i would like to ask if anybody having the similar problems like me.
i have downloaded the newest SQL Server Management Studio 2016 Preview from Microsoft web site, and after i installed it (successfully and i need to restart my notebook said the warning box) then, suddenly nothing happens, there is a folder on the start menu that says SQL Server Management Studio 2016, but the folder is self is empty and i do not see the app, first i thought must be i missed something, so i went back and repair those SSMS (through the Repair Menu), but still it is giving me the same error, does anybody here have the similar problem and a way out of it?, since i need this SSMS 2016 to query to my Azure SQL Database.

That happened with me few times when i tried to install it in not the Administrator mode.
So, try to do that in elevated mode, if that will not help, try to download it again or just rollback to the older version (2014), as it works perfectly with the SQL Azure. SSMS 2016 is still in preview, so the unexpected behavior may happen.
So, it turns out that in Windows 10, all the start menu options may not show up. Try visiting C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft SQL Server 2016 RC3 in your File explorer to see if the SSMS shortcut is available there.

I am working on a project where I will be provisioned a SQL Server 2017 database server. However, the only version of SQL Server Management Studio available to me is 2008R2. I could request a newer version but this may take 1-2 months before it is finally installed on my machine.
Am I going to run into compatibility issues? Are there any database settings in SQL Server 2017 I would need to set in order to use this?
I am pretty unfamiliar with the MS suite of database tools so sorry for my ignorance in this! Thanks

I have a managed system so I am not able to install or run software that has not been "approved". I have tried the portable version of VS Code but that did not work for me. I am going through the process of requests SSMS 2017 but like I said in the question this will not be available for 1-2 months. In the meantime will SSMS 2008 work?
As unlikely as this may be, I happen to have two, and only two, versions of SSMS installed on my machine; 2008R2 and 2017. I'm in the midst of an upgrade project.
I opened SSMS 2008R2 and was to connect to and generally poke around on a SQL Server 2017 server and the related databases. I didn't do anything too complicated (a few SELECT statments & an UPDATE), but they worked. The objects I expected to be visible were visible. And I didn't have to do anything to make it work. It just worked.

Except that every time I right clicked on a table, an error box opened with this message:
Index was outside the bounds of the array. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
But if I hit the OK button, the box cleared and the desired right click menu opened and functioned. That will get irritating, but if you poke around in the Options menu, there might be a way to make it stop. I invested no minutes trying to do that.
At the very least, you should be able to work while you're waiting for your upgrade.
For what it's worth, I work for a government contractor and have the same level of security constraints you do, so I feel your pain.
Another approach is to run sqlcmd, which would have been installed with SQL Server 2008R2. I was able to connect from sqlcmd to a SQL Server 2017 Docker container (external/internal ports 1433). I did not encounter any errors/warnings when creating a database and table, and running some light queries.
Interestingly, I was unable to connect to the same server using SSMS 2008R2. Perhaps the protocol used or the security required (e.g., TLS 1.2) for the underlying connection was different. Clearly it works based on Eric Brandt's results.
I have a problem with installing SQL Server 2012 (no matter which edition I choose).
Installation usually runs well, but near the end shows up an error:

After I click OK button, the installation reaches it's end and shows up another window:
After that I am able to start, for example SQL Management Studio, but cannot connect to database. Also services of SQL Server are stopped and I am not able to start them manually (any try throws an undefined error):
I tried complete reinstalling of SQL Server, cleaning registry entries, different editions of that software - none method helped. Also, I tried the .iso images of installation media on other computers - it worked well and installed without any errors.
My OS is Windows 8.1 x64.
I had installed SQL Server 2008 R2, the installation was succesful. But I can't open the Management Studio because this error is shown:
Package 'Microsoft SQL Management Studio Package' failed to load.

You need to rename or delete the Registry Key for,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

Before re-installing software etc, you might just perform the following simple check.
Right click on the short-cut you use to launch SQL Server Management Studio, then ensure that Start in is set to the same PATH as Target
e.g. if Target is set to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\SqlWb.exe
then Start in should be set to the same path (minus the filename) i.e.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\
(On a PC which I was given at work, 'Start in' was blank and this gave the same error as reported in the above posts.)
From a first look at the log, your installation appears to be corrupt as Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.dll is failing to load.
Can you please check to see if Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.dll is in the GAC?
If it is, please run the fusion log (you should find this under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\<sdk version>\bin). Go to settings and turn on "log bind errors to disk" and then try running VS. The log file should tell you where the assembly binding failure.
Had the same issues, started to happen to me out of the blue.
Tried probably everything I could find on the network without success.
I am running Windows 7, and what finally helped was installing Service Pack 1
(I hadn't had it before).
I used the 'Repair' feature of the 'SQL Server Installation Center' to repair <Shared Tools>, rather than an instance. Worked a treat.
I had this problem on a Windows 2008 r2 server. The solution was to right-click on the icon and select 'Run as Administrator'.

This error due to managment studio did not detect dot net framework hence uninstall dot net 4 and reinstall it.
I tried that , it's working.
I tried the following, I had same problem for sql server 2008 r2 release
Renamed HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
Reinstall SQL server
Repairer SQL server
Reinstall management studio for 2008 r2
All above did not help but new fresh and latest management studio installation helped and works fine now.
It's worked for me after delete Local user profile. (Logoff and login as Admin delete user profile and re-login).
I previously had sql server 2005 express and uninstalled it.. I also uninstalled any vs related programs and installed visual web developer 2008 express edition with SP1. now that I am trying to install sql server 2008, I am seing error messages like no other and leave that alone without any suggestions..
the latest one which I could not come to a proper solution on the internet is;
consistency validation for sql server registry keys error which suggests
"The SQL Server registry keys from a prior installation cannot be modified. To continue, see SQL Server Setup documentation about how to fix registry keys.
as you might have guessed nothing so informative in the documentation... Also, when I try to delete any sql server related registry key, it does not let me. (yes I stopped all the related services..)

You can try with this procedure :
Stop all SQL Server Services
Remove all SQL Server Services with sc delete servicename
Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Select and Remove all Microsoft
SQL Server programs
Open regedit and remove all SQL Server folders in this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT
Remove SQL Server folders from Program Files directory
Reboot
This procedure should resolve the issue, i've resolved with this procedure ...
i found this to happen if you had an add-in for SSMS installed which hasn't been uninstalled before ssms was uninstalled.
You may need to change the permissions on the relevant registry keys using regedt32 first so that you can then delete the keys via normal regedit
Well actually, I believe, one should not go through such mess in order to accomplish a simple task like this. In the end, I ended up formatting my PC and re-installing SQL Server.
I know this is an old question and you already said in comments that you reformatted the machine. However, I just ran into this exact message and wanted to share my solution because it was so easy, but the error message didn't help at all!
I was using the wrong installation package. I had a 64-bit Intel Windows 7 computer and I was trying to use the x86 version of SQL Server 2008. Once I found the correct version (x64) I did not get this error and the install proceeded normally.
I had a similar problem because I still had some remnants of SQL Server 2005 left - not the services, it was some parts of the IDE. Anyway, to resolve it I used the option to upgrade (sorry, I can't remember the exact option just now). After running the upgrade portion, which took a few minutes, I could then run the full install with no problems.
I applied SQL Server 2005 SP2 and marked all the components to be updated, including Client tools, but the version in the Help -> About box still has version 1399, while the server does indeed had 3042.
I then re-applied SP2 to only Client tools, and everything ran successfully (again, first time did too) but still, no version update for management studio.
Now, I just applied SP3 with everything successfully, but still management studio version did not get updated.
How can I update it? Or at least how can I uninstall just Management studio so I can install it from a newer DVD?

If you go to Control Panel > Add Remove programs and then choose the appropriate SQL Server installation, this will start the typical install wizard for SQL Server.
You can then select the specific components that you wish to uninstall.
If you are having difficulties with SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 may I suggest that you visit the SQL Server Central forums as there are a wealth of resources for SQL Server SP3. It was actually due to user demand from this forum that resulted in there even being an SP3 release.

I got the Error in sql server sp3 installation log which caused this:
Error Number : 29538
Error Description : MSP Error: 29538 SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to rename a file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\mssqlsystemresource1.ldf. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.
Hate to answer my own question, but I had to manually un-install Client Tools, re-install them using SQL Server 2005 setup, and THEN apply the updates.
It wasn't working by just trying to apply updates over the existing original installation.
And i mention un-installing using the SQL Server 2005 Setup because trying to do it from the Add/Remove Programs dialog won't let you or will give you trouble.
