Why am I getting "Unable to load the specified metadata resource" error? - sql-server

I have an MVC5 web application which I usually develop using my laptop.
I am trying to get the app running on my main machine at home for home-working days but have a problem connecting to the local dev database on SQL Server - when I start the app I get the following error:
More info 30/11/16:
Note that the model is generated from EDML using Entity Developer
Unable to load the specified metadata resource. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
The solution consists of 2 projects, one of which is an entity model project which is generated from EDMX.
Note: On my main machine (where it isn't working) the connection string in Web.config is the same as the machine where it works except for Data Source which refers to the SQL Server name on the main machine - I have checked this is correct several times:
I have read several Stack Overflow posts with similar issues - most point to something wrong with the path to the csdl, ssdl, msl part of the connection string.
I have:
Checked the server name is correct in the connection string
Checked the database name is correct in the connection string
Checked the database exists and is available
Checked each of the three files are where the connection string says they are (they are)
Tried using wildcard in the connection string: res://*/dllname.csdl|res://*/dllname.ssdl|res://*/dllname.msl
Update 30/11/2016:
From the suggestions in this link I have:
Checked the MetadataArtifactProcessing property - it is not set to Copy to Output directory
Checked the connection string
We don't have a post-compile task
From the suggestion in this link I have tried setting the connection string connectionString="metadata=res://*/;

There's a very popular question over there and from its rating I can assume it helped a lot of people. It even mentions a blog post with complete troubleshooting for this problem. Also, this answer looks like something you didn't try yet.

Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. (REDIS Cache)

I'm trying to resolve an issue we have specific to using REDIS cache on our web apps but need help understanding the stacktrace.
We intermittently get Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation logged in our error table when users are viewing the report viewer, but there are no signs client side that anything has gone wrong.
I've had a read through this article: How to solve: "exception was thrown by the target of invocation" C# however it doesn't seem to cover our specific issue.
The stacktrace logged by our logger;

Looks to be an issue during Deserialization. Could the class definition have changed between when it was serialized and when it is being deserialized?

MsDeploy with DbDacFx provider and Database reference

We are using DbDacFx provider to sync our production machine.
We have ssdt database project in our solution that we deploy along with our website.
The A.sqlproj has references to master.dacpac and another database project's dacpac, say X.dacpac.
All dacpacs are in same location for deployment.
When we try to deploy the A.dacpac we get errors as below:
Info: Deploying package to database: Faulted. Error: The reference to external elements from the source named 'X.dacpac' could not be resolved, because no such source is loaded. Error: The reference to external elements from the source named 'master.dacpac' could not be resolved, because no such source is loaded. .....above errors repeated multiple times..... Need to know how we can overcome the issues.
Thanks
Yatin.
Do the referenced dacpacs exist on the machine that is running the deploy?
If they do the easiest is to copy the dacpacs into the same folder as the dacpac you are deploying as the same directory will be checked, failing that the original path that contained the original dacpac.
This is still a pain.
We plan on scripting the sqlpackage.exe file command through runCommand provider and get automation going !!
Closing the question.
Thanks

Any ideas what I'm missing or what might be happening?
So this issue ended up being a custom DLL found in the BIN folder of the DNN website that Ryan was upgrading.
My non-scientific approach to resolving this was to:
Remove DLLS in bulk in the BIN folder (keep a copy of the DLLs as you aren't sure which one is the problem, put them back after testing)
Load the site (using admin/site settings page)
See if page still errored, if so, repeat steps 1 and 2
Ends up the DLL that was causing the problem was I believe a webservice/api URL for testing. Removing that corrected the issue on the 7.3.4 instance of DNN that they were using.

The configuration file is written for IIS7 but you build in webserver in Studio want a IIS6 sonfig file.
I have wrote abut this in ny EPiServer notes
http://epiwiki.se/troubleshooting/classfactory-not-initialized
I am going out on a limb and guessing here, but did you by chance do development on EPiServer 5 SP 2 and deploy on EPiServer 5 SP 3?
In EPiServer 5 SP3 there was some remodelling in how a EPiServer handles the initialization of the application. These changes made it so that it's not possible to hook into the datafactory events in Application_Start. Instead you need to first hook into Application_FirstBeginRequest and then we have a instance of the DataFactory to work with.

Definitely sounds like a configuration error. As Mattias said, the default web.config is for IIS7. This can cause problems when running IIS6 or Cassini.

The vs2008 designer for reports and report viewer are not backwards compatible with 2.0. In the same way you cannot design 2005 reports with vs2008 - that may be your issue.
I had something similar once. You might want to make sure the test machine has the ReportViewer dll installed in the GAC. Microsoft has created an installer to make this easier.
Question: Are you using Reporting Services in local mode with a report viewer control inside winforms?
My installer copies all required dlls
Microsoft.ReportViewer.Common.dll
Microsoft.ReportViewer.ProcessingObjectModel.dll
Microsoft.ReportViewer.Winforms.dll
to ProgramFiles/myAppname folder.
It works perfectly on Vista/XP but the issue is at Win98.
I'll try to install these dll's at GAC, maybe that's a problem. I'm trying to avoid running extra installers inside my installer.

if that's true, then it's really stupid. do you know any simple & free report engine for .net 2.0?
