SQL Server database backup restore on lower version
(13 answers)
Closed 4 years ago.
I am currently using Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (Version: 11.0.2100.60). When I restore backup file from the client database, I get this message:
When I search google for version 12.00.2269, there is no for such kind of version (maybe I am not found).
Please let me know where can I download for that version and after upgrading, it can still restore the database from the backup file 12.00.2269 to 11.0.2100.60?

Here is my SQL server info:

Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 6.1.7601.17514
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 9.11.9600.19035
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0.30319.42000
Operating System 6.1.7601
Here is my Client's SQL server info :
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 11.0.2100.60
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 6.1.7601.17514
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 4.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 9.11.9600.18837
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0.30319.42000
Operating System 6.1.7601
Only different things is Internet Explorer Version and MSXML version.I have no idea why error message shows the version is higher than us.
Sql server doesn't have the backward compatibility feature for database restoring function,
It is not possible to downgrade a database. 11.0.2100.60 is the SQL Server 2012 version. There is absolutely no way you can restore or attach this database to the SQL Server 2014 instance you are trying to restore on (11.0.2100.60 is SQL Server 2012). Your only options are:
Upgrade this instance to SQL Server 2014 (12.00.2269)
Restore the backup you have on a SQL Server 2012 instance, export all the data and import it on a SQL Server 2014 database.

I have an SQL Azure database and connect to it in SQL Server Management Studio. I do Export Data Tier Application and then Import Data Tier Application for the .bacpac file to get it into my localdb. Or I use Tasks - Deploy Database.
Either way, it worked up until recently and now I get an error
Online index operations can only be performed in Enterprise edition of SQL Server
I am using SQL Server Management Studio versions below (from Help - About). Any ideas?

SQL Server Management Objects (SMO) 16.100.46041.41
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 15.0.19342.0
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 10.0.19041.1
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 6.0

Among bug fixes in SSMS 18.9:
Fixed in issue where importing a bacpac into SQL Express may fail. See SQL Server user feedback.
This issue with SSMS 18.8 had been acknowledge by the product team, but was fixed:
I apologize for the inconvenience of this issue, we are working to include a fix in the next release of SSMS. In the meantime, installing SSMS 18.7.1 (https://learn.microsoft.com/sql/ssms/release-notes-ssms?view=sql-server-ver15#1871) will allow you to complete the bacpac import operations on SQL Server Express.
If instead of using localdb you can upgrade to or use SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition, then you won't have any issues. Developer Edition is free and has the same features as Enterprise Edition. You can download Developer Edition from here and then update it with the latest cumulative update from here, after that try to import the bacpac to the Developer Edition instance.
I just ran into this same exact problem again today. I exported our database from Azure into a BACPAC and was having trouble with SSMS loading it into SQL Express.
Just by pure luck, I found SSMS 18.9 was released today and appears to have fixed the issue in my case.
Current SQL Server:
SQL Server 2016 Express SP1
Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (SP1-CU7-GDR) (KB4057119) - 13.0.4466.4 (X64)

Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Express Edition (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro 10.0 <X64> (Build 15063: )
Downloaded Cumulative Update 1 and went through the installation steps
Downloaded Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
Database Mail still does not show. Suggestions?
Of note, when I click on the download file for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, it doesn't do anything even when trying to run as an Administrator.
Thank you!

In SQL server standard and enterprise edition,A DataBase mail functionality in built to sent mail. But in SQL Server express edition,You need either use CLR integration or configure SQL Mail using MSDB system database.

You can make use of CLR Integration for sending email from SQL Server Express.

While restoring database I got this error
SQL Server cannot load database 'XXX' because Change Data Capture is enabled. The currently installed edition of SQL Server does not support Change Data Capture. Either disable Change Data Capture in the database by using a supported edition of SQL Server, or upgrade the instance to one that supports Change Data Capture.

I know there is no feature of CDC in Express Edition but i got XXX.bak file which i need to restore on my sql server. Is there any way of script to remove CDC feature from the file?
I have SQL Server 2008 and the Management Studio installed on my machine, but I apparently only have an instance of 2005 running on it.
SQL Server 2008 Mgt Studio Info
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 10.0.2531.0
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 6.0.6002.18005

Microsoft Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.4216
Operating System 6.0.6002
How do I either upgrade that instance to 2008 or create a new instance?
Based on your other post, you should be fine with the express edition (found here).

I use this command on both express and developer addition
select ##VERSION
Express server result is below

Since your version of Express is newer than your version of Developer, you will not be able to migrate directly, but you have a few options, in my order of preference:
Upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition - by far the simplest approach
Use a third party product to replicate schema and then the data (e.g. Red Gate SQL Compare / SQL Data Compare - I blogged about several other options here).
Use a manual script, such as this one from Jonathan Kehayias
Use the import-export wizard from Developer Edition to pull the data/schema from Express
This is the problem of your sql version. You have created database in another version and the version in which you are trying to attach is different and old.
What you can do is create a backup file, and create new empty database and then restore that backup in it.
Note: While restoring, after providing backup file, see on left side, there is "options", click it, and then in there, you must select overwrite option, other wise it will give you structure error that the database backup that you are trying to attach has different structure than the database in which the backup is being restored.
Since SQL Server does not allow downgrading you can create a backup of your database in SQL Server 2008 instance and use third party tools, ApexSQL Diff and ApexSQL Data Diff to restore the backup from an older to a newer version of SQL Server.
You can read detailed explanation of the process in this article:Restoring SQL Server database backup to an older version of SQL Server
Hope this helps
