Recently I've been learning how to program C. For most of the time, I have been using the C version of Eclipse. Recently, I tried out Xcode. I am using a Mac running Mac OS X Lion - Xcode version 4.1.
There is one grievance I have: at the top of every file that I create, there is this little section of comments that I wish to remove or better yet, change.
When I create a file, something like this is put at the top of the file by default:

Obviously the things in capitals would be replaced with an actual value. For those of you have use, or have used Xcode, for programming C - do you know a way of how to change or remove these default comments?

According to #Michael Dautermann 's comment below, change templates in Xcode.app bundle is not a good way. Check https://stackoverflow.com/a/33743/380774 for more information.
You can remove or change the header in File Templates, I'm using Xcode 4.3, and the File Templates is in /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Library/Xcode/Templates/File Templates.
Please do not edit files inside Xcode, that will break the application signature and will cause Xcode to refuse to start up after the next restart or so.
Create an IDETemplateMacros.plist file containing a dictionary with a FILEHEADER key (string) instead.
You can put the file in
for all users on a single project by dropping it in your project's or workspace's xcshareddata folder (e.g. MyAppWorkspace.xcworkspace/xcshareddata/IDETemplateMacros.plist)
for yourself for a single project by copying it into e.g MyAppWorkspace.xcworkspace/xcuserdata/YOURNAMEHERE.xcuserdatad
global for all projects that you open in your account by dropping the file in ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/UserData/
You can change it in Xcode project File.

I am new to Meson so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.
Simple Version of the Question:
I want to be able to assign a dynamic version number to the meson project version at build time. Essentially meson.project_version()=my_dynamic_var or project( 'my_cool_project', 'c', version : my_dynamic_var') (which of course won't work).
I would rather not pre-process the file if I don't have to.
Some background if anybody cares:
My build system dynamically comes up with a version number for the project. In my case, it is using a bash script. I have no problem getting that version into my top level meson.build file using run_command and scraping stdout from there. I have read that using doing it this way is bad form so if there is another way to do this.. I am all ears.
I am also able to create and pass the correct -DPRODUCT_VERSION="<my_dynamic_var>" via add_global_arguments so I COULD just settle for that.. but I would like the meson project itself to carry the same version for the logs and so I can use meson.project_version() to get the version in subprojects for languages other than c/c++.
The short answer, as noted in comments to the question, appears to be no. There is no direct way to set the version dynamically in the project call.
However, there are some work arounds, and the first looks promising for the simple case:
(1) use meson rewriting capability
$ meson rewrite kwargs set project / version 1.0.0
Then obviously use an environment variable instead of 1.0.0.
(2) write a wrapper script which reads the version from the environment and substitutes it into your meson.build file in the project call.
(3) adopt conan.io and have your meson files generated.
(4) use build options. This option, while not as good as (1) might work for other work flows.
Here's how option (4) works.
create a meson_options.txt file in your meson root directory
add the following line:
option('version', type : 'string', value : '0.0.0', description : 'project version')
then create a meson.build file that reads this option.
project('my_proj', 'cpp')
version = get_option('version')
message(version)
conf_data = configuration_data()
conf_data.set('version', version)
When you go to generate your project, you have an extra step of setting options.
$ meson build && cd build
$ meson configure -Dversion=$BUILD_VERSION
Now the version is available as a build option, then we use a configuration_data object to make it available for substitution into header/source files (which you might want to get it into shared libraries or what not).

And config.hpp.in looks something like this:

When we do the configure_file call, #version# will get substituted for the version string we set in the meson configure step.
So this way is pretty convoluted, but like I said, you may still end up doing some of it, e.g. to print copyright info and what not.
As of 0.60.3 you may directly assign version from run_command which means the following will work without any meson_options.txt.
project('randomName', 'cpp',
version : run_command('git', 'rev-parse', '--short', 'HEAD').stdout().strip(),
default_options : [])
In particular, it is also possible to assign the result of a bash script, simply invoke it instead of git.
I have a small C console program and I want to add an .ico file to it, so that the executable looks nice.
How can I do this in CodeBlocks with MinGW/gcc?
I could not find relevant help via google that a total beginner (like me for C) could follow, so I will Q&A this topic.
First of all you need an .ico file. Put it in the folder with your main.c file.
In CodeBlocks go to File -> New -> Empty File and name it icon.rc. It has to be visible in the Workspace/Project otherwise CodeBlocks will not be aware of this file. It will show up there in a project folder called Resources .
Put the following line in it: MAINICON ICON "filename.ico". MAINICON is just an identifier, you can choose something different. More info 1 & More info 2.
Save the files and compile - CodeBlocks will do everything else for you
What will happen now, is windres.exe (the Resource Compiler) compiling the resource script icon.rc and the icon to an object binary file to obj\Release\icon.res. And the linker will add it to the executable.
It's so easy yet it took me quite a while to find it out - I hope I can save someone else having the same problem some time.
I am programming with C using Code::Blocks. My project is divided in 3, header, implementation and main.
Whenever I used a project, apart from the source files and the bin and obj folders I had a .depend and a .layout file. All good.
Now I created a new project, and just copied -> pasted everything new in source files. I did this twice.
For each case, I have a .c.save file, which has the same name of the implementation file (ie. the implementation file is called imp, then the file is called imp.c.save). I asked a friend of mine what it might be, and he said I need to beware as he had two random files created, which prevented him from building correctly (he got a stupid error). When the files were deleted everything went back to normal.
I did a short test of the program and I can find nothing different. I am hesitant to delete it since this cropped up twice in two cases, but I don't want to compromise my coding.
Tried to google and I didn't find much. Any help?
Well, it didn't cause any problems so I assuming it is an autosave file.
Maybe I just have another black out but, this one line is giving me a lot of troubles:
FILE *fp = fopen("data/world.data", "rb");
This works fine under Linux when compiled with GCC. But when I compile it with Visual Studio, it crashes. fp is always NULL. Both the BIN and the EXE are in the exact same directory. Now, to make things even crazier, when I run the EXE using Wine under Linux... it... works...
I have absolutely not a god damn clue what's going on here. Maybe it's some insanely stupid mistake on my side, but I cannot get this thing to run under Windows :/
Also, I have another program which works just fine, there the data files are also contained in a sub directory named data.

Compiled it with CodeBlocks and MinGW, works like a charm. Guess it has to do something with MSVC or the Project Settings in VS.
It sounds like data isn't a subdirectory of your current directory when you run the program. By default (for x86 targets) VS will build and run your program from either a DEBUG or RELEASE subdirectory of the base directory you've created for the project. You can modify the directory that will be "current" when it runs though (e.g., project | properties | configuration properties | debugging for VS 2008).
Edit: While Windows requires that you use a backslash as a directory separator at the command line, a forward slash works fine in code -- this is not the source of your problem.
In windows you have to write the following:
FILE *fp = fopen("data\\world.data", "rb");
This is like that because the backslash is a special character (so a backslash in a string is written using \ and a quotation symbol is \" and so with other special characters).
Since this issue happens only on windows. I doubt whether the file is really named "world.data". As you know, the default setting for windows hides the file extention. Is its real name world.data.xxx?
Include a line to GetCurrentDirectory(), to see if you are running from the directory you expected.
When I develop in C#/ C++ on visual studio, I normally get to run it from the debug folder. I don't think it matters if forward slash is used in place of backslash in .net.
I happened to have the same problem, and suddenly i figured it out.
That should be your windows fault.
Let's say, FILE *fp = fopen("data/world.data", "rb"); in windows, if you hide the extensions, then you can see the file data/world.data, but actually it maybe /data/world.dat.txt or somewhat.
So please check the extensions.

I ran into this today, and it happened because I used "br" instead of "rb" on that mode argument.
The underlying fopen is throwing an exception of some kind, which only registers as a crash. It's not bothering to return the standard NULL response or set the associated error values.
I'm not sure but it may be because you're using slash instead of (an escaped) backslash in the path?
I have a huge project, whole written in C language and I have a single make file that is used to compile it. The project C files contains lots of capitalize problems in it's header files, meaning there are tones of header files that were miss-spelled in lots of C files.
The problem is I need to migrate this project to compile on Linux machine and since Linux is case sensitive I got tones of errors.
Is there an elegant way which I can run make file in Linux and tell him to ignore case sensitive?
Any other solution will be welcome as well.

You'll have to fix everything by hand and rename every file or fix every place with #include. Even if you have a huge project (comparable with linux kernel), it should be possible to do this during a hour or two. Automation may be possible, but manual way should be better - because script won't be able to guess which name is right - filename, or the name used in #include.
Besides, this situation is a fault of original project developer. If he/she wasn't sloppy and named every header in every #include correctly, this wouldn't happen. Technically, this is a code problem similar to syntax error. The only right way to deal with it is to fix it.
I think it takes not too long to write a small script, which goes thru the directories first, then replaces C headers. Explained:
Scan the headers' folder and collect filenames.
Make a lowercase list of them. You have now original and locased pairs.
Scan the C source files and find each line contains "#include"
Lowercase it.
Find the lowercase filename in the list collected and lowercased from headers.
Replace the source line with the one collected from headers.
You should put the modified files into a separate folder structure, avoid overwriting the whole source with some buggy stuff. Don't forget to create target folders during the source tree scan.
I recommend a script language for that task, I prefer PHP, but just it's the only server-side script language which I know. Yep, it will run for a while, but only once.
(I bet that you will have other difficulties with that project, this problem is not a typical indicator of high quality work.)
Well I can only tell you that you need to change the case of those header files. I don't know that there is any way you can make it automatic but still you can use cscope to do it in a easier way.

You can mount the files on a case-insensitive file system. FAT comes to mind. ntfs-3g does not appear to support this.
I use the find all and replace all functionality of Source Insight when i have to do complete replacement. But your problem seems quite big, but you can try the option to replace every header file name in all occurences of source files using the
"Find All" + "Replace" functionality. You can use notepad++ too for doing the same.
A long time ago there was a great tool under MPW (Macintosh Programmer's Workshop) called Canon. It was used to canonize text files, i.e. make all symbols found in a given refernce list have have the same usage of upper/lower case. This tool would be ideal for a task like this - I wonder if anything similar exists under Linux ?
