I want to install an instance of SQL Sever Analysis Services locally for development use. The Documentation indicates that this can be done with the installation exe, but I can't find that option when I run the developer exe from the installation site.
This page indicates that it should be available.
I figured it out.
Download the installer
Select custom installation
Choose the 1st link to add features to an existing installation and follow the link.

Check if sqlncli.msi exists in %PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK. If it does not exist use the subsequent steps to download, uninstall, and re-install it to resolve this error.

The SQL Server Native Client header and library files (sqlncli.h and sqlncli10.lib) are installed in the following location:

You can distribute (install) SQL Server Native Client through sqlncli.msi. You might have to install SQL Server Native Client when you deploy an application. One way to install multiple packages in what seems to the user to be a single installation is to use chainer and bootstrapper technology. For more information, see Authoring a Custom Bootstrapper Package for Visual Studio 2005 and Adding Custom Prerequisites.
The x64 and Itanium versions of sqlncli.msi also install the 32-bit version of SQL Server Native Client. If your application targets a platform other than the one it was developed on, you can download versions of sqlncli.msi for x64, Itanium, and x86 from the Microsoft Download Center.
When you invoke sqlncli.msi, only the client components are installed by default. The client components are are files that support running an application that was developed using SQL Server Native Client. To also install the SDK components, specify ADDLOCAL=All on the command line. For example:

Use SQL Server Installation Center to add SSIS
I am trying to install MS SQL SERVER 2016 with SQL Server R Services using web installer and command line.
I am doing this based on this article https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt695943.aspx
Using same web installer, but not command line works perfectly. All desired features are there.
Problem is that command line installation installs only SQLEngine and Replication features.
Logs investigation does not help much. It seems that proper files have not been downloaded and this is the reason why they are missing
My command line is:
SQLServer2016-SSEI-Expr.exe /ConfigurationFile=C:\temp\configuration.ini /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /MediaPath=C:\SQLSetup /ENU
And the configuration file content is

It seems your INI file asks SQLServer to install only few features like SQLEngine and analytics.
when you specify
FEATURES=SQL,Tools
SQL will install..
. The SQL feature will install the database engine, replication, and full-text. The Tools feature will install Management Tools, Books online, SQL Server Data Tools, and other shared components
when you specify
FEATURES=SQLENGINE,REPLICATION,FULLTEXT,CONN,IS,BC,SDK,SSMS,ADV_SSMS,OCS
It will install all the above mentioned features
so you might be missing some features due to the way you are specifying

I had sql server 2008 r2 express edition in my PC .But i unistalled it ,In order to install Sql server 2008 Enterprise edition trial version in my PC.
But some features in sql server 2008 showing "attempt to perform an unauthorized operation" error during installation process.
My operating system is windows 7 home basic 64 bit.
these are the feature which are showing error while installation:
sql server database engine service
sql server replication
sql server analysis services
please help me with this issue
Here's a couple things to try from people who have had similar problems:
Check: %\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\SystemConfigurationCheck_Report.htm
Copy installation files to disk and run from there.
Run setup as administrator.
Create a new local administrator account and use that to run the installation.
When error occurs, dont exit installation, run process monitor trace, click retry for installation, stop trace, locate registry key where where access denied is, give your account temporary full control on that key, retry again.

Download the latest service pack package that matches you system architecture. For example download the x64 package of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 if your system is an x64-based system.
Extract the service pack by running the following command:

I have been googling for this issue a lot but there were no solution working for me. atlast , I formatted my system for a fresh install which worked fr me.
The solution is simple.
1 - Install ONLY "Sql Server Database Engine"
2 - Start installation again and add any other features to your instance
P.S. No need to run as Admin or in Windows 7 compat-mode (if you are installing on 8 or 10)
In my Case, creating an Administrator Windows Account and installing SQL Server worked!
Also you can simply activate the built-in windows Administrator Account by running the "net user administrator /active:yes" command in command prompt(Admin Mode), then log in as Administrator. Now You can Install SQL Server without problem!
Finally I should say that you can use SQL Server from your own normal windows account after Installation and I recommend deactivating Administrator Account by "net user administrator /active:no"
Does anyone know if there is some type of bug in the installation of SQL Server 2008 R2? It seems if you have Express edition installed, then upgrade to anything (developer, enterprise, etc.) the SQL Server tools that don't come with Express will never show up because the Express edition is installed on your computer. *Even though you just paid for Enterprise edition
This has happened to me on 3 different computers. I have to copy the binn folder from a computer that actually works. Just today I decided to try to uninstall the Express edition before upgrading - instead of letting Microsoft handling the upgrade and it worked. I'm thinking maybe this is a bug...
When you upgrade from Express version, need to install Management Tools - Complete -
I know this question is old and answered, but I was having the same problem. I wanted to upgrade from Express to Developer and none of these answers helped me.
What I´ve done to be able to add features is:
Open the SQL Server Installation Center.
Click on Maintenance > Edition Upgrade and follow the steps.
Click on Installation > New installation or add features to an existing installation and follow the steps.
There you can add all the new features from your new version of SQL Server. Hope that helped..

If you installed Express before Enterprise/Developer you most likely have Management Tools - Basic installed. I used the following steps to get SQL Server Profiler Installed, which is bundled with the Management Tools - Complete tool set.
Step 1: Remove Management Tools - Basic
Control "Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features"
Uninstall/Change "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2"
Select "Remove"
In the "Select Instance" dialog, "Instances to remove features from:" drop-down choose Remove shared features only
Check "Management Tools - Basic"
Follow the rest of the uninstall dialogs
Step 2: Install Management Tools - Complete
Run setup from the Enterprise\Developer Edition installation media
Choose "New installation or add features to an existing installation"
A few screens later choose "SQL Server Feature Installation"
Check "Shared Features -> Management Tools-Complete"
Follow the rest of the dialogs to install.
You should now have SQL Server Profiler installed.
You need to select full management tools in the features during install I believe. Just go run the installer again, select modify existing instance, and add the checkboxes for management tools
SQL Server installation, when doing an upgrade, is only going to upgrade those components currently installed. If you want the additional tools available with a higher edition you will have to rerun the installation and select to add addtional components. Then as Darren suggested select the full management tools option.
We have the full version of SQL 2008 Server (first release) installed and licensed from download (a couple years ago). Now we are getting into Reporting Services; however, it seems only the Express version of Reporting Services is installed.
In the control panel under Services, I only see "SQL Reporting Services (SQLEXPRESS)" listed. [Express is ALSO on the server]
I do not think the Reporting Services option was selected when we initially installed. I would like to go back and Change the installation, however I cannot find the SQL 2008 R1 installation disk or download.

If you can't find the original SQL Server 2008 installation media and don't have any subscriptions with Microsoft that entitle you to digital downloads of your purchased software, then I think you can try downloading the Enterprise Evaluation copy from here and using your existing license key for Standard in the installation process. After that, you should be able to add the Reporting Services features. Definitely backup your server before trying this, of course.
Failing that, you can install the trial version from scratch and use your license to upgrade it to the non-time-limited version (the upgrade paths allow for this).
Microsoft does not licence Release Candidate (RC) software for production environments or long-term use. Instead, these are basically their version of beta software. In a production environment, you must use RTM software. If you check your license agreement from your initial download, you should see that you should be using the RC1 version of SQL Server 2008 only for testing.
As for how to install Reporting Services on an RTM version, unfortunately you are going to need the media. Since you believe you have a valid license, contact Microsoft and request a copy of the media. Once you have it, just run the setup.exe and it will allow you to modify your SQL installation to include SSRS.
