I'm building a WPF application and I have a control template defined in App.XAML for a combobox.
When I start the application, the first combo box that is rendered does not use the style defined in the control template while all other do. Also, the first combo box that I open has an unstyled first item while the rest of the items in that combo box and others are styled.
What am I missing?
Here's the app.xaml:

Please put your ComboBox style in a separate ResourceDictionary, let say ComboBox.xaml and merge this ComboBox.xaml to the App.xaml.
<Application.Resources>
<ResourceDictionary>
<ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
<ResourceDictionary Source="ComboBox.xaml"/>
</ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
</ResourceDictionary>
</Application.Resources>
I would suggest to create a separate ResourceDictionary for every control you create your own Template. This way it would be easy to manage your resources.

I modified a combobox style and the style is listed below. It works fine, however, the style applies to all comboboxes in my project. In other words, when I pull a combobox from the toolbox, it is automatically styled. What I'd like to do is only style certain comboboxes with the style - not all. Of course I would have to apply the style to each control using a key name. My question is, how can the style be modified so I can refer to it by a key name "myComboBox". Thanks for your help.

When you assign a x:Key like that it create an implicit style. What you are wanting is an explicit style.
What you need to do is change this line
<Style x:Key="{x:Type ComboBox}" TargetType="{x:Type ComboBox}">
to be
<Style x:Key="myComboBoxStyle" TargetType="{x:Type ComboBox}">
In addition you have an implicit style on ComboBoxItem as well. You will want to change this:
to be:
<Style x:Key="myComboBoxItem" TargetType="{x:Type ComboBoxItem}">
Finally you will want to set your ComboBoxItem style to be the item style for your ComboBox.
Add this to the ComboBox style.
<Setter Property="ItemContainerStyle" Value="{StaticResource myComboBoxItem}"/>
Give the Style a unique x:Key:
<Style x:Key="myComboBoxStyle" TargetType="{x:Type ComboBoxItem}">
You can then apply it to a ComboBox using the StaticResource markup extension:
<ComboBox Style="{StaticResource myComboBoxStyle}">
</ComboBox>
Your problem is the key you're using.
This:
x:Key="{x:Type ComboBox}"
Change that to some other string that doesn't involve any curly braces or x:type.

There are some minor adjustments left but apart from that it works fine. But i'm having one problem, I need to make the toplevelitems underlined during mouseover. I've been searching for information about this for a long time and i've come up with nothing so far.
You can just use the MenuItem.Header property to add a TextBlock with an underline to the menu item header section:
<MenuItem>
<MenuItem.Header>
<TextBlock Text="{Binding YourHeaderProperty}" TextDecorations="Underline" />
</MenuItem.Header>
</MenuItem>
It's worth pointing out that you may confuse your users when you do this, because underlined text usually means that it is a hyper link.
UPDATE >>>
You just need to rearrange the code a little and add a DataTrigger to make the change:
<MenuItem>
<MenuItem.Header>
<TextBlock Text="rtuwruhey5uje5yu">
<TextBlock.Style>
<Style TargetType="{x:Type TextBlock}">
<Setter Property="TextDecorations" Value="None" />
<Style.Triggers>
<DataTrigger Binding="{Binding IsMouseOver, RelativeSource={
RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type MenuItem}}}"
Value="True">
<Setter Property="TextDecorations" Value="Underline" />
</DataTrigger>
</Style.Triggers>
</Style>
</TextBlock.Style>
</TextBlock>
</MenuItem.Header>
</MenuItem>
I want to change the color permanently of the box(title box of combo box in which arrow button is displayed) in combobox in which title of the combobox is displayed,how to do this tried lot many things but it is not that what i want
It is quite simple. You just have to add resources and consume resources.
try this :
<Window.Resources>
<Style x:Key="stylecombo" TargetType="ComboBox">
<Setter Property="ComboBox.Background"
Value="Beige" />
</Style>
</Window.Resources>
<ComboBox Style="{StaticResource stylecombo}" Height="25" Width="100" Margin="23,22,285,262" IsEditable="True" Text="Your Choice...">
<ComboBoxItem Content="1"></ComboBoxItem>
<ComboBoxItem Content="2"></ComboBoxItem>
</ComboBox>
If you are using usercontrol, use UserControl.Resources instead of Window.Resources.
Hope this will help you.!! :)
This is a matter of either Retemplating the combobox control, or Get the TemplatedChild elements of the control..
The first one is the one i use myself the most, so that I have something consistent throughout my application.

The template of combo box says that its background is transparent, just add a panel/grid behind it and change the color of panel/grid to desired color, it will change to that color.
You will have to create a grid, set its background color, bring it over the combo box control, set its height and width to match with combo box, and right click the combo box, go to order, select bring to front.
This will do the trick.
Works with me :)
I have created a custom ComboBox in WPF
<!-- Combobox template -->
<ControlTemplate x:Key="CustomComboBoxToggleButton" TargetType="ToggleButton">
<Grid>
<Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<ColumnDefinition/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="20"/>
</Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<Border x:Name="Border" Grid.ColumnSpan="2" CornerRadius="3" Background="{StaticResource CustomDarkBlue}" BorderBrush="{StaticResource CustomWhite}" BorderThickness="2"/>
<Border x:Name="Border2" Grid.Column="0" CornerRadius="3,0,0,3" Margin="1" Background="{StaticResource CustomBackground}" BorderBrush="{StaticResource CustomWhite}" BorderThickness="1,1,2,1"/>
<Path x:Name="Arrow" Grid.Column="1" Fill="{StaticResource CustomGlyph}" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Data="M 0 0 L 4 4 L 8 0 Z"/>
</Grid>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="ToggleButton.IsMouseOver" Value="True">
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background" Value="{StaticResource CustomDarkBlue}"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="ToggleButton.IsChecked" Value="True">
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background" Value="{StaticResource CustomDarkBlue}"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="False">
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="BorderBrush" Value="{StaticResource CustomGray}"/>
<Setter TargetName="Border2" Property="BorderBrush" Value="{StaticResource CustomGray}"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{StaticResource CustomGray}"/>
<Setter TargetName="Arrow" Property="Fill" Value="{StaticResource CustomGray}"/>
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
<!-- Combobox -->
<Style x:Key="RoundedComboBox" TargetType="{x:Type ComboBox}">
<Setter Property="SnapsToDevicePixels" Value="True"/>
<Setter Property="OverridesDefaultStyle" Value="True"/>
<Setter Property="ScrollViewer.HorizontalScrollBarVisibility" Value="Auto"/>
<Setter Property="ScrollViewer.VerticalScrollBarVisibility" Value="Auto"/>
<Setter Property="ScrollViewer.CanContentScroll" Value="True"/>

<Setter Property="Height" Value="21"/>
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="14"/>
<Setter Property="FocusVisualStyle" Value="{x:Null}"/>
<Setter Property="Template">

<ControlTemplate TargetType="ComboBox">
<Grid>

<Grid Name="DropDown" SnapsToDevicePixels="True" MinWidth="{TemplateBinding ActualWidth}" MaxHeight="{TemplateBinding MaxDropDownHeight}">
<Border x:Name="DropDownBorder" Background="{StaticResource CustomBackground}" BorderThickness="2" BorderBrush="{StaticResource CustomWhite}"/>
<ScrollViewer Margin="4,6,4,6" SnapsToDevicePixels="True">
<StackPanel IsItemsHost="True" KeyboardNavigation.DirectionalNavigation="Contained"/>
</ScrollViewer>
</Grid>
</Popup>
</Grid>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="HasItems" Value="False">
<Setter TargetName="DropDownBorder" Property="MinHeight" Value="95"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="False">
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{StaticResource CustomGray}"/>

</Trigger>

</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
This is then applied to a ComboBox
<ComboBox Grid.Column="0" x:Name="cboChild" Margin="140,65,0,0" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource GroupedData}}" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource AccountTemplate}" SelectedValue="{Binding Source={StaticResource Item}, Path=child}" SelectedValuePath="ID" Width="150" Style="{StaticResource RoundedComboBox}" HorizontalAlignment="Left" VerticalAlignment="Top">
<ComboBox.GroupStyle>
<GroupStyle HeaderTemplate="{StaticResource GroupHeader}"/>
</ComboBox.GroupStyle>
</ComboBox>
The following is found in Window.Resources
<Window.Resources>
<CollectionViewSource Source="{Binding ChildAccounts}" x:Key="GroupedData">
<CollectionViewSource.GroupDescriptions>
<PropertyGroupDescription PropertyName="group"/>
</CollectionViewSource.GroupDescriptions>
</CollectionViewSource>
<DataTemplate x:Key="GroupHeader">
<TextBlock Text="{Binding group}" Margin="0" Foreground="{StaticResource CustomWhite}"/>
</DataTemplate>
<DataTemplate x:Key="AccountTemplate">
<TextBlock Text="{Binding comment}" Margin="0" Foreground="{StaticResource CustomWhite}"/>
</DataTemplate>
</Window.Resources>
Basically grouping works as it should when the RoundedComboBox style is NOT applied (ie. to the default ComboBox) but whenever the style is applied the drop-down popup is empty
Help!!
Thanks
Andy
Found the answer..... Use <ItemsPresenter ...> instead of <StackPanel ...>
Thanks sa_ddam213 for your helpful advice above regarding the binding.
In the second code there is a textBlock with the text "Mina övningar"
How can I change the text color to black when the tabItem is selected?
style:
<Style TargetType="{x:Type TabItem}">
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type TabItem}">
<Grid>
<Border Name="Border" Background="Transparent" BorderBrush="Transparent" BorderThickness="0" Margin="0,0,0,13" CornerRadius="5" >
<ContentPresenter x:Name="ContentSite" VerticalAlignment="Top" HorizontalAlignment="Center" ContentSource="Header" Margin="9"/>
</Border>
</Grid>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="Black"/>
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background">
<Setter.Value>
<LinearGradientBrush EndPoint="0.5,1" StartPoint="0.5,0">
<GradientStop Color="#FFF9F7FD" Offset="0.432" />
<GradientStop Color="#FFECF7FD" Offset="0.433" />
</LinearGradientBrush>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
<Setter TargetName="ContentSite" Property="Margin" Value="9,12,9,9" />
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="False">
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background" Value="Transparent" />
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
tabitem:
<TabItem Background="White">
<TabItem.Header>
<StackPanel Orientation="Vertical">
<Image Height="32" Source="/Glosboken;component/Images/library bookmarked.png" />
<TextBlock Text="Mina övningar" Margin="0,0,0,0" VerticalAlignment="Center" Foreground="White" />
</StackPanel>
</TabItem.Header>
<Grid>
<ListBox Height="216" Name="bookslist" VerticalAlignment="Top" Background="White" BorderBrush="White" Foreground="White" SelectedIndex="0" Margin="0,0,129,0" />
</Grid>
</TabItem>
One solution is to use a separate style for this situation:
<Style x:Key="TabItemText" TargetType="{x:Type TextBlock}">
<Style.Triggers>
<DataTrigger Binding="{Binding IsSelected, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType=TabItem}}" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="Black"/>
</DataTrigger>
<DataTrigger Binding="{Binding IsSelected, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType=TabItem}}" Value="False">
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="White"/>
</DataTrigger>
</Style.Triggers>
</Style>
and then replace:
Foreground="White"
with:
Style="{StaticResource TabItemText}"
in the TextBlock.
I did this by naming the ContentPresenter and targeting it in the trigger.
This way it keeps everything for the TabItem style in one place.
Complete Example:
<Window x:Class="TabControlText.MainWindow"
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
Title="MainWindow" Height="350" Width="525">
<Window.Resources>
<Style x:Key="TabItemStyle1" TargetType="{x:Type TabItem}">
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type TabItem}">
<Border x:Name="Border" BorderThickness="1,1,1,0" CornerRadius="5,5,0,0"
Padding="25,5,25,5" Margin="0,0,0,0" BorderBrush="Gainsboro">
<ContentPresenter x:Name="ContentSite" ContentSource="Header" />
</Border>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="True">
<Setter Property="TextElement.Foreground" TargetName="ContentSite" Value="White"/>
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background" Value="Black"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="False">
<Setter Property="TextElement.Foreground" TargetName="ContentSite" Value="Black"/>
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background" Value="White" />
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
</Window.Resources>
<Grid>
<TabControl>
<TabItem Header="Tab 1" Style="{DynamicResource TabItemStyle1}" />
<TabItem Header="Tab 2" Style="{DynamicResource TabItemStyle1}" />
<TabItem Header="Tab 3" Style="{DynamicResource TabItemStyle1}" />
<TabItem Header="Tab 4" Style="{DynamicResource TabItemStyle1}" />
</TabControl>
</Grid>
I extended Scott Solmer's great code by making it a resource dictionary because I needed this TabItem styling application wide.
So add new TabItemStyles.xaml under the Resources Dictionary folder which was called "Resources" :
<ResourceDictionary xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml">
<Style x:Key="ColoredTabsStyle" TargetType="{x:Type TabItem}">
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type TabItem}">
<Border x:Name="Border" BorderThickness="1,1,1,0" CornerRadius="5,5,0,0"
Padding="25,5,25,5" Margin="0,0,0,0" BorderBrush="Gainsboro">
<ContentPresenter x:Name="ContentSite" ContentSource="Header" />
</Border>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="True">
<Setter Property="TextElement.Foreground" TargetName="ContentSite" Value="White" />
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background" Value="Black" />
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="False">
<Setter Property="TextElement.Foreground" TargetName="ContentSite" Value="Black" />
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background" Value="White" />
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
I changed my app.xaml to know about the new resource dictionary. WARNING - adjust the source and component locations for your application:
<ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
<ResourceDictionary Source="pack://application:,,,/TruPredict;component/Resources/TabItemStyles.xaml" />
</ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
Then I used style in the actual screen everywhere in the application I needed. Unlike Scott, I prefer using StaticResource rather than DynamicResource unless I have to.:
<TabControl>
<TabItem Header="Tab1" Style="{StaticResource ColoredTabsStyle}">
<TabItem Header="Tab2" Style="{StaticResource ColoredTabsStyle}">
<TabItem Header="Tab3" Style="{StaticResource ColoredTabsStyle}">
<TabControl>
