Giving my ContextMenu style treatment not working - wpf

I have a WPF App and I have a context menu showing up when I right click on any row in my datagrid. It works 100% but I want to mess with the style and give a nice dark theme to this context menu. This was my first ever attempt at making a context menu in dark theme.
<DataGrid>
<DataGrid.Resources>
...
</DataGrid.Resources>
<DataGrid.ContextMenu>
<ContextMenu BorderBrush="Transparent" BorderThickness="0" Background="#FF484848" Foreground="White">
<MenuItem Header="Item 1" BorderBrush="Transparent" BorderThickness="0" Background="#FF484848">
<MenuItem.Icon>
<Image Source="/Foo.Bar.MyAwesomeApp;component/Resources/icon-1.png"/>
</MenuItem.Icon>
</MenuItem>
<MenuItem Header="Item 2" BorderBrush="Transparent" BorderThickness="0" Background="#FF484848">
<MenuItem.Icon>
<Image Source="/Foo.Bar.MyAwesomeApp;component/Resources/icon-2.png"/>
</MenuItem.Icon>
</MenuItem>
<Separator Background="#FF131313" Height="2" />
<MenuItem Header="Item 3" BorderBrush="Transparent" BorderThickness="0" Background="#FF484848">
<MenuItem.Icon>
<Image Source="/Foo.Bar.MyAwesomeApp;component/Resources/icon-3.png"/>
</MenuItem.Icon>
</MenuItem>
</ContextMenu>
</DataGrid.ContextMenu>
<DataGrid.Columns>
...
</DataGrid.Columns>
</DataGrid>
All this is getting me is a context menu with the desired background color but the icon area has a light gray background taking over the icon space and when I hover over each menu item I still get the old light gray colors. In addition there's a vertical light gray bay between the icon space and the header text space and I have no idea how to change the style for that.
Has anyone been able to solve this issue? Many thanks in advance.

You need to write your own MenuItem.Template, you can copy default WPF template and change it.
Default template is
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Menu.Static.Foreground" Color="#FF212121"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Menu.Disabled.Foreground" Color="#FF707070"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="MenuItem.Selected.Background" Color="#3D26A0DA"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="MenuItem.Selected.Border" Color="#FF26A0DA"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="MenuItem.Highlight.Background" Color="#3D26A0DA"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="MenuItem.Highlight.Border" Color="#FF26A0DA"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="MenuItem.Highlight.Disabled.Background" Color="#0A000000"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="MenuItem.Highlight.Disabled.Border" Color="#21000000"/>
<Geometry x:Key="Checkmark">F1 M 10.0,1.2 L 4.7,9.1 L 4.5,9.1 L 0,5.2 L 1.3,3.5 L 4.3,6.1L 8.3,0 L 10.0,1.2 Z</Geometry>
<ControlTemplate x:Key="MenuItemTemplate1" TargetType="{x:Type MenuItem}">

You can get it if you click on menuitem element in xaml designer, and select Edit Template as a Copy

WPF- Can I Change Background Color of MenuItem and SubMenuItem When IsMouseOver Triggered Without Using Template?

I want to change the background color of MenuItem when IsMouseOver is triggered but without using a Template.
Could it happen?
Or should I use a Template to change background color of MenuItem when IsMouseOver is triggered?
Edit:
I try to add ControlTemplate using dhilmathy's advice, now I can change the background of the header when IsMouseOver is triggered, but how can I change the background of MenuItem? MenuItems now disappeared.
XAML below as:

You need to modify the default ControlTemplate of MenuItem to achieve this. You can create a copy of the existing Template from Visual Studio,
Default template:
<ControlTemplate x:Key="MenuItemControlTemplate1" TargetType="{x:Type MenuItem}">
<Border x:Name="templateRoot" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" SnapsToDevicePixels="True">
<Grid Margin="-1">
<Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<ColumnDefinition MinWidth="22" SharedSizeGroup="MenuItemIconColumnGroup" Width="Auto"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="13"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="*"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="30"/>
<ColumnDefinition SharedSizeGroup="MenuItemIGTColumnGroup" Width="Auto"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="20"/>
</Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<ContentPresenter x:Name="Icon" Content="{TemplateBinding Icon}" ContentSource="Icon" HorizontalAlignment="Center" Height="16" Margin="3" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="16"/>
<Border x:Name="GlyphPanel" BorderBrush="#FF26A0DA" BorderThickness="1" Background="#3D26A0DA" ClipToBounds="False" HorizontalAlignment="Center" Height="22" Margin="-1,0,0,0" Visibility="Hidden" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="22">
<Path x:Name="Glyph" Data="F1M10,1.2L4.7,9.1 4.5,9.1 0,5.2 1.3,3.5 4.3,6.1 8.3,0 10,1.2z" Fill="#FF212121" FlowDirection="LeftToRight" Height="11" Width="10"/>
</Border>
<ContentPresenter x:Name="menuHeaderContainer" ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding HeaderTemplate}" Content="{TemplateBinding Header}" Grid.Column="2" ContentStringFormat="{TemplateBinding HeaderStringFormat}" ContentSource="Header" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="{TemplateBinding Padding}" RecognizesAccessKey="True" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}" VerticalAlignment="Center"/>
<TextBlock x:Name="menuGestureText" Grid.Column="4" Margin="{TemplateBinding Padding}" Opacity="0.7" Text="{TemplateBinding InputGestureText}" VerticalAlignment="Center"/>
</Grid>
</Border>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="Icon" Value="{x:Null}">
<Setter Property="Visibility" TargetName="Icon" Value="Collapsed"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsChecked" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Visibility" TargetName="GlyphPanel" Value="Visible"/>
<Setter Property="Visibility" TargetName="Icon" Value="Collapsed"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsHighlighted" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="templateRoot" Value="#3D26A0DA"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" TargetName="templateRoot" Value="#FF26A0DA"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="False">
<Setter Property="TextElement.Foreground" TargetName="templateRoot" Value="#FF707070"/>
<Setter Property="Fill" TargetName="Glyph" Value="#FF707070"/>
</Trigger>
<MultiTrigger>
<MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Condition Property="IsHighlighted" Value="True"/>
<Condition Property="IsEnabled" Value="False"/>
</MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="templateRoot" Value="#0A000000"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" TargetName="templateRoot" Value="#21000000"/>
</MultiTrigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
You need to edit IsHighlighted Trigger to match your requirements.
I have already solved my question.
In order to change MenuItem's background, it must use Template.
Here is MenuItem style:
<Style x:Key="TopLevelHeaderStyle" TargetType="{x:Type MenuItem}">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="#000d18"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="#d8d8d8"/>
<Setter Property="Width" Value="72"/>
<Setter Property="Height" Value="42"/>
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="16"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type MenuItem}">
<Border x:Name="MenuItemBorder" Width="72" Height="42" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}">
<Grid VerticalAlignment="Center">
<Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/>
</Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<ContentPresenter Content="{TemplateBinding Header}" ContentSource="Header" Margin="{TemplateBinding Padding}" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}"/>
<Popup AllowsTransparency="True" IsOpen="{Binding IsSubmenuOpen, RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}}" Placement="Bottom" PlacementTarget="{Binding ElementName=MenuItemBorder}"
HorizontalOffset="1" VerticalOffset="-1">
<Border BorderBrush="#414141" Background="#414141">
<ScrollViewer Style="{DynamicResource {ComponentResourceKey ResourceId=MenuScrollViewer, TypeInTargetAssembly={x:Type FrameworkElement}}}">
<ItemsPresenter SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}"/>
</ScrollViewer>
</Border>
</Popup>
</Grid>
</Border>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsHighlighted" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="#1271C8"/>
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
Set Template to revise original template, and use ContentPresenter to show content and Popup to show SubMenuItem whose ItemsPresenter can show subMenuItem content. Adjust Popup's style can meet expectaion.
Besides, Trigger IsHighlighted can change MenuItem's background until clicking other position.
SubMenuItem's style can use another customized style to change.
New Style:

How to use a MenuItem with child MenuItems when it has a custom ControlTemplate and is defined in a separate XAML file?

I have a MenuItem inside a Menu that should show a time span in its right side sometimes (a time span that decreases second by second). To make this change I created a new MenuItem subclass XAML file. In it I set the Template property of the MenuItem to the template that is created automatically by the Visual Studio when I click Edit Template > Edit a Copy... in the context menu of the menu item in the designer. When this template is set, the subitems, set directly in the MenuItem.Items property inside the new XAML file, do not show up, just like there has not been any child menu item added to it. I wish to use a template defined in XAML and also have child items at the same time.
I tried to not put the child menu items in the new XAML file, but directly in the MainWindow.xaml, but I have reached this limitation.
I also googled "wpf menuitem template with subitems" but with no success.
In MainWindow.xaml:
<MenuItem Header="_Window">
<local:KeepOnTopMenuItem Header="_Keep on Top..." x:Name="MiKeepOnTop">
</local:KeepOnTopMenuItem>
</MenuItem>
and all the markup in KeepOnTopMenuItem.xaml:

x:Name="MiKeepOnTopFor1Hour"/>
</MenuItem.Items>
<MenuItem.Icon>
<Image Source="/Resources/Oxygen-Icons.org-Oxygen-Actions-go-top.ico"/>
</MenuItem.Icon>
</MenuItem>
The expected result is that the submenu items are shown and the actual result is that the KeepOnTopMenuItem shows up as without child items.
I am not sure what to do next. What can I do to use custom MenuItem template together with child items?
Edit Template->Edit a Copy doesn't give you the right template.
If you use a decompiler such as dotPeek and open C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\WPF\PresentationFramework.Aero2.dll, you'll find the default templates in themes/aero2.normalcolor.baml.
If you look at the MenuItem template, you'll se that it applies a different ControlTemplate based on the value of the Role property:
<Style.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="MenuItem.Role" Value="TopLevelHeader">
<Setter Property="Control.Template"
Value="{DynamicResource {ComponentResourceKey TypeInTargetAssembly={x:Type MenuItem}, ResourceId=TopLevelHeaderTemplateKey}}"/>
<Setter Property="Control.Padding" Value="6,0"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="MenuItem.Role" Value="TopLevelItem">
<Setter Property="Control.Template"
Value="{DynamicResource {ComponentResourceKey TypeInTargetAssembly={x:Type MenuItem}, ResourceId=TopLevelItemTemplateKey}}"/>
<Setter Property="Control.Padding" Value="6,0"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="MenuItem.Role" Value="SubmenuHeader">
<Setter Property="Control.Template"
Value="{DynamicResource {ComponentResourceKey TypeInTargetAssembly={x:Type MenuItem}, ResourceId=SubmenuHeaderTemplateKey}}"/>
</Trigger>
</Style.Triggers>
It's one of these templates that you should customize in order not to break the default behaviour.

How does Visual Studio Achieve This Kind of MenuItem Drawing?

I'm in the process of creating a dark ui for my application, and came across something interesting while using Visual Studio as a point of reference. I noticed they render their MenuItems almost as if they're Tabs in a Tabcontrol. Here's a picture:
And here's what mine looks like:
I know it's probably hard to see because everything is sort of the same color, so I went ahead and made another modified image to better highlight the area.
As you can hopefully see, Visual studio draws a border around the MenuItem, and then doesnt draw a border directly below it, for the drop down children. How does Visual Studio do it, though? How could I achieve it? Here's my template:

In order to figure out what's going on inside Visual Studio, I started two instances of Visual Studio 2017 and attached one to the other's process which allowed me to use the Live Visual Tree tool to inspect the controls (presumably you could use Snoop for this as well).
It turns out that the menu popup in Visual Studio appears to be offset so that it overlays the menu bar and a small box of some sort is drawn to achieve the continuous tab look. This is especially noticeable if you use the Properties window to tweak the VerticalOffset property of the popup so that it is separated from the main menu.
Finding the Popup in the Visual Tree:
Changing the VerticalOffset from its original -2 to a positive number:
And the resulting popup:
If you look at the top left of the now separated menu popup you should be able to see a small extension of the popup that, when the VerticalOffset was -2 originally, overlapped the parent MenuItem border creating the illusion of a single tab-like control.
Knowing this, creating a rudimentary version of Visual Studio's solution is fairly straightforward:

This is basically the same style and templates that you gave above with the addition of a Rectangle within the MenuItemControlTemplate1 ControlTemplate and a Grid so that both it and the existing Border can be contained within the popup. The SubtractingConverter is just a simple IValueConverter that subtracts the ConverterParameter from the Value... nothing fancy. I've also gone ahead and thrown it in a window for testing. When I run this test program I now get this:
Since I don't have all of your styles obviously not all of the colors are going to be correct, but you'll notice that the menu you were concerned about now appears to be one continuous tab like in Visual Studio.
Now this is not a full solution. There are obvious minor details such as a missing border around the parent "Tools" and "Whatever" menus, but more critically you still need to account for the Popup changing its position due to overlap with the monitor edges when placing the Rectangle.
If you move the application window to the bottom of the screen, the Popup class will open the menu instance above the "Tools" menu rather than below, which will obviously result in the Rectangle being misplaced. Similarly, opening the menu when the window is again the right edge of the screen will once again cause the Rectangle to be misplaced due to the change in popup position. Even Visual Studio 2017 doesn't properly account for this case as you can see below:
Now, maybe handling the basic use case is enough for you in which case, great! If you want to go further and handle repositioning, resizing, and/or hiding/showing the rectangle so that it looks perfect no matter what weird position the user opens a menu in, then I really see no way to do this cleanly without some actual C# code. I suspect this is at least one of the things that the VSMenuItem class in the Live Visual Tree of Visual Studio shown previously does over and above the bog standard MenuItem class. Implementing that functionality is really outside the scope of the original question, but hopefully this at least made clear how they pulled it off.
Set the background colour of that menu item to the colour that you want, and the foreground colour to white.

WPF MenuItem template makes subitem background transparent

I want to modify the TopLevelHeader to not display any borders and hover effects. To do so I've overwritten the default MenuItem style using the following MSDN example:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms747082(v=vs.90).aspx
My problem is that with this style the subItems are displayed with a transparent background. I've also tried to use the style form aero.normalcolor.xaml but the problem remains, the subItems have a transparent background.
The relevant part:
<Style x:Key="SimpleMenuItemBasic" TargetType="{x:Type MenuItem}">
<Style.Triggers>

BorderThickness="1">

</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
<Setter Property="Grid.IsSharedSizeScope" Value="true"/>
</Trigger>
</Style.Triggers>
</Style>
And the usage example:
<Menu>
<MenuItem Header="menuItem1" Style="{StaticResource SimpleMenuItemBasic}">
<MenuItem Header="subitem1" />
<MenuItem Header="subitem2" />
</MenuItem>
</Menu>
Step 1 - Open Blend for Visual Studio (Previously Expression Blend)
Blend for Visual Studio is the tool for styling. It is awesome and everyone who is styling should use it more often.
With Visual Studio 2012 and 2013, you should get Blend with your MSDN Subscription.
Step 2 - Open your solution in Blend.
Step 3 - Right-click on your MenuItem and choose Edit Template | Edit a copy.
This creates a copy of the default style that is used. It creates a copy of the entire style. This will be a lot of Xaml. I usually create this in a separate ResourceDictionary file but for this example, I will put it right in the MainWindow Resources.
Step 4 - Comment out the highlight stuff in the default style that affects the Top MenuItem.
Step 5 - Only keep what you changed.
We only needed to comment out a single trigger in one control template. So lets remove all the extra except for that ControlTemplate.
Note: I left what I commented out so you can see it.
Now when you highlight the top MenuItems, nothing happens. But when you right-click and the submenu pops up, everything is the same as normal.
Here is the resulting Xaml. Hope this helps you.

WPF - How to style the menu control to remove the left margin?

I have added a default menu control to my user control. I need to style the menu to remove the left margin containing the space for the icon or checkbox. How can I do this?
XAML:
<Menu>
<MenuItem Header="MyMenu" FontSize="10">
<MenuItem Header="Options..." />
<MenuItem Header="About" />
</MenuItem>
</Menu>
It currently renders like any other Menu control out of the box:
I don't want the margin or column to the left of the menu items. This is typically used for icons etc.
I think this is what you're after (again, got around to it using Expression Blend, but its the most minimalist I could get in terms of what it displays...and it took a lot of playing around with)...you can just drop the following in a blank WPF application as an example:

Simpal and Sort way is below:
Create an ItemsPanelTemplate resource
<ItemsPanelTemplate x:Key="MenuItemPanelTemplate">
<StackPanel Background="White"/>
</ItemsPanelTemplate>
Add below MenuItem style to resources and you are done.
<Style TargetType="{x:Type MenuItem}">
<Setter Property="ItemsPanel" Value="{StaticResource MenuItemPanelTemplate}"/>
</Style>
To apply same Style to a ContextMenu, you need to create one more Style as following-
<Style TargetType="{x:Type ContextMenu}">
<Setter Property="ItemsPanel" Value="{StaticResource MenuItemPanelTemplate}"/>
</Style>
also above of that for context menu you have to add
<ContextMenu ItemsSource="{Binding MyItems}" >
<ContextMenu.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<TextBlock Margin="-20,0,-40,0" Text="{Binding Name}"/>
</DataTemplate>
</ContextMenu.ItemTemplate>
</ContextMenu>
so it will override icon space and show case textblock.It is the simple and most easy solution.
It's not very straight forward, but you need to create a MenuItemStyle, easiest through Expression Blend:
<Menu>
<MenuItem Header="MyMenu" Style="{DynamicResource MenuItemStyle1}">
<MenuItem Header="Options..." />
<MenuItem Header="About" />
</MenuItem>
</Menu>
It creates an extremely verbose set of templates and styles, and you need to edit the menu item to remove the fixed width first column of the grid, then in the SubMenuBorder ContentControl template, remove the rectangles which form the background shading. I've attached a sample project with margins removed.
Download sample project here.
Two options here:
Short, simple and straight forward. Set ItemsPanelTemplate for MenuItem or ContextMenu, depending what kind of menu you are using (see details).
Radical. Rewrite Menu style from scratch. There are two ready to use styles:
XAML-style of Menu from MahApps.Metro (ordinary Menu and ContextMenu)
Jeff Wilcox's style which inspired the previous one from MahApps (link)
My simple way is to use a negative margin for the Grid in the ItemTemplate
<ContextMenu.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<Grid Margin="-20,0,-40,0"><!--this part is important-->
<Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<ColumnDefinition Width="20"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="1*"/>
</Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<TextBlock Grid.Column="0" Text="{Binding Ident}"/>
<TextBlock Grid.Column="1" Text="{Binding Description}"/>
</Grid>
</DataTemplate>
</ContextMenu.ItemTemplate>
see full answer here
I was working with WPF Notifyicon (hardcodet) and removed the icon section of the menu with this code:
<Window ...>
<Window.Resources>
<ItemsPanelTemplate x:Key="MenuTPL">
<StackPanel Margin="-30,0,0,0" Background="White"/>
</ItemsPanelTemplate>
</Window.Resources>
<Grid>
...
<ContextMenu>
<ContextMenu.Style>
<Style TargetType="{x:Type ContextMenu}">
<Setter Property="ItemsPanel" Value="{StaticResource MenuTPL}"/>
</Style>
</ContextMenu.Style>
<MenuItem Header="Exit" Click="Exit_MenuItemClick"/>
</ContextMenu>
...
</Grid>
</Window>
To remove the space and never use icons you have to change the template of MenuItem.SubmenuItemTemplateKey or the template of MenuItem.
If you just need to get read of the vertical line and keep using the icons space folow this answare.
Windows with grid has my CustomContextMenu.xaml as grid resource:
<Window ...>
<Grid>
<Grid.Resources>
<ResourceDictionary Source="CustomContextMenu.xaml"/>
</Grid.Resources>
<Grid.ContextMenu>
<ContextMenu>
<MenuItem Header="Menu item 1" >
<MenuItem Header="Menu item 2" >
<MenuItem.Icon>
<Image Source="icon.jpg"/>
</MenuItem.Icon>
</MenuItem>
</MenuItem>
<Separator Style="{StaticResource MySeparatorStyle}" />
<MenuItem IsEnabled="False" Header="Menu item 3" />
</ContextMenu>
</Grid.ContextMenu>
<TextBlock>test</TextBlock>
</Grid>
</Window>
Here is my CustomContextMenu.xaml that has a CustomSeparatorStyle template to extend the separation line to the left margin of the context menu. And a ContextMenu template to hide the vertical line.
<ResourceDictionary xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml">
<!-- Outer menu -->
<Style TargetType="{x:Type ContextMenu}">
<Setter Property="OverridesDefaultStyle" Value="True" />
<Setter Property="MaxWidth" Value="295" />
<Setter Property="SnapsToDevicePixels" Value="True" />
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ContextMenu}">
<!-- Here is where you change the border thickness to zero on the menu -->
<Border
x:Name="Border"
Background="#CCCCC7"
BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}"
BorderThickness="1"
CornerRadius="0">
<Border.Effect>
<DropShadowEffect
Direction="135"
Opacity=".8"
ShadowDepth="2"
Color="Black" />
</Border.Effect>
<StackPanel
ClipToBounds="True"
IsItemsHost="True"
Orientation="Vertical" />
</Border>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="true">
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background" Value="#F7F7F4" />
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
<!-- Separator -->
<Style x:Key="CustomSeparatorStyle" TargetType="{x:Type Separator}">
<Setter Property="Height" Value="1" />
<Setter Property="Margin" Value="-30,5,0,5" />
<Setter Property="Background" Value="#F7F7F4" />
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type Separator}">
<Border BorderBrush="#DADAD6" BorderThickness="1" />
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
</ResourceDictionary>
The right side menu is created with the code above. You can notice the difference in size and shadow. In order to keep the shadow of the original menu you have to exclude the Border.Effect
Use a RadMenuGroupItem.
RadMenuGroupItem inherits from RadMenuItem class and it is used as container of a RadMenuItem dropdown. In other words any UI element can be placed inside of RadMenuGroupItem. By default the background color of RadMenuGroupItem is White and there is no Icon area with different color unlike RadMenuItem, so you can easily use different sized Icons in the dropdown. In addition to this RadMenuGroupItem also has a Header property which is displayed on the top of all the group items.
<telerik:RadMenu VerticalAlignment="Top">
<telerik:RadMenuItem Header="Shapes" />
<telerik:RadMenuItem Header="Sizes">
<telerik:RadMenuGroupItem Header="Header">
<telerik:RadMenuItem Header="Small" IconTemplate="{StaticResource IconTemplate}" IconColumnWidth="35" Height="35" />
<telerik:RadMenuItem Header="Medium" IconTemplate="{StaticResource IconTemplate}" IconColumnWidth="45" Height="45" />
<telerik:RadMenuItem Header="Large" IconTemplate="{StaticResource IconTemplate}" IconColumnWidth="55" Height="55" />
</telerik:RadMenuGroupItem>
</telerik:RadMenuItem>
And this is the result:
Thanks for succesfull idea. For .net Framework 4.5 and VS 2012 I wrote for ContextMenu and MenuItem accordingly:
private const double ICON_SIZE = 32;
void ContextMenu_Loaded(object sender, System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs e)
{
if (_pointerControl.ContextMenu.Template != null)
{
System.Windows.Shapes.Rectangle r1 = _pointerControl.ContextMenu.Template.FindName("3_T", _pointerControl.ContextMenu) as System.Windows.Shapes.Rectangle;
System.Windows.Shapes.Rectangle r2 = _pointerControl.ContextMenu.Template.FindName("4_T", _pointerControl.ContextMenu) as System.Windows.Shapes.Rectangle;
System.Windows.Shapes.Rectangle r3 = _pointerControl.ContextMenu.Template.FindName("5_T", _pointerControl.ContextMenu) as System.Windows.Shapes.Rectangle;
double width = Math.Max(28, ICON_SIZE+14);
r1.Width = width;
r2.Margin = new System.Windows.Thickness(width + 1, 2, 0, 2);
r3.Margin = new System.Windows.Thickness(width + 2, 2, 0, 2);
}
}
void mi_Loaded(object sender, System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs e)
{
System.Windows.Controls.MenuItem mi = sender as System.Windows.Controls.MenuItem;
if (mi != null && mi.Template != null)
{
System.Windows.Controls.ContentPresenter cp = mi.Template.FindName("Icon", mi) as System.Windows.Controls.ContentPresenter;
cp.Height = ICON_SIZE + 6;
cp.Width = ICON_SIZE + 6;
}
}
