How to pass output parameter to a Stored Procedure? - sql-server

I have written a stored procedure with the following format:
ALTER PROCEDURE usp_data_migration
(#sourceDatabase varchar(50),
#sourceTable varchar(50),
#targetDatabase varchar(50),
#targetTable varchar(50),
#finaloutput varchar(max) output)
AS
BEGIN
----Set of SQL Blocks
END
Then, I am executing the procedure:
DECLARE #finaloutput1 varchar(300)
EXEC usp_data_migration 'Yousuf', 'emp', '[City Branch]', 'emp_tgt', #finaloutput1 output
SELECT #finaloutput1
By executing this way I don't proper output.
When I execute this way:
DECLARE #finaloutput1 varchar(300)
EXEC usp_data_migration #sourceDatabase = 'Yousuf',
#sourceTable = 'emp',
#targetDatabase = '[City Branch]',
#targetTable = 'emp_tgt',
#finaloutput1 output
SELECT #finaloutput1
I get an error message saying:
Msg 119, Level 15, State 1, Line 41
Must pass parameter number 5 and subsequent parameters as '#name = value'. After the form '#name = value' has been used, all subsequent parameters must be passed in the form '#name = value'.
And if I removed my output parameter and execute the procedure, I get my desired output but I am not able to get my result as an output.
EXEC usp_data_migration #sourceDatabase = 'Yousuf',
#sourceTable = 'emp',
#targetDatabase = '[City Branch]',
#targetTable = 'emp_tgt'
What should I do?
Thanks in advance.

The error message is self-explanatory - you should name all of your parameters.
DECLARE #finaloutput1 varchar(300);
EXEC dbo.usp_data_migration -- always use schema prefix
#sourceDatabase = 'Yousuf',
#sourceTable = 'emp',
#targetDatabase = '[City Branch]',
#targetTable = 'emp_tgt',
#finaloutput = #finaloutput1 OUTPUT;
SELECT #finaloutput1;

You have to Select like this
Example 1
create procedure p1
(
#id INT,
#name varchar(20) OUTPUT,
#company varchar(20) OUTPUT
)
AS
BEGIN
Set #name = 'name'
Set #company = 'company'
select #name , #company from table1 where id = #id;
END
GO
Example 2
CREATE PROCEDURE Myproc
#parm varchar(10),
#parm1OUT varchar(30) OUTPUT,
#parm2OUT varchar(30) OUTPUT
AS
SELECT #parm1OUT='parm 1' + #parm
SELECT #parm2OUT='parm 2' + #parm
GO
DECLARE #SQLString NVARCHAR(500)
DECLARE #ParmDefinition NVARCHAR(500)
DECLARE #parmIN VARCHAR(10)
DECLARE #parmRET1 VARCHAR(30)
DECLARE #parmRET2 VARCHAR(30)
SET #parmIN=' returned'
SET #SQLString=N'EXEC Myproc #parm,
#parm1OUT OUTPUT, #parm2OUT OUTPUT'
SET #ParmDefinition=N'#parm varchar(10),
#parm1OUT varchar(30) OUTPUT,
#parm2OUT varchar(30) OUTPUT'
EXECUTE sp_executesql
#SQLString,
#ParmDefinition,
#parm=#parmIN,
#parm1OUT=#parmRET1 OUTPUT,#parm2OUT=#parmRET2 OUTPUT
SELECT #parmRET1 AS "parameter 1", #parmRET2 AS "parameter 2"
go
drop procedure Myproc
Please refer more here

Simple Example:
create procedure proc2 #var int out,#var2 varchar(10) out
as
begin
set #var=(select max(id) from customer);
set #var2=(select name from customer where id=#var);
end
declare #maxid int;
declare #maxname varchar(10);
exec proc2 #maxid out,#maxname out;
select #maxid,#maxname;

Problem in Procedure with 2 insert and pass table name as parameter

I wrote a procedure in order to insert the same row into 2 different tables (one table for the sender of the message and an other for the receiver)
CREATE PROCEDURE InsertMsg
#tablesrc VARCHAR(50),
#tabeldest VARCHAR(50),
#src VARCHAR(50),
#dest VARCHAR(50),
#contenu VARCHAR(500)
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;
DECLARE #Sql NVARCHAR(MAX);
SET #Sql = N'INSERT INTO '+ QUOTENAME(#tablesrc)+' (src,dest,contenu,dateEnvoi,Vu) values (#src,#dest,#contenu,GETDATE(),0)'
+ N'INSERT INTO '+ QUOTENAME(#tabeldest)+' (src,dest,contenu,dateEnvoi,Vu) values (#src,#dest,#contenu,GETDATE(),0)'
EXECUTE sp_executesql #Sql
END
Execution
execute InsertMsg 'MSG_RS_80f355a2', 'MSG_RS_80f355a2', 'RS_80f355a2', 'RS_80f355a2', 'test procedure'
I get this error:
Must declare the scalar variable "#src"
You aren't passing the values of your variables #src,#dest and #contenu to sp_executesql. You need to parametrise the statement:
EXECUTE sp_executesql #Sql,
N'#srv varchar(50), #dest varchar(50), #contenu varchar(500)',
#srv = #srv,
#dest = #dest,
#contenu = #contenu;

How to get the last identity value using sp_executesql in StoredProcedure?

I am inserting records using stored procedure and sp_executesql. Once I insert record using sp_executesql, i need the last inserted identity field value on that session.
ALTER proc [dbo].[spHoldTransaction]
#RegisterNo int,
#StoreID int,
#Department varchar(50),
#TransactionDateFrom date,
#TransactionDateTo date,
#Comment Varchar(50)
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE #RegisterID int;
DECLARE #DatabaseName varchar(15);
DECLARE #Batch int;
SELECT #RegisterID=ID FROM Register WHERE Register.Number = #RegisterNo;
SELECT #Batch = BatchNumber From Batch WHERE Status = 0 and RegisterID = #RegisterID
SET #DatabaseName = 'xxx'
SELECT #Department=''''+REPLACE(#Department,',',''',''')+''''
DECLARE #Qry nvarchar(MAX);
DECLARE #ParamDefinition nvarchar(MAX);
SET #ParamDefinition = N'#comment nvarchar(50),#StoreID int,#Batch int'
SET #Qry = '
INSERT INTO '+#DatabaseName+'.dbo.TransactionHold
(
[StoreID]
,[HoldComment]
,[BatchNumber]
,[ShippingNotes]
)
SELECT
#StoreID AS [StoreID]
,#Comment AS [HoldComment]
,#Batch AS [BatchNumber]
,'''' AS [ShippingNotes];
'
EXECUTE sp_executesql #Qry, #ParamDefinition, #Comment, #StoreID, #Batch
SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY()
END
When I execute this above stored procedure, it's return empty. But TransactionHold has identity column Id
Try retrieving the identity inside the same scope of the execute sql procedure and return the value as an OUT parameter. Do these changes:
SET #ParamDefinition = N'#comment nvarchar(50),#StoreID int,#Batch int, #identity int out'
SET #Qry = '
INSERT INTO '+#DatabaseName+'.dbo.TransactionHold
(
[StoreID]
,[HoldComment]
,[BatchNumber]
,[ShippingNotes]
)
SELECT
#StoreID AS [StoreID]
,#Comment AS [HoldComment]
,#Batch AS [BatchNumber]
,'''' AS [ShippingNotes];
SET #identity = ##IDENTITY
'
DECLARE #identity INT
EXECUTE sp_executesql #Qry, #ParamDefinition, #Comment, #StoreID, #Batch, #identity OUT
SELECT #identity

Assign result of dynamic SQL in Procedure A to variable defined in Procedure B

I am struggling with getting the result back for a dynamic query that is being called from a different stored procedures. Here is what I am trying to achieve.
Procedure A:
CREATE PROCEDURE A
#C1 int, #F1 int
AS
SET #SQL = 'SELECT ID FROM EMPLOYEE_TABLE WHERE '+#C1+' = +'#F1'
EXEC(#SQL)
Procedure B:
CREATE PROCEDURE B
#C1 int, #F1 int
AS
DECLARE #Result INT
EXEC #Result = A #C1, #F1
I need to run stored procedure B and let it return back to me the result. I just cannot seem to get the correct result back. How can I fix this problem?
You can try the following two store procedures query statement
Procedure A:
ALTER PROCEDURE A
#C1 VARCHAR(250),
#F1 int
AS
DECLARE #SQL AS VARCHAR(MAX);
SET #SQL = 'SELECT ID FROM PatientTest WHERE '+ #C1+' = ' + CONVERT(VARCHAR(12),#F1)
EXEC(#SQL)
Procedure B:
ALTER PROCEDURE B
#C1 VARCHAR(250),
#F1 int
AS
Declare #Result int
EXEC #Result = A #C1, #F1
If you will face further problem, please let me know in comment. Thanks.
Try these two. I think you will meet your expected result.
Procedure 1
CREATE PROCEDURE GetValue
#ColumnName VARCHAR(250),
#ColumnValue VARCHAR(250)
AS
DECLARE #SQL AS VARCHAR(MAX);
SET #SQL = 'SELECT Email FROM Person WHERE '+ #ColumnName + ' = ''' + #ColumnValue + ''''
EXEC (#SQL)
-- EXEC GetValue 'MobileNo', '+8801919111333'
Procedure 2
CREATE PROCEDURE ReturnValue
#ColumnName VARCHAR(250),
#ColumnValue VARCHAR(250)
AS
DECLARE #Result VARCHAR(250)
EXEC #Result = GetValue #ColumnName, #ColumnValue
-- EXEC ReturnValue 'MobileNo', '+8801919111333'

Executing Stored Procedure

I cant execute my SP ( Example when i type spGetNamebyID 1)
Here is my code
alter proc spGetNameByID
#ID int,
#Name varchar(50) output,
#Gender varchar (50) output
as
begin
Select #Name = Name, #Gender = Gender from tblEmployee where ID = #ID
end
Declare #Name varchar(50), #Gender varchar(50)
Execute spGetNameByID 2, #Name out, #Gender out
Print 'Name is ' + #Name + ' Gender ' + #Gender
I get this error message
Msg 201, Level 16, State 4, Procedure spGetNameByID, Line 0 Procedure
or function 'spGetNameByID' expects parameter '#Name', which was not
supplied.
Try this
Declare #Name varchar(50), #Gender varchar(50)
exec spGetNameByID #ID = 2, #Name = #Name output, #Gender = #Gender output
You can also right click on the Stored Procedure in Sql Management Studio, execute the procedure and it will show you the query.
I think I got it. You must include Declare and print
Declare #Name1 varchar(50), #Gender1 varchar(50)
Execute spGetNameByID 2, #Name1 out, #Gender1 out
Print 'Name is ' + #Name1 + ' Gender ' + #Gender1
Try writing your execute line like this
Execute spGetNameByID #ID = 2
and leave out
, #Name = #Name output, #Gender = #Gender output

Execute stored procedure with an Output parameter?

I have a stored procedure that I am trying to test. I am trying to test it through SQL Management Studio. In order to run this test I enter ...
exec my_stored_procedure 'param1Value', 'param2Value'
The final parameter is an output parameter. However, I do not know how to test a stored procedure with output parameters.
How do I run a stored procedure with an output parameter?
The easy way is to right-click on the procedure in Sql Server Management Studio (SSMS), select 'Execute stored procedure..." and add values for the input parameters as prompted. SSMS will then generate the code to run the procedure in a new query window, and execute it for you. You can study the generated code to see how it is done.
you can do this :
declare #rowCount int
exec yourStoredProcedureName #outputparameterspOf = #rowCount output
Return val from procedure
ALTER PROCEDURE testme #input VARCHAR(10),
#output VARCHAR(20) output
AS
BEGIN
IF #input >= '1'
BEGIN
SET #output = 'i am back';
RETURN;
END
END
DECLARE #get VARCHAR(20);
EXEC testme
'1',
#get output
SELECT #get
Check this, where the first two parameters are input parameters and the 3rd is an Output parameter in the Procedure definition.
DECLARE #PK_Code INT;
EXEC USP_Validate_Login 'ID', 'PWD', #PK_Code OUTPUT
SELECT #PK_Code
Procedure Example :
Create Procedure [dbo].[test]
#Name varchar(100),
#ID int Output
As
Begin
SELECT #ID = UserID from tbl_UserMaster where Name = #Name
Return;
END
How to call this procedure
Declare #ID int
EXECUTE [dbo].[test] 'Abhishek',#ID OUTPUT
PRINT #ID
From https://learn.microsoft.com/en-US/sql/relational-databases/system-stored-procedures/sp-executesql-transact-sql (originally http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262499)
CREATE PROCEDURE Myproc
#parm varchar(10),
**#parm1OUT varchar(30) OUTPUT**,
**#parm2OUT varchar(30) OUTPUT**
AS
SELECT #parm1OUT='parm 1' + #parm
SELECT #parm2OUT='parm 2' + #parm
GO
DECLARE #SQLString NVARCHAR(500)
DECLARE #ParmDefinition NVARCHAR(500)
DECLARE #parmIN VARCHAR(10)
DECLARE #parmRET1 VARCHAR(30)
DECLARE #parmRET2 VARCHAR(30)
SET #parmIN=' returned'
SET #SQLString=N'EXEC Myproc #parm,
#parm1OUT OUTPUT, #parm2OUT OUTPUT'
SET #ParmDefinition=N'#parm varchar(10),
#parm1OUT varchar(30) OUTPUT,
#parm2OUT varchar(30) OUTPUT'
EXECUTE sp_executesql
#SQLString,
#ParmDefinition,
#parm=#parmIN,
#parm1OUT=#parmRET1 OUTPUT,#parm2OUT=#parmRET2 OUTPUT
SELECT #parmRET1 AS "parameter 1", #parmRET2 AS "parameter 2"
GO
DROP PROCEDURE Myproc
First, declare the output variable:
DECLARE #MyOutputParameter INT;
Then, execute the stored procedure, and you can do it without parameter's names, like this:
EXEC my_stored_procedure 'param1Value', #MyOutputParameter OUTPUT
or with parameter's names:
EXEC my_stored_procedure #param1 = 'param1Value', #myoutput = #MyOutputParameter OUTPUT
And finally, you can see the output result by doing a SELECT:
SELECT #MyOutputParameter
With this query you can execute any stored procedure (with or without an output parameter):
DECLARE #temp varchar(100)
EXEC my_sp
#parameter1 = 1,
#parameter2 = 2,
#parameter3 = #temp output,
#parameter4 = 3,
#parameter5 = 4
PRINT #temp
Here the datatype of #temp should be the same as #parameter3 within your Stored Procedure.
How about this? It's extremely simplified:
The SPROC below has an output parameter of #ParentProductID
We want to select the value of the output of #ParentProductID into #MyParentProductID which is declared below.
Here's the Code:
declare #MyParentProductID int
exec p_CheckSplitProduct #ProductId = 4077, #ParentProductID = #MyParentProductID output
select #MyParentProductID
Try this; it's working fine for the multiple output parameter:
CREATE PROCEDURE [endicia].[credentialLookup]
#accountNumber varchar(20),
#login varchar(20) output,
#password varchar(50) output
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;
SELECT top 1 #login = [carrierLogin],#password = [carrierPassword]
FROM [carrier_account] where carrierLogin = #accountNumber
order by clientId, id
END
Try for the result:
SELECT *FROM [carrier_account]
DECLARE #login varchar(20),#password varchar(50)
exec [endicia].[credentialLookup] '588251',#login OUTPUT,#password OUTPUT
SELECT 'login'=#login,'password'=#password
CREATE PROCEDURE DBO.MY_STORED_PROCEDURE
(#PARAM1VALUE INT,
#PARAM2VALUE INT,
#OUTPARAM VARCHAR(20) OUT)
AS
BEGIN
SELECT * FROM DBO.PARAMTABLENAME WHERE PARAM1VALUE=#PARAM1VALUE
END
DECLARE #OUTPARAM2 VARCHAR(20)
EXEC DBO.MY_STORED_PROCEDURE 1,#OUTPARAM2 OUT
PRINT #OUTPARAM2
Here is the stored procedure
create procedure sp1
(
#id as int,
#name as nvarchar(20) out
)
as
begin
select #name=name from employee where id=#id
end
And here is the way to execute the procedure
declare #name1 nvarchar(10)
exec sp1 1,#name1 out
print #name1
Please check below example to get output variable value by executing a stored procedure.
DECLARE #return_value int,
#Ouput1 int,
#Ouput2 int,
#Ouput3 int
EXEC #return_value = 'Your Sp Name'
#Param1 = value1,
#Ouput1 = #Ouput1 OUTPUT,
#Ouput2 = #Ouput2 OUTPUT,
#Ouput3 = #Ouput3 OUTPUT
SELECT #Ouput1 as N'#Ouput1',
#Ouput2 as N'#Ouput2',
#Ouput3 as N'#Ouput3'
Here is the definition of the stored_proc:
create proc product(#a int,#b int)
as
return #a * #b
And, this is executing it from Python:
conn = pyodbc.connect('...')
cursor = conn.cursor()
sql = """
SET NOCOUNT ON
declare #r float
exec #r=dbo.product 5,4
select #r
"""
result = cursor.execute(sql)
print (result.fetchall())
