pass state to functional component without using props - reactjs

Is there a way to access state in a functional component without passing in props? I have a component which passes a default set of props, and I am not able to add to or edit to this list of props (it's part of a third-party plugin, so this makes sense). I know I could use redux to set/access the variable, but I would prefer not to do this, as it is information that would not otherwise need to be in redux.

Redux/MobX - Do I need to pass data in child components via props in React?

I know It may sound like a dumb question, But I am not able to get this solved in my head. Please bear with me.
In case when we use a state management system in React like Redux / Mob X, I guess the main purpose of these state management techniques is to provide a single source of Data and a more structured approach of updating it.
Say, I am Using a state management library(MobX) for React, And suppose I have a parent component which makes an http API call and updates the MobX store with the API response. Now I need that data in one of child/nested components.
My Question is, Should I pass that data as a prop to child component or should I enable child component to connect with Central Store and directly get that data ?
by connecting the child to store, I am turning the Child into a class component, which is making it more heavy and React optimisations may not apply. I am defeating the whole purpose of a functional component.

This completely depends on the situation. I would suggest splitting your components up in 2 parts:
Components that could be re-used in other projects
(Higher level) Components that are so specific to this project that they probably never will be re-used.
For components of category 1, I would suggest not using mobx store directly, but instead make pure react components. (eg think of a dropdown, or an ajax dropdown component).
For second part components (think of, header, footer, section components specific for your website). just make them directly interact with the Mobx store, so that you can way quicker code what you need (instead of constantly having to prop everything).

For components of category 1 you can always wrap them with the #inject() method. This way for example you could turn a dropdown component into a UserDropdown component that uses the mobx store for its state. (The inject method injects mobx state as props in the component).

Warning
For pure components wont always see changes of mobx state. To Fix this you need to wrap the component in an #observe annotation. Or you have to inject the props by wrapping it into: mobx.toJS(yourMobxStateProperty)

Use Connect or pass data as props to children

I am new to react and redux. I have a scenario where there are nested components like this.
A > B > C > D
There is a property used in A component and it will be used in D component. So, I have two approaches:
Get state from redux store in component A and then pass it along as props to all it's child components even though it will be used only in D component.
I should connect to redux store in component D and fetch that property from there.
What is the correct approach?
As Dan Abramov, author of redux says in this issue

So in simple words:
You can use connect() at any level. Doing so makes the component smart, since it knows where its props come from. A dumb component just has props, and they could come from anywhere. A smart component is coupled to redux; a dumb component is not.

The same concept applies to useSelectors too. You can receive data in a container component and pass on to your presentational components, if multiple of its children make use of the same data
If however the data used by the children is different, you can choose to use useSelector individually within the child component. This will make sure that only those components re-render which actually need to
I would suggest if you are already using redux in your app then set the property in the redux store and fetch it in the component D.
But if the work flow is really simple and all the data is fetched from a single source per view, you can avoid redux as it is for complex state management.

Good practice to pass Action creators to functional components in a react-redux app?

I've converted most of my containers to functional components to make them reusable and I'm wondering if it's good practice to pass Action Creators as props to theses functional components.
In this case, I'm using a tab to switch between Login and Sign Up page and I'm using local state to manage active class (for styling). I call action creators passed down as props to switch between rendering a login or sign up page. I'm using this tab in several places and I'm passing a different configuration object as per use cases.

The active tab style is giving me problems (retains value when reusing the component). Can I have local & global state? (Sorry if this sounds stupid.)
Passing functions as a props down the hierarchy of your Components is for sure widely accepted practice. But I would suggest not to pass bare action creators, but bind them to dispatch before passing them to Component. This way, if your child Component is not connected to store it will not have to know about Redux at all (no need to manually dispatch).
As for your complication with two states. There is nothing wrong in mixing own Component's state with part of Redux passed to Component via connect. I would even strongly recommend to keep all temporary data not important to your application logic inside Component's state without exposing it to Redux. For example, most of the time, there is no sense in sending animation timings, intermediate state of user input, etc. to Redux.
But, in your case looks like indication of active tab is a direct reflection of Redux state and should be fetched from store. Otherwise it's not clear why you are sending actions to Redux on tab's change.

Will using the React props spread operator significantly slow-up my application?

When passing props down into a React component I am currently of doing this:

foo and bar are props that I know MyComponent will need. However, in most cases MyComponent also has components within it that need props from higher components, hence I use the {...this.props} operator to pass them forward. Should I be doing this, or should I be listing out exactly the props that the child components of MyComponent will need?
You should use a state management like Flux, Redux or Mobx (i think, haven't used Mobx at all) to combat this problem of passing props through multiple levels without the intermediate components needing them.
You should be passing only the props exactly needed down to the child. I read a great post on github about this but can't find it.
It's just hard to manage when your app grows and it's really an abuse of the Es6 spread syntax operator (i.e it makes it easy short term to pass props down, but long term you still have the problem, you are just masking it). Not sure if it slows down application but it will re-render all child components again if the prop changed which is unnecessary.
For example when using Redux you can "connect" components to a global state (think databases) and pass them through as props for whichever components you want and bypass components having to forward props to child components.
It's hard at first to learn but 1000% worth it.
You should pass in only the props needed, or implement a container component that only passes in the props needed. Or you can implement shouldComponentUpdate on your component. The easiest way to get performance is to only pass in the required props though.

Those are very valid questions. I've been there and I know how frustrating it is to read about redux and not understanding anything. For some reason people like to use fancy words, which sounds complicated but in reality things are very simple and easy.
What is Redux?
Redux is a Flux architecture. In simple words it will help you to manage the global state of your app.
How does it work exactly?
Redux will create a single "store", this store will have all the data that you need to render in your components, you can update the data using "actions", you will call the actions from your components, these actions will transfer the new data to the "reducers", inside of a reducer you will basically copy the data from the components to the global state (reducers should be pure functions).
How is it useful to react?
It's very useful! Mainly because you will be able to share data across components. Also by having a global state you could save it to the local storage (or a database) to add offline support.
What is the different between states and props?
You can define props to describe the properties that the component will receive when creating instances, you can think of props like parameters, for example:
<MyComponent name="Crysfel" lastname="Villa" />
The previous component is receiving two props, name and lastname. Props will allow you to send data from ComponentA to ComponentB, assuming ComponentB is a child of ComponentA. Props will also help you to receive data from redux. As a rule of thumb, you should never modify the value of the props, these values are just to receive data.
State on the other hand is an object that might contain configurations for your component, the idea is to handle the state of the component, for example a collapsible container, you could have a toggle property in the component's state and toggle the value when user clicks a button. However when using redux you will rarely use the component's state, because Redux is managing the state of your app.
For your second question about sending data between component, you would use redux for that, ComponentA should call an action and send the new data to the global state, then redux will update your component with the new data and then you can render the new data into ComponentB (using props).

Redux is an implementation of the ideas of Flux with a few architectural differences. You can think of it as a library that helps you create a central data store that passes data one-way into React components. It allows you to maintain global state outside of the components themselves.
A top-level container component typically listens to the store and re-renders whenever the store data changes (see the connect function). The data is then passed from the container component into the children components that need that data so they can render properly.
