Additional HtmlWebpackPlugin() pages with create-react-app - reactjs

I've ejected from the default create-react-app project and am attempting to create a second, maintenance.html page that Webpack can inject into as it does by default with public/index.html. I've read through a number of issues; and the docs for HtmlWebpackPlugin, which states it should be as easy as:
// Makes some environment variables available in index.html.
// The public URL is available as %PUBLIC_URL% in index.html, e.g.:
// <link rel="shortcut icon" href="%PUBLIC_URL%/favicon.ico">
// In development, this will be an empty string.
new InterpolateHtmlPlugin(envObject),
// Generates an `index.html` file with the <script> injected.
new HtmlWebpackPlugin({
inject: true,
template: paths.appHtml,
minify: {
minifyCSS: true,
},
}),
to this:
// Makes some environment variables available in index.html.
// The public URL is available as %PUBLIC_URL% in index.html, e.g.:
// <link rel="shortcut icon" href="%PUBLIC_URL%/favicon.ico">
// In development, this will be an empty string.
new InterpolateHtmlPlugin(envObject),
// Generates an `index.html` file with the <script> injected.
new HtmlWebpackPlugin({
inject: true,
template: paths.appHtml,
minify: {
minifyCSS: true,
},
}),
new HtmlWebpackPlugin({
inject: true,
template: paths.appHtml,
filename: '/public/maintenance.html',
minify: {
minifyCSS: true,
},
}),
I keep getting the following error when I want to convert vars like %PUBLIC_URL% to their actual value:
URIError: Failed to decode param '/%PUBLIC_URL%/scripts/modernizr.custom.js'
even though they work fine in public/index.html. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I've made sure I don't have any rules setup to do anything else with .html files; as I've seen a few people get mixed up there. Have been messing around with the settings and combing through GitHub issues, but feel like I'm running in circles. Thanks!

babel-plugin-react-css-modules hash not matching the one in JSX

For all the stylename attributes in our code, the hash generated by the JSX is different from the hash generated in the stylename. This is essentially why the CSS is not applying. We are moving from react-css-modules (deprecated) to babel-plugin-react-css-modules. This is causing the issue.

The original babel-plugin-react-css-modules is long abandoned by its author, and effectively broken since mid-2020 when css-loader#4 arrived. Good news, and shameless self-promo, I maintain its up-to-date and enhanced fork: #dr.pogodin/babel-plugin-react-css-modules.

React js build changing the path in css file

but after build using npm install
background-image:url("../lib/images/loader.apng"); is converting to

Webpack configuration to load sass variables without import statement

I'm trying to figure out how to configure webpack in order to import variables file to every scss file inside my component directory. As far as I get it this should do that:
// imports variables.scss into every module component
{
test: /\.scss$/,
exclude: /node_modules/,
use: [
'style-loader',
'css-loader',
'sass-loader',
{
loader: 'sass-resources-loader',
options: {
resources: ['./src/styles/modules/_variables.scss'],
},
},
],
},
In my component's sass (news.scss) I have (without import statement):
text {
color: $greyish;
}
In my component itself:
import css from './news.scss'
...
<p className={css.text}>test</p>
Now, this does not work
{
"status": 1,
"file": "/Users/Bartosz/Projects/matchday-frontend/src/components/News/news.scss",
"line": 7,
"column": 10,
"message": "Undefined variable: \"$greyish\".",
"formatted": "Error: Undefined variable: \"$greyish\".\n on line 7 of src/components/News/news.scss\n>> color: $greyish;\n\n ---------^\n"
}
My whole webpack file is done with npm run eject in create-react-app and it looks like that:

How to perform server-side rendering of react app in AWS Lambda

I've got a react application that works fine in the browser, and now I'm trying to perform server-side rendering.
I'm using webpack (based on the scripts generated by create-react-app after ejecting) to build the application, and I've got 2 entry points, one for SSR, one for the browser. If I understand correctly, webpack should be bundling up all the dependencies, so I shouldn't need anything from node_modules on the server, right?
I'm then using Serverless to package up my application to be served up from AWS Lambda. The deployment runs fine, but when I try to run the application, I get this error:
module initialization error: TypeError
at Object.<anonymous> (/var/task/build/static/js/lambda.js:1:1164536)

Here's my serverless.yml configuration:
service: serverless-test
provider:
name: aws
runtime: nodejs6.10
stage: dev
region: us-east-1
package:
include:
- ./build/**
exclude:
- ./**
functions:
lambda:
handler: build/static/js/lambda.handler
events:
- http: ANY /
- http: 'ANY {proxy+}'
As you can see, I'm including only the build directory, which is where I'm exporting the webpack bundles. If I include everything, the node_modules directory bloats the distribution package and I end up going over the 250 MB limit for AWS Lambda function size, so the upload fails.
I'm wondering, what am I doing wrong here, and what is the right way to do react server-side rendering with AWS Lambda?
Here's my webpack configuration:

SCSS in React - Parent styles overriding child styles

I've used SASS a ton in Rails, but I'm trying to get used to working in an environment that contains components.
I have a parent component called App. App has this scss:
.app {
h1 {
color: blue;
}
}
Then I have a child component INSIDE App called Post. Post has this scss:
.post {
h1 {
color: green;
}
}
So what I expected was to see two h1s, one would be blue, then the other would be green. But I just see all h1s are blue. It seems the parent's style is overriding the child's style.
I was under the impression this is not how SCSS works... is this right? I thought the child style would override the parent style. Is that not true?
Also noticing that namespacing ".app h1" is not working either.... hmm. Here is my full webpack.config file:
const HtmlWebPackPlugin = require('html-webpack-plugin');
module.exports={
module: {
rules: [
{
test: /\.js$/,
exclude: [
"/node_modules/",
"src/tests/"
],
use: {
loader: "babel-loader"
}
},
{
test: /\.scss$/,
use: [
{
loader: "style-loader" // creates style nodes for JS strings
},
{
loader: "css-loader" // translates CSS into CommonJS
},
{
loader: "sass-loader" // compiles Sass to CSS
}
]
},
{
test: /\.html$/,
use: [
{
loader: "html-loader"
}
]
}
]
},
plugins: [
new HtmlWebPackPlugin({
template: "./public/index.html", // where to read
filename: "./index.html" // where to put code
})
]
}
Note, this WORKS in create-react-app. I've included their working webpack.config below:
'use strict';
const autoprefixer = require('autoprefixer');
const path = require('path');
const webpack = require('webpack');
const HtmlWebpackPlugin = require('html-webpack-plugin');
const CaseSensitivePathsPlugin = require('case-sensitive-paths-webpack-plugin');

const ModuleScopePlugin = require('react-dev-utils/ModuleScopePlugin');
const getClientEnvironment = require('./env');
const paths = require('./paths');
// Webpack uses `publicPath` to determine where the app is being served from.
// In development, we always serve from the root. This makes config easier.
const publicPath = '/';
// `publicUrl` is just like `publicPath`, but we will provide it to our app
// as %PUBLIC_URL% in `index.html` and `process.env.PUBLIC_URL` in JavaScript.
// Omit trailing slash as %PUBLIC_PATH%/xyz looks better than %PUBLIC_PATH%xyz.
const publicUrl = '';
// Get environment variables to inject into our app.
const env = getClientEnvironment(publicUrl);
// This is the development configuration.
// It is focused on developer experience and fast rebuilds.
// The production configuration is different and lives in a separate file.
module.exports = {
