Ref keeps returning null - reactjs

I looked at lots of ref examples, not one is working. Can someone tell me why this ref keeps returning null?

How can I pass state to grandparent so that uncle/aunt can use it?

I've been struggling for hours trying to get some code to work. I'm new with React, but I have spent a lot time looking for a solution to this as well, and updating this code as I understood with no success.
Basically my app is a component that splits into two components, with one of those splitting into 9 buttons. When I click one of those buttons, I want its uncle/aunt to recognize that, and use the id of the button that was pushed to create a message.
I figured I should be passing the button id up to the grandparent so that it can pass the id down to the uncle/aunt. But its the passing the id to the grandparent I'm struggling with.

Firstly, the getX() method of the App component doesn't seem to be working how I expected it to. By that I mean, when I add getX("7"); to the render method of the App component, just before the return statement, the whole thing crashes. But if I replace this.setState({"x": x}) with this.state.x = x in the getX() method, then the state sucessfully passes down to the component B, which is something at least. But, I don't understand why.
Secondly, I can't work out how to modify the App component's state from within component A. The getX() method of the App component doesn't seem to be passed into component A as I expected. Again, if I insert getX("7"); before the return statement of component A, the whole thing crashes again. I expected the getX function of component A to be the same function as the getX method of the App component, and therefore update the state of the App component. But I've had no success with that at all. I've even tried inserting this.getX = this.getX.bind(this) into the constructor of the App component, but that didn't solve everything for me.
Lastly, as you can probably guess, I cant modify the App component's state from any of the C components.
Any ideas? I'm stumped.
I have modified your example so that it works. A few things:
Dont copy props to state, that is an antipattern and creates bugs (as you have seen). Dont copy the id or the function passed from component A to component C, or in component B. Just use the props values.
You had some syntax errors that I fixed.
You didnt return the array created in component A.
(This is my preference, but I will argue that you are setting a value, not getting, so i renamed getX to setX.)
There was nothing returned from component C. I was not sure what you was suppoosed to be returning from that component, so I just created a button with a click-handler.

I'm doing the Drum Machine Project in freeCodeCamp. I'm currently stuck here. I'm trying to trigger the audio with a click, and from my research it seems that I need to use ref to make this work. But I'm stuck. I keep getting null when I console.log() the ref.current.

I want to add the user to the options array which I have defined inside the state. Problem is whenever I use prevstate.options.concat([username]). it shows this error. While when I just push username using this.state.push(username) to the array no error occurs. But for good practice in React we never alter directly the state variable, that's why I was using prevstate so I want to know why I am getting this error.

You're issue seems to have been using this.State instead of this.state (lower case s) multiple times in your component. And this looks why you were receiving your error.

Child not updating after Parent State changed

I am quite new with React and I have problem bellow
I have a parent component like this:

I have method "shouldComponentUpdate" returns "false" in Parent component because I don't want to re-render it.
My understanding is React know which part of DOM need to be re-rendered. And in this case, the state of Parent changes will re-render "Test" component
But when I run above code, "Test" component does not redender.
Is there anything wrong in my code?

You need to return true from your parent's shouldComponentUpdate method.
If you return false, after the initial render it won't update, even if you call a function that calls setState.
Is the refresh of the whole page are you talking about? If thats the case, probably you wanna change your <a> tag to button or use e.preventDefault();.
If not, I am not sure if that is possible. If you setState in the parent, it will rerender parent as well as the children. If you dont want to render the parent then you have to manage individual state management in the child level.

React.js, why my class component doesn't rerender the element, but functional component can work?

I'm new to react.js, just follow the tutorial. Here is my code. At first, i tried to use the class Component 'Greeting' to let it show different words after

The reason the class component doesn't re render, is because you have stored the logged_in prop in state from the constructor, and the constructor is only called once. Also state can only be modified from within the component.
To fix this you have 2 options;
Use componentWillReceiveProps, and update the local state with the new logged_in prop.

Or; do not use state but use the prop directly.

Where I think you should use the latter, since the parent component already maintains state.
Well to be honest the answer which I posted previously was wrong. It was because the way you posted the question telling that everything works fine when function based component is added. Then I created a project using your code and figured out few issues in your code.
Firstly you are maintaining state locally outside redux here. You are passing down the state of the login from the parent LoginComponent to the child component called Greeting like this.
greeting = <Greeting is_logon={this.state.is_logon} />
This gets passed as a props to the child component which is Greeting in this case. Remember React uses one way data flow.
Now from that child component you can access the data using this.props as shown below. You don't need to maintain any local state what so ever there.
Do the following changes in your Greeting component.

Then make sure you access the values from this.props instead of any local state object like this.
