My RCP application contains 5 views which fill contents via database queries.
The problem is that the application start completely depends on database queries. In addition, if underlying db is closed the application start time takes too long.
What is the best practice for eclipse rcp views that use db as content source?
Is using a separate thread for filling views be a solution?
Move all your view updating code into an UIJob, then schedule it. User can find the progress of these tasks in the progress view if it is included in your RCP.
In addition, one UIJob takes care one view.

I just hit an interesting wall. We are in the process of developing a pretty reasonable sized application that has a ton of historical data. The plan is to use materialized views and do nightly/weekly refreshes as applicable to help reduce the impact on the server for large data set reports.
I know that in Cake 2, I could just define a new view by creating the appropriate model and the running with it. I could even bake the model as a starting point.
However, with Cake 4, I am getting an error when I try to use it. Specifically the error that gets raised is:
“Cannot describe v_12month_summary. It has 0 columns.”
This happens whether I bake, or manually create the entity and table model files.
Is there a way to use materialized, or even regular views, with CakePHP 4? Essentially, I would like to be able to:
$yearSummary = $this->fetchTable('V12monthSummary')->find()->where(['month'=>6,'year'=>2021'])
For past projects(the last few have been web using asp.net mvc) we created a service that caches our reference tables(as required) to be used primarily for dropdown lists.
Now I'm working on a desktop application. An upgrade from vb6/sybase to vb.net/sql server
I'm trying out WPF.
I started down the same path building up my DAL. one entity for each reference table.
I'm at the stage now where I want to setup the business layer (some reference tables can be edited)
And I'm not sure if I should follow the same process which is to use ReferenceTableService to "manage" the reference tables.(interacts with the DAL, Controller)
This will be an application that sits on a share that multiple users run.
What's the best way to deal with the reference tables? Caching them doesn't seem to be an option. Should I simply load them as each user opens up a new form in the application? Perhaps using a "ReferenceTableService"?
In this case, the Reference Table Service is thin layer in the application. Not a process running elsewhere.
I haven't done much WPF (be interesting to see what the WPF Gurus think) but I think your existing approach is sound and I don;t see why you should deviate from it.
Loading up on app start sounds reasonable; you just have to think about the expected lifetime of a user session vs the expected frequency of changes to the reference data.
Caching: if the data comes from a central service you could always introduce caching there.
I am building an application in Qt/QML.
I have a table view of the database (PostgreSQL).
Is there a way to dynamically refresh my table if there is any change in the database.
One no-so-efficient way to do it is to keep sending periodic SQL queries.
Is there any automatic way to keep my view refreshed?
I am open to use any other Database also if required.
Qt seems to support the NOTIFY mechanism of PostgreSQL databases. Googling for it it found some bug reports, so not sure of well implemented that is. Since I've never used it, I'll have to refer you to google.
If you use QSqlTableModel (or an editable subclass of QSqlQueryModel) with QTableView, any edits made will immediately be visible.
Our application is written in C# using .net 2.0. The application tracks our business process and users can attach office documents for reference as attachments. They frequently edit those documents. Currently, they have to save the file to their hard drive, edit and save the file, then re-attach to our application to save into database (SQL 2005).
Our users would like to be able to edit the document and save the changes without needing to detatch, edit, and re-attach.
We can programmatically launch the office (word, excel or powerpoint) document, but how can we tell when the document has closed and re-attach the updated version to the database automatically?
Thanks for any help.
Joe
You may have a designated directory (e.g. Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.MyDocuments)) where you keep the files currently edited and put a FileSystemWatcher to watch whether the file changes.
The Diagnostics.Process class also has an "Exited" event that will notify you when the process, well, exited.
Look into SmartDocument technology at MSDN. Of the three productivity apps you mention (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) the first two for sure, and possibly Powerpoint, can have the right side panel -- where you usually see styles, navigation, or tasks -- programmed through VS using SmartDocument and Tools for Office plugins.
So, you can program the panel such that the user, working in Office or Excel (and possibly PP -- haven't looked into that) can select the document to be edited from your application, do the edits, and save/attach the document, all from the Word interface. The programming behind the right side panel will automagically take care of detaching, and reattaching the document, and can also save the document to SQLServer, if you like.
Hope this helps.
If you are launching the file by using Process.Start method and passing file path as a parameter, you can use the WaitForExit() method to be notified when the user has closed the file.
I want to create a a application in actionscipt 3.0 that allows the user to listen to music and read descriptions of the music. For this to happen i suppose there should be a database where the textbits and music is located and then flash fetch the info when the correct buttons are pushed. The database will contain up to 100 tracks and textbits.
The application will function on a stand that won't have a connection to the internet.
What is the easiest way to do this in actionscript 3.0?
If any of you are familiar with UML and thinks this might help in understanding the problem, then here is use-case and flow-chart:

The easiest way to do what you're asking is probably to store the files in a directory on the machine the application is going to be running on, and then design an XML structure for storing your data. The XML is easily loaded in to Flash at runtime and is easily edittable.
Your other option would be running a database server on the machine, creating web services that run locally and push/pull the data from the database, and then call those services from your Flash application.
The first option is most definitely the easiest and should be able to provide exactly what you need. The second would be more geared towards a distributed Flash application where you needed a central data repository for the clients.
If you're building an AIR application, you can use the integrated SQLITE database. But, i agree with Justin, the easiest way is to use a XML file.
You can probably consider using "Local Shared Objects" which is a kind of cookie, with bigger capacity (100Kb by default, but you can change it). Compared to other solutions already proposed, it has then advantage of not requiring any web server.
