Log contents of text file before deleting - batch-file

My script isn't logging the contents of run.txt to log.txt
I've tried to remove the delete command to see if it was deleting it too quickly and therefore couldn't log. But that wasn't the case.
What should I change?
#ECHO OFF &setlocal
SET File=run.txt
type %File%
for /f "tokens=*" %%A in (%File%) do (echo >> log.txt)
del "%File%" /s /f /q > nul
pause

Here is a very simple way to do the task you are requiring.
#echo off
REM Will only grab the first line of the file
set /p file=<run.txt
REM For the last line use a for loop
for /f "tokens=*" %%a in (%file%) do set last_line=%%a
(
echo %file%
)>>log.txt
del /f %file% >nul
If not %errorlevel% equ 0 (
ECHO ERROR - %errorlevel%
pause
exit /b
)
ECHO Success!
timeout /t 003
exit /b %errorlevel%
EXPLANATION
set /p is for set prompt. For more information you can use set /? in your CMD window or check out this site.
I wish I could speak more on what < does, but what it is doing here is piping the content of run.txt to our variable.
Then we echo out our variable to our log file with (ECHO This is our %file%)>>destination
>> is to append where > is to overwrite the file.
(
echo %file%
echo.
)>>%file%
Checking for an error is probably unnecessary, but I believe it is a good habit to build on which is what I am trying to do with that If not %errorlevel% statement.
No error? We Success and timeout ourselves for xxx seconds.

Try:
#ECHO OFF &setlocal
SET "File=run.txt"
type "%File%" >> "log.txt" && (del "%File%" /f > nul)
pause

Is there a way to extract a TXT file and convert it into a batch file?

I have this code:
#echo off
(for /f "tokens=* delims=:" %%L in ('findstr /b ::: "%~f0"') do echo %%L) >list.bat
:::#echo off
:::echo hello
:::pause
and it takes the simple "hello" script and turns it into a batch file called list.bat. The problem is that I need to put that code there every time. However, I want to extract a file with that code inside of it, for example, I have list.txt and I want to extract the code from it. The way I have tried is below I do not know what is going on. It says
The system cannot find the drive specified
for every line of code inside of list.txt
When I put echo before %%s it shows all lines of my code inside list.txt.
What am I missing?
#echo off
(for /f "tokens=* delims=:" %%l in ('findstr /b ::: "%~f0"') do echo %%l) >list.bat
for /f "tokens=*" %%s in (list.txt) do (
%%s
)
pause
List.txt looks like this:
:::#echo off
:::echo hello
:::pause
The file that is going to be created (list.bat) looks like this:
#echo off
echo hello
pause
Do not rely on delims to remove leading colons, because any number of them would be stripped:
#echo off
>list.bat (FOR /F delims^=^ eol^= %%L in ('""%__APPDIR__%FINDSTR.EXE" /BN ":::" "List.txt""') do (
set "line=%%L"
SETLOCAL EnableDelayedExpansion
echo(!line:*::::=!
ENDLOCAL
))
There are 4 colons ::::, because I used FINDSTR which adds a colon in front to ensure that the line is not void.
Conclusion
Don't add colons to your file.
Problem solved!
Credits go to Gerhard.
Working code is below:
#(for /f "tokens=* delims=:" %%L in ('type list.txt ^|findstr /b ":::"') do #echo %%L)>list.cmd
This code extracts every line form list.txt removes the colons and makes list.cmd Worked for me. My code below:
#echo off
if not exist Run.bat goto start
del Run.bat
goto start
:start
if exist Output.xtf del Output.xtf
if not exist Input.xtf goto makefiles
cls
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo Loading .XTF file please wait!
echo.
echo.
setLocal EnableDelayedExpansion
for /f "tokens=* delims= " %%a in (Input.xtf) do (
set /a N+=1
echo ^:::: %%a^ >>Output.xtf
)
cls
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo Done! finalizing loading
echo.
echo.
if not exist compiler.bat goto makbatchcomplier
if not exist Output.xtf goto makefiles1
call compiler.bat
exit
:makbatchcomplier
(for /f "tokens=* delims=:" %%L in ('findstr /b :::: "%~f0"') do echo %%L) >compiler.bat
:::: #(for /f "tokens=* delims=:" %%L in ('type Output.xtf ^|findstr /b "::::"') do #echo %%L)>Run.bat
:::: start Run.bat
:::: del Output.xtf
:::: del compiler.bat
:::: exit
call compiler.bat
exit
:makefiles
echo >Input.xtf
exit
:makefiles1
echo >Output.xtf
call compiler.bat
exit
As has already been mentioned in the comments, all you've effectively done is create a copy of Input.xtf named run.bat, then ran that!
Here's how I've interpreted your own provided code:
Input.xtf is an empty file or has unknown content.
Output.xtf is each non empty line of Input.xtf but prepended with ::::.
run.bat is the content of Output.xtf, but with leading :::: removed, which means it is the same as Input.xtf
compiler.bat is each line of this script, (list.cmd), which begins with ::::, it creates and runs run.bat, then deletes both Output.xtf, and itself.
Based upon that assessment your provided script could just as easily have looked like the following, (and even then, you wouldn't get to read Loading .XTF file please wait!, because the CLS command would effectively clear it before you had time to read it).
#ECHO OFF
IF NOT EXIST "Input.xtf" (
CD.> "Input.xtf" 2> NUL
EXIT /B
)
COPY /Y "Input.xtf" "Run.bat" 2> NUL || EXIT /B
CLS
ECHO=
ECHO=
ECHO=
ECHO=
ECHO Loading .XTF file please wait!
ECHO=
ECHO=
CLS
ECHO=
ECHO=
ECHO=
ECHO=
ECHO Done! finalizing loading
ECHO=
ECHO=
START "Run.bat"
EXIT /B
Additionally, as Input.xtf could contain absolutely nothing, (because you created a 0 byte file, if it didn't exist), it is possible that, CD.> "Input.xtf" followed by CD.> "Run.bat" is all you've done! I would assume that isn't what you wanted to do, so it may be better to check if Input.xtf, exists and has content instead. Removing the unnecessary ECHO lines, the finished script could look like this:
#IF NOT EXIST "Input.xtf" CD.> "Input.xtf" 2> NUL
#"%__APPDIR__%FIND.EXE" /V "" "Input.xtf" 1> NUL || EXIT /B
#COPY /Y "Input.xtf" "Run.bat" 2> NUL || EXIT /B
#"Run.bat"

Batch File looping until certain text is displayed

Currently have a batch file for replacing NTFS permissions using the takeown and icacls commands, i have added these commands to a loop and it works great.
Is there a way to exit the loop when a certain response is displayed? like "Failed processing 0 files" or something like that? the code i am using is below, hopefully this will help some other people also.
#echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
for /l %%x in (1,1,1000) do (
echo Taking ownsership of Folders & Files - loop %%x
for /f "delims=" %%i in ('takeown.exe /R /A /F "F:\Shares\NetBackup Clients" /D N ^| findstr /i /C:"Failed processing 0 files"') do (
set "error=%%i"
if "!errorlevel!"=="0" goto :end
)
echo Applying permissions to filestore - loop %%x
icacls.exe "F:\Shares\NetBackup Clients" /grant "Domain\Group":F /grant "Domain\Group":R /T /C
echo Finished applying permissions to filestore - loop %%x >> C:\Loopy.txt
)
goto :eof
:end
echo %error%
Many Thanks
I think you might have the error the wrong way around, so you would need to adjust it accordingly, but we use findstr and if we meet the requirement (errorlevel is 0) we exit the loop.
#echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
for /l %%x in (1,1,1000) do (
echo %%x
for /f "delims=" %%i in ('takeown.exe /R /A /F "\\fileserver\share\" /D N ^| findstr /i "Failed processing 0 files"') do (
set "error=%%i"
if "!errorlevel!"=="0" goto :end
)
echo Finished takeown >> C:\Loopy.txt
icacls.exe "\\fileserver\share\" /grant "Domain\Group":F /grant "Domain\Group":R /T /C
echo Finished icacls >> C:\Loopy.txt
echo Loop %%x >> C:\Loopy.txt
)
goto :eof
:end

How do I make a batch log file?

How do I make a log file from this code. This has been answered a ton, but this file is huge and I want a simple log file. As you see I also tried to add a log file names RandomNamesLog.log. See if the output goes there.
I want all the code to be outputted into the log file, with error messages and confirm messages, like removing the #ECHO OFF value.
If you need more on what I want, please tell me.

Once you are happy with it edit your opening question explaining what it is you want to have in the log file and how you need it to look.
I use this. it seems to work.
It just starts a log file and maintains logs.
You can set logpath and logname (base name) then you call this create_logfile
It creates a semi-random log file.
Now you write to the set logfile
I'm not an advanced coder. Please feel free to correct:

Exclude certain file extensions from random file selection - batch script

I'm in the process of making a script that selects 25 random tracks from a user specified folder and adds them into an .m3u playlist. The trouble I have is that my music folders include various other files as well (eg: .txt, .jpg, .png, .nfo, etc...)
So I'm looking for a way of excluding the extensions listed above, limiting the script to just work with audio files. Any help would be much appreciated!
Here is the code so far... It has been stitched together from various sources so accept my apologies if it is a little crude:
#echo off
title Multiple Choice Menu
:home
cls
echo.
echo Select a genre:
echo =============
echo.
echo 1) Jungle
echo 2) D'n'B
echo 3) Reggae
echo 4) Hip-Hop
echo 5) Exit
echo.
set /p genre=Type option:
if "%genre%"=="1" cd /D "D:\NL Safe 2.0\High Quality\Jungle"
if "%genre%"=="2" cd /D "D:\NL Safe 2.0\High Quality\DnB\Standard DnB"
if "%genre%"=="3" cd /D "D:\NL Safe 2.0\High Quality\Reggae
if "%genre%"=="4" cd /D "D:\NL Safe 2.0\High Quality\Hip-Hop"
if "%genre%"=="5" exit
:: Clear existing Playlist
#echo. > C:\Users\Brew\Desktop\random.m3u
:: Create numbered list of files in a temporary file
set "tempFile=%temp%\%~nx0_fileList_%time::=.%.txt"
dir /b /s /a-d %1 | findstr /n "^" >"%tempFile%"
:: Count the files
for /f %%N in ('type "%tempFile%" ^| find /c /v ""') do set cnt=%%N
:: Open 25 random files
for /l %%N in (1 1 25) do call :openRandomFile
:: Delete the temp file
del "%tempFile%"
:openRandomFile
set /a "randomNum=(%random% %% cnt) + 1"
for /f "tokens=1* delims=:" %%A in (
'findstr "^%randomNum%:" "%tempFile%"'
) do (
setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
set tune=%%B
#echo !tune! >> C:\Users\Brew\Desktop\random.m3u
)
Assuming your song's folder is on %1.
The dir command supports wildcards in the idea that
dir *.txt *.xml
will only list .txt and .xml files.
So you can try doing this instead:
...
:: Create numbered list of files in a temporary file
set "tempFile=%temp%\%~nx0_fileList_%time::=.%.txt"
pushd %1
dir /b /s /a-d *.mp3 *.EXT1 *.EXT2 | findstr /n "^" >"%tempFile%"
popd
...
Where EXT will be the extensions you want to match.
This will create your %tempFile% with only the files you want. Since the code that selects a file ramdomly works, as I see, over this file, it won't need to change at all.
I couldn't get dir to work with both target directory and wildcards.
Hope it helps.
This is why i used pushd and popd.
Thanks Daniel,
I had another go at it an finally got something working on my own. I used a series of If statements to put the random file through an extension validation check
This is the working script

How to do while loop in windows batch

I wrote a windows batch script to check and move files to another directory based on the list I put in a notepad file named list.txt. But I have no idea that how to set the while-loop. Only to jump out of the subroute when the condition fulfill.
In C Programming, we could write like this by setting a while-loop direcly. But seems in windows batch is quite different.
All I want is like this:
Directory A:
1. A.txt
2. B.txt
3. list.txt (By line sequential with filename want to move)
4. process.bat
Directory B:
None of files (Then move a file by order of line set in list.txt) OR
A.txt (If already existed a text file in directory, process.bat will pause before A.txt disappear)
Process.bat
