How to set guage value for component art control - silverlight

I have a Guage control in MainPage.xaml which needs three value (value, minimum and maximum). I have written the logic to get these three values from database in a stored procedure.
Please let me know how can I call these value in DomainService and bind the guage control properties to it.

Below I will elucidate my knowledge dump as it took me some time to figure this out precisely, and I'd like to contribute this per SO's documentation guidelines for anyone other than us:
0) I'm going to assume you have your stored procedures all implemented and are utilizing RIA services (as they're simpler for Silverlight development)
1) In the .Web, add a new EDM - you'll need to pull in all stored procedures manually via import function. At this point the autogenerated code part should be done for you, go ahead and build your project.
2) Time to add your domain service. Add a new Domain Service, this won't automatically generate code to pull in your stored procedures.
3) Next, visit leeontech (http://leeontech.wordpress.com/2010/05/24/ria-services-and-storedprocedures/) for some manual coding based on your stored procedure definitions.
What you're doing here is exposing data from stored procedures.
4) Start using your newly created classes
5) In silverlight, when you use Gauge on the front end side, make sure you assign max first using Math.Max() and similarly min using Math.Min() methods in the Load completed event handler. This way you are guaranteed that the asynchronous request is completed and you have values available. Actually in Visual Studio its pretty easy to debug that event handler even.
ps:
The visual studio tooling can recognize and allow you to create complex types based on your stored procedures you have implemented in step 1. As my personal best practice I like to assign the return column names as uniquely as I possibly can, thereby using them in client code the same way.
In stored procedure's final select I'll do something like
SELECT actualValueInDatabase as clientSideDataTypeIWant...
if that makes sense

How to design a system backend which user can customize some configuration

I should model a system that clients can apply some configuration on separated entities.
Let me explain with an example:
We have users that have a config tab in their dashboards.
We have a feature to send notifications on their browsers and we have a feature which we can send an email to them.
We also have a feature as a pop-up.
The user should be able to modify our default notification message, modify our default email template, modify our default text on email or elements.
For the pop-up, The user should be able to modify the width and height of the pop-up, change the default texts, modify background color, change the button location on the pop-up.
And when I want to send an email to the user I should apply these settings on the template then send the email. Also when the front-end wants to show those pop-ups, wants to get these configs from my API and apply them.
These settings will be more and more in the future. So I can not specify a settings table with some fields. I think it is not a good idea.
What can I do? How to design and model this scenario? What are the best practices?
Can I use a NoSQL like MongoDB instead of a relational database?

I have built similar sub-systems before, by hand.
I don't know much about Django, but do some research to see if it has any "out of the box" or community developed / open source add-ons that do what you want.
If you have to do it yourself...
A key-value pair is not going to be enough, but it's close. You only need a simple data structure:
ID (how your code recognizes this property), e.g. UserPopupBackgroundColor.
Property name (what the user see's / how they recognize this property in the UI), e.g. "Popup Background Color".
Optional - Data type. This is essential if you want to do any sensible input validation. E.g. pop up height should probably expect an integer, and have a sensible min/max value on it, where as an email address is totally different.
Optional, some kind of flag to identify valid properties.
That last flag is bit of an edge case, but it's useful if you use the subsystem to hold more properties than you want users to have access to. E.g. imagine you want to get a list of all properties and display the list to the user - are there any 'special' ones you need to filter out that they should not see?
You then need somewhere to put the values, and link them to the user:
Row ID / GUID. You can use a unique constraint across the User and PropertyID if you wanted to instead, but personally I find a unique row ID is a reliable and flexible approach for most scenarios.
UserID.
PropertyID - refers to ID mentioned above.
PropertyValue
Depending on how serious you need to get, you can dump all the values into the one PropertyValue column (assuming you're persisting this in a database) - which means that column needs to be a string, or, you can add a column per data type.
If you want to add a column per data type, don't kill yourself. The most I have ever done is:
PropertyValue_text (text/varchar)
PropertyValue_int (or double)
PropertyValue_DateTime (date/time - surprise!!)
So when I say 'column per data type' I mean per data type your stack needs/wants to handle - not the 'optional' data types you define in the logic - since that data type is partially just about input validation.
Obviously if you use different logical data types, you can map those to data type columns in the database. The reasons for doing this (using the different data types in the database are:
To reduce the amount of casting you need to do (code to database, and vis-a-versa).
To leverage database level query features, which can be useful. E.g. find emails values and verify them; find expired date values; etc.
It takes a bit of work to build all this, but it's powerful once you get set-up because you can add any number of properties. If you are using the 'full' solution with explicit data types then adding new logical data types isn't too painful if you already have a few set-up.
Before you design and build this, think about future reuse, and anyway you can package it up for later - or community use. Remember it impact all layers (UI, logic and data).
Final tip - when coming up with the property ID's (that the code uses) make them human readable, and use some sort of naming convention so that adding new ones later is easy and follows a predictable path.
Update - Defining Property and PropertyValue in database tables is an obvious way to go. Depending on the situation you can also define Property in code - especially if you don't add new ones or change existing ones very frequently. Another bonus is that if you're in an MVP situation you can use the code effectively as a stub, and build out the database/persistence part for that later.

Short lived DbContext in WPF application reasonable?

In his book on DbContext, #RowanMiller shows how to use the DbSet.Local property to avoid 1.) unnecessary roundtrips to the database and 2.) passing around collections (created with e.g. ToList()) in the application (page 24). I then tried to follow this approach. However, I noticed that from one using [} – block to another, the DbSet.Local property becomes empty:

Then, what is the point on page 24? How can I avoid the passing around of my collections if the DbSet.Local is only usable inside the using- block? Furthermore, how can I benefit from the change tracking if I use these short-lived context instances not handing over any cache data to each others under the hood? So, if the contexts should be short-lived for freeing resources such as connections, have I to give up the caching for this? I.e. I can’t use both at the same time (short-lived connections but long-lived cache)? So my only option would be to store the results returned by the query in my own variables, exactly what is discouraged in the motivation on page 24?
I am developing a WPF application which maybe will also become multi-tiered in the future, involving WCF. I know Julia has an example of this in her book, but I currently don’t have access to it. I found several others on the web, e.g. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc700340.aspx (old ObjectContext, but good in explaining the inter-layer-collaborations). There, a long-lived context is used (although the disadvantages are mentioned, but no solution to these provided).
It’s not only that the single Destinations.Local gets lost, as you surely know all other entities fetched by the query are, too.

After some more reading in Julia Lerman’s book, it seems to boil down to that EF does not have 2nd level caching per default; with some (considerable, I think) effort, however, ones can add 3rd party caching solutions, as is also described in the book and in various articles on MSDN, codeproject etc.
I would have appreciated if this problem had been mentioned in the section about DbSet.Local in the DbContext book that it is in fact a first level cache which is destroyed when the using {} block ends (just my proposal to make it more transparent to the readers). After first reading I had the impression DbSet.Local would always return the same reference (Singleton-style) also in the second using {} block despite the new DbContext instance.
But I am still unsure whether the 2nd level cache is the way to go for my WPF application (as Julia mentions the 2nd level cache in her article for distributed applications)? Or is the way to go to get my aggregate root instances (DDD, Eric Evans) of my domain model into memory by one or some queries in a using {} block, disposing the DbContext and only holding the references to the aggregate instances, this way avoiding a long-lived context? It would be great if you could help me with this decision.

The Local property provides a “local view of all Added, Unchanged, and Modified entities in this set”. Like all change tracking it is specific to the context you are currently using.
The DB Context is a workspace for loading data and preparing changes.
If two users were to add changes at the same time, they must not know of the others changes before they saved them. They may discard their prepared changes which suddenly would lead to problems for other other user as well.
A DB Context should be short lived indeed, but may be longer than super short when necessary. Also consider that you may not save resources by keeping it short lived if you do not load and discard data but only add changes you will save. But it is not only about resources but also about the DB state potentially changing while the DB Context is still active and has data loaded; which may be important to keep in mind for longer living contexts.
If you do not know yet all related changes you want to save into the database at once then I suggest you do not use the DB Context to store your changes in-memory but in a data structure in your code.
You can of course use entity objects for doing so without an active DB Context. This makes sense if you do not have another appropriate data class for it and do not want to create one, or decide preparing the changes in them make more sense. You can then use DbSet.Attach to attach the entities to a DB Context for saving the changes when you are ready.

Self Tracking Entities Traffic Optimization

I'm working on a personal project using WPF with Entity Framework and Self Tracking Entities. I have a WCF web service which exposes some methods for the CRUD operations. Today I decided to do some tests and to see what actually travels over this service and even though I expected something like this, I got really disappointed. The problem is that for a simple update (or delete) operation for just one object - lets say Category I send to the server the whole object graph, including all of its parent categories, their items, child categories and their items, etc. I my case it was a 170 KB xml file on a really small database (2 main categories and about 20 total and about 60 items). I can't imagine what will happen if I have a really big database.
I tried to google for some articles concerning traffic optimization with STE, but with no success, so I decided to ask here if somebody has done something similar, knows some good practices, etc.
One of the possible ways I came out with is to get the data I need per object with more service calls:
return context.Categories.ToList();//only the categories
...
return context.Items.ToList();//only the items
Instead of:
return context.Categories.Include("Items").ToList();
This way the categories and the items will be separated and when making changes or deleting some objects the data sent over the wire will be less.
Has any of you faced a similar problem and how did you solve it or did you solve it?
We've encountered similiar challenges. First of all, as you already mentioned, is to keep the entities as small as possible (as dictated by the desired client functionality). And second, when sending entities back over the wire to be persisted: strip all navigation properties (nested objects) when they haven't changed. This sounds very simple but is not at all trivial. What we do is to recursively dig into the entities present in trackable collections of say the "topmost" entity (and their trackable collections, and theirs, and...) and remove them when their ChangeTracking state is "Unchanged". But be carefull with this, because in some cases you still need these entities because they have been removed or added to trackable collections of their parent entity (so then you shouldn't remove them).
This, what we call "StripEntity", is also mentioned (not with any code sample or whatsoever) in Julie Lerman's - Programming Entity Framework.
And although it might not be as efficient as a more purist kind of approach, the use of STE's saves a lot of code for queries against the database. We are not in need for optimal performance in a high traffic situation, so STE's suit our needs and takes away a lot of code to communicate with the database. You have to decide for your situation what the "best" solution is. Good luck!
You can find an Entity Framework project item at http://selftrackingentity.codeplex.com/. With version 0.9.8, I added a method called GetObjectGraphChanges() that returns an optimized entity object graph with only objects that have changes.
Also, there are two helper methods: EstimateObjectGraphSize() and EstimateObjectGraphChangeSize(). The first method returns the estimate size of the whole entity object along with its object graph; and the later returns the estimate size of the optimized entity object graph with only object that have changes. With these two helper methods, you can decide whether it makes sense to call GetObjectGraphChanges() or not.

When does the defered execution occur?

I've got a situation which I want to fetch data from a database, and assign it to the tooltips of each row in a ListView control in WPF. (I'm using C# 4.0.) Since I've not done this sort of thing before, I've started a smaller, simpler app to get the ideas down before I attempt to use them in my main WPF app.
One of my concerns is the amount of data that could potentially come down. For that reason I thought I would use LINQ to SQL, which uses deferred execution. I thought that would help and not pull down the data until the user passes their mouse over the relevant row. To do this, I'm going to use a separate function to assign the values to the tooltip, from the database, passed upon the parameters I need to pass to the relevant stored procedures. I'm doing 2 queries using LINQ to SQL, using 2 different stored procedures, and assigning the results to 2 different DataGrids.
Even though I know that LINQ to SQL does use deferred execution, I'm beginning to wonder if some of the code I'm writing may defeat my whole intent of using LINQ to SQL. For example, in testing in my simpler app, I am choosing several different values to see how it works. One selection of values brought no data back, as there was no data for the given parameters. I thought this could potentially cause the user confusion, so I thought I would check the Count property of the list that I assign from running the DBML associated method (related to the stored procedure). Thinking about it, I would think it would be necessary for LINQ to run the query, in order to give me a result for the Count property. Am I not correct?
If I eliminate the call to the list's Count property, I'm still wondering if I might have a problem; if LINQ may still be invoked, because I'm associating the tooltip to the control via a function call?
You are correct, when you call the Count property it iterates over the result set. Not clear on your last question, but the LINQ probably gets called at the point where you populate your DataGrids, way after the tooltip comes into play.
EDIT: however, this does not mean there is anything wrong with deffered execution or your use of it, it executes at the latest possible stage, right when you need the data. If you still want to check the Count ahead of actually fetching all the data, you could have a simple LINQ to SQL function that checks for Any() rows. (Actually Any() is probably what you want more than Count > 0)
You should use Any(), not Count(), but even Any() will cause the query to be executed - after all, it can't determine whether or not there are any rows in the result set without executing the query. But there's executing the query, and there's fetching the result set. Any() will fetch one row, Count() will fetch them all.
That said, I think that having a non-instantaneous operation that occurs on mouseover is just a bad idea. There was a build of Outlook, once, that displayed a helpful tooltip when you moused over the Print button. Less helpfully, it got the data for that tooltip by calling the system function that finds out what printers are available. So you'd be reaching for a menu, and the button would grab the mouse pointer and the UI would freeze for two seconds while it went out and figured out how to display a tooltip that you weren't even asking for. I still hate this program today. Don't be this guy.
A better approach would be to get your tooltip data asynchronously after populating the visible data on the screen. It's easy enough to create a BackgroundWorker that fetches the data into a DataTable, and then make the DataTable available to the view models in the RunWorkerCompleted event handler. (Do it there so that you don't do any updates to UI-bound data on the UI thread.) You can implement a ToolTip property in your view model that returns a default value (probably null, but maybe something like "Fetching data...") if the DataTable containing tool tip data is null, and that calculates the value if it's not. That should work admirably. You can even implement property-change notification so that the ToolTip will still get updated if the user keeps the mouse pointer over it while you're fetching the data.
Alex is correct that calling Count() or Any() will enumerate the LINQ expression causing the query to execute. I would recommend re-thinking your design as you probably don't want a query to the database executed every time the user moves his/her mouse. There is also the issue of the delay to query the database. What might be instantaneous on your dev box with a local database might have a multi-second delay on a heavily loaded server. I would recommend creating a DisplayTooltip() function that takes a lazily evaluated LINQ expression. You can then cache the results or apply other heuristics to decide whether you should actually be querying the database or not.

XPathNavigator in Silverlight

I have a code library that makes heavy use of XPathNavigator to parse some specific xml document. The xml document is cross-referenced, meaning that an element can reference another which has not yet been encountered during parsing:

<ElementX id="1234" .../>
The document doesn't really look like this, but the point is that 1) there is an xml schema that enforces the overall document structure, 2) elements inside the document can reference each other using some IDs, and 3) there is quite a few such cross references between different elements in the document.
The document is parsed in two phases. In the first pass I walk through the document
XPathDocument doc = ...;
XPathNavigator nav = doc.CreateNavigator();
nav.MoveToRoot();
nav.MoveToFirstChild()...
and occasionally 'bookmark' the current position (element) in the document using XPathNavigator.Clone() method. This gives me a lightweight instance of an XPathNavigator which I can store somewhere and use later to jump back to a particular place (element) in my document.
Once I have enough information collected in the first pass (for example, I have made sure there is indeed an ElementX with an id='1234'), I jump back to saved bookmarks (using those saved XPathNavigators) and complete the parsing.
Well, now I'm about to use this library in Silverlight 3.0 and to my horror the XPathNavigator is not in the System.Xml assembly.
Questions:
1) Am I missing something obvious (i.e. XPathNavigator does exist in some shape or form, for example in a toolkit or a freeware library)?
2) If I do have to make modifications in the code, what would be the best way to go? Ideally, I would like to make minimal changes, not to rewrite 80% of the code just to be able to use something like XLinq.
To resume, in case I have to give up XPathNavigator, all I need is a way to bookmark places in my document and to get back to them so that I can continue to iterate from where I left off.

You are not missing something obvious, there is no implementation of XPathNavigator or XPathDocument in the Silverlight versions of the libraries.
The "best way to go" is highly subjective and would really depend on how many lines of code are really depending on XPathNavigator. However I see a couple of choices.
Go ahead and re-write the code using XDocument, XElement etc from the System.Xml.Linq namepsace. This may not be as bad a choice as you might think.
Wrap Xml-to-Linq objects in your own implementation of those properties and methods of the XPathNavigator that you are actually using. It shouldn't be too hard re-create most the features of the XPathNavigator against the Xml-to-Linq objects. You can then run your existing code against your own XPathNavigator.
