I also tried using different server names but i haven't had much luck with that.
Maybe i need to install some additional software?
Please Install SQL Server.

I am very naive to Microsoft SQL Server and SQL in general so excuse my ignorance.
We have this Microsoft SQL Server where we store our data from monitoring software. I need to run some queries and need to take a look at some data. Is there any way I don't have to remote into SQL Server to run these select queries?
Some sort of portal or light software I can download which connects to SQL Server and lets me do this.
Thanks in advance.
Use the SQL Server Management Studio. It can be downloaded separately.

All you need is SQL Management Studio. You can download it using this link: SQL Server 2014 Express. Please be sure to check the details to know the packages to select. Make sure to get the management studio checked.
If you need help using the management studio, this can help you: SQL Management Studio Tutorial
I've installed Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Studio today and now I'm trying to connect to server. As far as I know there should be default local server that would allow me to create a database in it. Unfortunately, my list of servers is empty and I cannot connect to anything. I've read tutorials and tried everything, even reinstalling all the Microsoft SQL Package. How can I fix this problem and find/create my local server?
Ok, I've read that there might be a problem with connecting to database even if whole microsoft package gives me LocalDB. I had to install Visual Studio, then clicked View -> SQL Server Project Explorer. Right click at 'SQL Server', I added new database and then entered its name. Now I can connect with my own server by typing '(localdb)\v11.0' in management studio.
I have SQL Server 2014 Management Studio. I'd like to create my own database, but I don't have any local server.
Can you guys help me create a local server?
Run SQL server installation again and while installing it will give you options to install features. Choose Only SQL Server as all other components you already have
I freshly installed Microsoft SQL Server on my machine and started it. When I try to connect to a server I use a . for the server name (which should point to the local machine from what I read?). However I get the following error:
So I went to the SQL Server Configuration Manager and checked under SQL Server Services, which seems to be empty.
How can I establish a connection?
Your services are not running.
Make sure you installed this.
The above answer was correct, however, you only installed the SQL Server Management Studio.
If you installed Express, downloaded from the Microsoft website you might want to download and create the server instance with the management studio. You will need to select if you want Windows authentication or SQL Server authentication using a username and password. Remember to add the current windows user for using either.
Here is SQL Server 2014 Express: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/dn434042.aspx.
This will download everything you need to connect to a server.
Please let me know if you need more information.
Getting an error in SQL Server 2000 Enterprise manager - Please see in the attached screenshot!
Kindly help how to overcome the issue
You have to install the backward compatibility package. You can download it from here. The file is called SQLServer2005_BCxxx.msi
You're trying to access a SQL Server 2005 instance using SQL Server 2000's Enterprise Manager, which isn't possible.
You need to install a copy of SQL Server Management Studio - the 2008 R2Express version should be fine, or you can dig out the 2005 version
