answer, but someone else searching on how to make a recursive CTE may need it):

Note that this probably won't solve your problem, but is a means to hopefully seeing where you're going wrong in the original query.
The default is 100 levels of recursion - you can set it to unlimited by using the MAXRECURSION query hint where you're selecting from your CTE:
...

Specifies the maximum number of recursions allowed for this query. number is a nonnegative integer between 0 and 32767. When 0 is
specified, no limit is applied. If this option is not specified, the

When the specified or default number for MAXRECURSION limit is reached during query execution, the query is ended and an error is
returned.
Because of this error, all effects of the statement are rolled back. If the statement is a SELECT statement, partial results or no
results may be returned. Any partial results returned may not include
all rows on recursion levels beyond the specified maximum recursion
level.
