How can I pass a parameter to an ng-click function? - angularjs

I have a function in my controller that looks like the following:
AngularJS:
$scope.toggleClass = function(class){
$scope.class = !$scope.class;
}
I want to keep it general by passing the name of the class that I want to toggle:
<div class="myClass">stuff</div>
<div ng-click="toggleClass(myClass)"></div>
But myClass is not being passed to the angular function. How can I get this to work? The above code works if I write it like this:
$scope.toggleClass = function(){
$scope.myClass = !$scope.myClass;
}
But, this is obviously not general. I don't want to hard-code in the class named myClass.

In the function
$scope.toggleClass = function(class){
$scope.class = !$scope.class;
}
$scope.class doesn't have anything to do with the paramter class. It's literally a property on $scope called class. If you want to access the property on $scope that is identified by the variable class, you'll need to use the array-style accessor:
$scope.toggleClass = function(class){
$scope[class] = !$scope[class];
}
Note that this is not Angular specific; this is just how JavaScript works. Take the following example:
> var obj = { a: 1, b: 2 }
> var a = 'b'
> obj.a
1
> obj[a] // the same as saying: obj['b']
2
Also, the code
<div ng-click="toggleClass(myClass)"></div>
makes the assumption that there is a variable on your scope, e.g. $scope.myClass that evaluates to a string that has the name of the property you want to access. If you literally want to pass in the string myClass, you'd need
<div ng-click="toggleClass('myClass')"></div>
The example doesn't make it super clear which you're looking for (since there is a class named myClass on the top div).

ES6 class calling a method within a class with bind vs call?

I have a class written in ES6 and I have a directive "action" which needs to access a controller value called "selected". This controller value "selected" is updated by another directive "grid". ( 2 way binding)
I need to pass "selected" value from the controller that has been updated by Directive "grid" to Directive "actions" on-select . I have tried to pass by doing a "bind" but i get an type error as "cannot read actionHandler of undefined"
I am not sure what is the best way to handle this , such that when the "selected" value has been updated by the "grid" directive, the actionEvent is triggered with the updated value from the controller. The directives are working correctly and i am able to see that it breaks on breakpoints.
Here is what i have in HTML

First of all, don't be confused between .bind() and .call().
First returns a new function instance, that can be called later, but with preserved this.
Second calls function immediately, but modifies context of this only for this call.

You are passing a reference to actionEvent method. At the moment of call, the reference to original controller object is already lost.
To preserve the reference, you need to save it first in constructor

angularjs change ng-repeat variable and call function

I am trying to toggle a class when clicking on the Save button but also call a function. I am using coffeescript. The function gets called but the variable never gets set to false.

I assume that your small example is missing all kinds of data.
I would recommend either using controllerAs, for example:
<div ng-controller="myController as vm">
and then changing your bindings to vm.setListFocus.
Or another option would be to change your controller code like so:
function myController($scope) {
$scope.list = { focus: false };
}
And change your binding to list.focus instead. This will solve your scope inheritance problems.
You could begin someFunction() with toggling the value of setListFocus
$scope.someFunction = function(){
$scope.setListFocus = !$scope.setListFocus;
// ... rest of someFunction()
}
And then the angular template would be just this:
a(ng-click="someFunction()")
Another thing you could do is set up a toggle ListFocus function, that can take an optional callback parameter. This means you can toggle the listfocus between true or false, and optionally execute another function. I'm not going to continue answering in coffeescript because I'm not that familiar, and not everyone is.

angular-dialog-service update parent scope data object

I've a template:

I copy the object to work on a different object (I don't want data to be updated if not saved)

Ok, the problem is that meow.accepted_tp in the parent scope doesn't get updated. If I do

Its title gets updated. There is clearly something wrong with the prototypal inheritance, I know that in order to get variables updated they should be properties of an object, but tp is already passed as an object property (of the data object). Any ideas?

After re-reading the angular-dialog-service docs, you can pass a result back using modalInstance. It sounds like this is what you want to do.
The reason your binding isn't working is because you're changing the object reference from a child scope, rather than a property on the object bound (which is why data.tp.title = 'meow' works).
Anyway, for your case, try this:

Update: ECMAScript 2015 adds support for => functions. => functions are more compact and do not change the this pointer from their defining scope, so you may not need to use bind() as often. So, what does that mean?!
Well, let's take a function that looks like this :
var logProp = function(prop) {
console.log(this[prop]);
};
Now, let's take an object that looks like this :
var Obj = {
x : 5,
y : 10
};
We can bind our function to our object like this :
Obj.log = logProp.bind(Obj);
Now, we can run Obj.log anywhere in our code :

Obj.log('y'); // Output : 10
This works, because we bound the value of this to our object Obj.

Unlike with Obj.log, we do not have to pass x or y, because we passed those values when we did our binding.
Variables has local and global scopes. Let's suppose that we have two variables with the same name. One is globally defined and the other is defined inside a function closure and we want to get the variable value which is inside the function closure. In that case we use this bind() method. How does this work in JS anyway
The value of this in javascript is dependent always depends on what Object the function is called. The value of this always refers to the object left of the dot from where is the function is called. In case of the global scope this is window (or global in nodeJS). Only call, apply and bind can alter the this binding differently. Here is an example to show how the this keyword works:

bind() create a new function, a new reference at a function it returns to you.

Callbacks can't have arguments.

Allow dynamic parameter name for Angular ngResource call

I'm trying to use a custom Angular directive with a custom attribute, i.e. :filterBy=:filter. This is being done with a custom directive like this:
<foo filterBy=location filter=ABC></foo>
The service:
function Foo($resource) {
return $resource(base + 'Foo');
}
The ngResource call:
var filterBy = attrs.filterBy;
var getSegments = Foo.get({filterBy: attrs.filter, limit: attrs.limit, offset: attrs.offset});
returns this:
http://localhost:8000/base/Foo?filterBy=ABC&limit=30 (notice it says "filterBy" instead of location")
It should be returning this resource instead:
http://localhost:8000/base/Foo?locations=Bar&limit=30
It seems the filterBy is being turned into a string in the ngResource call. I wan't it to use the value of the attrs.filterBy, but it doesn't like dot notation in the parameter value.
I've also tried this:
var getFilter = function() {
return attrs.filterBy;
};
But when I do that, the resource URL turns into:
http://localhost:8000/base/Foo?getFilter=Bar&limit=30
Note the "getFilter" is the parameter now. So is there any way to create a custom parameter?

When you write filterBy: value then filterBy is an identifier. It's static. It has no relation whatsoever to any variable.
params[filterBy] = attrs.filter; on the other hand dynamically adds a property and the value within the brackets is an expression that can be resolved to a string. So it can be a variable.
