There are a few solutions here for Closeable tabs but they all depend on the owner of the collection to provide the closing functionality.
I thought perhaps it would be possible by creating a Custom TabControl and TabItem that this could be done in the CodeBehind.
The idea would be to somehow alert the TabControl from the TabItem that the close button has been pressed (perhaps with a bubbling event or something, please suggest) and then remove that particular items wrapped in that TabItem from the ItemsSource.
Problem is I'm not sure how or even if this is possible. Can you somehow remove items from a collection set as ItemsSource in a TabControl? Could we perhaps set a new DP sow we have full control over the Collection and just set that as ItemsSource in Code Behind.
Anyone done this or has any ideas hwo to do this. Is it even possible at all?
Even if that's technically possible, I'd advise sticking to M-V-VM. Let the owner of the collection i.e. the ViewModel control adding/deleting items from the collection.
Let the View be thin and sync with the VM's collection via data-binding. This keeps the Views from getting complex and eliminates the GUI which is a deterrent to testability.
You should find that as the path of least WPF resistance.
This came up in our application, so I figured I would post my solution. ClosableTabControl closes any tab by removing the item from the bound ItemsSource. This is partially scraped from other solutions (Szymon Kobalczyk et al.).

I´ve tried to change the IsMouseOver & IsFocused BorderBrush of a TextBox.
But it seems not to take affect, I always get this ugly standart blue color.
My style is inside a ResourceDictionary.
It´s working perfectly fine, except the problem with changing the BorderBrush.

Unless you edit the template of the control, you are pretty limited in what you can change. Here is the default template for the WPF TextBox, so change it to fit your desired style: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/wpf/controls/textbox-styles-and-templates
I want to create a window that look sth like that:
On the left side, you can see a navigation control.
Exactly one item has to be selected (item 1 by default).
Depend on which item you have selected, you see the matching page on the right side. This page can have next pages, which can be navigated via "Next" or "Back" buttons.
I´ve tried using a listview for the navigation, but it´s hard to get a styling like this. Maybe another control is more suitable also for the functionality.
So, I have 2 Questions:
1) Which control is most suitable for the navigation and how to style it that way?
2) How can I dynamically switch the Pages on the right side (xaml only)?
I just want to create a prototype, so I only want to use xaml and no code behind.
My internet research has so far not much helped me (I have read a lot about navigation and styling but the most is with code behind or using mvvm or sth.. nothing that could help me directly with these specific requirements).
Any designers or xaml pros out there? :)
#Veritas,
Assuming the following markup, the base style already closely ressembles your mockup requirements.
<Window x:Class="TabControl.MainWindow"
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
Title="MainWindow" Height="350" Width="525">
<Grid>
<TabControl TabStripPlacement="Left">
<TabItem Header="Item1">
<TextBlock Text="Hosted content of page 1"></TextBlock>
</TabItem>
<TabItem Header="Item2">
<TextBlock Text="Hosted content of page 2"></TextBlock>
</TabItem>
<TabItem Header="Item3">
<TextBlock Text="Hosted content of page 3"></TextBlock>
</TabItem>
</TabControl>
</Grid>
</Window>
which more or less gives the following result:
but just for the sake of your question, if you would like to edit the template of the tabControl, in visual studio you can enable the document Outline (Crtl-W, U) , look for your TabControl, Right click and select Edit template > Edit a copy.
From here, either you restyle the TabControl for every instance of the application (it will create a non-keyed ressource), or a named ressource that you can apply as you wish, assuming you would want to create multiple styles (re: keyed ressources).
This is the default TabControl markup generated from a windows 8.1 box (note that there are some subtle variances from one version to another, but this will get you started)

Note that this formulation "

if by chance you have blend installed, you will have more flexibility in how these templates are previewed, and may prove easier to style your colors and fonts.
If it's the TabItem you want to customize, follow the same procedure. The tabItem controls the squared Tab + label component such as this preview here:

I programmatically add tabitems to a tabcontrol. I have a custom tabItem with two buttons in the header, one to close the tab, the other to do some other functionality (it triggers an ascending or descending sort). The content of close button is a constant, the content of the other button changes based on a boolean value in the tab's datacontext. Only the buttons in the selected tab show in the tab header.
Initially, both buttons will show on the tab created last. The problem I'm experiencing is that as I select tabs, the content of the close button on the newly selected tab will be visible, as it should be, but the content of the bound button is gone (the button is there).
I should point out the content of the problemmatic button is one of two polygons depending on the value of the binding source.
I should also point out that if i click the empty button the appropriate image appears on the tab header.
Adding more confusion is that the tooltip property attached to the button, behaves correctly - it displays the appropriate tooltip text based on the binding source.
The custom TabItem is mostly created from a ResourceDictionary which I've included.
Please help, I admit my wpf knowledge is limited.

I solved my own problem. In my attempt at solving this, I went with a togglebutton and an image instead of a regular button and a polygon. I then realized I was missing the trigger condition for the selected state of the tabitem. The final solution is included here, for anyone interested. By the way, the idea, and the majority of the style, to create a control that inherits from a tabitem came from this site: http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/dpatra/closable-tab-control-in-wpf/.
Lastly, for those presumptuous folks out there, this problem had nothing to do with MVVM.

Is there a simple way to set the background brush of all inactive tabs in a WPF TabControl? I want to emulate the look of VS 2010 on a TabControl--the background color of the control's inactive tabs should match the background color of the window in which the TabControl is sited, so that you see only the text of the tab, and not the tab itself.
I know it will take a ControlTemplate to do it; I am trying to figure out what to put in the control template. Put another way, How do I specify that a particular brush should be applied to all inactive tabs? Thanks for your help.
Here is the solution: As Stephen said, add a trigger to the control template. It's actually a property trigger, and it only needs to be set for the inactive state. So we set the trigger for IsSelected = false. We target the border (Bd in the default control template for a TabItem) of the TabItem and set its Background to the color we want (I use RelativeSource FindAncestor to match the grid on which the tab is placed). Then we set Bd's BorderThickness to 0, and we're done:
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="false">
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="Bd" Value="{Binding Path=Background, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type Grid}}}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" TargetName="Bd" Value="0" />
</Trigger>
I put the trigger in the default template, just below the IsSelected = true trigger.
Note that the trigger is hard-coded to search for a Grid ancestor as the source of the inactive tab background color (AncestorType={x:Type Grid}). That's because I set my view background in the Grid that I use as my layout root. You will need to change the AncestorType if you use a different layout root control, or if you set your view background color elsewhere (such as in the <Window> tag).
BTW, you can also use the IsSelected = true trigger to change the Background of the active tab header from white, to match the TabControl background color:
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="true">
<Setter Property="Panel.ZIndex" Value="1"/>
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="Bd" Value="{Binding Path=Background, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type TabControl}}}"/>
</Trigger>
For those who like this visual representation, here is the complete control template. It will be applied automatically to any TabControl within its scope. Simply add this markup to the section of your XAML window (or import it from a ResourceDictionary), and your TabControl will get the VS 2010 look. Remember to change the FindAncestor proeprty so that the template will find the correct background color.

Yes. Define the brushes, and then in your style for the tab, have a trigger for its active state, and when it is ACTIVE set it to one brush, and when the trigger fires because it is inactive set it to the other.
This can be done entirely in the XAML.
I'm just starting with WPF and I'm facing a visual issue after displaying TabControl on the Left and Rotating TabItem text header 90 degrees.
The issue is that the top border of the TabItem header is not showing.
The code is this:
<Window x:Class="WPF_Exemplo1.Window1"
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
Title="Window1" Height="675" Width="900" ResizeMode="NoResize" WindowStyle="None" WindowState="Maximized">
<Grid>
<TabControl Margin="12,85.74,98.601,167.193" Name="tabControl1" TabStripPlacement="Left">
<TabItem Name="tabItem1" FlowDirection="LeftToRight" FontSize="22" Height="60">
<TabItem.Header>
<StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal">
<Image Height="40" Width="40" Margin="20,0,0,0" VerticalAlignment="Center"></Image>
<TextBlock Margin="25,0,25,0" VerticalAlignment="Center">Item 1</TextBlock>
</StackPanel>
</TabItem.Header>
<TabItem.LayoutTransform>
<TransformGroup>
<RotateTransform Angle="-90"/>
</TransformGroup>
</TabItem.LayoutTransform>
<Grid />
</TabItem>
</TabControl>
</Grid>
</Window>
By default tab items hide their right border when selected. This creates a visual appearance of it blending into the tab content. However, since you rotated the tab item 90 degrees it no longer serves this purpose. To get the correct visual reaction you will need to edit the TabItem's ControlTemplate. The easiest way to do this is to start with a copy of the template (if you have Blend you can simply go to Edit Template Copy). If you don't have Blend then you can use the default resources created by my version of Blend (below). Then edit the correct border properties to create the visual that you want.
