I am trying to learn WPF, and like anything programming I do, I always try to create something fun for my self so the project is not boring.
So I want to have a program that starts up with three boxes fadding in one after another. When a box is clicked have all the boxes fade out and a separate WPF user control I create fade in. Then have a button to fade that out and get the three boxes again to fade back in.
Now I do have visual studio 2010 and blend 4. I am able to create a animations like the ones above in blend but the problem is it goes from one animation to the next not stopping. And I have no way in visual studio to program events or anything else because the WPF form in visual studio looks white (nothing I do in blend shows up, it is only viewable in blend).
I am looking for some good tutorials or links to help me do the above. I don't think it would be that hard I just need a step in the right direction. I am not looking for code here because I don't want someone to do it for me, rather I just want help. And if you have any other related tips to share please do.
So thank you, and I know this is sort of a different post but thank you for any insight you have and any links you share.
You have to walk before you can run, and in this case that means learning some of the basics of xaml before trying to work with timelines, triggers and click events. I would start with the Lynda videos (they're free) found here: http://www.lynda.com/Expression-Blend-tutorials/getting-started-with/384-2.html

I'm new to Visual Studio and Blend and i'm trying to see their difference. I thought that Blend was ideal for adding more design and interactivity into your app so i chose to use this in order to create an app about a virtual museum (which i wanted to include design and 3d elements).
So far i have created 2 Grids. The 1st Grid contains a sign in or sign up option(along with its design for which i used Blend tools). The 2nd Grid is the registation form which i wanted the user to be redirected to after the user has clicked the sign up button. I'm trying to make the transition from grid 1 to grid 2 like if i had two windows forms, but i can't seem to find how i can do that. Any ideas on how to do it?
I tried to open it into Visual studio and it doesn't seem to respond that well.I suppose i must do something wrong.
So taken the previous difficulties, i'm wondering whether Blend is not necessary to use to create this kind of app and i could simply use standard Visual Studio's windows form without having problem adding design elements.
Thanks in advance
Visual Studio has all that you need to be able to do your interfaces as you want them to be. As Glen Thomas said, you should learn how to code in xaml to create your interface. Visual studio gives you a render of what it looks like in real-time while coding it so it might be helpful to do it this way.
I am working on a WPF-MVVM (.Net 4.0) application that has a Metro look (it just has a look, it is not a metro application.)
I need to show a windows 8 like message box that blocks the operations for the user before he rids that message box by clicking yes/no/cancel (or any button.).
I came across this otherwise great article and momentarily thought that I have found the solution. But this has its own drawback. It just stops the user from interacting with the controls behind by mouse clicks. The user can however use the tab key to get back to the buttons behind and click them (pressing enter).
A number of things are coming to my mind:
should I go for custom adorners and play with hitTestable property?
Or should I place a control and play with its visible property.
Before going for any approach I thought of putting forward my question to the wonderful community here if someone has done a similar thing in past and provide me some pointer/reference/approach.
Can someone suggest what is the way to achieve this? Please note I will be happy to use prism or any other open source if that solves the purpose but the window will have to be custom made.
Please excuse me if you find this too stupid a question. Please pardon my ignorance. Thanks for reading this.
I recently came across a similar problem, I resolved it using a DialogPresenter as explained there:
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/36516/WPF-Modal-Dialog
I had to do a few tweaks there and there but overall it's working fine and I now have a nice way to display dialog boxes!
There is a better way of doing it
var dialog = new MessageDialog("Select Social network is already authorised!");
dialog.ShowAsync();
I need to submit a project tomorrow, and the topic is WPF using XAML. We are using VB by the way. Now I am still a beginner at programming, so I needed help. I've got a ton of WPF and blend tutorials open in tabs in my browser, but I have no idea where to start, and no idea for a project. I asked my tutor and he said he'll be checking our understanding of XAML, and creating an object using XAML as well as the other way round.
I stumbled onto some tutorials of media players main in WPF, and I decided to go with it. But because I have never used blend or WPF along with XAML before, I don't know what to do, if say I make a button in blend with effects, so that I may add coding behind it in VB. Please help me out. I've got like 15 hours before I have to submit.
You're going to need Microsoft VB.Net Express 2010
at least. I'm not honestly sure if it supports WPF but it is free.
I'd look it up and start drinking coffee. If it does I guess copying your xaml into a new project is the place to start.
I'm creating a training lab for a desktop application.
Basically it'll be a series of screenshots with hotspots, when the user clicks in the right spot it advances to the next screenshot. There will also be some simple text input, so a textbox will need be overlaid over some of the screenshots. The logic is simply if the user enters the right thing they get to move to the next screen.
Adobe Captivate or good old timeline-based Flash is great for creating stuff like this. But this project has to be Silverlight. I considered using Captivate along with a swf to silverlight converter, but I believe those converters only support animations not logic.
The question is: what is the easiest way to create this type of thing in Silverlight? Can Expression Blend do it? Other alternatives? Ideally little programming is required.
Blend is great for this, you may also want to try using Sketchflow to prototype it quickly http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/SketchFlow_OverView.aspx
Using Expression Blend's behaviours and storyboards makes it easy to create an application with no code in no time.
I'm working on an application that will have attachments, and I would like to create a type of display like in windows Explorer, where you choose a "Details" view, and also show the preview pane.
I would like to be able to show a thumbnail view of the attached file currently selected, based on the file extension.
Does anyone know where I can start to look for examples on how to pull this off?
I know Outlook 2007 can also do something similar using preview handlers. I think that’s going to be the direction I want to go in, but I'm not sure where to start.
Many thanks.
All Hail the Glory of the Hypnotoad!
While you could do it in WPF, you should not do it.
Seriously: don't do it! - you would break many apps (including one of mine).
To do this without .NET, see here for a nice guide.
I think you can start here
http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/eyal/archive/2007/07/29/Hosting-vista_2F00_office-2007-previewers-in-winform-application.aspx
(the code is partially black on black, at least for me, but you can disable the styles or just copy it)
