SQL Developer / SQLPLUS login to Oracle 12c DB using AD credentials through Kerberos

I'm totally new to Oracle and have been tasked with setting up 12c for a class a professor is teaching next semester. He wants the students to be able to use their AD accounts to access the database they'll be working on. I looked at available options, and without extending the AD schema, kerberos looked to be my only option.
I tried following a combination of these:
http://www.ateam-oracle.com/configuring-your-oracle-database-for-kerberos-authentication/
https://docs.oracle.com/database/121/DBSEG/asokerb.htm#DBSEG9646
In terms of the Oracle documentation above, my process is breaking down on step 8. After step 7 (which I performed on a domain controller), when I attempt to login to SQLPLUS with SYSTEM account, I was receiving:
ORA-12641: Authentication service failed to initialize
If I try to connect with the SYSTEM (or Active Directory) account through SQL DEVELOPER I get this:
Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12505, TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in the connect descriptor
So I added NTS back to SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES, but the problem persists. On top of that, Enterprise Manager Express (https://:5500/em) is also no longer accessible.
This same thing happened the first time I tried stepping through the available documentation, and I managed to get everything back to a default by deleting sqlnet.ora, listerner.ora and starting from scratch... But now I'm back in the same place again.
If it is helpful, here are the contents of sqlnet.ora:
#
SQLNET.KERBEROS5_KEYTAB = c:\Windows\oracle.keytab
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (BEQ, TCPS, KERBEROS5, NTS)
SQLNET.KERBEROS5_CONF = c:\Windows\krb5.ini
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_KERBEROS5_SERVICE = oracle
SQLNET.KERBEROS5_CC_NAME=OSMSFT:
ADR_BASE = D:\app\oracle\product\12.1.0\dbhome_1\log
#
I did comment out SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (BEQ, TCPS, KERBEROS5, NTS) which I allowed me to login with the built-in accounts again, and brought Enterprise Manager Express back up.
Any guidance on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How can I resolve error when trying to launch instance on Amazon RDS?

I'm using the AWS Toolkit in Visual Studio 2013 to attempt to launch a new instance on Amazon RDS. I get through the wizard for creating the new instance and after clicking finish, there is a delay, and then a message appears saying:
Error launching DB instance: DB Security Groups can only be associated with VPC DB Instances using API version 2012-01-15 through 2012-09-17.
Launching different types of instances (SQL Server SE vs MySQL) doesn't seem to help, nor does selecting different versions of the platforms (SQL Server 2008 vs 2012). The only thing that gets it to go through is unchecking the box for "default" in the DB Security Groups area. However, I feel like something is going on here that shouldn't be happening.
Can anyone explain why this is happening and how I can resolve it other than by not setting a default security group? Thank you.
If you created your AWS account recently, you will be using a VPC by default.
It sounds like the API the plugin is trying to use hasn't been updated. The latest version is 1.5.6, and looking at the history it seems like some of these features were added in 1.5.0.
I finally solved it! Since I couldn't use the API that the VS 2013 plugin uses, I had to manually add my IP to the Security Group created for my Elastic Beanstalk.
Go to the console, ec2's security groups configuration
Find the one which description matches your Beanstalk (e.g.: Security Group created for Beanstalk Environment to give access to RDS instances)
Hit Inbound, Edit and add a new rule for All Traffic (I guess HTTP should be enough, but just in case).
In Source, select My IP and Save.

SQL Server 2012 DB mail failure

So, I never expected to spend 6 hours trying to get Send DBMail working on SQL Server 2012, but here we are.
I'm trying to simply set up an SMTP server to use with Database Mail. I've tried both Verizon and Google. I've tested the settings in Thunderbird, and yet I still receive the following error:
10/31/2013 14:56:30,,Error,The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 1 (2013-10-31T14:56:30). Exception Message: Cannot send mails to mail server. (The operation has timed out.).),7084,6932,6038,,10/31/2013 2:56:30 PM,sa
This is getting ridiculous, I've scoured the web for similar issues and solutions, and found lots of ideas that didn't work. I even started an clean AWS instance with Server 2012 and it has the same problem. I've disabled Windows Firewall and Defender, and honestly I'm stumped and frustrated.
If you have access to add a role to your server then I would add the TELNET client for smtp testing. Test your smtp config using the following TELNET commands:
C:/>TELNET <mail server> 25
EHLO <mail server>
<IF AUTH REQUIRED ENTER CREDENTIALS>
MAIL FROM:<any account#yourdomain.com>
RCPT TO:<where you want mail to go #domain.com>
DATA
<ENTER>
<MESSAGE>
<PRESS PERIOD(".")>
If you do not get errors in telnet and/or the logs then Database Mail should work fine using MAIL SERVER. You need to set up a profile and mail account in sqlserver but the wizard is straight forward. Next, add a few operators with valid email addresses and you should receive your notifications.
So after much stress, and trying a different server/version, I found that MailJet worked flawlessly, and I'm back up and running.
I think Steoleary is on to something that somewhere along the line, the connection is being silently blocked. Either way, for anyone who runs into this problem, try another mail server, and another one, and another one.
My guess is the database mail feature is acting as a relay, and Verizon and Gmail are blocking it.

How To See User Database On PGAdminIII with Heroku?

I set up PGAdmin III with my Heroku database.
I was wondering how I can see my Users database. I am still building my website so I wanted to test how they are being registered in the database.
However, all I see is tons of databases with strange "d10abc111ldlapsaman"-like names. How do I access my User database?
If PGAdmin III is not the right tool for this - what tool should I get to see my users of my still - in -development Heroku application?
You may have figured out your issue by now, but what you want to do is go to https://postgres.heroku.com. Look at your default connection settings for your database. Now, do the following in pgAdmin III using these settings:
File -> Add Server
Name: anything you want
Host: ec2-xx-xxx-xxx-xxx.compute-1.amazonaws.com
Port: 5432
Maintenance DB: yourdbname (in your example it would be d10abc111ldlapsaman)
Username: uiuskwljksjdkje (change to yours)
Password: sdjfj3##f333edfs (change to yours)
The other settings can stay at what they initially were.
You should no be connected to the server. Expand it and scroll through the long list until you find your database name (the one that you put as Maintenance DB).
You're done!
Updating the answer for someone who still needs it, like me:
Go to your heroku account and find your database credentials (you should open your app, then postgres on add-ons and finally settings):
screenshot
In pgadmin you should right-click on 'servers'-> create -> server and enter your credentials:
General/Name: the name that pgadmin will show (only for you)
Connection/Host name: Host in credentials
Connection/Port: Port in credentials (probably 5432)
Connection/Maintenance database: Database in credentials
Connection/Username: User in credentials
Connection/Password: Password in credentials (tip: check the box to save it)
SSL/SSL mode: Require
Advanced/DB restriction: your database (same as maintenance db) -> this will filter only your db of the many others that will spam if you don't do that.

Connect to a heroku database with pgadmin

I would like to manage my Heroku database with pgadmin client. By now, I've been doing this with psql.
When I use data from heroku pg:credentials to connect de DB using pgadmin, I obtain:
An error has occurred:
Error connecting to the server: FATAL: permission denied for database
"postgres" DETAIL: User does not have CONNECT privilege.
How to achieve the connection?
Open the "Properties" of the Heroku server in pgAdminIII and change the "Maintenance DB" value to be the name of the database you want to connect to.
The default setup is suitable for DBAs et al who can connect to any database on the server, but apparently that isn't true in your case.
After you change the Maintenance DB name as suggested by araqnid's answer above, you should also add your database to the DB restrictions field because without this you will see thousands of databases and you may not be able to find yours in the list if the list is too long.
More details here - How to hide databases that I am not allowed to access
This is for pgAdmin 4
In order to connect pgAdmin to your database (postgres instance in Heroku), do the following:
Login to Heroku, and select the application in which you have the database
Select the Resources tab and then click on "Heroku Postgres Ad-on" (see below). This will open up a new tab.
Select the Settings tab and then click on "View Credentials..." (see below)
You will get the following information that you will use in pgAdmin:
Go to pgAdmin, and create a new server
In the General tab, give a useful name
In the Connection tab, fill the info you got at Heroku
In order to avoid seeing thousands of databases, you need to add your database name to DB restriction in the Advanced tab (see below)
We require SSL for connections outside Heroku. Please verify whether you're forcing SSL in your client.
Answered more thoroughly here: Connecting pgAdmin3 to Postgres on Heroku
We don't allow connections to the postgres database, so be sure to set Maintenance DB to your database name, and be sure to use SSL.
Change the Maintenance Database to the name of your Database, e.g. dva70000p0090. This should work.
the db password local isnt the same db password heroku. please check the heroku ip postgtres address and extrac
