How to do a adc conversion every 1us with Nucleo-F303K8? - c

Im using the STM32 Cube IDE. What I tried now is enable MSM in TIM2 and output_compare_no_output on Channel 1 and select "Reset" as the Trigger Event. Then I went to ADC1 and enabled Regular_Conversion_Mode, set Number_Of_Conversions to 1 and the External_Trigger_Conversion_Source to Timer 2 Trigger Out event. After that I set up a DMA in circular mode that pushes half-words to a RAM buffer. For testing I've set the frequency of the timer a lot lower (10Hz) and send some ADC readings from the buffer via UART in the ConvHalfCoplt and ConvCoplt complete callbacks. But at the moment it does not work. Can you think about any mistakes in my approach ?

What I tried so far is configuring TIM2 to reset every microsecond and start a conversion in the interupt callback:
void HAL_TIM_PeriodElapsedCallback(TIM_HandleTypeDef *htim){
// Check which timer triggered this callback
if (htim == &htim2){
HAL_ADC_Start(&hadc1);
HAL_ADC_PollForConversion(&hadc1, HAL_MAX_DELAY);
adc_val = HAL_ADC_GetValue(&hadc1);
}
}
But as far as I know PollForConversion can take some time.
Is it better to create a buffer and use DMA to constantly transfer data from the ADC to the buffer and read a value from there every microsecond ?
Wouldn't I read "old" data that way ?

Running an ADC conversion every 1us is quite a challenging task, with the STM32F3 MCU core running at max. 72MHz "only". Therefore you should solve this task using hardware functionality only:
set up a timer to create a trigger output event every 1us (see description of Master mode selection in TIM control register of Reference Manual). Instead of generating an interrupt your timer can generate a trigger output on an update event:
set Master mode selection bits MSM in TIM2_CR2 to 010 (Update).
bit MSM in TIM2_SMCR should stay at 0
set up the ADC to run a conversion when triggered by the external trigger generated by the timer (see section Conversion on external trigger in ADC chapter of Reference Manual):
set EXTEN to 01 (HW trigger on rising edge) in ADC1_CFGR
set EXTSEL to 1011 (TIM2_TRGO event) in ADC1_CFGR
set up the ADC to generate a DMA request after each conversion (see section Managing conversions using the DMA in ADC chapter of Reference Manual)
set up DMA to store data read from ADC into a RAM buffer (see chapter on DMA controller in Reference Manual). I recommend running the DMA channel in circular mode on a large RAM buffer. This avoids any necessity to reconfigure the DMA during runtime.
With this setup, you can use all MCU clock cycles on processing the large amount of data generated by the ADC in this setup (1 MByte / s). You can either poll the DMA controller to check for new data or use the DMA flags Half Transfer Complete and Transfer Complete to be notified by IRQ each time half of the buffer is filled with new data.
You will have to study the documentation of ADC, Timer and DMA quite a lot to get this setup running - but it is worth the effort since it will solve your task neatly!

i am using the Nucleo64 STM32F446 board and i am trying to read out 3 temperature sensors with the polling method and via DMA but with both methods i can get only 1 correct value. The voltage at every ADC Input is the same. I cannot find the mistake.
Here i drop the polling method: (I just followed this Youtube Tut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5l-b6lsubBE )

i used PA7 and PA4 instead of PA2 & PA3 for the ADC conversion and it's working. It seems that on this Nucleo Board PA2 & PA3 is not suitable for this task.

How to set up circular DMA for continuous mode ADC on STM32F411?

I'm using CubeIDE for development. I'd like to sample an analog pin with a consistent sampling rate and I'd like that sampling rate to be as high possible. Hence I configured PCLK2 to run at 72 MHz, allowing me to reach the maximum allowed sampling rate of 36 MHz in the ADC. With the ADC configured to 6-bit accuracy, I'm expecting each measurement to take 18 CPU cycles.
Because I'd also like to perform FFT on the samples, I figured I need to delegate the storage of samples to DMA. To reduce the overhead in the main loop, I figured I should set the ADC to run in continuous mode, and the DMA to run in circular mode. My understanding is that this way the measurements would be automatically transferred to memory, and I'd only have to worry about handling the data whenever I'd get an interrupt from the DMA, which would happen once when the buffer is half-full, and once when it is full.
I'd appreciate a step by step guide on exactly how to set the device up for my use case using HAL, in case I missed any steps or misunderstood the purpose of any settings. When I tried to get circular DMA to work, the firs half of the buffer contained valid values, while the second one contained some that seemed corrupted (outside of the range of a 6-bit unsigned integer). I realized that I maybe need to avoid reading the same part of the memory that the DMA is trying to access, so I wrote some simple code that switched between reading the two halves, but that didn't seem to work either.
In an attempt to clean the code up and have another shot at debugging the issue, I changed the DMA mode to Normal and disabled DMA Continuous Requests, but kept Continuous Conversion Mode enabled, and tried to register a HAL_DMA_XFER_HALFCPLT_CB_ID callback, instead of modifying the interrupt handler. I also tried to register HAL_DMA_XFER_CPLT_CB_ID, but neither seem to be called. I verified that the interrupt handler is getting called.
Here is my main.c source file. Other than the code I wrote here, I've only made modifications in the Device Configuration Tool.

The LED never lights up and I'm not receiving anything over UART. Can you help me identify the issue, and/or give me any other useful tips?

STM32 Having problems to get DMA + ADC to run. (NUCLEO-G431KB)

I made a new C project:
Made an ADC_1 channel_1
Enabled Continous Conversion Mode
Enabled DMA Continoise Requests
Made a DMA channel
Created code added a buffer, started the DMA and added a Delay to the while loop.
When I now let it run on my NUCLEO-G431KB. And set a breakpoint at the delay. And take a look at my buffer, it's filled with zeros.
Therefore I guess DMA is not working correctly since I get a different reading when I use the ADC without DMA and just poll the values. (I connected a voltage source of 0.61V to this pin)
Additionally, both ADC callbacks are never called.
void HAL_ADC_ConvHalfCpltCallback(ADC_HandleTypeDef* hadc) {
HAL_GPIO_WritePin(LD2_GPIO_Port, LD2_Pin, GPIO_PIN_SET);
}
// Called when buffer is completely filled
void HAL_ADC_ConvCpltCallback(ADC_HandleTypeDef* hadc) {
HAL_GPIO_WritePin(LD2_GPIO_Port, LD2_Pin, GPIO_PIN_RESET);
}
I checked their source and they seem to not be enabled and count as legacy code.

I had a similar issue on STM32H7. For m,e swapping the call order of the initialization calls fixed the problem.
The function MX_DMA_Init(); should be called prior to MX_ADC1_Init();.
This can be set in STM32QubeMX under Project Manager > Advanced settings > Generated Function Calls.
Your code seems to be missing two things:
ADC clocking - no call to the macro
__HAL_RCC_ADC12_CLK_ENABLE()
ADC input pin configuration. PB8 (led?) is configured, but where is PA0?
When something just doesn't work - the first thing to check is clocks.

DMA misbehavior on NUCLEO-F303K8 using HAL

At the moment I am trying to operate a WS2811 LED strip. The way I see it is to transmit Pulse values through DMA using STM32 MC (rn I have nucleo-f303k8), so timer creates continuous PWM signal on STM pin, WS2811 gets the gata and lights up correct LED with correct color.
However, right now I have a big problem with DMA: using CubeMX and Keil Uvision, I configure DMA on timer on CubeMX's defaults (only configuring prescaler, counter and pulse). Using hal_tim_pwm_start_dma function doesn't give me the result I need: whatever value I type into variable I use in the function, it gives me 3.3V signal for 100% of the cycle. Googling had me find 0 of the same problems.
Here is code from main.c. Everything in other files is unchanged.

So the problem was with the timer. I was trying to get my program going, using TIM2, and output didn't look like anything I wanted to get. Then I decided to switch to TIM1 and for some magical reason everything started working!
That said, if you encounter same problem, try switching between timers of your STM32.

stm32 HardFault_Handler after reset

I am currently developing a stm32f103C8 based pcb. The current project state can be viewed in this GitHub Project.
The problem that I am facing, is that I can not run the code without debugging the device.
My Question is: what can I do to make the code run without the debugger?
Setup
PCB
I use the following Schematic. Currently the battery managment and the external clock is not populated. So I use the interal oscillator. I power the device through 5V source which is regulated by the voltage regulator.
Programming
I use a st-link v2 with SWD. Only swclk, swdio and gnd are connected.
For developing the application code I use cubemx (ide and code generator).

What I have tested
when diconnecting Boot0 and Boot1 from GND I can run the code with the debugger normally
when connecting Boot0 and Boot1 to GND the debugger directly jumps to the HardFault_Handler
the code never runs when connected to Boot0 and Boot1 without debugger.
Voltage level is stable
There is no difference in the behavior when resetting the MCU with power cycling and NRST.
It is enough boot0 toi be connected to GND. Boot1 means something only if the boot0 is high.
Instant hard fault after the reset usually indicates that the initial stack address is invalid (offset 0 in the Vector Table)
Check the linker script if you have the correct one.
If you use atollic studio or STM32CUBE IDE you can use hard fault plugin - which makes all the hard job for you (taking stuff from the stack and reading the appropriate system registers)
