ListView Selected Item Style Override - wpf

I have a WPF ListView that I'm trying to apply a custom style too... primarily I want to make the background of the listview box transparent with no border... and I want to override the highlighted and selected item styles. The default highlight is a semi-transparent blue and the selected item is grey. I'd like to override these in order to customize them. I've followed several threads and tutorials... including this one but, my highlight and selected items remain in the default style. Here's what I have.
<UserControl.Resources>
<ResourceDictionary>
<Style x:Key="ListViewStyle" TargetType="ListView">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"></Setter>
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="0"></Setter>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="Transparent"></Setter>
<Style.Resources>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.HighlightBrushKey}" Color="Red" />
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}" Color="Green" />
</Style.Resources>
</Style>
</ResourceDictionary>
</UserControl.Resources>
....
<ListView Style="{StaticResource ListViewStyle}" ItemsSource="{Binding Path=Items}" ScrollViewer.VerticalScrollBarVisibility="Disabled" SelectedItem="{Binding Path=DataContext.Current" >
<ListView.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate DataType="local:Cases">
<StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" HorizontalAlignment="Stretch">
<!-- Some UI Controls Here -->
</StackPanel>
</DataTemplate>
</ListView.ItemTemplate>
</ListView>

This approach of trying to override the system colours doesn't work on Windows 8 and later.
You need to modify the ControlTemplate of the ListViewItem container.
You can copy the default template into your XAML markup by right-clicking on the ListView in design mode in Visual Studio or in Blend and choose Edit Additional Templates->Edit Generated Item Container (ItemContainerStyle) and then edit it as per your requirements by for example changing the Color properties of the SolidColorBrushes:
<ListView ItemsSource="{Binding Path=Items}" SelectedItem="{Binding Path=DataContext.Current" >
<ListView.Resources>
<Style x:Key="FocusVisual">
<Setter Property="Control.Template">
<Setter.Value>

</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.MouseOver.Background" Color="Red"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.MouseOver.Border" Color="#a826A0Da"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.SelectedInactive.Background" Color="#3DDADADA"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.SelectedInactive.Border" Color="#FFDADADA"/>

Change Selection Color of ListBoxItem in WPF

Sorry that my question is redundant for instance with these ones:
WPF Changing ListboxItem Highlight Color when Selected
Why can't I set the background color of a selected ListBoxItem in WPF?
but for whatever reason neither changing the ItemContainerStyle, nor overriding the SystemColors works for me. Can someone tell me what I have to change in this XAML code to change the background color of selected ListBoxItems (or more precisely the ItemsContainer around them) to red? All the other colors that I set are assigned correctly.
<ListBox>
<ListBox.Resources>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.HighlightColorKey}" Color="Red" />
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.HighlightBrushKey}" Color="Red" />
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}" Color="Red" />
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.InactiveSelectionHighlightBrushKey }" Color="Red" />
</ListBox.Resources>
<ListBox.ItemContainerStyle>
<Style TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}">
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="HotPink"/>
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Yellow"/>
<Setter Property="Margin" Value="2"/>
<Style.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="Green"/>
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Red"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsFocused" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="Green"/>
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Red"/>
</Trigger>
</Style.Triggers>
</Style>
</ListBox.ItemContainerStyle>
<ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<TextBlock Text="{Binding}"/>
</DataTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<ListBoxItem>A</ListBoxItem>
<ListBoxItem>B</ListBoxItem>
<ListBoxItem>C</ListBoxItem>
<ListBoxItem>D</ListBoxItem>
</ListBox>
Both approaches do not work because:
The default control templates may not necessarily use the system colors.
The default control template triggers take precedence over your style setters.
You have to extract the default style and control template e.g. by using Visual Studio or Blend in order to have a working base to start from. Adapt the colors in the styles an control template triggers.

</Setter>
</Style>
Then use the style in your ListBox by explicitly referencing it or make it an implicit style style by omitting the x:Key, so it will be applied to all ListBoxItems in scope.

WPF Style BasedOn does not work

I have made a style RadioButtonToggleButtonStyle as below.
<ResourceDictionary xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008"
d1p1:Ignorable="d"
xmlns:d1p1="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006"
xmlns:local="clr-namespace:TeachpendantControl">
<Style x:Key="RadioButtonToggleButtonStyle"
BasedOn="{StaticResource {x:Type ToggleButton}}"
TargetType="{x:Type RadioButton}">
<Style.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsChecked" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Gold"/>
</Trigger>
</Style.Triggers>
</Style>
</ResourceDictionary>
I use it like this below.
<ListBox Grid.Column="0" Grid.Row="0" Grid.RowSpan="10" ItemsSource="{Binding LeftPaneViewModelInfoItems, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" Background="Transparent" SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedViewModelInfoItem}">
<ListBox.ItemContainerStyle>
<Style TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent" />
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}">
<ContentPresenter />
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
</ListBox.ItemContainerStyle>
<ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<RadioButton
Content="{Binding Text}"
GroupName="DisplayPage"
IsChecked="{Binding IsSelected, RelativeSource={RelativeSource Mode=FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type ListBoxItem}}}"
Style="{StaticResource RadioButtonToggleButtonStyle}"
>
</RadioButton>
</DataTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemTemplate>
</ListBox>
The CheckBoxes show up as ToggleButtons when I run the application (but it shows up as CheckBoxes in Design mode).
But I don't get a gold background when the CheckBox (styled as ToggleButton) is checked. Also Visual Studio (2015) complains in the resource file saying "The resource {x:Type ToggleButton}" could not be resolved.
Can anyone provide an explanation of why this does not work (and how to solve it)
You need to modify the ControlTemplate to be able to change the Background of a ToggleButton.
The default ControlTemplate contains hardcoded values that take precedence over the value that you specify in your Style.
You can copy the default template into your project by right-clicking on a ToggleButton in design mode in Visual Studio or in Blend and choose Edit Template->Edit a Copy and then edit it as per your requirements. Try this:
<Style x:Key="RadioButtonToggleButtonStyle" TargetType="{x:Type ToggleButton}">
<Style.Resources>
<Style x:Key="FocusVisual">
<Setter Property="Control.Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate>
<Rectangle Margin="2" SnapsToDevicePixels="true" Stroke="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlTextBrushKey}}" StrokeThickness="1" StrokeDashArray="1 2"/>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Button.Static.Background" Color="#FFDDDDDD"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Button.Static.Border" Color="#FF707070"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Button.MouseOver.Background" Color="#FFBEE6FD"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Button.MouseOver.Border" Color="#FF3C7FB1"/>

<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Button.Disabled.Background" Color="#FFF4F4F4"/>

Override SelectedItem background in a ListBox

I know this subject has been answered over and over again, but I can't achieve to implement it.
I'd like to override the way my ListboxItems are displayed when selected (and if possible, get rid of that hideous selection border).
I found on several posts over here and on the MSDN that the way to achieve it was to override the following brushes in the ItemContainerStyle:
HighlightBrushKey
ControlBrushKey
HighlightTextBrushKey
InactiveSelectionHighlightBrushKey
I tried several ways to achieve it but it systematically fails. Has an update outdated this behaviour or am I implementing it wrong?
Here is my code :
<ListBox BorderBrush="Transparent" ItemsSource="{Binding MyItemSource}" SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedItem, Mode=TwoWay}" SelectionMode="Single">
<ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<Grid>
<Label HorizontalAlignment="Center" Margin="0 1 0 0" Foreground="Black" FontSize="14" Content="{Binding Name}"/>
</Grid>
</DataTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<ListBox.ItemsPanel>
<ItemsPanelTemplate>
<UniformGrid Columns="{Binding ColumnCount}"/>
</ItemsPanelTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemsPanel>
<ListBox.ItemContainerStyle>
<Style TargetType="ListBoxItem">
<Style.Resources>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.HighlightBrushKey}" Color="Blue"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}" Color="Green"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.HighlightTextBrushKey}" Color="Red"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.InactiveSelectionHighlightBrushKey}" Color="Yellow" />
</Style.Resources>
</Style>
</ListBox.ItemContainerStyle>
</ListBox>
Ok, so I finally achieved to override those brushs. It looks like the SystemColor brushes arent used anymore.
The way I overrode the SelectedItem's background was by defining this (most of the code comes from Blend for VS, the template to override is General Item Container).
Here is the ItemContainerStyle I used :
<Style x:Key="FocusVisual">
<Setter Property="Control.Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate>
<Rectangle Margin="2" SnapsToDevicePixels="true" Stroke="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlTextBrushKey}}" StrokeThickness="1" StrokeDashArray="1 2"/>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.MouseOver.Background" Color="#1F26A0DA"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.MouseOver.Border" Color="#a826A0Da"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.SelectedInactive.Background" Color="#3DDADADA"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.SelectedInactive.Border" Color="#FFDADADA"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.SelectedActive.Background" Color="Gray"/>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.SelectedActive.Border" Color="Gray"/>
<Style x:Key="ListBoxItemStyle1" TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}">
<Setter Property="SnapsToDevicePixels" Value="True"/>
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="0"/>
<Setter Property="HorizontalContentAlignment" Value="{Binding HorizontalContentAlignment, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type ItemsControl}}}"/>
<Setter Property="VerticalContentAlignment" Value="{Binding VerticalContentAlignment, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type ItemsControl}}}"/>
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="1"/>
<Setter Property="FocusVisualStyle" Value="{StaticResource FocusVisual}"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}">
<Border x:Name="Bd" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}" SnapsToDevicePixels="true">
<ContentPresenter HorizontalAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}" VerticalAlignment="{TemplateBinding VerticalContentAlignment}"/>
</Border>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<MultiTrigger>
<MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Condition Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True"/>
</MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="Bd" Value="{StaticResource Item.MouseOver.Background}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" TargetName="Bd" Value="{StaticResource Item.MouseOver.Border}"/>
</MultiTrigger>
<MultiTrigger>
<MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Condition Property="Selector.IsSelectionActive" Value="False"/>
<Condition Property="IsSelected" Value="True"/>
</MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="Bd" Value="{StaticResource Item.SelectedInactive.Background}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" TargetName="Bd" Value="{StaticResource Item.SelectedInactive.Border}"/>
</MultiTrigger>
<MultiTrigger>
<MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Condition Property="Selector.IsSelectionActive" Value="True"/>
<Condition Property="IsSelected" Value="True"/>
</MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="Bd" Value="{StaticResource Item.SelectedActive.Background}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" TargetName="Bd" Value="{StaticResource Item.SelectedActive.Border}"/>
</MultiTrigger>
<Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="False">
<Setter Property="TextElement.Foreground" TargetName="Bd" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.GrayTextBrushKey}}"/>
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
BTW the way to override this template using Blend :
In your Objects and Timeline panel : Right click on your ListBox > Edit Additional Templates > Edit General Item Container(ItemContainerStyle)

WPF TreeViewItem Background

How can I change the Background of a selected TreeViewItem when the TreeView (or the Application) looses Focus. A selected item by default has in this situation a light grey background.
EDIT: A try after first answer: But element with TargetName="Bd" will not be found.
<TreeView>
<TreeView.Resources>
<Style x:Key="{x:Type TreeViewItem}" TargetType="{x:Type TreeViewItem}">
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type TreeViewItem}">
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<MultiTrigger>
<MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Condition Property="IsSelected" Value="True"/>
<Condition Property="IsSelectionActive" Value="False"/>
</MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Setter TargetName="Bd" Property="Background" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}}" />
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlTextBrushKey}}" />
</MultiTrigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
</TreeView.Resources>
<TreeViewItem Header="Test1" IsExpanded="True">
<TreeViewItem Header="Test2" />
<TreeViewItem Header="Test3" />
<TreeViewItem Header="Test4" />
<TreeViewItem Header="Test5" />
</TreeViewItem>
</TreeView>
You need to modify the default style for TreeViewItem. Particularly, you need to modify the following trigger:
<Style x:Key="{x:Type TreeViewItem}"
TargetType="{x:Type TreeViewItem}">
...
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type TreeViewItem}">
...
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
...
<MultiTrigger>
<MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Condition Property="IsSelected"
Value="true"/>
<Condition Property="IsSelectionActive"
Value="false"/>
</MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Setter TargetName="Bd"
Property="Background"
Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}}"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground"
Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlTextBrushKey}}"/>
</MultiTrigger>
...
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
...
</Style>
As you can see the trigger sets the background to {DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}} if the item is focused and the selection is not active (focus is somewhere else).
Update:
The full style of TreeViewItem for Aero theme looks like this:
<Style x:Key="{x:Type TreeViewItem}"
TargetType="{x:Type TreeViewItem}">
<Setter Property="Background"
Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="HorizontalContentAlignment"

In all of this you need to modify only the part you are interested in (the background color if selection is inactive) and place those styles in the resources section in App.xaml in your main window.
More easy way for your particular case exists. Like in ListBox, you can replace ControlBrush resource for TreeViewItem's using style:
<Style TargetType="TreeViewItem">
<Style.Resources>
<SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}" Color="{x:Static SystemColors.HighlightColor}" Opacity=".4" />
</Style.Resources>
</Style>
You can specify any other color. Opacity is suggested because if your have several TreeView/ListBox you can determine which one is focused. But of course, editing full style can bring you much more flexibility for future customizations.
Sample with gradients:
<Style TargetType="TreeViewItem">
<Style.Resources>
<LinearGradientBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}" EndPoint='0 1'>
<GradientStop Color='#AA00FF00' />
<GradientStop Offset='1' Color='#AA007700' />
</LinearGradientBrush>
<LinearGradientBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.HighlightBrushKey}" EndPoint='0 1'>
<GradientStop Color='#AA00FF00' />
<GradientStop Offset='1' Color='#AA007700' />
</LinearGradientBrush>
</Style.Resources>
</Style>
If you don't want to override the default contol template, you can define your own template for the headers using textblock and apply the style in that template to the textblock itself (there's a small padding in the default control template of TreeViewItem, so you should also set it to zero to achieve pixel-perfection).
<TreeView.Resources>
<Style TargetType="TreeViewItem">
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="0"/>
<Setter Property="HeaderTemplate">
<Setter.Value>
<DataTemplate>
<DataTemplate.Resources>
<Style TargetType="TextBlock">
<Style.Triggers>
<MultiDataTrigger>
<MultiDataTrigger.Conditions>
<Condition Binding="{Binding IsSelected, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType=TreeViewItem}}" Value="True"/>
<Condition Binding="{Binding IsSelectionActive, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType=TreeViewItem}}" Value="False"/>
</MultiDataTrigger.Conditions>
<Setter Property="Background" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.HighlightBrushKey}}" />
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.HighlightTextBrushKey}}" />
</MultiDataTrigger>
</Style.Triggers>
</Style>
</DataTemplate.Resources>
<TextBlock Text="{Binding}"></TextBlock>
</DataTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
</TreeView.Resources>
<TreeViewItem Header="Test1" IsExpanded="True">
<TreeViewItem Header="Test2" />
<TreeViewItem Header="Test3" />
<TreeViewItem Header="Test4" />
<TreeViewItem Header="Test5" />
</TreeViewItem>

DataTemplate, Style, Triggers

I have a <ListBox> with custom <ListBox.ItemTemplate> and <DataTemplate> in it:
<ListBox>
<ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<Border BorderBrush="Black" BorderThickness="2" CornerRadius="5">
<Image Source="{Binding Picture}" />
</Border>
</DataTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemTemplate>
</ListBox>
Now when I'm choosing the ListBoxItem it gets ugly with blue colored row selection. I'd like to change it. I want to color only border's background and nothing else. Also I want to change MouseOver behavior. I've tried trough triggers, but ContentPresenter doesn't have Background property.
UPD:
Well, I've managed to change the background on MouseEnter and MouseLeave:
<EventTrigger RoutedEvent="Border.MouseEnter">
<BeginStoryboard>
<Storyboard >
<ColorAnimation Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background.Color"
To="LightBlue" Duration="0:0:0.03"/>
</Storyboard>
</BeginStoryboard>
</EventTrigger>
But still can't change the Background when item's selected. I'm trying through:
<Trigger Property="ListBoxItem.IsSelected" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Red" />
</Trigger>
Doesn't work
The coloring you're looking for is in two Triggers inside the template for ListBoxItem, not the ItemTemplate. To change this you need to edit the ItemContainerStyle for the ListBox. This is the default that can be used as a starting point:
<ListBox>
<ListBox.ItemContainerStyle>
<Style TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="HorizontalContentAlignment" Value="{Binding Path=HorizontalContentAlignment, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type ItemsControl}}}"/>
<Setter Property="VerticalContentAlignment" Value="{Binding Path=VerticalContentAlignment, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type ItemsControl}}}"/>
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="2,0,0,0"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}">
<Border x:Name="Bd" SnapsToDevicePixels="true" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}">
<ContentPresenter HorizontalAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}" VerticalAlignment="{TemplateBinding VerticalContentAlignment}" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}"/>
</Border>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="true">
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="Bd" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.HighlightBrushKey}}"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.HighlightTextBrushKey}}"/>
</Trigger>
<MultiTrigger>
<MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Condition Property="IsSelected" Value="true"/>
<Condition Property="Selector.IsSelectionActive" Value="false"/>
</MultiTrigger.Conditions>
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="Bd" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}}"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlTextBrushKey}}"/>
</MultiTrigger>
<Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="false">
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.GrayTextBrushKey}}"/>
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
</ListBox.ItemContainerStyle>
</ListBox>
You can do this by using triggers. I have in one of my projects something like this:
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="true">
<Setter Property="Panel.ZIndex" Value="1"/>
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="Bd" Value="{StaticResource TabItemSelectedBackground}"/>
</Trigger>
Though it doesn't change Border color, it shows how to change the Background. So, maybe try to set this to null. This triggers are part of a custom Style in which a tracking is achieved using IsMouseOver property.
