MVVM-Block Tab key in WPF - wpf

I am working in WPF with MVVM. I implemented WPF Extended Toolkit and I use ChildWindow, when I open the ChildWindow the property IsModal is enabled. But this property does not block navigating with Tab.
I need block the navigating with Tab when the ChildWindos is open.
I tried with Focusable property but does not serve.

I understand your issue is with the tab in the background when show the ChildWindow.
You should try modifying the property KeyboardNavigation.TabNavigation of de Window.
If you use MVVM pattern do something like this in the XAML:

I tried it and it works fine. The tab is disabled in the background but not in the ChildWindow.

This is a known issue and the extended tool kit team needs to work on it.In the mean time if you still like to implement this feature using the ChildWindow I would suggest to subscribe to PreviewKeyDown event and manually change the behavior of the tab and arrow keys when the childwindow goes modal.

WPF & MVVM, right way to do it

So I am doing my first WPF MVVM app. Just learning the right principle of MVVM, but there are some things that I don't understand ...
I already have several user controls defined.
First question is what is better to use, UserControl or DataTemplates to change content of the MainWindow?
And how to make "Binding" in the "MainWindow.xaml" to change UserControl/DataTemplates when button is pressed?
For example, When "next" button is pressed then contents of main window disappear and content of user control comes on the screen of "MainWindow.xaml".
Maybe with "" binding, to disable it and enable it?
I found some example which function on DataTemplate A Simple MVVM Example. It helped me to implement some things, but I see some discussions over "UserControl" vs. "DataTemplate" and how to do it? So now I am confused :)
I recently made a WPF application with the MVVM pattern, and I did the following:
I have one 'Window', the mainwindow, and in this window all UserControls are loaded.
Every UserControl has a different Viewmodel, for examples a "GeneralSettingsUserControl" has a GeneralSettingsViewModel for validation and databinding.
Every UserControl has its own codebehind where data is bound to its ViewModel
The following code I found on the internet (I don't know the url anymore) but for me it did the trick to change de ContentControl in the mainwindow.
Switcher.cs:

PageContent is the name of the Grid where the main content is located. In every UserControl you can call the Switcher.switchPage(new UserControl) to change the content of the window. So when you click a button you can call this method.

Prevent control loosing focus when child gets focus

Ok so I have an issue where I have been trying to create a custom control in Silverlight. It is simply a button that when pressed opens a dropdown menu, however the dropdown menu is a child control. I have a property (isDropDownOpen) that controls whether the dropdown is open. I want that when the control loses focus that the property goes to false so implemented the following override in my class.

The problem is that the control looses focus when the child control gains focus so the menu closes as soon as I click on anything other than the button. I can’t really see how to work around this, any ideas?
EDIT: Essentially what I wish to do is check if the item is a child before actually changing the property. In wpf I would do something using 'IsChild()' or '.containsFocus()' however these do not appear to e available in silverlight...

I found the following link to be a solution to my issue.

The solution in my case was to find the ancestor of the control (going up to the window) and subscribing an event handler to close the menu when a click is registered on the window/ancestor. Works perfectly.

ShowDialog() behind the parent window

I am using ShowDialog() with WindowStyle = WindowStyle.SingleBorderWindow; to open a modal window in my WPF (MVVM) application, but it lets me navigate to parent window using the Windows taskbar (Windows 7).
I've found an answer here: WPF and ShowDialog() but it isn't suitable for me because I don't need an "always on top" tool window.

Try setting the Owner property of the dialog. That should work.

I had this problem but as the Window was being opened from a view model I didn't have a reference to the current window. To get round it I used this code:

You can use: myWindow.Owner = Application.Current.MainWindow;
However, this method causes problems if you have three windows open like this:

Then setting ChildWindow2.Owner = Application.Current.MainWindow will set the owner of the window to be its grandparent window, not parent window.
When the parent window makes (and shows) the child window, that is where you need to set the owner.

Much of the reason for the MVVM pattern is so that your interaction logic can be unit tested. For this reason, you should never directly open a window from the ViewModel, or you'll have dialogs popping up in the middle of your unit tests.
Instead, you should raise an event that the View will handle and open a dialog for you. For example, see this article on Interaction Requests: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg405494(v=pandp.40).aspx#sec12
The problem seems to be related to Window.Owner, and indeed if you judge by previous knowledge that you might have of the Win32 API and WinForms, a missing owner would be the typical cause of such a problem, but as many have pointed out, in the case of WPF that's not it. Microsoft keeps changing things to keep things interesting.
In WPF you can have a dialog with a specific owner and you can still have the dialog appear in the taskbar. Because why not. And that's the default behavior. Because why not. Their rationale is that modal dialogs are not kosher anymore, so you should not be using them; you should be using modeless dialogs, which make sense to show as separate taskbar icons, and in any case the user can then decide whether they want to see different app windows as separate icons, or whether they want to see them grouped.
So, they are trying to enforce this policy with complete disregard to anyone who might want to go against their guidelines and create a modal dialog. So, they force you to explicitly state that you do not want a taskbar icon to appear for your dialog.
To fix this problem, do the following in the constructor of your view class:
ShowInTaskbar = false;
(This may happen right after InitializeComponent();
This is equivalent to Xcalibur37's answer, though the way I figure things, since WPF forces you to have both a .cs file and a .xaml file, you might as well put things that are unlikely to change in the .cs file.
Add "ShowInTaskbar" and set it to false.
Even if this post is a bit old, I hope it is OK that I post my solution.
All the above results are known to me and did not exactly yield the desired result.

Lets say f2 is your window that you want to display on top of f1 :
f2.Owner = Window.GetWindow(this);
f2.ShowDialog();
That's it , I promise it will not disappear !

WPF close window when property in ViewModel changes

I was wondering if there was a way to close a window when a property in the view model changes. In my situation I have a login window with an Ok button bound to a LoginCommand so that the function Login executes when Ok is clicked. If the login is successful, I want the window to close.
Now I know I could do this by adding an event handler on my button, which calls a function like this:

Here's a similar question, which filled my need.
Basically, you use an attached property for your window, which binds to a bool? property on your VM. When the VM property is set to something non-null, the attached property sets the Window's DialogResult, which will automatically close the window.
If you want you can try this different approach.
You can do this by associating the OK button with a command. Create an event such as LoginSuccess and when then add a window.Close() to the list of event callback. Then you have only to raise the LoginSuccess event to close the windows.
In my opinion, this respect the MVVM pattern defining an event that can be used for other trigger and not only for closing windows.
You could do this fairly easily by creating an attached property or Behavior (from Blend SDK) that hooked into your Window.
I posted a sample behavior to the Expression Code Gallery which does something similar (though definitely different) - it prevents a window from being closed via a property on the VM. You could very easily adapt the code (included in the download) to just close the window on a property change.

Can't set focus to a child of UserControl

I have a UserControl which contains a TextBox. When my main window loads I want to set the focus to this textbox so I added Focusable="True" GotFocus="UC_GotFocus" to the UserControls definition and FocusManager.FocusedElement="{Binding ElementName=login}" to my main windows definition. In the UC_GotFocus method i simply call .Focus() on the control i want to focus on but this doesn't work.
All i need to do is have a TextBox in a UserControl receive focus when the application starts.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I recently fixed this problem for a login splash screen that is being displayed via a storyboard when the main window is first loaded.
I believe there were two keys to the fix. One was to make the containing element a focus scope. The other was to handle the Storyboard Completed event for the storyboard that was triggered by the window being loaded.
This storyboard makes the username and password canvas visible and then fades into being 100% opaque. The key is that the username control was not visible until the storyboard ran and therefore that control could not get keyboard focus until it was visible. What threw me off for awhile was that it had "focus" (i.e. focus was true, but as it turns out this was only logical focus) and I did not know that WPF had the concept of both logical and keyboard focus until reading Kent Boogaart's answer and looking at Microsoft's WPF link text
Once I did that the solution for my particular problem was straightforward:
1) Make the containing element a focus scope

Note that calling item.Focus() results in the call Keyboard.Focus(this), so you don't need to call this explicitly. See this question about the difference between Keyboard.Focus(item) and item.Focus.
Its stupid but it works:
Pop a thread that waits a while then comes back and sets the focus you want. It even works within the context of an element host.

Just recently I had a list-box that housed some TextBlocks. I wanted to be able to double click on the text block and have it turn into a TextBox, then focus on it and select all the text so the user could just start typing the new name (Akin to Adobe Layers)
Anyway, I was doing this with an event and it just wasn't working. The magic bullet for me here was making sure that I set the event to handled. I figure it was setting focus, but as soon as the event went down the path it was switching the logical focus.
The moral of the story is, make sure you're marking the event as handled, that might be your issue.

WPF supports two different flavors of focus:
Keyboard focus
Logical focus
The FocusedElement property gets or sets logical focus within a focus scope. I suspect your TextBox does have logical focus, but its containing focus scope is not the active focus scope. Ergo, it does not have keyboard focus.
So the question is, do you have multiple focus scopes in your visual tree?

They are all good to read, but the 3rd part specifically deals with setting focus to a UI element in a UserControl.
Set your user control to Focusable="True" (XAML)
Handle the GotFocus event on your control and call yourTextBox.Focus()
Handle the Loaded event on your window and call yourControl.Focus()
I have a sample app running with this solution as I type. If this does not work for you, there must be something specific to your app or environment that causes the problem. In your original question, I think the binding is causing the problem.

After having a 'WPF Initial Focus Nightmare' and based on some answers on stack, the following proved for me to be the best solution.
First, add your App.xaml OnStartup() the followings:

Then add the 'WindowLoaded' event also in App.xaml :

The threading issue must be use as WPF initial focus mostly fails due to some framework race conditions.

I've noticed a focus issue specifically related to hosting WPF UserControls within ElementHosts which are contained within a Form that is set as an MDI child via the MdiParent property.
I'm not sure if this is the same issue others are experiencing but you dig into the details by following the link below.

I don't like solutions with setting another tab scope for UserControl. In that case, you will have two different carets when navigating by keyboard: on the window and the another - inside user control. My solution is simply to redirect focus from user control to inner child control. Set user control focusable (because by default its false):

What did the trick for me was the FocusManager.FocusedElement attribute. I first tried to set it on the UserControl, but it didn't work.
So I tried putting it on the UserControl's first child instead:

I have user control - stack panel with two text boxes.The text boxes were added in contructor, not in the xaml. When i try to focus first text box, nothing happend.
The siggestion with Loaded event fix my problem. Just called control.Focus() in Loaded event and everthing.
Assuming you want to set focus for Username textbox, thus user can type in directly every time it shows up.
In Constructor of your control:

After trying combinations of the suggestions above, I was able to reliably assign focus to a desired text box on a child UserControl with the following. Basically, give focus to the child control and have the child UserControl give focus to its TextBox. The TextBox's focus statement returned true by itself, however did not yield the desired result until the UserControl was given focus as well. I should also note that the UserControl was unable to request focus for itself and had to be given by the Window.
For brevity I left out registering the Loaded events on the Window and UserControl.

I set it in the PageLoaded() or control loaded, but then I'm calling WCF async service and doing stuff that seems to lose the focus. I have to to set it at the end of all the stuff I do. That's fine and all, but sometimes I make changes to the code and then I forget that I'm also setting the cursor.
I had same problem with setting keyboard focus to canvas in WPF user control.
My solution
In XAML set element to Focusable="True"
In element_mousemove event create simple check:

In my case it works fine.
