What is the best way to compile programs inside emacs? I am currently opening a separate buffer with C-x 3 and running eshell inside it using M-x eshell then invoking either make or clang directly; most of the time I do have a Makefile set up.
Is there any advantage with running the compilation process using M-x compile vs running make inside eshell? Any other ways to do it and what are the advantages/disadvantages of those?
The easiest way to do this is to use the Emacs built-in compile command. M-x compile should do you fine. You can then edit the command that will be run (by default make -k) and then hit return to run the compilation. Emacs will then parse the output and if it finds any errors they will link to the source files so you can open them in a buffer.
Positives about it are:
Parsing of the output buffer
Memorisation of the compile command between invocations
Compilation output is shown in a non-selected buffer, you can quickly edit the file you were working on and fix any silly errors.
M-n and M-p scroll by error messages
Most of these features are provided by the compilation-minor-mode minor mode though not the actual compilation command and buffer. Once you have run a compilation command in eshell you could probably get similar results by setting the minor mode to compilation-minor-mode.
I personally prefer to run make or whatever command you're using to
compile within a multi-term
for the following reasons:
it works like M-xcompileRET if you activate
compilation-shell-minor-mode (M-p, C-`, …).
but you can, obviously, use other commands like
mkdir build
cd build
./configure --with-another-option
Of course you can do this from Emacs but I prefer the shell
interaction for this kind of stuff.
And imo, the main drawback of M-xcompile is that if
you're editing a file located in another directory than your
Makefile then you have to use M-xcompile in the correct
directory and then M-xrecompile. But if you want, say to
make clean && make, then you'll have to switch to the correct
directory, do it, switch back.
However term.el has its own drawback, it uses a non-portable hacky
way to track the current directory.

I always use the -x (or debug flag) when it come to bash script, or shell scripts in general.
Now i'm curious to know, is there an equivalent, either using a specific compiler options, (i use gcc, but i don't mind any other compilers) or by using a specific code in my project?
Basically i just wanted a way to emulate what bash does (using the debug flag) which show which command/function was launched first, in order, and also show the output of said function, with additional errors message etc.But for C.
I'm aware of most debug option out there, especially considering the compiler, but i really wish i could do this in my C projects too.(especially the part where it show what is executed in order, like bash does with -x)
NB: There isn't any goal in this specific question beside the question itself, as i'm just curious if this exist, and thus don't have any need for it beside the actual knowledge acquired from said answered question.
Yes, you can mimic this behaviour with a debugger.
With GDB for instance you can write "Init Files" and "Command Files" in which you can write a simple loop:
break main
run
while 1
next
end
If you put a file named .gdbinit in the directory where you start gdb, this file will be executed or gdb will lead you on the way to configure it in order that it will be executed.
The other option is to pipe this file into your gdb-call:
gdb a.out < debug_me_like-x
Where the "debug_me_like-x" file is the one mentioned above.

I'm trying to find a way to convert simple C code to NASM assembly. I have tried using objconv and downloaded and unzipped and built it since I am using a MAC; however, it doesn't seem to be working. I keep getting "-bash: objconv: command not found". Does anyone know another way or can help me solve the -bash error.
Bash is the program that takes the words you type in a terminal and launches other programs. If it is reporting an error, it is because it cannot find the program you want to run (at least in this case).
You need to either find a pre-packaged installation of objconv, or you need to do the work to "integrate" your copy of objconv yourself.
If you can identify the executable you want to run (probably called objconv) you need to add that to your path. The easiest way (if it is just for you) is to verify that your ~/.bashrc or ~/.bashprofile has a line that looks something like
PATH=$PATH:${HOME}/bin
Don't worry if it doesn't look exactly the same. Just make sure there's a ${HOME}/bin or ~/bin (~ is the short version of ${HOME}).
If you have that then type the commands
cd ~/bin
ln -fs ../path/to/objconv
and you will create a soft link (a type of file) in your home binary directory, and the program should be available to the command line.
If you create the file, and nothing above has any errors, but it is not available to the command line, you might need to set the executable bit on your "real" (not link) copy of objconv.
If this doesn't work, by now you should be well primed for a better, more specific question.
If you have gcc installed, try gcc -masm=intel -S source.c to generate assembly files in a syntax very similar to that of MASM.
I have a problem with compiling and running C codes in notepad++.
I am using the nppexec plugin and wrote the following in the script section after pressing F6:

Here, substitution.c is my program to be run. The problem is that the gcc part is working fine but I am not able to execute the program from here as there is no response.
As you see, it just says process started and after that nothing. No response to a key being pressed, it just accepts everything like a text editor.
If I go to the working directory and execute the program from there (double clicking the exe file) then it seems to run perfectly fine. The problem seems to be in my script or the plugin.
Please, can anyone find out what is wrong with my compiling and running script?

The 1st line saves the document that is currently active inside notepad++.
The 2nd line ensures your current directory is the one of the active document. This let you refraining from using the "$(CURRENT_DIRECTORY)" variable in the rest of the lines.
The 3rd line removes any executables and object-file leftovers from previous successful compilations. Removing the last executable is a nice idea, because if you don't then the last line will cause your .exe produced by the last compilation to be run anyway, even if your current compilation fails. A failed compilation does not produce an .exe, so normally you don't want NppExec to run the previous .exe. Removing the previously produced object-file is optional, but it does ensure that it will not affect fresh compilations (it makes more sense in multi-file projects, as an alternative to the touch command-line tool).
The 4th line compiles the active document. Feel free to modify gcc's options according to your needs. If you add C:\MinGW\bin into the Windows PATH environment variable, and assuming you are using only one gcc installation on your system, then you can skip the absolute path, and write just gcc instead.
The last line executes the produced executable. The npp_run command tells NppExec to launch a new command-prompt window, and run your program in it (unless it is a WIN32 GUI program). I personally find it more convenient compared to the NppExec console embed in notepad++. It looks more natural and it also avoids some I/O redirection problems of the NppExec console.
However, if your program is a console app that does not interact with the user say via a loop, then this approach will cause the launched command-prompt window to close immediately after your program terminates, not giving you the chance to inspect its output. In that case you should have you program waiting for a key to be pressed by the user just before its termination. A quick-and-dirty way is to put a system("pause"); right before your main() function's return and/or exit() statements (it is much better though to write a simple cross-platform function or macro for this).
You may experiment with the above script by typing it in F6's <temporary script> and save it permanently for general use when you are happy with its behavior.
On a side note, you may also find it useful to have a look at this post, where I'm trying to explain how to setup NppExec so it jumps to the appropriate line in the source code, by double-clicking on any error gcc spits in the NppExec console during compilation.
i'm trying to do some code in a keyboard driver, a 3rd party software that looks like this can run the command i'm trying to do in a plugin file that compiles alongside the daemon that the command needs to be sent to. the command looks like this.
g15_send_cmd (g15screen_fd,G15DAEMON_MKEYLEDS,mled_state);
here's the code i'm working with and trying to run the command in (it compiles as a plugin with the daemon. in the uncompiled source it's
"g15daemon/plugin/g15_plugin_uinput.c"
the file that defines the command is in

"g15daemon/libg15daemon_client/g15daemon_clinet.h"
whereas with the g15macro (3rd software) is run from outside the daemon for various reasons i don't want to (and pretty much can't) use it, one being speed of execution of commands when keys are pressed.
so the program compiles like this without error it seems. but if the code i specified above activates, the driver(daemon) crashes giving
g15daemon: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/g15daemon/1.9.5.3/plugins/g15plugin_uinput.so: undefined
symbol: g15_send_cmd
what did i do wrong or what am i missing here? (and i'm sorry if the code in the plugin file is ugly down by that switch command, but i didn't know how to do any better since i don't know C much at all, all i have behind me are Py and C#)

You forgot to link your plugin with g15daemon_client library. The simple way to fix it is to add -lg15daemon_client to the linker flags.
I tried to use a make file in code::blocks but I am doing it wrong. I have the version installed with the compilers included. http://sourceforge.net/projects/codeblocks/files/Binaries/10.05/Windows/codeblocks-10.05mingw-setup.exe/download. What do I do with the make file? It starts with:

You don't tend to execute the make file itself, rather you execute make, giving it the make file as an argument:
make -f pax.mk
If your make file is actually one of the standard names (like makefile or Makefile), you don't even need to specify it. It'll be picked up by default (if you have more than one of these standard names in your build directory, you better look up the make man page to see which takes precedence).
As paxdiablo said make -f pax.mk would execute the pax.mk makefile, if you directly execute it by typing ./pax.mk, then you would get syntax error.
Also you can just type make if your file name is makefile/Makefile.
Suppose you have two files named makefile and Makefile in the same directory then makefile is executed if make alone is given. You can even pass arguments to makefile.
