I have a large folder of .cbr's, and I'm renaming them by issue number to correctly order them. What do I need to include in the ren line to have each file increment the number in the file name via windows command prompt? I'll be doing this frequently so I'll make this a .bat file.
For example, where n = initial number and m = final number: n.cbr, (n+1).cbr, ..., (m-1).cbr, m.cbr
The .bat thusfar:
ren *.cbz *.cbr
ren *.cbr <increment numbers n through m>.cbr
Alternatively, how do I trim each file name so that only the numbers are left before the extension? (from issue1.cbr to 1.cbr) via either a .bat or script host file?
Try this batch script.
#echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
set /a count=0
for /f "tokens=*" %%a in ('dir /b /od *.cbr') do (
echo ren "%%a" !count!.cbr
set /a count+=1
)
It renames all the files with a incremental counter. The order of the files is preserved with the /OD option of the DIR command, that sorts the files list by its modified timestamp.
After careful testing, remove the ECHO command.
For more information, read HELP DIR, HELP SET and HELP FOR.

I'm trying to zip up 27 exe files in one go using a batch file. The purpose of this file is to create .7z files for a modified HBCD menu. This file is located in, ...\Documents\CD\HBCD\Programs the exe files are in ...\Documents\CD\HBCD\Programs\Files\SysinternalsSuite
I keep getting:

I keep searching around and trying different things but I can't get it to work.

Once it gets to the 7 Zip line it gives the error. I realized that the nfname variable was empty so I tried:
set nfname=!%%G:.exe=!
That didn't work so I tried deleting that and going with:
..\..\7z.exe a -t7z !fname:.exe=!.7z "!fname!" -mx5 -sdel -oC:%DEST%
That didn't work so I tried putting different things in quotes one by one and then everything:
"..\..\7z.exe" a -t7z "!fname:.exe=!.7z" "!fname!" -mx5 -sdel -oC:"%DEST%"
Still nothing. What am I missing?

The pushd and cd removed. Unsure why 7z.exe would be
located 2 directories up from where the input executable
directory is located. 7z.exe is now located 2 directories
up from the script directory.
The -o switch for 7z.exe is only for extraction as
mentioned in the help file so is omitted.
Double quoted set of variables to avoid any trailing spaces.
The for loop changed to simple type as it gives the file
paths required without need of using dir.
EnableDelayedExpansion removed as the for variables
uses modifiers to get fullpath, name, drive etc. See
for /? about modifiers available.
Removed timeout as it complains if stdin is used and see
no reason to use it for this task.
Removed obsolete goto commands that go to the next line
with a command.
How do I make a log file from this code. This has been answered a ton, but this file is huge and I want a simple log file. As you see I also tried to add a log file names RandomNamesLog.log. See if the output goes there.
I want all the code to be outputted into the log file, with error messages and confirm messages, like removing the #ECHO OFF value.
If you need more on what I want, please tell me.

Once you are happy with it edit your opening question explaining what it is you want to have in the log file and how you need it to look.
I use this. it seems to work.
It just starts a log file and maintains logs.
You can set logpath and logname (base name) then you call this create_logfile
It creates a semi-random log file.
Now you write to the set logfile

I'm trying to figure out how to make :onetime happen once, so that it sends the username to cfg.txt
Anyone know how?
I have cleaned up your code and provided a completed working script, and noted where you will put your game code.
Although Delayed expansion is not needed for this code, I have placed it in the script as you had it in your original script.
Please be mindful of the variable names I have chosen as they are used in several locations.
I have tried to comment the code with info on what it is doing, and I would be happen to explain further if needed.
I'd like to actually play your game when you are completed with it, if I may. :)
Hope that helps.

I am trying to figure out how to loop through a list of SET variables and perform a simple script. This is run in batch mode. Any tips on how to adapt the following code so that it loops through the SET dir variable list?
SET YYYY=%date:~10,4%
ECHO Its %YYYY%
SET dir=dir1, dir2, dir3, dir4,...dirN
ECHO %dir%
:: Loop through each SET dir and perform the following.
:: Create a current year dir in remote directory
C:
cd "C:\my\dir\here\%dir%"
if not exist %YYYY% mkdir %YYYY%
:: Copy files from local to remote for each sub directory
E:
cd "E:\FTP\localdrive\%dir%"
XCOPY "E:\FTP\localdrive\%dir%" "C:\my\dir\here\%dir%\%YYYY%" /S /Y
After valuable comments from users, this appears to work but fails to make dirs 2 through 4.
SET YYYY=%date:~10,4%
ECHO Its %YYYY%
SET dir=dir1, dir2, dir3, dir4
FOR /F "tokens=1 delims=," %%a in (%dir%) do (
if not exist %dir md E:\my\dir\here\%dir%
)
Revised to below and still fails - "%%a was unexpected at this time" on what I think was the md E:\my\dir\here\%%a
SET YYYY=%date:~10,4%
ECHO Its %YYYY%
SET dir=dir1, dir2, dir3, dir4
FOR /F "tokens=1 delims=," %%a in (%dir%) do (
md E:\my\dir\here\%%a
)
Just for information, an alternative to the FOR loop method:

I wrote a windows batch script to check and move files to another directory based on the list I put in a notepad file named list.txt. But I have no idea that how to set the while-loop. Only to jump out of the subroute when the condition fulfill.
In C Programming, we could write like this by setting a while-loop direcly. But seems in windows batch is quite different.
All I want is like this:
Directory A:
1. A.txt
2. B.txt
3. list.txt (By line sequential with filename want to move)
4. process.bat
Directory B:
None of files (Then move a file by order of line set in list.txt) OR
A.txt (If already existed a text file in directory, process.bat will pause before A.txt disappear)
Process.bat
#echo off
