Is it possible to have "column headers" on a combo box bound to multiple items? For example a combo box that displays a persons name. The combo box would display John Doe. But I'd like to display column headers:
First Last
John Doe
Jane Doe
Jimmy Doe
Is this possible without the use of a data grid?
What about a simple solution that includes the use of a data grid? I found one solution for embedding a data grid into a combo box but it looks difficult and requires MS Blend.
I'd be happy if I could just get some headers as the first row in the drop down.

Here is my xaml code with HB's attempt that produces a compile error as mentioned in the comments.

Example:
<ComboBox Name="cb" Grid.IsSharedSizeScope="True" ItemsSource="{DynamicResource items}">
<ComboBox.Resources>
<CompositeCollection x:Key="items">
<ComboBoxItem IsEnabled="False">
<Grid TextElement.FontWeight="Bold">

<TextBlock Grid.Column="2" Text="{Binding Occupation}"/>
</Grid.Children>
</Grid>
</DataTemplate>
</ComboBox.Resources>
</ComboBox>
Note that getting the Collection-binding right is not that easy because there is neither DataContext nor VisualTree to rely on, ElementName and RelativeSource does not work, this is because CompositeCollection is just a collection, not a FrameworkElement.
Other than that the way this is done is via Grids that have shared size columns. The DataTemplate is applied automatically via the DataType.
Edit: Setting the header-ComboBoxItem's IsHitTestVisible property to False is not enough since it still can be selected using the keyboard. I now changed it to IsEnabled="False" which fades out the item a bit. You could probably re-template that item to not do that. Or if you find another way of disabling it from selection that would of course work out too.
The simplest way to add columns headers to combobox is to use listview in combobox.
The following code is give the solution to it.
<ComboBox HorizontalAlignment="Center"
IsTextSearchEnabled="False" Width="200"
IsEditable="True" Text="{Binding }">
<ListView ItemsSource="{Binding YOURITEMSOURCE}"
SelectedItem="{Binding Path=SELECTEDITEMSOURCE}"
Height="200" ScrollViewer.VerticalScrollBarVisibility="Visible">
<ListView.View>
<GridView>
<GridViewColumn Width="130" Header="Name" DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Name}" />
<GridViewColumn Width="130" Header="Occupation" DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Occupation}" />
<GridViewColumn Width="130" Header="Age" DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Age}" />
<GridViewColumn Width="130" Header="Salary" DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Salary}" />
</GridView>
</ListView.View>
</ListView>
</ComboBox>
I liked Nandha's answer because this was what I was trying to achieve. However, the text field of the combo box will not work correctly.
Since I am lazy, to get around this I created a StackPanel of Horizontal orientation, with a TextBox bound to a field from the selected item, and the Combo Box with the embedded ListView. The Combo Box now has a width of 20 so just the down arrow shows (you can play with the width and margins to get just the right look. This makes the text box look like a combo box, with all the benefits of the ListView, and much less coding.
I hope this helps.enter image description here

Apply the View you want to the Tag property of the ComboBox
<ComboBox ItemsSource={Binding Items}>
<ComboBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<!-- Enter your item template shown as the selected item. -->

Width="100"/>
</GridView>
</ComboBox.Tag>
</ComboBox>
Thats all folks.
I like H.B.'s answer, but unfortunately when I use it I see databinding errors in the output for the header ComboBoxItem's HorizontalContentAlignment and VerticalContentAlignment properties:
Cannot find source for binding with reference 'RelativeSource
FindAncestor, AncestorType='System.Windows.Controls.ItemsControl',
AncestorLevel='1''. BindingExpression:Path=HorizontalContentAlignment;
DataItem=null; target element is 'ComboBoxItem' (Name=''); target
property is 'HorizontalContentAlignment' (type 'HorizontalAlignment')
These don't crash the program, but they do clutter up the output and cause perceptible delays when running debug builds. Whatever's causing them seems to be deep in the bowels of ComboBox or ComboBoxItem; in any case, I couldn't figure out any way to prevent them (setting these properties manually or via a Style didn't help). So I ended up going with a slight variation. This is longer and hackier than I like things to be, but it gets the job done:
<ComboBox Name="cb" Grid.IsSharedSizeScope="True" ItemsSource="{DynamicResource items}">
<ComboBox.Resources>
<!-- We'll use this dummy value to represent the header row. -->
<!-- The type and value are arbitrary; we just need a unique type -->

I'm relatively new to WPF, so bear with me.
I'm trying to set the background colour of a combo box when it receives focus. I'm setting a trigger in the control template for it's togglebutton to change colour on mouse over, and when it receives focus. Mouse over works fine, but when I tab into the combobox nothing happens until I tab a second time(It changes colour then).
So what I want is for the background colour to change when the user first tabs in.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to achieve this by adding an additional IsKeyboardFocused trigger alongside your MouseOver and IsFocused triggers in the ToggleButton control template:
<Trigger Property="IsKeyboardFocused" Value="True">
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Background" Value="{StaticResource YellowBrush1}" />
</Trigger>
MSDN: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb613567%28v=vs.110%29.aspx (Scroll down to IsKeyboardFocused section)
UPDATE:
The problem in this case is to do with where you're setting your triggers. You're relying on the ToggleButton to have focus so that you can change it's background colour - but in actual fact you want to the content of the combobox to have focus.
The reason you have to TAB twice to apparently achieve focus is because for each ComboBox you're tabbing between the control's ToggleButton, and then the ComboBox selected item (through the ContentPresenter).
One possible fix: First you need to prevent your ToggleButton in your ComboBox template from getting focus:
<ToggleButton Name="ToggleButton"
ClickMode="Press"
Focusable="False"
IsTabStop="False" ... >
I've actually removed ALL of the Focusable="False" setters from your ToggleButton template as they're not needed.
Then make your ToggleButton template transparent (Border.Background), and remove the existing triggers that affect the Border.Background colour.
Now move to your ComboBox template and give the root <Grid> a name. I've called it templateRoot in my example.
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="ComboBox">
<Grid Name="templateRoot">
<ToggleButton Name="ToggleButton" ... >
And now set the background colour for your combobox using that templateRoot. You can add the Triggers you removed from the ToggleButton template to the ComboBox template:
<Trigger Property="IsKeyboardFocused" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="templateRoot" Value="{StaticResource YellowBrush1}" />
</Trigger>
... and the other triggers.
With this approach, you're relying on the ComboBox control to trigger your changes when it has focus.
If this solution doesn't work for your needs, then I hope at least you can see where the problem you're having originates.
You shouldn't need to go to the level of editing the template for this, just the style:
<ComboBox>
<ComboBoxItem>Apple</ComboBoxItem>
<ComboBoxItem>Banana</ComboBoxItem>
<ComboBoxItem>Pear</ComboBoxItem>
<ComboBox.Style>
<Style TargetType="{x:Type ComboBox}">
<Style.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsFocused" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Violet" />
</Trigger>
</Style.Triggers>
</Style>
</ComboBox.Style>
</ComboBox>

The problem appears when I need to group certain items using expander as a group container.
in .cs
...
ICollectionView view = CollectionViewSource.GetDefaultView(Sensors);
view.GroupDescriptions.Add(new PropertyGroupDescription("GroupNumber"));
lstBox.ItemsSource = view;
...
in .xaml
<!--Same Template and Style-->
...
...
<Style x:Key="GroupContainerStyle" TargetType="{x:Type GroupItem}">
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type GroupItem}">
<Expander IsExpanded="True">
<Expander.Header>
<StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal">
<TextBlock Text="Group #" />
<TextBlock Text="{Binding Name}" />
</StackPanel>
</Expander.Header>
<Expander.Content>
<ItemsPresenter />
</Expander.Content>
</Expander>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
...
<ListBox Name="lstBox" Focusable="False"
SelectionChanged="lstBox_SelectionChanged"
HorizontalContentAlignment="Stretch"
ItemTemplate="{StaticResource SensorTileTemplate}"
ItemContainerStyle="{StaticResource ContainerStyle}">
<ListBox.GroupStyle>
<GroupStyle ContainerStyle="{StaticResource GroupContainerStyle}" />
</ListBox.GroupStyle>
</ListBox>
This code works and groups items but items become invisible.
So without grouping items display correctly but with grouping expanders show nothing in it.
I think there is something about ItemsPresenter in Expander but can't figure out what.
The problem was in one third party theme I use in my app. That theme has a ListBox template like:
<Style TargetType="{x:Type ListBox}">
...
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ListBox}">
<Grid>
<Border x:Name="Border" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" CornerRadius="2" Background="{DynamicResource ControlBackgroundBrush}" />
<ScrollViewer Margin="1" Style="{DynamicResource NuclearScrollViewer}" Focusable="false" Background="{x:Null}">
<StackPanel Margin="1,1,1,1" IsItemsHost="true" />
</ScrollViewer>
</Grid>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="false">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="{DynamicResource DisabledBackgroundBrush}" TargetName="Border" />
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="{DynamicResource DisabledBorderBrush}" TargetName="Border" />
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsGrouping" Value="true">
<Setter Property="ScrollViewer.CanContentScroll" Value="false" />
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
So I use an ItemsPresenter instead of the StackPanel in that template and everything works now.
I'm cleaning up App.xaml and moved some styles into Generic.xaml. But then, these styles don't have any effect. Why? Is this correct thing to do to make App.xaml tidy?
EDIT (to include some source code):
The goal is to restyle WPF DataGrid to make the scrollbars run from top to bottom and from left to right (default style excludes row and column header).
The style is working when I put it in App.xaml. Because it's a big chunk of code, I'd like to move it out of App.xaml into /Themes/DataGridEx.xaml. By the way, DataGridEx is my extended class derived from WPF DataGrid.
This is my DataGrid.xaml:
<ControlTemplate x:Key="SelectAllButtonTemplate" TargetType="{x:Type Button}">
<Grid>
<Rectangle x:Name="Border"
Fill="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}}"
SnapsToDevicePixels="True" />
<Polygon x:Name="Arrow"
HorizontalAlignment="Right"
VerticalAlignment="Bottom"
Margin="8,8,3,3"
Opacity="0.15"
Fill="Black"
Stretch="Uniform"
Points="0,10 10,10 10,0" />
</Grid>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True">
<Setter TargetName="Border" Property="Stroke" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlDarkBrushKey}}" />

This is my Themes/Generic.xaml:
<ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
<ResourceDictionary Source="/Themes/DataGridEx.xaml"/>
<ResourceDictionary Source="/Themes/GridComboBox.xaml"/>
</ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
This is my App.xaml:
<Application x:Class="MyApp.App"
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
xmlns:local="clr-namespace:MyApp.Common"
DispatcherUnhandledException="Application_DispatcherUnhandledException">
<!--StartupUri="MainWindow.xaml"-->
<Application.Resources>
<ResourceDictionary x:Key="rd">
<ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
<ResourceDictionary Source="Themes/Generic.xaml"/>
</ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
</ResourceDictionary>
....
</Application.Resources>
</Application>
With this code, I got a run-time XamlParseException: "Failed to create a 'Type' from the text 'local:DataGridEx'". However, if I comment out the MergedDictionaries in App.xaml, it doesn't complain, but the style doesn't take effect either.
Another interesting thing is that, in this generic.xaml I have two dictionaries. If I remove the ResourceDictionary from App.xaml, GridComboBox.xaml is working fine, but DataGridEx.xaml is not.
You need to merge it into App.xaml like this:
<Application.Resources>
<ResourceDictionary>
<ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
<ResourceDictionary Source="Generic.xaml"/>
</ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
</ResourceDictionary>
</Application.Resources>
If you are already doing that, you need to post your code to give more info.
EDIT:
Try following the instructions here. Particularly, the parts about having to set your dictionaries to Resource and using the full path in Source.
I encountered this issue and the simplest fix for this is to remove the x:Key property of the style to be used in the ResourceDictionary.
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type Button}">
I have a listbox i want that except first index all other items are scrollable.

here is my sample project updated from this thread:
WPF: Refine the look of a grouped ComboBox vs. a grouped DataGrid -sample attached -
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ru8hju (VS2010 .Net 4.0 project)
My question is now HOW can I add a "column header" like stackpanel horizontal with 2 TextBlocks ADD to my existing ComboBox ControlTemplate ABOVE the ScrollViewer when I have a custom ComboBoxItem stuff and there is the ItemPresenter in the default ComboBox ControlTemplate.
Thats my existing grouped uneditable ComboBox. Over the Scrollviewr (above the December...) I want 2 Textblocks.
How can I do that with MY XAML code see at the bottom:

UPDATE:
OK very good news, I found my old code again which I thought I lost it somehow :)
Below you see the Style for a ComboBox. I have pasted some own xaml there see my comment
inside the ControlTemplate below. There is the Column Header of a former ComboBox.
What I want now is to merge this Column Header with my above project and its custom ComboBoxItem
style.
<Border x:Name="DropDownBorder" BorderBrush="DarkBlue" BorderThickness="2" Background="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.WindowBrushKey}}">

combobox with column header =>
http://img573.imageshack.us/img573/4202/columnheader.png
Hello,
UPDATE 2:
This is the code with a column header but trashed POPUP + Scrollbars do not work properly... I could not post the code due to 30000 chars limitation lol so grab it here:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/8puii8
Update again
Also fixed it in your example, just changed the Popup from the one I had below. Download if from here.
