I am trying to debug aspx.net and c# code. An sql connection to a remote SQL server default instance should be opened.
The connection works fine if the windows firewall on the sql server host is down.
If the windows firewall is up I get an error:
named Pipes Provider Error 40 cannot open connection to Sql server instance
The dev machine is windows 10 with visual studio.
The machine with the ms sql server instance is a vm with windows 2012 with sql server 2012.
In that machine I get an error in the windows security events claiming that the user name or password is incorrect. This error is a bit strange since the user name and password must be correct (otherwise it would not work if the firewall was down)
I have already checked the sql server configuration manager TCP/IP and named pipes are enabled.
In the firewall I already set an exception allowing a TCP connection to port 1433.
In the sql server configuration manager - SQL Server network configuration - TCP/IP the listed port is 1433. So I cannot find my mistake in the firewall config. What am I missing?
Found the solution:
The firewall rule to allow port 1433 had to be extended. Even though switching off the private firewall made the access work did not mean that the firewall rule allowing access only in the private profile would be enough. Making the port 1433 available for all profiles (private, public, domain) solved the problem.
Thanks to Christian. Even though port 445 is not needed in my case your comment was still helpful. I tried it and it did not work. So key was to find out which port is the blocking one.
This can be done with a simple netstat command. Performing netstat first when the connection is down and then netstat when the connection is up is a very simple way to find out which port must be openend.

I am using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 17 to connect to a remote Microsoft SQL Server database. Looking at the connection dialog of Studio 17, I don't see any port number setting. Google tells me that Studio uses port 1433 by default.
I tried to use telnet to check if port 1433 is listening on the remote server: telnet example.company.com 1433
However, the connection failed. How can I find the port used for this database connection?
You could connect SSMS to your DB, run ProcessExplorer and examine the properties of ssms.exe. On the "TCP/IP" tab you possibly find what you are asking for:
Make sure you have connectivity to the server first. Since you mentioned "remote" there could be a firewall in the way, so your solution is going to depend on your network topology.
Can you ping the server? If ping works, I would reach out to the owner of the server and verify the DB connection parameters. Maybe your IP needs to be whitelisted. Etc. Etc.
Check if the server host has inbound port 1433 enabled, and whether TCP/IP is enabled using the SQL server configuration manager. If the SQL server instance in question sits on the cloud, you might want to check the specific provider's firewall rules on the container and adjust to permit 1433 inbound connections. The port setting entirely lies on where the actual SQL server instance sits. The management studio in your remote client will not be using any port.
I'm attempting to connect to a test Database on a Parallels VM on Mac using Azure Data Studio, but I'm getting the standard, generic connection error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): A network-related or

Steps I've taken so far to open the connection include:
Opening port 1433 through windows firewall
Ensuring remote connections are allowed on the SQL instance
Setting the TCP/IP Protocol to 5171 for IPAll
Running SQL Server and SQL Browser Instances
Adding a rule to windows firewall for sqlservr.exe to allow all connections
Enabling the SA account and adding a password (password is correct - I've double checked in SSMS on the VM)
I'm able to connect from the windows VM but not the Mac.
My connection string is below (IP is correct, again I've double checked):
Is there a step I've missed or some extra config that I need to do on the VM itself maybe? Or maybe the connection string isn't quite right? I've also tried using the Machine Alias to connect to the instance (SQLEXPRESS) - but still no joy. Anyone know what the problem might be because it's driving me crazy and I can see that other devs have made it work, so I know it's possible. My version of Parallels is Desktop 15, I don't know if that makes a difference or not?
Ok so turns out I needed to open the IPAll port I had set for the TCP/IP Config which in my case was 5171 as well as adding a rule to allow SQL Server Browser to connect to the internet.
For those of whom the above method doesn't work, try Bridged Network instead of Shared Networking in the Network settings and replace the old IP address with the new one.
I am able to connect to Microsoft SQL Server (in Parallels Desktop 16) using Visual Studio Code in macOS Big Sur.
I have a Windows Server 2016. In this server I have a SQL Server 2016 installed.
I must configure the sql server to allow remote connections because there are some databeses which synchronise with our local databases.
I do this by openning the SQL Server Configuration Manager, selecting SQL Server Network Configuration and enabling the TCP/IP protocol.
But, this causes a security gap.
I realised that the SQL Log File C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log is constantly increaising the size.
By analysing the log file, I realised that there are some IP addresses tries to connect constantly with a wrong password (15 times per minute).
As I need to keep open the TCP/IP protocol, I tried to add an inbound firewall rule to the firewall but it doesn't change anything.
First, I tried to disable the TCP/IP and authorise connections from a defined IP. It didn't work.
Then, I tried to enable TCP/IP and block the port 1433 for any IP but it doesn't block. I can connect from a local pc.
Briefly, if I enable the TCP/IP, the remote connection is enabled to any IP. If I disable the TCP/IP, the remote connection is disabled to any IP. It doesn't consider the firewall rule.
Is there a way to enable the remote connection for a specific IP Address ?

I faced recently the same issue and fixed it by setting customised rule in windows Firewall:
1) Enable TCPIP, otherwise no connection will be possible
2) then you should use the windows firewall as follows:
first Block the port 1433 for any inbound connection
then add a customised rule to port 1433 for which you authorise connections from only specific Ip address, you can follow the steps explained in this link

I forwarded port 1433 to 9082 on my server, at firewall set to allow for inbound and outbound, at SQL Server Allow Remote is ON.

I had problem with this as well. It's been bugging me for days now. Finally I stumbled on solution on this page so I'll exclude it as screenshot:

First off check in the ERRORLOG the port used by SQL Server (there is no guarantee it will always listen on 1433, or if TCP is enabled at all).
In the ERRORLOG, at startup, you will find a line like this one:
In my case the port is indeed 1433 but yours may be different. If needed, you can change it using the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
Secondly, if you are forwarding a port to a different one (like your example from 1433 to 9082) you are in fact disabling the SQL Server Browser. This happens because SQL Server Browser does not know of your port forward so it will tell the clients to connect to 1433 (supposing you are allowing UDP 1434 otherwise you won't be able to reach SQL Server Browser at all).
You can connect to a SQL Instance without using the SQL Server Browser though, all you need is to specify the port in the connection string (without the instance name, if any).
For example, if your instance is called MYSERVER/INST your connection string will be something like:
User ID=*****;Password=*****;server=tcp:MYSERVER,9082
Also make sure to configure your SPNs manually otherwise Kerberos won't work.

I'm running SQL Server 2008 Express on Windows XP on a VirtualPC instance inside a Windows XP host. I want to be able to connect to databases on the guest instance using SSMS on the host. When I go to connect from SSMS on the host, and browse for servers, I see the instance of SQL Server on the guest. Yet when I try to connect, using a SQL authentication login, I get the following connection error:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 28 - Server doesn't support requested protocol) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)
I have:
* tried connecting with both Name Pipes and TCP/IP
* ensured that the SQL Browser service is up
* ensured that the firewall on the guest is open
* the server is configured to allow remote connections (according to the database engine properties within SSMS on the guest)
What am I missing?

Thanks for the ideas. After much fiddling I got things working. It turned out that I had not gone into the Sql Server Configuration Manager and enabled TCP/IP and Named Pipes as network protocols. So even though SSMS said remote connections were enabled, there was no protocol to allow for them other than shared memory. After I did this I restarted the SQL Server service, but things still didn't seem to work properly. Yet once I had rebooted both the guest and host, everything was working as expected.
How are your IP settings? Are you sharing the same IP address between the two machines? If so, then perhaps when your clients attempt to connect to 10.1.1.10, it is hitting the IP of the machine hosting the VPC instance, and that machine is not running the SQL Server instance. If possible, have VPC get its own IP and try that.
Mostly double check what you have already said,
turn off the guest firewall to make sure it isn't that.
Make sure your virtual machine networking is set to bridged and not NAT.
Try connecting to the IP address of the guest instead of its name.
Make sure the remote connections are allowed by SQL server and that both client and server are using tcp/ip (or named pipes if you prefer).
I don't know if enabling remote connections requires a restart of SQL server.
Try using SQL authentication to eliminate an authentication issue. Are you running on a domain?
To add some steps that are not explicitly called out above, what worked in my experience was to set up the Virtual PC's Networking to my physical network adapter.
Then disabled Windows Firewall for the Public Profile.
Hopefully could actually lock that down to port 1433.
Also, on the guest OS, if SQL Server is installed with only Windows Auth, you later add SQL auth, note that by default 'sa' is disabled for login access. Either 'enable' Login for 'sa' or (better idea) create Logins with appropriate permissions as needed.
