A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

Product Update:
Product Update has successfully applied KB 3058865 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=3058865. These updates have set the patch level of the Setup operation to 12.1.4100.0.
I have totally removed SQL Server from the registry, raised the user to an admin,
raised folder rights to full access in Users\default and in all users concerned with SQL Server.
Does anyone have any ideas?

I have installed SQL Server 2012 Express version where I have a local db instance separately. When I connect to SQL Server Express, it connected without problem, but when I try to connect to local db, I get the following error:
The attempt to attach to the database failed with the following information: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The system cannot find the file specified.
When I open SQL Server Configuration Manager, the local db service is not running but it is stopped. When I start that it shows error
The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details
When I open its properties and select log on as built in with local system after clicking apply it shows error

I have read this thread, however unfortunately couldn't find the solution to my problem. I have an ASP.Net Core project (that's called Rent) and it works without any problem on my local machine. However, once I publish the project to the IIS (still in development mode) I get the below error
fail: Rent.Program[0]An error occured during migration
Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception (0x89C50118): Unknown error (0x89c50118)
The connection string is called DefaultConnection and is the environment variable. Can anyone help me please? Can provide any additional information if required.
The first thing you should check is that your SQL Server instance is up and running and that your database is still available. This error means quite literally that it can't establish a connection to SQL Server from the Secret Server application.
And you can also check follow things in your environment:
Is something blocking the connection between your Secret Server server and SQL Server?
The standard SQL port is 1433. Check with your server administrator - is the Windows Firewall in use, blocking this port on your SQL server? Check with your network administrator - is there a firewall at some point in between that has closed off this port? Keep in mind that if you use a custom port for SQL, it need to be specified the Secret Server database connection using a SQLSERVER,port type of format.
On the server hosting your SQL Server database, is the SQL Server
service running?
Open services.msc or SQL Configuration Manager to view the status of your SQL Server service.
I am trying to build a project data base SQL in my web application project (visual studio) I tried to off the firewall and I got this:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 50 - Local Database Runtime error occurred. Cannot create an automatic instance. See the Windows Application event log for error details.
If you are using SQL Server, then do the following:
Search for "Services" in Cortona
Open the "Services" app
Scroll down to "SQL Server(MSSQLSEERVER)"
Now go to its properties and start the service
Also, make sure you are using the correct connection string.
I recently install SQL server 2014 in my PC and I selected SQL authentication rather than Windows authentication after completion of installation when I tried to log in my server it shows this error even my server name and password was correct even though it shows this what to do now!!
following is the error message shows when I try to log in.....
TITLE: Connect to Server

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)

The network path was not found
As the error states "network-related or instance-specific error" its related not being able to find the instance.
This maybe due wrong instance name, Check the spellings of the server that you are connecting to.
You may have installed a named instance like sqlexpress in that case the server name should be {YourServer}\Sqlexpress.
You can get your instance name by going to services, if its MSSQLSERVER you can connect with the machine name else you should provide the correct instance name.
Please refer the screenshot below.
If you are connecting to another machine check the network configuration of the instance by going to sql server configuration manager. If the status is disabled you can connect from outside.
If that also fails better check the firewall settings
I am having issues connected with SQL 2016 MSSQLLocalDb from my application. The system is a Server 2012 and I have just deployed my web application to it. I have installed SQLLocaldb 2016.
Running
sqllocaldb info
gave this response: The automatic instance MSSQLLocalDB was not created.
So I created the instance with the name MSSQLLocalDB.
But when I run the application I get this error:
Using:
Data Source=(localdb)\MSSQLLocalDB
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a
connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible.
Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to
allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 50 - Local
Database Runtime error occurred. Cannot create an automatic instance. See the
Windows Application event log for error details.
)
Changing Data source to named pipe gives this error:
Data Source=np:\.\pipe\LOCALDB#7A55F963\tsql\query
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing
a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible.
Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to
allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error
Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Hear is a screen shot of SQL Server Management Studio (un-able to connect as well)
Can someone please help?
I can't open configuration manager either, when I try I get this error.
Try browse: Server name -> Brose for more -> Database Engine.
