Caching with Kotlin Exposed? - kotlin-exposed

I'm wondering how to add caching when using the Kotlin-Exposed library for SQL access.
For experimentation I've written a small application using both Spring Boot + Hibernate, and KTOR + Exposed.
I did some load-testing and when POSTing to both versions of the application, performance is quite similar with the KTOR + Exposed version having the edge.
However when GETting an existing record from both versions the difference is shocking especially when the database is getting larger - and all time is in Postgres.
My conclusion is that the difference can only be in Hibernate second-level caching that Spring Boot configures.
Seeing the value of caching for items that are repeatedly queried in multiple transactions / sessions, I'm wondering how to configure this in into the low level Exposed framework?

At the moment Exposed supports only per-transaction level.
Also, there are ImmutableCachedEntityClass which allows you to define some entities (mostly dictionary-like) as cached and share them among application.
You have to manage cache invalidation manually with expireCache() function or actualize entities with forceUpdateEntity.
Proper caching in the age of distributed systems is not so easy to implement. You may use any caching library (e.g. caffeine) and invalidate a cache if you know when your data changes (maybe with help of Exposed StatementInterceptors).
If you'll be able to implement a good caching solution feel free to send PR to the project.

Is Redis cache effective for simple windows application(management software)?

I want to implement caching on a simple desktop application. And I am using WPF .NET Framework. So, is Redis cache could be effective considering the portability? Or is there any best option available?
If you need a cache for a simple solution, I suggest you use the InMemory cache. But if you are making a complex solution you should definitely consider a Distributed Cache (e.g. Distributed Redis Cache
), and the reason is that Distributed Cache is:
Is coherent (consistent) across requests to multiple servers.
Survives server restarts and app deployments. And that's because your cache is
usually in a different location (e.g. Azure)
Doesn't use local memory.

I don't suggest using Redis cache for the WPF desktop app. Why? it makes your application depends on a third-party app. it seems in .Net there is a solution for caching in-memory and persisting on a file. You can find more about it on this LINK
Memurai could be an option. It is a native Windows port of Redis.

Does ATK4 have caching support?

I've gone through the documentation on ATK4, trying to find a reference point how to handle caching - partial or full page.
Seems like there is no entry on the matter. Strange from a framework that is built for scalability. Is there a way to cache DB queries, pages, views, etc?

In my opinion, scalability and caching are two different topics and can be addressed separately. Framework approaches scalability by optimising queries and minimising load for each request and also designing approach where multiple nodes can be used to seamlessly scale your application horizontally. There is also an option to add reverse proxy to cache pages before they even hit the web server.
Agile Toolkit has support for two types of caching:
View-level caching
As you read documentation on object render trees - framework initialise and render recursively, so if you add "caching" support to a Page level, you will be able to intercept and retrieve it's contents from cache. You can also cache views.

Model level caching
Sometimes you would want to cache your model data, so instead of retrieving data from the slow database, you can quickly fetch the data from a faster source. Agile Toolkit has support for multiple model data sources, where a cache would be queried first and refreshed if it didn't contain the data. How to design/develop an integration layer or bus for different external services/apps

We are currently looking into replacing one of our apps with possibly an ESB or some similar tool and was looking for some insights into how best to approach this.
We currently have a stand alone service that consumes/interact with different external services and data sources, some delivered through SOAP Web Services and others we just use a DB connection. This service is exposed through SOAP and we have other apps that consume this service but are very tightly coupled to it, now we also have other apps that need to consume some of the external services and would like to replace this all together with an ESB or some sort of SOA platform.
What would be the best way to replace this 'external' services integration layer with an ESB? We were thinking of having a 'global' contract/API in which all of the services we consume are exposed as one single contract where all the possible operations and data structures that we use are exposed under one single namespace, would this be the best way of approaching this? and if so are there any tools that could help us automate this process or do we basically have to handcraft this contract/API?. This would also mean that for any changes to the underlying services/API's we will have to update this new API as well.
If not then the other option I see is to basically use the 'ESB' as a 'proxy' layer in which all of our sources are exposed as they are, so we would end up with several different 'contracts' / API endpoints, but I don't really see the value in this.
Also given the above what would be the best tool for the job? is a full blown ESB an overkill or are we much better rolling our own using something like Apache Camel or Spring Integration?.
A few more details:
We are currently integrating over 5 different external services with more to come in the future.
Only a couple of apps consuming our current app at the moment but several other apps/systems in the future will need to consume some of these external services.
We are currently using a single method of communication (SOAP) between these services but some apps might use pub/sub messaging in the future, although SOAP will still be the main protocol used.
I am new to ESB integration so I apologize in advance if I'm misunderstanding a lot of these technologies and the problems they are meant to solve.
Any help/tips/pointers will be greatly appreciated.

You need to put in some design thoughts of what you want to achieve over time.
There are multiple benefits and potential pitfalls with an ESB introduction.
Here are some typical benefits/use cases
When your applications are hard to change or have very different release cycles - then it's convenient to have an ESB in the middle that can adopt the changes quickly. This is very much the case when your organization buys a lot of COTS products and cloud services that might come with an update the next day that breaks the current API.
When you need to adapt data from one master data system to several other systems and they might not support the same interfaces, i.e. CRM system might want data imported via web services as soon as it's available, ERP want data through db/staging tables and production system wants data every weekend in a flat file delivered via FTP. To keep the master data system clean and easy to maintain, just implement one single integration service in the master data system, and adapt this interface to the various other applications within the ESB plattform instead.
Aggregation or splitting of data from various sources to protect your sensitive systems might be a use case. Say that you have an old system that can take a small updates of information at a time and it's not worth to upgrade this system - then an integration solution that can do aggreggation or splitting or throttling can be a good solution.
Other benefits and use cases include the ability to track and wire tap every message passing between systems - which can even be used together with business intelligence tools to gather KPI:s.
A conceptual ESB can also introduce a canonical message format that is used for all services that needs to communicate. If a lot of applications share the same data with several other applications (not only point to point) - then the benefits of a canonical message format can outweight the cost (which is/can be high). An ESB server might be useful to deal with canonical data as it is usually very good at mapping from one format to another.
However, introducing an ESB without a plan what benefits you are trying to achieve is not really a good thing, since it introduces overhead - you need another server to keep alive, you need perhaps another team to understand all data flows. You need particular knowledge with your integration product. Finally, you need to be able to have some governance around it so that your ESB initiative does not drift away from the goals/benefits you have foreseen.
You should choose some technology that you are comfortable with - or think you can be comfortable with. Apache Camel is indeed very powerful and my favorite integration engine - but it's not an ESB as it does not come with a runtime that you can use to deploy/manage/monitor your integration services with. You can use it together with most Java EE application servers or even better - Apache ServiceMix (= Karaf+Camel+ActiveMQ+CXF) which is built for this task.
The same goes with spring integration - you need to run it somewhere, app servers or what not.
There is a large set of different products, both open source and commercial that does these things.

Pluggable database interface

I am working on a project where we are scoping out the specs for an interface to the backend systems of multiple wholesalers. Here is what we are working with,
Each wholesaler has multiple products, upwards of 10,000. And each wholesaler has customized prices for their products.
The list of wholesalers being accessed will keep growing in the future, so potentially 1000s of wholesalers could be accessed by the system.
Wholesalers are geographically dispersed.
The interface to this system will allow the user to select the wholesaler they wish and browse their products.
Product price updates should be reflected on the site in real time. So, if the wholesaler updates the price it should immediately be available on the site.
System should be database agnostic.
The system should be easy to setup on the wholesalers end, and be minimally intrusive in their daily activities.
Initially, I thought about creating databases for each wholesaler on our end, but with potentially 1000s of wholesalers in the future, is this the best option as far as performance and storage.
Would it be better to query the wholesalers database directly instead of storing their data locally? Can we do this and still remain database agnostic?
What would be best technology stack for such an implementation? I need some kind of ORM tool.
Java based frameworks and technologies preferred.

If you want to create a software that can switch the database I would suggest to use Hibernate (or NHibernate if you use .Net).
Hibernate is an ORM which is not dependent to a specific database and this allows you to switch the DB very easy. It is already proven in large applications and well integrated in the Spring framework (but can be used without Spring framework, too). (Spring.net is the equivalent if using .Net)
Spring is a good technology stack to build large scalable applications (contains IoC-Container, Database access layer, transaction management, supports AOP and much more).

This depends on the availability and latency for accessing remote data. Databases itself have several posibilities to keep them in sync through multiple server instances. Ask yourself what should/would happen if a wholesaler database goes (partly) offline. Maybe not all data needs to be duplicated.

"Best" depends on your requirements. I like Spring. If you go with .Net the built-in ADO.NET Entity Framework might be fit, too.

To CouchDB or not to?

Note: (I have investigated CouchDB for sometime and need some actual experiences).
I have an Oracle database for a fleet tracking service and some status here are:
100 GB db
Huge insertion/sec (our received messages)
Reliable replication (via Oracle streams on 4 servers)
Heavy complex queries.
Now the question: Can CouchDB be used in this case?
Note: Why I thought of CouchDB?
I have read about it's ability to scale horizontally very well. That's very important in our case.
Since it's schema free we can handle changes more properly since we have a lot of changes in different tables and stored procedures.

I need transactions too. But I can tolerate other solutions too. And If there is a little delay in replication, that would be no problem IF it is guaranteed.
You are enjoying the following features with your database:
Using it in production
The data is naturally relational (related to itself)
Huge insertion rate (no MVCC concerns)
Complex queries
Transactions
These are all reasons not to switch to CouchDB.
Of course, the story is not so simple. I think you have discovered what many people never learn: complex problems require complex solutions. We cannot simply replace our database and take the rest of the month off. Sure, CouchDB (and BigCouch) supports excellent horizontal scaling (and cross-datacenter replication too!) but the cost will be rewriting a production application. That is not right.
So, where can CouchDB benefit you?
I suggest that you begin augmenting your application with CouchDB applications. Deploy CouchDB, import your data into it, and build non mission-critical applications. See where it fits best.
For your project, these are the key CouchDB strengths:
It is a small, simple tool—easy for you to set up on a workstation or server
It is a web server. It integrates very well with your infrastructure and security policies.
For example, if you have a flexible policy, just set it up on your LAN
If you have a strict network and firewall policy, you can set it up behind a VPN, or with your SSL certificates
With that step done, it is very easy to access now. Just make http or http requests. Whether you are importing data from Oracle with a custom tool, or using your web browser, it's all the same.
Yes! CouchDB is an app server too! It has a built-in administrative app, to explore data, change the config, etc. (like a built-in phpmyadmin). But for you, the value will be building admin applications and reports as simple, traditional HTML/Javascript/CSS applications. You can get as fancy or as simple as you like.
As your project grows and becomes valuable, you are in a great position to grow, using replication
Either expand the core with larger CouchDB clusters
Or, replicate your data and applications into different data centers, or onto individual workstations, or mobile phones, etc. (The strategy will be more obvious when the time comes.)
CouchDB gives you a simple web server and web site. It gives you a built-in web services API to your data. It makes it easy to build web apps. Therefore, CouchDB seems ideal for extending your core application, not replacing it.

I think CouchDB suits especially well fleet tracking use case, due to their distributed nature. Moreover, the unreliable nature of gprs connections used for transmitting position data, makes the offline-first paradygm of couchapps the perfect partner for your application.
For uploading data from truck, Insertion-rate can take a huge advantage from couchdb replication and bulk inserts, especially if performed on ssd-based couchdb hosting.
For downloading data to truck, couchdb provides filtered replication, allowing each truck to download only the data it really needs, instead of the whole database.
Regarding complex queries, NoSQL database are more flexible and can perform much faster than relation databases.. It's only a matter of structuring and querying your data reasonably.
