React-Router/Redux browser back button functionality - reactjs

I'm building a 'Hacker News' clone, Live Example using React/Redux and can't get this final piece of functionality to work. I have my entire App.js wrapped in BrowserRouter, and I have withRouter imported into my components using window.history. I'm pushing my state into window.history.pushState(getState(), null, `/${getState().searchResponse.params}`) in my API call action creator. console.log(window.history.state) shows my entire application state in the console, so it's pushing in just fine. I guess. In my main component that renders the posts, I have

what happens when I press the back button is, the URL bar updates with the correct previous URL, but after a second, the page reloads to the main index URL(homepage). Anyone know how to fix this? I can't find any real documentation(or any other questions that are general and not specific to the OP's particular problem) that makes any sense for React/Redux and where to put the onpopstate or what to do insde of the onpopstate to get this to work correctly.

I tried changing window.history.back() to this.props.history.goBack() and didn't work. Does my code make sense? Am I fundamentally misunderstanding the History API?

withRouter HOC gives you history as a prop inside your component, so you don't use the one provided by the window.
You should be able to access the window.history even without using withRouter.
so it should be something like:

How to run a function when user clicks the back button, in React.js?

I looked around and tried to find a solution with React router.
With V5 you can use <Promt />.
I tried also to find a vanilla JavaScript solution, but nothing worked for me.
I use React router v6 and histroy is replaced with const navigate = useNavigation() which doesn't have a .listen attribute.
Further v6 doesn't have a <Promt /> component.
Nevertheless, at the end I used useEffect clear function. But this works for all changes of component. Also when going forward.
According to the react.js docs, "React performs the cleanup when the component unmounts."

Currently the Prompt component (and usePrompt and useBlocker) isn't supported in react-router-dom#6 but the maintainers appear to have every intention reintroducing it in the future.
If you are simply wanting to run a function when a back navigation (POP action) occurs then a possible solution is to create a custom hook for it using the exported NavigationContext.
Example:

If using the UNSAFE_NavigationContext context is something you'd prefer to avoid then the alternative is to create a custom route that can use a custom history object (i.e. from createBrowserHistory) and use the normal history.listen. See my answer here for details.

Infinite console logging in React.js component

I'm working on my MERN app, and when I'm logging smth in NewsPage component, it logs infinitely.

It works correctly, I can fetch news from and post news to my backend, but if I log anything in console, it would be logging infinitely, and I will not get any error.
is there a way to fix this, and is this a real problem?
Its likely because whatever function the console log is located in is being used in render, which itself is a loop. Otherwise, there is no other way that I can see why it would repeat. It probably won't end up being a problem, unless the code you are executing slows down, which might cause performance issues in the future.
You're tracking fetchNews and postNews in your useEffect array, which will re-rerun fetchNews(); on every render.

Actually, you have wrong useEffect usage.
Effect would be called each time when component receive new props, so, it looks like this:
1) Component mounts, call function from useEffect
2) It makes API call, update data in store
3) Data passed to container, updates "dumb" component
4) Dumb component makes re-rendering, calling func from useEffect, and that's infinity loop.
In fact, It is pretty weird that you don't have memory leak.
What you can do, is:
1) Add some conditional rendering. I pretty sure, you need to call it only on initial load.
2) Add something like ImmutableJS, it would not re-render component and would not mutate store if nothing has changed

Display loading state and change route when API call is successfull

While working on a side project, I faced an issue with react-router-dom.
What I want to implement is: When I submit a Form, I need to save the data on my server. While the request is pending, I need to display a loading indicator. Once the server says everything is ok, I need to redirect the user on a new page

However, how do I tell react-router to load a new path once the request is successful?
Right now, I've done that by using withRouter and using this.props.history as a second argument for this.props.addNotification.
It works great, but it seems really wrong
I've seen solutions using react-router-redux, but I don't really want to add a new middleware to my store.
Should I make the API call inside my component and use a Promise?
Any help?

After working a little on my own React project, and thinking about similar situations where I handle route changes there, I decided I want to change my original answer. I think the callback solution is OK, but the solution that you already mentioned of making the API call inside your component and using a promise is better. I realized that I've actually been doing this in my own app for a while now.
I use redux-form in my app, and it provides onSubmitSuccess/onSubmitFail functions that you can use to handle the submit result, and each of those rely on you returning a promise (usually from your action creator).
I think the fact that one of the most popular packages for form submission in React/Redux supports this pattern is an indication that it's probably a good pattern to use. Also, since react-router passes history into your component, it seems logical that they expect most people to do a lot of their programmatic route changes inside the component.
Here's an example of what the promise solution would look like with your code:

You should not write your asynchronous calls in reducers or actions as the documentation clearly suggests them to be pure functions. You will have to introduce a redux-middleware like redux-thunk or redux-saga (I personally prefer sagas)
All your async calls will happen inside the middleware, and when it succeeds, you can use react-routers history .replace() or .push() methods to update your route. Let me know if it makes sense

Update route and redux state data at same time

I have an app that has user profiles. On the user profile there are a list of friends, and when clicking on a friend it should take you to that other user profile.
Currently, when I click to navigate to the other profile (through redux-router Link) it updates the URL but does not update the profile or render the new route.
Here is a simplified code snippet, I've taken out a lot of code for simplicity sake. There are some more layers underneath but the problem happens at the top layer in my Profile Container. If I can get the userId prop to update for ProfileSections then everything will propagate through.

As you can see, what happens is that I am running the getUser action on componentWillMount, which will happen only once and is the reason the route changes but the profile data does not update.
When I change it to another lifecycle hook like componentWillUpdate to run the getUser action, I get in an endless loop of requests because it will keep updating the state and then update component.
I've also tried using the onEnter hook supplied by react-router on Route component but it doesn't fire when navigating from one profile to another since it's the same route, so that won't work.
I believe I'm thinking about this in the wrong way and am looking for some guidance on how I could handle this situation of navigating from one profile to another while the data is stored in the redux store.

Note that I have it set up so in the componentWillMount lifecycle method, you make the request for the initial userId. The code in the componentWillReceiveProps method checks to see if a new user ID has been received (which will happen when you navigate to a different profile) and re-fetches the data if so.
You may consider using componentDidMount and componentDidUpdate instead of componentWillMount and componentWillReceiveProps respectively for the fetchUserData calls, but it could depend on your use case.

Need individual entry with Redux and Router

I'm using ReactJS, Redux (with server-side rendering) and react-router-redux as set up here and am getting a little thrown by how routes work with the rest of the redux state and actions.
For example, I have a members component with the route /members:

the static need array specifies an action that populates an array on the state that is then mapped to the component props. That much works.
But then I have an individual member component with the route members/:memberId. How do I load that individual member in a way that works both client- and server-side.
What I'm doing now is the same:

This works but is obviously wrong. So the question is two-fold:
When the user clicks the router Link that has a query param (:memberId), how do I use that router param to query a specific document (assume a mongo database). Do I somehow trigger a separate action that populates an active member field on the redux state? Where does this happen, in the route component's componentDidMount?
How does this work with server-side rendering?
I’ve had the same question and seemed to find a way that works pretty well with my setup. I use Node, Express, React, React Router, Redux and Redux Thunk.
1) It really depends on where your data is. If the data needed for /member/:memberId is already in state (e.g. from an earlier call) you could theoretically filter through what you already have when componentDidMount is fired.
However, I'd prefer to keep things separate simply to avoid headaches. Starting to use one data source for multiple destinations/purposes throughout your app might give you long days down the road (e.g. when Component A needs more/less properties about the member than Component B or when Component A needs properties in a different format than Component B etc.).
This decision should of course be based on your use-case but due to the cost of API calls nowadays I wouldn't be afraid (at all) to make one when someone navigates to /member/:memberId.

It’ll look for fetchData on the components that are about to be rendered, and make sure we have the data before we send anything to the client.
On each and every route, I have a Container. The Container’s sole purpose is to gather the data needed for that route. As you’ve touched upon this can happen server-side (fetchData in my case) or client-side (componentDidMount in my case). A typical Container of mine looks like this:

As displayed above I have both dispatch and getState available thanks to Redux Thunk - that handles my promises too - which gives me freedom use the data I already have, request new data and do multiple updates of my reducer.

The answer, it turns out, was pretty simple. The implementation taken from Isomorphic Redux App ties the need static property on a component back to the router by passing the routes query params into the action creator.
So for the route:

you'd use a component like
