React Initializing and synchronizing state with backend - reactjs

I wonder what is the best way/pattern to initialize state and keep it synced with the server. I've read and tried a lot for the last couple of days but haven't found anything that solves my question.
The example is really simple. There is a state - it's a number in the example for the sake of simplicity, although in real life it would be an object - that I need to retrieve from the server. Once retrieved, I want it to be synchronized with the server. The getValueFromServer is a mock that returns a random value after waiting a random amount of time in a setTimeout.
So, to initialize my state I use a useEffect on an empty array as a dependency, and to keep it synched I use a useEffect with the state as a dependency.
The problem is that it is trying to save an undefined value. The log is as follows.
1 -> Initializing for first time
2 -> API call to save in server value: undefined
3 -> API call to save in server value: 6.026930847574949
What I get:
1: Runs on mounting as expected.
2: This one I didn't expect. I guess it is triggered because of the "useState".
3: Runs once we get the response from the server. Kind of obvious but a pain in the ass, because why on earth would I want to save this.
What would the best approach be here? Using something like a "isInitialized" flag in the useEffect with dependency feels kind of hacked and not professional.

your app does other stuff while it's busy awaiting something to happen in your first useEffect hook function. "other stuff" in this case is "executing your second useEffect hook function". serverValue, and therefore value, is not defined at this point, so your console.log prints undefined. once your await promise resolves to a value and setValue gets called, your second useEffect hook function's dependencies change causing your function to be run a second time (and printing out the value you expect).
if you have to have two useEffect hooks, then just bail out of the second one when value is undefined:

React useState is not updating when set method is called in an interval

I have a websocket server that sends an object containing some hashes every 15 seconds. When the client receives a hash, I want to check with my current hash. If they differ, I want to make a call to an API to fetch new data.
The socket is working and sending the hash correctly. If the data updates on the server I get a different hash. My problem is that the hash variable I use to store the current hash is not updated correctly.
I have disabled the socket listening in my component, just to make sure that that is not the problem. Instead I have added a setInterval to mimik the socket update.

After the initial render, and waiting two interval cycles, this is what I see in the console:

You can see that stored is empty. That leads me to believe that setHash(updatedHash); never runs for some reason. Why is that?

This seems to me to be a closure issue as opposed to a React issue. If you have a look in the dev tools, you'll see the state of the component is doing what you're expecting it to. The issue is that the console log is not.
useEffect is only ever going to use an old version of update, so the console won't log what you're expecting. If you add update to the dependency array (and add a clean up so we don't end up with tonnes of intervals) you'll get what you're looking for. Can be seen in the linked codepen.
I think the issue in on this line :

Include setHash in your dependency list et voilà
EDIT: Or well, you should include these dependencies in all your useCallback/useEffect hooks since the reference will be lost whenever the component updates. You always have to include all dependencies in the dependency list not to get unpredictable behavior.
use setState(prevValue => {}) to get the the preferred effect. Also, if you running in a Strict mode this will fire the setState twice.

In both cases (socket & interval) the issue is that you need to re-define the callback functions with the new context of the variables in the scope, whenever something changes. In this case you will probably need to put "update" (and whatever other variable you need to "watch") inside the dependancy array of the useEffect.
Ive had a similar issues. Here is how I ended up defining socket callback that updates correctly. Notice that I added the save function (just a function that saves the state into the useState). Also, you need to return a clean up function to turn the socket callback off when the component unmounts. This way every time anything changes in the dependancy array, the hook re-runs and recreates that callback with the new information.

What is the good practice way to prevent a useEffect from triggering on initial render? [duplicate]

According to the docs:
componentDidUpdate() is invoked immediately after updating occurs. This method is not called for the initial render.
We can use the new useEffect() hook to simulate componentDidUpdate(), but it seems like useEffect() is being ran after every render, even the first time. How do I get it to not run on initial render?
As you can see in the example below, componentDidUpdateFunction is printed during the initial render but componentDidUpdateClass was not printed during the initial render.

We can use the useRef hook to store any mutable value we like, so we could use that to keep track of if it's the first time the useEffect function is being run.
If we want the effect to run in the same phase that componentDidUpdate does, we can use useLayoutEffect instead.

While this also works, it involves updating state which will cause your component to re-render. If all your component's useEffect calls (and also all of its children's) have a dependency array, this doesn't matter. But keep in mind that any useEffect without a dependency array (useEffect(() => {...}) will be run again.
Using and updating useRef will not cause any re-renders.

We need to return what comes back from effect(), because it might be a cleanup function. But we don't need to determine if it is or not. Just pass it on and let useEffect figure it out.
In an earlier version of this post I said resetting the ref (isMounted.current = false) wasn't necessary. But in React 18 it is, because components can remount with their previous state (thanks #Whatabrain).
I thought creating a custom hook would be overkill and I didn't want to muddle my component's readability by using the useLayoutEffect hook for something unrelated to layouts, so, in my case, I simply checked to see if the value of my stateful variable selectedItem that triggers the useEffect callback is its original value in order to determine if it's the initial render:

If you want to skip the first render, you can create a state "firstRenderDone" and set it to true in the useEffect with empty dependecy list (that works like a didMount). Then, in your other useEffect, you can check if the first render was already done before doing something.

All previous are good, but this can be achieved in a simplier way considering that the action in useEffect can be "skipped" placing an if condition(or any other ) that is basically not run first time, and still with the dependency.
For example I had the case of :
Load data from an API but my title has to be "Loading" till the date were not there, so I have an array, tours that is empty at beginning and show the text "Showing"
Have a component rendered with different information from those API.
The user can delete one by one those info, even all making the tour array empty again as the beginning but this time the API fetch is been already done
Once the tour list is empty by deleting then show another title.
so my "solution" was to create another useState to create a boolean value that change only after the data fetch making another condition in useEffect true in order to run another function that also depend on the tour length.

As mentioned in the comments and link supplied, useState is asynchronous so setting a value and immediately reading it in the following line will not yield consistent result:

It is important to also understand that whenever you update state using useState, the component will render again. If you have a method call in the body of the app it will be run everytime you update state. So what you have is a scenario where you are making a call to update state, but the method is being executed and ends up overwriting your changes.

If you only need the value at initial render, then call the method from useEffect and set the dependency chain to [] so it only runs once at first render, and not every time state is updated.

Since setState is async you will need to observe when it finishes, this can be easily done using useEffect and adding caritems to the dependencies array

I think here console.log() statement is executed before updating the state. As here await has been used so it will execute the next lines before getting the result.
Therefore , in this type of situation we use combination of useEffect() and useState(). useEffect() for getting the data and useState() for updating the state and re-render the UI.

Data coming in from socket doesn't update the state with useEffect

I'm connecting to sockets (modelled by setTimeouts!) and getting an array. On mount I get an initial array. Then I keep listening for updates to the array. An update is sent as just the change and not a whole array.
I need to access the current state, but it's empty. Even though it looks fine in the render.
I think this might be a scoping or closure bug caused by numbers being empty at the time of calling addLater(), but I'm not sure what the solution is.

When the next value depends on the previous one it's best to write the code as a functional update so the code will always be acting on the latest value. As you ran into, your current code closes over the original value of numbers, which isn't what you want:

React Hooks - Ref is not available inside useEffect

I am using ReactHooks. I am trying to access ref of User component in useEffect function, but I am getting elRef.current value as null, though I passed elRef.current as second argument to useEffect. I am supposed to get reference to an element, but outside (function body) of useEffect, ref value is available. Why is that ? How can I get elRef.current value inside useEffect?

You should use useCallback instead of useRef as suggested in the reactjs docs.
React will call that callback whenever the ref gets attached to a different node.
Replace this:

It's a predictable behaviour.
As mentioned #estus you faced with this because first time when it's called on componentDidMount you're getting null (initial value) and get's updated only once on next elRef changing because, actually, reference still being the same.
If you need to reflect on every user change, you should pass [user] as second argument to function to make sure useEffect fired when user is changed.

When you use a function as a ref, it is called with the instance when it is ready. So the easiest way to make the ref observable is to use useState instead of useRef:

Then you can use it in dependency arrays for other hooks, just like any other const value:

useEffect is used as both componentDidMount and componentDidUpdate,
at the time of component mount you added a condition:

because of the above condition at the time of mount, you don't have the user, so it returns null and div is not mounted in the DOM in which you are adding ref, so inside useEffect you are not getting elRef's current value as it is not rendered.
And on the click of next as the div is mounted in the dom you got the value of elRef.current.
The assumption here is that useEffect needs to detect changes to ref.current, so needs to have the ref or ref.currentin the dependencies list. I think this is due to es-lint being a bit over-pedantic.
Actually, the whole point of useEffect is that it guarantees not to run until the rendering is complete and the DOM is ready to go. That is how it handles side-effects.
So by the time useEffect is executed, we can be sure that elRef.current is set.
The problem with your code is that you don't run the renderer with <div ref={elRef}...> until after user is populated. So the DOM node you want elRef to reference doesn't yet exist. That is why you get the null logging - nothing to do with dependencies.
BTW: one possible alternative is to populate the div inside the effect hook:
