I have an object literal which is used as a configuration element and is looked up for keys.
customRendering:{
key1: func(){....},
key2: func(){....}
}
I have a situation where key2 and key3 can use the same function. Is there a way to assign the same function to both key2 and key3 without having to declare the function outside the object literal and without having to declare an extra key?
I was hoping I could do something like:
key2: key3: func(){....}

A safe way:
I don't know what I was thinking earlier. If you're fine with using a more verbose "literal" you can instantiate a custom function:
o = new function () {
this.foo = function () { console.log('works'); };
this.bar = this.foo;
};
This is a dirty nasty hack:
you could use a temporary variable to store the reference to the function while setting the object. Be careful to use a closure and to call var before using it so that you don't pollute the global namespace:
(function () {
var o, baz;
o = {
foo: baz = function () {console.log('works')},
bar: baz
}
//more code
}());
The reason I'm calling this a dirty nasty hack is that it makes the code less readable, it's harder to tell examining this code (especially if the object literal declaration was longer) where baz was set.
Better to just write the alias outside the object literal so that it's explicitly visible that it is an alias.
Note: the named function format doesn't work:

bar: baz

There's no way within an object literal to define an alias using a shared reference.
You can use an aliasing function, but it wont be an identical reference:
o = {
foo: function...
bar: function () { return this.foo() } //even better if you use `apply` or `call`
}
The typical way to share a reference is after the object literal, which sounds like what you wanted to avoid:
o = {
foo: function...
}
o.bar = o.foo;
Alternatively as you pointed out in your question (and for completeness) you could define the function outside of the object literal:
func = function () {/* code */};
o = {
foo: func,
bar: func
}

Using a self-executing anonymous function is another way of instantiating an object inline, and would make this entire question moot:
o = (function () {
var o = {
foo: function () {/*code*/}
}
o.bar = o.foo;
return o;
}());
Or like this:

var shared = function() { console.log("shared") };
return {
foo: shared,
bar: shared
}
}());

without having to declare the function outside the object literal
I think this part makes it impossible. However, while I use JavaScript all the time, I am not a professional JS ninja, so perhaps I am wrong.
Code for how I would do this (although it seems you already know you can do this, I thought it might be best to say it anyway):
customRendering = {};
customRendering.key1 = func(){....};
customRendering.key2 = customRendering.key1;

Define the function aside from the object:
var func = function() { ... };
...
customRendering: {
key1: func,
key2: func
}

Sorry I understood your question incorrectly.
Here is a possible solution:

Yes this is a problem in Javascript, but thankfully in TypeScript this problem is no more thanks to fat arrows! Yay!
Fat arrows are like anonymous functions but handle the this variable for you.
Let me show you:
fooFunction(fooProp:string):void {
// Pretend i set it up properly for $mdDialog to work
this.$mdDialog.show(options).then((answer: boolean) => {
if (answer) {
this.foo = "";
}
});
}
Using fat arrows this will now compile to this in JS:
FooCtrl.prototype.fooFunction = function (fooProp) {
var _this = this;
// Pretend i set it up properly for $mdDialog to work
this.$mdDialog.show(options).then(function (answer) {
if (answer) {
_this.foo = "";
}
});
};
So Typescript automatically creates a _this variable for you, so that you no longer have the problem. Pretty neat if you ask me.

The only reason to place the value in a local variable prior to calling a function is because you expect the class to go out of scope (i.e. something will happen to change the scope, such as a callback or asynchronous operation).
By putting the value in a local variable it becomes part of the closure for the function and the value is stored alongside the function itself.
This is one of the trickiest aspects of JavaScript - scope is kinda funky.
There are other options to solve this problem, including fat arrows...
() => {
// this.foo is now preserved
}
Or call / apply which allow you to set the scope.

Bind creates a new function that will force the this inside the function to be the parameter passed to bind().
Here's an example that shows how to use bind to pass a member method around that has the correct this:

Update: ECMAScript 2015 adds support for => functions. => functions are more compact and do not change the this pointer from their defining scope, so you may not need to use bind() as often. So, what does that mean?!
Well, let's take a function that looks like this :
var logProp = function(prop) {
console.log(this[prop]);
};
Now, let's take an object that looks like this :
var Obj = {
x : 5,
y : 10
};
We can bind our function to our object like this :
Obj.log = logProp.bind(Obj);
Now, we can run Obj.log anywhere in our code :
Obj.log('x'); // Output : 5
Obj.log('y'); // Output : 10
This works, because we bound the value of this to our object Obj.
Where it really gets interesting, is when you not only bind a value for this, but also for its argument prop :

Unlike with Obj.log, we do not have to pass x or y, because we passed those values when we did our binding.
Variables has local and global scopes. Let's suppose that we have two variables with the same name. One is globally defined and the other is defined inside a function closure and we want to get the variable value which is inside the function closure. In that case we use this bind() method. Please see the simple example below:

How does this work in JS anyway
The value of this in javascript is dependent always depends on what Object the function is called. The value of this always refers to the object left of the dot from where is the function is called. In case of the global scope this is window (or global in nodeJS). Only call, apply and bind can alter the this binding differently. Here is an example to show how the this keyword works:

How is bind used?
Bind can help in overcoming difficulties with the this keyword by having a fixed object where this will refer to. For example:

bind() create a new function, a new reference at a function it returns to you.
In parameter after this keyword, you pass in the parameter you want to preconfigure. Actually it does not execute immediately, just prepares for execution.
You can preconfigure as many parameters as you want.

Here the object {power : 2} is passed to powerOfNumber function using bind.

A really typical use is when you need to add an argument to a callback.
Callbacks can't have arguments.
So just "rewrite" the callback as above.

Another usage is that you can pass binded function as an argument to another function which is operating under another execution context.

this point set to null using afterSelectionChange in ngGrid

I'm writing an application using angular and typescript.
I'm using ng-grid and I have to handle the afterSelectionChange event.
I tried to set the event handler in two ways
this.$scope.settoriGridOptions.afterSelectionChange = this.afterSelectionChange;
where this.afterSelectionChange is a method of the controller class,
and
this.$scope.settoriGridOptions.afterSelectionChange = (... ) => {};
including the code inside, but in both cases the this pointer is incorrect and I cannot access to the services of the controller.
how can I fix this?
after a more tests and reading a few articles I see that the problem is the implicit passing of the this pointer as parameter in the function call.
if I write
$scope.filtroSoluzione = this.filtroSoluzione;
when called the this pointer is set to null, but if I write
$scope.filtroSoluzione = () => { return this.filtroSoluzione() };
or
$scope.filtroSoluzione = () => { .. inline code ... };
the this pointer I set correctly.
How can I have a more consistent behavior? I don't like to write always the code inside because this makes the class harder to read and navigate

Thanks for the extra information in your edits, I now see the problem.
class foo {
public afterSelectionChange = () => {
console.log(this);
}
}
When you declare your function like I did above, your this is the instance instead of what you are seeing know because it captures the this variable. It comes with a cost though, because now it creates a new afterSelectionChange function for every instance of your class. In this case I think it is still what you want though.
var foo = (function () {
function foo() {
var _this = this;
this.afterSelectionChange = function () {
console.log(_this);
};
}
foo.prototype.baz = function () {
console.log(this);
};
return foo;
})();
In the above code-gen you can see the difference when declaring the function with name = () => {} and the normal way.
Another solutions might be this:
this.$scope.settoriGridOptions.afterSelectionChange = this.afterSelectionChange.bind(this);
But I don't find that really nice either... (this should work with the normal public afterSelectionChange() {} declaration you are used to.

I have an on object in my directive, let's say:

I have a watch on A and on B. But when A is changed the watch of B is called as well. What I want is that when A is changed only "aWasChanged" will be called (even if B was changed as well) and "bWasChanged" will be called only when B is changed.
What do you mean under A is changed.
Generally the $watch() only checks object reference equality but not structure.
For example if you will write something like:
$scope.A.ddd = "ddd";
the $watch will do not catch that.
However deep-watch (with flag true) should take care about this case.

I suppose you mean if C will change ... so write your custom comparator like:
$scope.$watch(function () {
return $scope.A;
},
function (newValue, oldValue) {
if(newValue.C == oldValue.C){return;} // avoid B
/*...*/
}, true); // Object equality (not just reference).
The deep-watch a bit expensive so like you wrote will be good way:
scope.$watchCollection('A.B', function bWasChanged(){});
If you really wanted to do something like
$scope.foo.A = {
B: [],
C: 6
};
and have the watch on A fire but not on the B fire, you could always hack how angular is indexing it.
var key = $scope.foo.A.B.$$hashKey;
$scope.foo.A = {
B: [],
C: 6
};
$scope.foo.A.B.$$hashKey = key;

Is it possible to assign a function to a variable, then trigger it with scope?

I have a function that is assigned to a variable. I then assign this variable to $scope with the hope that it will call the function. But it doesn't work:
var func = myFunction("argument");
$scope.func;
I also tried:
var func = myFunction("argument");
$scope[func];
Is there a way I can get this to work?
You have a few things missing:
var someFn = function (arg) {
//do something with arg
}
You can then add this function to the scope:
$scope.fnOnScope = someFn;
You can then execute the function:
$scope.fnOnScope("argument");
Alternatively, you can just put the function on the scope in the first place.
That sounds a little dangerous (evaluating the function to execute "on the fly") but assuming that's what you want, it should be fairly easy if you place the function on an object.
var availableFunctions = {
functionToCall: function(arg) {
console.log(arg);
}
};
var func = myFunction("argument"); // assume this returns "functionToCall"
$scope.func = availableFunctions[func];
Is that closer to what you are looking for?
If the func is the name of the function that's already declared in window scope. Try:
var func = myFunction("argument");
window[func].call($scope);
