I am working with Sql-Server 2008.
I have a table (MyTable) which contains two columns: IDCustomer and PhoneNumber. Some of the IDCustomers do not have a PhoneNumber, i.e. the corresponding PhoneNumber entry is blank (PhoneNumber is a varchar variable).
Here I give the first entries of my Table:
IDCUstomer PhoneNumber
22
13 911
10 118
8
17 112
.... ....
I am evaluating how many times every distinct Phone Number appears using this statement:
select
PhoneNumer,
RN = ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY PhoneNumber ORDER BY PhoneNumber ASC)
FROM MyTable
I am intentionally not using
select PhoneNumber,
count(PhoneNumber)
from MyTable
group by PhoneNumber
because in order to achieve my final result (which is not the topic of the question) I need to use the former expression.
My question is on the result obtained using the former expression (the one with the partition by). In fact, I would expect this result:
PhoneNumber RN
2
112 1
118 1
911 1
because I know I will obtain it using the query with the group by.
But instead I get:
PhoneNumber RN
1
2
112 1
118 1
911 1
so it looks like the blank rows are separately and progressively counted. I have checked that the same happens with more than two blank entries. For istance, if I have ten blank PhoneNumbers the result of the first query is: ten blank entries in the first column and RN growing from 1 to 10 in the second column.
Hence, I would like to ask you if you know why the results are not the ones I was expecting. Am I not obtaining the expected results since I am missing something or making any mistake?
Thank you in advance.
Try This it may helps you
;WITH cte(IDCUstomer,PhoneNumber)
AS
(
SELECT 22, NULL UNION ALL
SELECT 13, 911 UNION ALL
SELECT 10, 118 UNION ALL
SELECT 8, NULL UNION ALL
SELECT 17, 112
)
SELECT ISNULL(CAST(PhoneNumber AS VARCHAR(10)), '') AS PhoneNumber
,RN
FROM (
SELECT PhoneNumber
,RN = ROW_NUMBER() OVER (
PARTITION BY PhoneNumber ORDER BY IDCUstomer DESC
)
,ROW_NUMBER() OVER (
ORDER BY (
SELECT NULL
)
) - 1 AS Seq
FROM cte
) DT
WHERE dt.Seq > 0
Result
PhoneNumber RN
2
112 1
118 1
911 1
If you need to stick with partitions instead of GROUP BY then you will need to change ROW_NUMBER to COUNT(IDCUSTOMER) OVER (PARTITION BY PhoneNumber)
As explained int he comments...
declare #table table (IDCUstomer int, Phonenumber varchar(8))
insert into #table
values
(1,' '),
(2,' '),
(3,'123'),
(4,'456')
select
Phonenumber,
ROW_NUMBER() over (partition by Phonenumber order by Phonenumber) as RN
from #table
group by Phonenumber
If you have NULL values in the data you can use this
declare #table table (IDCUstomer int, Phonenumber varchar(8))
insert into #table
values
(1,' '),
(2,' '),
(3,'123'),
(4,'456'),
(5,NULL)
select
Phonenumber,
ROW_NUMBER() over (partition by Phonenumber order by Phonenumber) as RN
from
(select isnull(Phonenumber,'') as Phonenumber from #table) x
group by Phonenumber

Given the following table structure

id

1

2

1/13/2021
3
Bob
1/12/2021

6

I need SQL that will page over the data based on datecreated. The query should return the top 3 records, and any record which also shares the datecreated of the top 3.
So give the data above, we should get back Joe, Fred and Bob (as the top 3 records) plus Sue since sue has the same date as Bob.
Is there something like ROW_NUMBER that increments for each row where it encounters a different value.
For some context this query is being used to generate an agenda type view, and once we select any date we want to keep all data for that date together.
EDIT
I do have a solution but it smells:
;WITH CTE AS ( SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY DateCreated DESC) RowNum,CAST(DateCreated AS DATE) DateCreated,Name
FROM MyTable),
PAGE AS (SELECT *
FROM CTE
WHERE RowNum<=5)
SELECT *
FROM Page
UNION
SELECT *
FROM CTE
WHERE DateCreated=(SELECT MIN(DateCreated) FROM Page)
I've used a TOP 3 WITH TIES example and a ROW_NUMBER example and a CTE to return four records:
DROP TABLE IF EXISTS #tmp
GO
CREATE TABLE #tmp (
Id INT PRIMARY KEY,
name VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
dateCreated DATE
)
GO
INSERT INTO #tmp VALUES
( 1, 'Joe', '13 Jan 2021' ),
( 2, 'Fred', '13 Jan 2021' ),
( 3, 'Bob', '12 Jan 2021' ),
( 4, 'Sue', '12 Jan 2021' ),
( 5, 'Sally', '10 Jan 2021' ),
( 6, 'Alex', '9 Jan 2021' )
GO
-- Gets same result
SELECT TOP 3 WITH TIES *
FROM #tmp t
ORDER BY dateCreated DESC
;WITH cte AS (
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER( ORDER BY dateCreated DESC ) rn, *
FROM #tmp
)
SELECT *
FROM #tmp t
WHERE EXISTS
(
SELECT *
FROM cte c
WHERE rn <=3
AND t.dateCreated = c.dateCreated
)
My results:
As #Charlieface, we only need to replace ROW_NUMBER with DENSE_RANK. So that the ROW_NUMBER will be tied according to the same value.
When we run the query:
SELECT DENSE_RANK () OVER(ORDER BY DateCreated DESC) RowNum,CAST(DateCreated AS DATE) DateCreated,Name
FROM MyTable
The result will show as follows:
So as a result, we can set RowNum<=3 in the query to get the top 3:
;WITH CTE AS ( SELECT DENSE_RANK() OVER(ORDER BY DateCreated DESC) RowNum,CAST(DateCreated AS DATE) DateCreated,Name
FROM MyTable),
PAGE AS (SELECT *
FROM CTE
WHERE RowNum<=3)
SELECT *
FROM Page
UNION
SELECT *
FROM CTE
WHERE DateCreated=(SELECT MIN(DateCreated) FROM Page)
The First one is as yours the second one is as above. The results of the two queries are the same.
Kindly let us know if you need more infomation.
I have this:
SELECT NEWID() as id,
'OwnerReassign' as name,
1 as TypeId,
'MyOrganisation' as OrgName,
'07DA8E53-74BD-459C-AF94-A037897A51E3' as SystemUserId,
0 as StatusId,
GETDATE() as CreatedAt,
'{"EntityName":"account","Ids":["'+CAST(AccountId as varchar(50))+'"],"OwnerId":"0C01C994-1205-E511-988E-26EE4189191B"}' as [Parameters]
FROM Account
WHERE OwnerIdName IN ('John Smith') AND New_AccountType = 1
Within the parameter field is an id (0C01C994-1205-E511-988E-26EE4189191B). Is it possible it could sequentially assign a different id from a list for each row? There are 5 id's in total.
What i'm trying to get to is this result set equally split between the 5 different id's.
Thanks
You can add one more NEWID() in the sub query and handle in the SELECT as below:
SELECT id, [name], TypeId, OrgName, SystemUserId, StatusId, CreatedAt,
'{"EntityName":"account","Ids":["' + AccountId +'"],"OwnerId":"' + ParamId + '"}' as [Parameters]
FROM (
SELECT NEWID() as id,
'OwnerReassign' as name,
1 as TypeId,
'MyOrganisation' as OrgName,
'07DA8E53-74BD-459C-AF94-A037897A51E3' as SystemUserId,
0 as StatusId,
GETDATE() as CreatedAt,
CAST(NEWID() AS VARCHAR (36)) as ParamId,
CAST(AccountId as varchar(50)) as AccountId
FROM Account
WHERE OwnerIdName IN ('John Smith') AND New_AccountType = 1
) A
You can use something like the following. Basically, use a row number for both your IDs and your data table to update, then do a MOD (%) operation with the amount of ID's you want to assign, so your data table to update is split into N groups. Then use that group ID to assign each ID.
IF OBJECT_ID('tempdb..#IDsToAssign') IS NOT NULL

The ordering of the ROW_NUMBER() function will determine how ID's are assigned.
You could potentially do this by using the ROW_NUMBER() field in a subquery; for example:
SELECT NEWID() as id, 'OwnerReassign' as name, 1 as TypeId,
'MyOrganisation' as OrgName,
'07DA8E53-74BD-459C-AF94-A037897A51E3' as SystemUserId,
0 as StatusId, GETDATE() as CreatedAt,
case B / ##ROWCOUNT
when 0 then '0C01C994-1205-E511-988E-26EE4189191B'
when 1 then '12345677-1205-E511-988E-26EE4189191B'
when 2 then '66666666-1205-E511-988E-26EE4189191B'
etc...
end
FROM
(
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY A.Id)
FROM Account A
WHERE OwnerIdName IN ('John Smith') AND New_AccountType = 1
) AS B
If you want the system to pick those values then you could put then in their own temporary table, too.
I have a SQL server database,and there are many duplicate in one(RanjePhoneNumber) column.
I am trying to select rows from a table that have duplicates in RanjePhoneNumber column and they have a same CityId.
My Table:
RanjePhoneNumber ContactId CityId
776323 280739 7
342261 186372 80
468284 75980 7
776323 101969 9
362875 170242 13
224519 164914 7
342261 203606 55
776323 280733 7
342261 203602 80
My expected results:
RanjePhoneNumber ContactId CityId
776323 280739 7
342261 186372 80
776323 280733 7
342261 203602 80
Group by those two columns:
SELECT RanjePhoneNumber, CityID
FROM dbo.TableName
GROUP BY RanjePhoneNumber, CityID
HAVING COUNT(*) > 1
If you want to select all columns you could use a ranking function:
WITH CTE AS
(
SELECT t.*, Cnt = COUNT(*) OVER (PARTITION BY RanjePhoneNumber, CityID)
FROM dbo.TableName
)
SELECT RanjePhoneNumber, ContactId, CityId
FROM CTE
WHERE Cnt > 1
If you don't want to find all rows which belong to this "duplicate-group" but only all but the first, use the ROW_NUMBER approach the other answer has shown.
;with cte
as
(select
Ranjephonenumber,
contactid,
cityid,
row_number() over (partition by Ranjephonenumber,cityid order by cityid) as rn
from table
)
select
Ranjephonenumber,contactid,city from cte where rn>1
I got a situation to display first top 6 records. first 3 records in FirstCol and next 3 in SecondCol. My query is like this:
select top 6 [EmpName]
from [Emp ]
order by [Salary] Desc
Result:
[EmpName]
----------------------
Sam
Pam
Oliver
Jam
Kim
Nixon
But I want the result to look like this:
FirstCol SecondCol
Sam Jam
Pam Kim
Oliver Nixon
; WITH TOP_3 AS
(
select TOP 3 [EmpName]
,ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY [Salary] Desc) rn
from [Emp ]
order by [Salary] Desc
),
Other3 AS
(
SELECT [EmpName]
,ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY [Salary] Desc) rn
FROM Employees
ORDER BY [Salary] DESC OFFSET 3 ROWS FETCH NEXT 3 ROWS ONLY
)
SELECT T3.[EmpName] , O3.[EmpName]
FROM TOP_3 T3 INNER JOIN Other3 O3
ON T3.RN = O3.RN
ORDER BY T3.RN ASC
You can do this using several windowing functions, this is kind of ugly but it will get you the result that you want:
;with data as
(
-- get your Top 6
select top 6 empname, salary
from emp
order by salary desc
),
buckets as
(
-- use NTILE to split the six rows into 2 buckets
select empname,
nt = ntile(2) over(order by salary desc),
salary
from data
)
select
FirstCol = max(case when nt = 1 then empname end),
SecondCol = max(case when nt = 2 then empname end)
from
(
-- create a row number for each item in the buckets to return multiple rows
select empname,
nt,
rn = row_number() over(partition by nt order by salary desc)
from buckets
) d
group by rn;
See SQL Fiddle with Demo. This uses the function NTILE, this takes your dataset of six rows and splits it into two buckets - 3 rows in bucket 1 and 3 rows in bucket 2. The (2) inside the NTILE is used to determine the number of buckets.
Next I used row_number() to create a unique value for each row within each bucket, this allows you to return multiple rows for each column.
I have a problem using RANK() in SQL Server.
Here’s my code:
SELECT contendernum,
totals,
RANK() OVER (PARTITION BY ContenderNum ORDER BY totals ASC) AS xRank
FROM (
SELECT ContenderNum,
SUM(Criteria1+Criteria2+Criteria3+Criteria4) AS totals
FROM Cat1GroupImpersonation
GROUP BY ContenderNum
) AS a
The results for that query are:
contendernum totals xRank
1 196 1
2 181 1
3 192 1
4 181 1
5 179 1
What my desired result is:
contendernum totals xRank
1 196 1
2 181 3
3 192 2
4 181 3
5 179 4
I want to rank the result based on totals. If there are same value like 181, then two numbers will have the same xRank.
Change:
RANK() OVER (PARTITION BY ContenderNum ORDER BY totals ASC) AS xRank
to:
RANK() OVER (ORDER BY totals DESC) AS xRank
Have a look at this example:
SQL Fiddle DEMO
You might also want to have a look at the difference between RANK (Transact-SQL) and DENSE_RANK (Transact-SQL):
RANK (Transact-SQL)
If two or more rows tie for a rank, each tied rows receives the same
rank. For example, if the two top salespeople have the same SalesYTD
value, they are both ranked one. The salesperson with the next highest
SalesYTD is ranked number three, because there are two rows that are
ranked higher. Therefore, the RANK function does not always return
consecutive integers.
DENSE_RANK (Transact-SQL)
Returns the rank of rows within the partition of a result set, without
any gaps in the ranking. The rank of a row is one plus the number of
distinct ranks that come before the row in question.
To answer your question title, "How to use Rank() in SQL Server," this is how it works:
I will use this set of data as an example:
create table #tmp
(
column1 varchar(3),
column2 varchar(5),
column3 datetime,
column4 int
)
insert into #tmp values ('AAA', 'SKA', '2013-02-01 00:00:00', 10)
insert into #tmp values ('AAA', 'SKA', '2013-01-31 00:00:00', 15)
insert into #tmp values ('AAA', 'SKB', '2013-01-31 00:00:00', 20)
insert into #tmp values ('AAA', 'SKB', '2013-01-15 00:00:00', 5)
insert into #tmp values ('AAA', 'SKC', '2013-02-01 00:00:00', 25)
You have a partition which basically specifies grouping.
In this example, if you partition by column2, the rank function will create ranks for groups of column2 values. There will be different ranks for rows where column2 = 'SKA' than rows where column2 = 'SKB' and so on.
The ranks are decided like this:
The rank for every record is one plus the number of ranks that come before it in its partition. The rank will only increment when one of the fields you selected (other than the partitioned field(s)) is different than the ones that come before it. If all of the selected fields are the same, then the ranks will tie and both will be assigned the value, one.
Knowing this, if we only wanted to select one value from each group in column two, we could use this query:
with cte as
(
select *,
rank() over (partition by column2
order by column3) rnk
from t
) select * from cte where rnk = 1 order by column3;
Result:
COLUMN1 | COLUMN2 | COLUMN3 |COLUMN4 | RNK
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AAA | SKB | January, 15 2013 00:00:00+0000 |5 | 1
AAA | SKA | January, 31 2013 00:00:00+0000 |15 | 1
AAA | SKC | February, 01 2013 00:00:00+0000 |25 | 1
SQL DEMO
You have to use DENSE_RANK rather than RANK. The only difference is that it doesn't leave gaps. You also shouldn't partition by contender_num, otherwise you're ranking each contender in a separate group, so each is 1st-ranked in their segregated groups!
SELECT contendernum,totals, DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY totals desc) AS xRank FROM
(
SELECT ContenderNum ,SUM(Criteria1+Criteria2+Criteria3+Criteria4) AS totals
FROM dbo.Cat1GroupImpersonation
GROUP BY ContenderNum
) AS a
order by contendernum
A hint for using StackOverflow, please post DDL and sample data so people can help you using less of their own time!
create table Cat1GroupImpersonation (
contendernum int,
criteria1 int,
criteria2 int,
criteria3 int,
criteria4 int);
insert Cat1GroupImpersonation select
1,196,0,0,0 union all select
2,181,0,0,0 union all select
3,192,0,0,0 union all select
4,181,0,0,0 union all select
5,179,0,0,0;
DENSE_RANK() is a rank with no gaps, i.e. it is “dense”.
select Name,EmailId,salary,DENSE_RANK() over(order by salary asc) from [dbo].[Employees]
RANK()-It contain gap between the rank.
select Name,EmailId,salary,RANK() over(order by salary asc) from [dbo].[Employees]
You have already grouped by ContenderNum, no need to partition again by it.
Use Dense_rank()and order by totals desc.
In short,
SELECT contendernum,totals, **DENSE_RANK()**
OVER (ORDER BY totals **DESC**)
AS xRank
FROM
(
SELECT ContenderNum ,SUM(Criteria1+Criteria2+Criteria3+Criteria4) AS totals
FROM dbo.Cat1GroupImpersonation
GROUP BY ContenderNum
) AS a
SELECT contendernum,totals, RANK() OVER (ORDER BY totals ASC) AS xRank FROM
(
SELECT ContenderNum ,SUM(Criteria1+Criteria2+Criteria3+Criteria4) AS totals
FROM dbo.Cat1GroupImpersonation
GROUP BY ContenderNum
) AS a
RANK() is good, but it assigns the same rank for equal or similar values. And if you need unique rank, then ROW_NUMBER() solves this problem
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY totals DESC) AS xRank
Select T.Tamil, T.English, T.Maths, T.Total, Dense_Rank()Over(Order by T.Total Desc) as Std_Rank From (select Tamil,English,Maths,(Tamil+English+Maths) as Total From Student) as T
