Concurrent update on record in Salesforce - salesforce

In system I am developing, user can access particular page which is used to make DML operation on custom object. I want to fulfill following business case :
User A opens a Page made changes on page but did not click Save.
At the same time User B opens a page made changes and click Save. User B data got saved in record.
Now user A came and click Save. But as data is outdated I want to prompt user that "you are over righting the latest update. Do you want to continue."
Is there any faster out-of-box way available to achieve it ?

Assuming this is in a VisualForce page, you could check if the value has changed inside your Save method.
Query for the LastModifiedDate of all records you may change, and save that in your controller. This should be done in your controller's constructor and/or anywhere you re-load the record(s).
In the save method, first query the record(s) again to check if the LastModifiedDate has been changed. If it has been changed, prompt the user.

Assuming you are trying to insert a record into an object.
You can write a validation rule on that object. Check if that record is already inserted or not and show an error message.

Website "you can do this" script

I want to create a training path for new users accessing my site. This training path must display info bubbles showing what you can do on every page, but only the first time you access it.
So, for example, if a user enters a page where there's an edit button an info box should appear next to the edit button telling the user that he can edit that page.
I will create the script myself, I just want to know what's the best method to check if the user has already seen that box or not. I was thinking about storing in database a boolean value for each info box which will be set to true if the user has seen the box. To save some queries from the DB I think I can also store the same values in localStorage or in Cookies.
What is the best practice for creating user training paths for a website?
The way I suggest is to store user id (ip or username ? ) and a bit value for each bubble like you say.
PS: for your script you can use this:

Display Alert box through the trigger - salesforce

Is it possible to display an alert message (not error message) through a trigger? I have written a trigger that checks for duplicate accounts in the system. The trigger at the moment gives an error message to the user telling that there is a duplicate account. But, if the user changes the value of a field "Is record near to duplicate?" to YES, the trigger allows the user to save the record.
But, I want to display the error message in an alert pop up box like "Account with this Name exists,are you sure you want to continue" and then user clicks Yes and the record gets created. Any thoughts on how I can do this. My code is below:
for(Account account: System.Trigger.New)
{
if(accountMap.containsKey(account.Physical_Street__c)==accountMap2.containsKey(account.Phone))
if(accountMap.containsKey(account.Physical_Street__c)==accountMap3.containsKey(account.Name))
if(account.Is_record_near_to_duplicate__c.equals('No'))
{
account.addError('Account with this Name,Street and Phone Number already exists. If you still wish to create the agency change the value of field "Is Record Near To Duplicate" to YES');
}
}
If you really need an alert box then you could create a custom javascript button that uses the ajax toolkit to replace the standard save button.
However, as Baxter said you are getting pretty far from standard salesforce look and feel. I would recommend instead to add an error on the checkbox field instead of the object so it is clear to the user what they need to select.
if(account.Is_record_near_to_duplicate__c.equals('No'))
{
account.Is_record_near_to_duplicate__c.addError('Agency with this Name, Physical Street and Phone Number already exists. If you still wish to create the agency change the value of field "Is Record Near To Duplicate" to YES');
}
Unless you write a custom visualforce page that processes the error message and then displays it as a popup there's no way to do this.
If you wanted the alert to modify the data you may look at using the ajax api to set the Is_record_near_to_duplicate__c field to 'Yes' but either way you're getting pretty far from the standard functionality and interface with this.
It is not straight forward to implement a pop-up alert for a trigger error, and pop-ups went out-of-fashion a long time ago. If you are going through the hassle, you might as well implement a custom soultion on a VF page.
Throw a custom exception(for dupe accounts) from the trigger, and catch it in your controller. When you catch this exception, you can dynamically displayed section on the page which asks the user to confirm his/her action. When the user confirms the action, the page will do the rest.
Hope this makes sense!

Want to display results of a callout

When a user 'Saves' a Contact (for example), whether it's new or just updated, I need to:
Do an external callout using one of the Contact field values as a lookup
Display the results of the callout, so the user can make a selection
Update the Contact based on the user's selection display the updated Contact
I have found two aproaches, but have reached a point in both that I need to resolve.
Trigger Based Method
In the 'after' trigger pass the lookup string to a callback.
Update the Contact with the selection
Issues
How do you pass the lookup string or results to a visualforce page to display the lookup results?
When the user makes the selection and the update has been done, how do I move back to the updated contact?
Override Base Method
I found a discussion here that seems to suggests using overriding & redirection to someone asking about 'Edit'. I think this could also be done with the 'Save' button.
Issue
This is meant to be a deployable sollution, so I think that the override has to be set in code (I'm using the IDE) and not via Setup (or am I wrong?). I can't find out if this is possible or how to do it
Sorry for detailed question. Didn't want to just ask the wrong question (i.e. assume I know the best approach).
Thanks...
For the trigger-based method, you cannot change the built-in Save functionality, but (per your second solution) you can override the Edit button and recreate the Edit page with Visualforce, which would give you full control over the Save button and how you handle the callout and redirecting.
The release notes for Spring '10 indicate that standard-button overrides are now available for packaging, as they can be created through the Metadata API.

Where do I add a trigger for "Notes and Attachments" in salesforce.com?

I cannot find where in the salesforce.com UI I can add a trigger on a file attachment. I can find triggers on almost everything else, but attachment seems to be missing from the list (even when I view source on the page and search it. Does anyone know WHERE I can put this trigger in?
There is no way to do it directly as Attachment is one of those "lesser" objects that salesforce really gets "protective" about in a random and biased way. The only "legit" way to do it is to use some external build&deploy tools such as Force.com IDE.
If however you are not a stranger to undocumented 'hacks' do the following. Go to any object's trigger list and click create new. In the URL locate entity query string parameter (e.g. entity=Case) and change it to Attachment (entity=Attachment) and press Enter. Newl loaded screen will accept Attachment trigger.
Using Eclipse (Force.com IDE plug-in), right-click on your project & select "New" > "Apex Trigger". In the dialogue window that pops up, there is an "Object" dropdown / picklist, choose the object you want from this list - "Note" or "Attachment" etc. - then choose the "events" you want to trigger to execute on.
NOTE: a best practice is only one (1) trigger per object since you cannot guarantee the order in which multiple triggers on the same object will execute.
Have you tried creating the trigger from, force.com IDE??
In my opinion it should be possible from there.
To write a trigger for attachment, there is no straight way to do it but you can do it.
By creating a trigger on other object for example create a trigger in contact object then the url of the current page shows
"https://ap1.salesforce.com/........./&entity=Contact" you have to change "entity=Attachment"
then the trigger will be created for attachment object.

Is it possible in Quickbase to create a URL to an Add Record page which partially fills in fields on the form?

I have a Quickbase app with a form for adding records. On an intranet page, I have a link to the add record form. When a user clicks on that link, Quickbase opens the add record form. However, I would like to supply values for some of the fields on the form as parameters in the URL.
I am aware of API_AddRecord, but as I understand it, that can only be used for completely filling in all required fields and saving the record. The disprec parameter can be used to see the record, but doesn't keep the record in add mode without committing the record.
What I need to do, is to fill in a couple of the fields, but keep the record in add mode, allowing the user to fill in a couple more fields. The URLs on the intranet page are actually generated in a grid, so there are some fields that are already known then the user clicks on the link, and I don't want the user to have to type them in again.
Can this be done? Thanks for your input.
Sure. Folks do this all the time. Use a=API_GenAddRecordForm&_fid_1="foo"&_fid_2="bar" where the number are the Field IDs of the fields you want to fill out, and "foo" and "bar" are the values you want to fill in.
