but it is not giving me exact solution. As it needs to take first CAR080 and perform copy operation then in next cycle it should take CAR085 and perform copying and then finally CAR087.
Need the code urgently.
Just simplify. This is equivalent to your code but without variables being set inside the for block, so you don't need delayed expansion (read here) to retrieve the value from the changed variables

Sadly I couldn't yet manage find a working solution but hopefully this time.
Long story short, we got a printer and we are currently unable to configure the scanfolder to our network drives. So I need a script to rename and move the files but keep them all.
As far as I managed to come I got a smart idea to move the files into a firstfolder to avoid that the files are overwritten. Next I need to either rename the files with a counter or move them and keep them all.
I choose the rename option since this seems more simple but I ran into one big issue.
I have no idea how I make it work. So what I'm trying is to first set the variable and do a first test calculation. Just for a first quick test. Now it already works for the first count but sadly it doesn't count up as hoped since he does the rename for all the files before increasing the value of the variable so only one file is renamed.

About 20 Files are renamed to something like Test.1.pdf, Test.2.pdf .... Test.20.pdf and then moved to their destination.
The moving is not an issue but if I could manage to get this feature working I can adapt it to whatever I need.
You can simply move the files, but first check if the file exists in destination, if it does, rename it using a numeric value after the name. Here is something that might work. You just need to change source and destination folder below. The actual move will not occur as I added echo to the second last and last line to demonstrate what it will do, if it works, simply remove echo from both lines.

Rather have a label and permanently goto it after completed. Here is a simple example of something like that, copy it to a script and run it, see the result:

So what I'm trying to do is, i have a bat file that makes timestamped backups(for example, 180126_053327 in the format: yymmdd_hhmmss). I'm trying to create this bat to add to it, so i can have it lookup those backups, display in console to allow the user to select the backup they want to restore by inputting the number they want and then copy it to a location.

It cannot be found because %udir% is not in the current directory. This means that your base directory, I:\AM_Configs-backups, needs to be pre-fixed to your Copy command.

I ended up using this cus i have another batch for switching and backing up:
to kinda give you an idea, i have a primary bat for switching and copying configs, which will start teh program automatically after their copied. in that bat i also have code for backing up current configs to a location using time/date and creates the folders in this format: yymmdd_hhmmss...i needed an easy restore function, which with the link and code you provided helped with the user able to select which folder to restore and copying it to the programs data folder to be used, then auto-starting the program using the copied config.

Here is a method that does not depend on the sort order used by the file system, preserving the numbers as occurring in the original file names.
For each file name (for instance, test_this_01 SELR_Opening_00000 (1).jpg), the portion after the last under-score _ is retrieved (00000 (1)). Then the parentheses and the space are removed and then the length is trimmed to five characters (00001). This string replaces the original one in the file name finally (test_this_01 SELR_Opening_00001.jpg); the file name must not contain the replaced portion (00000 (1)) multiple times (hence file names like this should not occur: test_this_00000 (1) SELR_Opening_00000 (1).jpg):

Adapt the directory location and the file search pattern in the top section of the script as you like.
After having tested, remove the upper-case ECHO command in order to actually rename files.
I have created a batch file in a windows server to parse the name of the files stored in a folder.
The name of the file contains a set of parameters splitted by the hyphen, e.g.
ACC-INV-APR-2015
I need to check the syntax correctness of the first two parameters (department and document type) e.g. I would avoid that the hyphen is inserted more than a time in the file name.
On the basis of the check, the files with wrong syntax will be moved to a folder.
We have to consider that, apart the first two parameters that are mandatory, the other ones could be skipped and therefore the file name could have some repetitive hypens after the first two parameters, e.g.
FIN-DOC-APR-2015--MFH-P01
We would avoid to have some file name like: FIN--DOC-APR-2015-MFH-P01

Sounds like a job for regular expressions. The Windows utility findstr will let you match based on a regular expression. It exits status 0 if found, non-zero otherwise. This lends itself to conditional execution. In a cmd console, enter findstr /? for details on supported regexp syntax.
It'll also speed things up to cache the contents of departments.txt and typedocs.txt into variables, rather than open, read, close, repeat for each file checked.
So, with that in mind, here's how I'd do it:

Here is what I've come up with, however I can't get the correct reference of xcopy in my code from what Aacini has provided in another post. cmd console will say it cannot find file "!lastName!!baseExt!" and then show that 0 files have been copied. It's not copying because I think the xcopy syntax will not allow for substitutions for the "source" "directory" relationship following xcopy.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
