i am trying to connect with Azure SQL database using SSMS but i am getting the bellow error message
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while
establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or
was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that
SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named
Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)
We had enabled all the necessary ports also restart the SQL server, added client 'ip' in Azure firewall settings. previously we are able to connect but we changed the location of our Azure SQL server after that we are not able to connect but i can connect to another server which is located at the different location.
I found this article: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: XXX) may give you some useful messages.
Basically, this error message just tell you that the client cannot make a connection to the server. It's equvalent to "SQL Server does not exist or access denied" in MDAC. Although the error message say about Named Pipe Provider, the issue does not have to be NP related. The reason is that, by default, the client stack try TCP and NP in order. If the connection attempt could not success with any of them, then NP is the last protocol tried and this is the error message to present to users.
When users see this error message, sometimes xxx is omitted. But actually, xxx is the most important part of this error message. xxx is Windows error code and it gives customer hints about why the connection fails. Here are some error code users often see. I also explain the root cause and possible solutions here.
1) xxx=53
winerr 53 means "The network path was not found". If you got this message, it means the client stack cannot find the target machine.
Here are possible reasons for this failure:
a. typo in the server name, or using "/" rather than "" between server name and instance name, e.g. "myserver/myinst" is not correct.
b. name resolution to the server name is not correct, "ping -a yourserver" would tell if that's the case.
c. The server machine is firewall'ed and file sharing is not in the exception list. You need put "File and Printer Sharing" in exception.
Hope this can helps you.

I have a very weird issue with SSAS Tabular connecting to a SQL Server source database. I've spent almost the entire day on this, and searched online in various ways to find a helpful answer, but none of the suggestions solved this mysterious problem for me.
It used to work fine, but I tried various connection settings (Windows vs SQL authentication, and different impersonation modes), but now I no longer can get it to work (even if I revert back to the previous bim file in source control).
When I process a table from the WORKSPACE database (through SSMS), it works. But when I process a table from the DEPLOYED database (still through SSMS), it does NOT work.
The connection I am using is:
-SQL Server Native Client 11.0
-Windows Authentication
-Impersonation mode of a Windows account (which has the appropriate permissions)
The source database is in a SQL Server database located on a different server (but in the same network).
I have searched everywhere online, but didn't find anything that could help me.
I have tried changing the connection driver (OLE DB Provider for SQL Server), and I have restarted the SSAS Tabular service.
The full error message I get when trying to process a table on the deployed database is:
Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: 'OLE DB or ODBC error: Login timeout expired; HYT00; A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.; 08001; Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [5]. ; 08001.
A connection could not be made to the data source with the Name of 'DataWarehouse'.
'.
In fact, after I tried a second time to restart the SSAS Tabular service, the error message I get after attempting to process a table is slightly different:
Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: 'OLE DB or ODBC error: A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.; 08001; SSL Provider: The requested security package does not exist
; 08001; Client unable to establish connection; 08001; Encryption not supported on the client.; 08001.
A connection could not be made to the data source with the Name of 'DataWarehouse'.
'.
According to your description, it seems to be related to connection problem. You need to check whether corresponding SQL server service and SSAS Service is running(check server which contains "DataWarehouse" is running and can be connected). You could go to "SQL Server Configuration Manager " to restart them.
In addition, you also need to make sure your current windows credential can access this database(if you use window credential). And check whether this server enable remote connect.

I recently install SQL server 2014 in my PC and I selected SQL authentication rather than Windows authentication after completion of installation when I tried to log in my server it shows this error even my server name and password was correct even though it shows this what to do now!!
following is the error message shows when I try to log in.....
TITLE: Connect to Server
Cannot connect to AADI_SQLSERVER.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. The network path was not found
As the error states "network-related or instance-specific error" its related not being able to find the instance.
This maybe due wrong instance name, Check the spellings of the server that you are connecting to.
You may have installed a named instance like sqlexpress in that case the server name should be {YourServer}\Sqlexpress.
You can get your instance name by going to services, if its MSSQLSERVER you can connect with the machine name else you should provide the correct instance name.
Please refer the screenshot below.
If you are connecting to another machine check the network configuration of the instance by going to sql server configuration manager. If the status is disabled you can connect from outside.
If that also fails better check the firewall settings
I have to change my notebook to a new one. And I get this error :
TITLE: Connect to Server
Cannot connect to xxx.xxx.x.xx.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1312)
A specified logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated
The question is: why can't I connect to the database on my server (a physical server, not a notebook or PC) by IP address on this new notebook, while on the old I was able to do so?
I already tried to export and import the settings from my old notebook and following those steps written in this msdn forum too but nothing has changed.
All services is enabled, TCP/IP = Enabled, Both port has a default 1433 value, Named Pipes = yes
My old notebook has Windows 7 with default SQL Server installation, and my new notebook has the same too, but I decided to upgrade the OS to Windows 10 because I think it will fix the problem.
Now I have Windows 10 installed with No security software installed and Force disabling Firewall by Registry so it doesn't block the connection. But the problem is still there.
Could somebody help, please ?
I Found a solution but it's kinda ridiculous, I logged out my Microsoft Account and it works. But I still hope someone can explain why this can be happened. So if you guys have another solution, please put some here so I can learn it more about and to fix this error in another method.
I configured the SQLAzure database. I configured the firewall for my IP and when am trying to connect to that database from my local using SQL Server Management studio, getting below error
TITLE: Connect to Server Cannot connect to XXXXX.database.windows.net.

The network path was not found
How to resolve this issue?
Please also check network protocol when you connect to Azure database via SSMS. It seems you are using named pipes and TCP/IP is excepted.
Hi Bravo are you able to browse the instance via Visual Studio if you have it installed?
Can you also confirm that you are not behind a corp firewall that blocks 1433 outbound?
Really minor thing but the title of the error has a trailing "." which if that is the machine name you are trying to connect to won't work - it may just be appended by the error message.
You can try a few things:
Ensure SQLAzure database name is correct (the error that you posted translates to name doesn't even exist)
Try adding port number at end of the connection
XXXXX.database.windows.net,1433
If the issue still persists, try pinging the SQLAzure from your local machine.
For the past month I have been using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio tool to connect to my database which created on the Azure portal. Recently I received updates from Microsoft related to Microsoft Visual Studio. After I installed these, I can't connect to my SQL database (previously it was working fine). Update History Screenshot I attached the screenshot of recent updates (which I installed) and the error message for your view.Error Message
Please help to solve this issue.
note: I am an SQL beginner, so I don't know many technical things related to tools, so please keep your answers to my level, Thanks!
Update: Error Message

The network path was not found
This error means that you tried to create a connection to an endpoint and you were expecting a acknowledgment from sql server, however, that acknowledgement did not occur. This means that you are either blocked by your own network, a network in route, or the endpoint network (which all three could be your own if, running locally). I would start by pinging that server ip address and seeing what you come up with.
that problem solved automatically, when I tried to keep connecting. really I don't know what was the problem..thanks for ur reply guys.
