I have SQL server 2012 installed on a machine. I connected it successfully using Linked Server from the another machine. however when i tried to connected the same machine from another labtop which is on the same network i got the following error: please note that i have checked i can assess the sql server from SQL Server Management studio but it does not connected if i try to do it using linked server. I have checked tcp, named pipes are enable. Any suggestion
Error:
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [5].
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "MAL_SQL" returned message "Login timeout expired".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "MAL_SQL" returned message "A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.". (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
You can certainly disable Names Pipes (which I doubt you need, because this is 1990's technology that was predominantly used in IBM Token Ring networks). If you keep it enabled, just make sure that TCP/IP comes first in the order of client protocols (in the SQL Server Client Configuration Manager).
The fact that the client is even trying to use Named Pipes indicates that it could not reach your server via TCP/IP. Management Studio connects with the Native Client and not OLEDB.
Did you do what the error message says - check if your instance name is correct? You must have specified your linked server connection incorrectly.
I had exactly this problem and I got it solved by doing these steps:
1) Go to Network Connections
2) Click on Alt key and select Advanced and then Advanced Settings
3) On Adapters and Bindings tab and in the Connections section, make Ethernet the first connection
Voila!
For me, I had to do two things:
Make sure the SQL Server Browser Service was running on the target SQL Server
Allow TCP Port 1433 in the Firewall on the target SQL Server.

I setup 3 exactly similar Dell rack servers with RHEL 8.3 and Sql Server 15.0.4102.2. There was an existing windows sql server that I added to all 3 RHEL sql server instances as a linked server using the exact same script on all 3 RHEL sql servers. 2 of the servers work fine, the third fails with the following error message every time:
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
OLE DB provider "MSOLEDBSQL" for linked server "remserver" returned message "Login timeout expired".
OLE DB provider "MSOLEDBSQL" for linked server "remserver" returned message "A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.". (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
Port 1433 is open on all 3 and remember 2 of the exactly similar servers work perfectly fine, allowing me to connect to the remote windows linked server just fine.
What I am looking for is some advice as to where I should start debugging things. A weird thing is that I was able to run Red-Gate's SQL Pro Compare tool to deploy the database from remserver to the 3rd server just fine, so I think Sql Server on the 3rd server is installed correctly. I just cannot connect to the linked remserver from the 3rd sql server.
Thanks, Don Bouchard
Sorry, I was trying everything I could think of and I stumbled upon what it was which was because of a DNS misconfiguration. A simple ping to the remserver name showed me the problem.
Trying to connect to SQL Server from Excel by using >>Data tab, >>From other sources >> from SQL server. It came back with the attached message
I made sure named pipes and TCP/IP are enabled in the SQL server configuration manager. It works on my laptop. But my friend is trying to install in her laptop and it is not working. Appreciate any ideas you can share with us. We are doing Developer Edition, custom install of the database server. Double checked the instance name and made sure remote connection is allowed.
This is the error message I get
Unable to connect:
We encountered an error when trying to connect.
Details : Microsoft SQL: A network-related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL-SERVER. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify if the instance name is correct and SQL server is configured to allow remote connections. (Provided:Named Pipes Provider,error:40 Could not open a connection to SQL Server.
I get this error:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26, - Error Locating Server/Instance Specific) (Microsoft SQL Server)
I am trying to allow remote access to my local SQL Server database when the user is using my application on a different computer. I've been trying different approaches for weeks and nothing seems to work.
Here is a list of things that I have tried to do:
Changed server property settings to Allow remote connections to the server
Enable TCP/IP and listed 1433 port number in IPALL field
Created inbound rule for SQL Server program, SQL Browser, and port 1433
Temporarily disabled Windows firewall
Again, I know there is a lot of information surrounding this issue, but I feel like I've implemented every solution I could find and nothing is working.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Regarding #1, the allow remote connections to this server checkbox in SSMS does not actually allow remote client clients to connect despite the misleading name. Use SQL Server Configuration Manager (e.g. C:\Windows\SysWOW64\SQLServerManager15.msc, depending on your SQL version) instead. Right-click on SQL Server Network Configuration-->Protocols-->TCP/IP, select Enable, and restart the SQL Server service.
I have a very weird issue with SSAS Tabular connecting to a SQL Server source database. I've spent almost the entire day on this, and searched online in various ways to find a helpful answer, but none of the suggestions solved this mysterious problem for me.
It used to work fine, but I tried various connection settings (Windows vs SQL authentication, and different impersonation modes), but now I no longer can get it to work (even if I revert back to the previous bim file in source control).
When I process a table from the WORKSPACE database (through SSMS), it works. But when I process a table from the DEPLOYED database (still through SSMS), it does NOT work.
The connection I am using is:
-SQL Server Native Client 11.0
-Windows Authentication
-Impersonation mode of a Windows account (which has the appropriate permissions)
The source database is in a SQL Server database located on a different server (but in the same network).
I have searched everywhere online, but didn't find anything that could help me.
I have tried changing the connection driver (OLE DB Provider for SQL Server), and I have restarted the SSAS Tabular service.
The full error message I get when trying to process a table on the deployed database is:
Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: 'OLE DB or ODBC error: Login timeout expired; HYT00; A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.; 08001; Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [5]. ; 08001.
A connection could not be made to the data source with the Name of 'DataWarehouse'.
'.
In fact, after I tried a second time to restart the SSAS Tabular service, the error message I get after attempting to process a table is slightly different:
Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: 'OLE DB or ODBC error: A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.; 08001; SSL Provider: The requested security package does not exist
; 08001; Client unable to establish connection; 08001; Encryption not supported on the client.; 08001.
A connection could not be made to the data source with the Name of 'DataWarehouse'.
'.
According to your description, it seems to be related to connection problem. You need to check whether corresponding SQL server service and SSAS Service is running(check server which contains "DataWarehouse" is running and can be connected). You could go to "SQL Server Configuration Manager " to restart them.
In addition, you also need to make sure your current windows credential can access this database(if you use window credential). And check whether this server enable remote connect.

Check out surface area configuration. It gives options to do so.
Edit: Enable the Named pipes conenction as well. I guess you are using Named pipe to connect. Also check if the SQL server browser service is running on the DB server.
Check the Authentication mode settings. It may be set to Windows Authentication only, it needs to be in Mixed Mode to accept SQL usernames & passwords.
Also check the Server network configuration and make sure named pipes or tcp/ip are enabled add that the client is using the appropriate protocol.
If everythings are correct, you may want to connect with a upper version, for example you are in SQL Server 2005 and want to connect to SQL Server 2008.
Note that you cannot connect to a upper version.(only same version or older version are granted)
