Is it possible to set a custom value for the service that active directory is providing?
I am having hard time figuring this out as all the research I did on microsoft, oracle, and MIT websites yielded nothing.
Any help is appreciated.
It seems your Kerberos is tied to an Active Directory.
Consider adding a custom attribute in Active Directory instead, for example,

You could get principal name from a Kerberos ticket, then make request to AD to get that custom attribute for that principal. (assuming your custom attributes could be at a principal level)
I don't think you could create custom attributes for the ticket itself.

So... this question is maybe not solely a programming question but I hope one of you can shed some light on my issue:
The base need we have in our software is to query the groups a user is associated too with
LDAP. For this task we actually use parts of LDAP Admin to query the user. Actually we want to query for the UserPrincipalName which at least to my knowledge is the most common way right?
So.. our problem is that the AD is setup such that the user has an UPN like foo#HUS
but the user actually is bound to the domain HUS.adomain.com (aka LDAP base: dc=HUS,dc=adomain,dc=com) and searching using an UPN like foo#HUS.adomain.com does not work - only foo#HUS works. So... the question is:
Is this common?
And is there a name/resource for that?
(sorry I'm quite new to that all...)
The goal would be to use as less parameters in the administration tool as possible
aka only the base (and form from the base the UPN username).
Update: I found at least one resource (in German) that states that this is possible but not recommended by Microsoft for Azure AD. (aka having a different mail address than UPN )
When you initiate a LDAP search using a UPN like foo#HUS.adomain.com it wont work because this value is not present in the userPrincipalName value. When you search for a user by building its UPN using all the domain suffix available in the forest, then you would not consider searching the userPrincipalName attribute.
It is very difficult to build every constructed attribute from base for querying because every Active directory environment would be different. As you have mentioned that you would like to build the attribute from base, it may work if this is the only AD infra that you are targeting. Every AD infra would have its own ways in which it will be setup.
However if you would want your tool to work in any AD environment you would have to consider some other parameters.
UPN is a editable attribute . An organization can set it up or can create a user without a UPN value. Below is example of user created programmatically by using old ADSI libraries. You can repro the same by removing any users userprincipalName attribute value and the user logon account name as shown in the pictures below.
UPN is an optional attribute and a user account can be present in AD without it as well. Coming back to your specific environment in this environment only foo#HUS works because "HUS" might be setup as a valid domain suffix within the Active directory. You can check this by opening the domain.msc console on any domain controller or a machine with Remote Server Administration Tools installed. You would find the UPN suffix as shown below . I changed it in my environment as shown below.
The value you will add will now show up in the . If you remove HUS from here for example any existing user who have user#HUS userPrincipalName populated will get removed because this is a optional constructed attribute in AD. And you will have to setup this for all the users in the environment . For example check below after I changed the username to dh # HUS .
The userprincipalName value also got populated with the same.

I'm currently using mod_authnz_ldap to enable HTTP Basic Authentication against Active Directory for a VirtualHost. Based on the documentation it is recommended to set a user and password to enable the resolving of user DNs for the bind.
However AD offers methods to bind users without using a separate account for searching the directory in front. E.g. you can suffix a username with the Domain like that: username#domain and AD resolves the DN behind the scenes.
As I don't want to create accounts for my web servers I'm curious if there is a way to configure Apache2 using mod_authnz_ldap or another module to bind against AD without using an search account.
You can take advantage of the supported Active Directory object name forms for a simple bind, and skip the search for a user's DN by using directive AuthLDAPInitialBindAsUser with module mod_authnz_ldap.
I have an Azure Active Directory (AAD) set up in my Azure subscription associated with an email address of mine, which we'll call A.
Some time later, I updated my Microsoft Account to use a new email address B as the primary email address, with A being associated with it still so it can still be used and the two email addresses treated as being one.
In AAD there is one user, whose user Id is A which appears not to be able to be changed as it is greyed-out. Attempting to add B fails with the error: You cannot add yourself.
Is there a way I can force the user name of the AAD user to be B instead of A?
The reason I ask is because I am trying to setup an Azure Key Vault in my subscription as it appears to be failing because whether or not I sign in as A or B in Azure Powershell, I am always signed in as B. This then causes this error message, which I appear to be unable to work around:
New-AzureKeyVault : Cannot find the Active Directory object 'B' in tenant
'{Tenant Id}'. Please make sure that the user or application service principal you are
authorizing is registered in the current subscription's Azure Active directory. The TenantID displayed by the cmdlet
'get-AzureSubscription -current' is the current subscription's Azure Active directory.
Can you check that you are using the latest bits for Key Vault PowerShell?
I talked with some folks internally and we believe that an experience like this may be expected if you are using an older version of the PowerShell CMDLETs, but the lastest version should be update to date and not run into the issue you are having.
If you find that you still hit this issue after upgrading, we may have a bug on our side that we should fix.
In that case, my suggestion is for you to create a new Admin User. Then delete the old Admin Account (you may need to Transfer Onwership of your AAD Subscription to the new Admin), and then recreate your account, which will pull the lastest information from that user.
However, I only reccommend trying this after having updated the PowerShell bits.
Please let us know if either of these methods resolves your issues.

I use Exchange 2003 and I have been searching a lot and found related queries like
(&(UserAccountControl:1.2.840.113556.1.4.803:=2)(msExchHomeServerName=*)(objectClass=User))
Which enumerates disabled user accounts with mailboxes, but what I want is quite the opposite, user accounts (enabled or disabled) with CLOSED mailboxes. Thanks beforehand for any help!
Exchange and Active Directory are separate, if user is created on AD doesn’t mean that it will have mailbox account too but usually both are used together.
You can use any LDAP browser like JXplorer or LDAPadmin to check the settings for your users on Active Directory. You will find disabled users on AD moved to different OU or there should be some attribute which will differentiate it from active users.
You can export LDIF file (by LDAP browser like LDAPadmin) for one active user and one disabled user and compare both to find relevant attribute for disabled entity and use it for your query filter. You can consult your IT team also who is managing Active directory for more details. HTH :)
I am trying to add a user to Active Directory through an MPS Web Service. I've been trying a long time to find the correct LDAP-url to use to tell it to add the new user to the Users group. I've tried things like:
LDAP://XXXX.YYY/OU=Users,DC=XXXX,DC=YYY
LDAP://XXXX.YYY/CN=Users,DC=XXXX,DC=YYY
LDAP://XXXX.YYY/DN=Users,DC=XXXX,DC=YYY
It seems the "farthest" I've gotten is an error that says I have given it an invalid Customer.
I really don't have a lot of experience with LDAP (pretty much none at all), so even just a good LDAP and Active Directory tutorial would be extremely useful (even that is eluding me right now). Thanks!
I've since lookup up the actual distinguished name in ADSI Edit, which was LDAP://XXXX.YYY/CN=Users,DC=XXXX,DC=YYY, but still have no luck.
You have error in your LDAP string.
Let's have examle:
user with account name User1 in organization unit Office1 where contoso.com is domain.
Object:
contoso.com/Users/Office1/User1
LDAP Path is:
LDAP://CN=User1,OU=Office1,OU=Users,DC=contoso,DC=com
Note that there is no slash in path itself
CN = Common Name
OU = Organizational Unit
DC = Domain Component

if your domain is xxxx.yyyy.zzzz and you are search for all users; your path is:
LDAP://CN=Users,DC=xxxx,DC=yyyy,DC=zzzz
means every dot in domain replace with dc=
More directly, the default Users container (not a group) in a default Active Directory install would be CN=Users,dc=domain,dc=com
You are not clear if you are having trouble adding a user to a group, or if you are having trouble creating a user in a specific location.
