Multiple MVP presenters: How to communicate and share information? - winforms

I am designing a Winforms MDI application following MVP pattern, and I'm stuck on some problems related to communication between different part of my application.
Here a simple picture of this application:
1 -On the left a treeview
2- In the middle a drawing component
3- on the right, a "property" form.
These 3 parts are managed with a MVP triad ( well ,not really , Model is common to all triads)
When I click on a node on the treeview, I want to see a drawing of the corresponding selected object in the drawing component ,and I want to see some properties corresponding to this selected object in the property form.
My basic question are :
a) Where to store "Selected object " information ?
b) How to warn Drawing component and property form that "Selected object " has changed ?
I started to imagine some solutions but I am quite unhappy.
I don't buy putting "Selected object " in the Model and perform observer synchronization.
"Selected object " does not belong to the Model
SO I imagine, I would store this information in a presenter
If I put "Selected object " in Treeview presenter, it seems to me that both Presenter for drawing component and Presenter for Property form will have to hold a reference on treeview presenter, to retrieve this information.
It creates some coupling between presenters , and I don't like also.
So I am looking for other ideas, and or comments. thanks for your time.

I don't know how exactly your code is built but may be you could use Retlang. Then you could easily pass list of IDs in the message and handle this message wherever you like.
Also it would be quite interesting for me to hear how you managed to solve your problem a year ago.

How much coupling is appropriate between ViewModels in MVVM

I'm developing a fairly simple WPF application to display an object hierarchy plus detail of the selected object, with a UserControl wrapping a TreeView in the left pane (the tree control), and another UserControl wrapping a ListView/GridView on the right (the details control).
The tree control uses MVVM following this Josh Smith article reasonably closely, and has a number of ViewModel types all derived from the same base type, TreeViewModel. The main window is set up using a MainWindowViewModel as in this Josh Smith article and exposes the TreeViewModel used to populate the first generation of the tree control.
However, when I want to populate the details pane on the right, I have the problem that the SelectedItem of the tree control is derived from TreeViewModel when I need a completely different type of ViewModel for the details pane which will expand the object into a table of properties/values using reflection.
So, questions:
Is it appropriate for the MainWindowViewModel to expose the TreeViewModel for the tree control? I believe that the answer here is yes, but am open to suggestions to the contrary.
How should the selected item in the tree control be adapted to the right ViewModel type for the details pane? One option seems to be that the MainWindowViewModel tracks the selected item in the tree and does the adaption, exposing it as another property, but I'm not sure if there is a better solution.
I'm new to WPF and the MVVM pattern, so please excuse the fairly basic nature of the question. I've done a fair bit of reading around the background of the pattern, looked at some sample apps etc. but I can't quite find anything specific enough to make me confident of the answer. I also realise that MVVM may be overkill for an app this simple, but I'm using it partly as a learning exercise.

I belive yes. The model should hide the look from teh logic FOR THE LOOK, but it can not hide thigns like logical structure.

IMHO not.
Working on the similar problem I came to the conclusion that
object Tag { get; set; }
property is inevitable :( except maybe for some rare situations (only 1 type of objects in the entire treeview).

If you're really, really concerned about this, you can build a higher-order view model class that exposes two different properties - one of type TreeViewModel and one of type DetailsViewModel. Then the main window's view model will expose the same object to both the tree control and the details control, but the logical structure of the two view types will be decoupled from one another.
Logically, the selected item in the tree control and the item that's appearing in the details control are the same thing. While the details control doesn't present information about the thing's parent/child relationships, and the tree control doesn't present information about the thing's name/value pairs, it's still the same thing. There's probably not really any need to be too concerned over the fact that a single object representing a thing exposes a property that only one view of that thing uses.

MVVM - Closing a tab when a record is deleted

I'm not really sure how to do this in the best MVVM way...
Basically, my main app opens up a search window that shows all records in a TabPanel. Then if a record is double clicked a new tab is opened with that record. Now, I'm trying to keep things MVVM, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to close the gui tabitem when a person deletes the record (why keep it open if the record is gone).
The only way I can figure out how to do it now is to pass the instance of the TabItem as a parameter of the DeleteCommand, which to me seems like a big no-no, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to accomplish this.
If you were going to do this in the true MVVM sense, then double-clicking a record would, behind the scenes, add a record to a collection of records. That record collection is the datasource for the tabs in your control. Simply removing that item from the list (usually an ObservableCollection<T>) would result in the UI updating and the tab being removed.
Which approach are you currently using to show the tab?

That is not "true" MVVM. It doesn't matter if the tabs can be more than just records. You should create View Models which abstract those details, then just put your view model instances (RecordViewModel, ReportViewModel, etc) in an observable collection and bind to that. Use datatemplates to render the correct views for each tab's content based on the type of view model the current tab is being bound to.
Josh Smith wrote an amazing article describing how MVVM works. The sample application does something very similar to what you want to do.
The application displays a TabControl which displays 1 or more workspaces. The workspace area displays two different kinds of items. The tab items are closable. Take a look, I'm sure this will solve your problem.
WPF Apps With The Model-View-ViewModel Design Pattern

Multiple "sibling" controls, one-at-a-time visible, MVVM

I've got what I think is a fairly simple problem in Silverlight, and I'd like to solve it using MVVM principles, largely as a way of enhancing my own understanding.
Let's say I have a simple LOB app that's designed to let me load up and edit a single Employee (just an example, for the sake of explanation). In my example, Employee is made up of a number of complex objects - an Employee has a ContactInfo, a Skillset, an EmploymentHistory, an AwardsEarned, etc. The idea is that I can have this app load up a single employee and get access to a number of different editor screens. Each component of an Employee has its own editor screen.
Visually, the app just ha a left-hand nav bar and a main view on the right side. The nav bar just lets me type in an employee number and load it into memory as the "active" employee. It has a simple list of links - clicking a link should load the appropriate editor screen on the right side.
There are a couple concepts that I don't think I understand well enough, and I'm having trouble proceeding. I know there's always more than one way to skin a cat, especially when it comes to WPF/Silverlight/XAML/MVVM, but I'm having trouble thinking through all the different concepts and their repurcussions.
View-First or ViewModel First
After much thinking about MVVM, what seems most natural to me is the concept of viewmodel composition that Josh Smith seems to promote in his often-quoted article. It seems like the idea here is that you literally model your UI by composing viewmodels together, and then you let the viewmodels render themselves via typed DataTemplates. This feels like a very good separation of concerns to me, and it also makes viewmodel communication very direct and easy to understand.
Of course, Silverlight doesn't have the DataType property on DataTemplates, to many complaints: one, two. Regardless, what I see promoted much more often than viewmodel composition is a more view-first design, where the viewmodel for the view is typically instantiated in the view's XAML or via a DI container, meaning that you can't hand it any parameters. I'm having a really hard time understanding this: how is a ViewModel supposed to serve a Model to a View if I never get to tell it what data is in the model? Reaching through a view to get to its viewmodel doesn't seem to make sense either. I'm very hazy in this area but it seems the accepted answer "use a mediator/lightweight messaging framework." I'm just going through some tutorials now on the messaging system in MVVMLight and I'll be looking at similar stuff, if for nothing else than simply to understand the concepts, but if anyone can shed some light on this I'd very much appreciate it. Anything involving Unity/Prism or MEF is valid, but I haven't gotten that far in my quest for knowledge yet :-)
Instantiating Views and Selecting Them
Theoretically (I say that because SL doesn't support DataTemplate DataType), the viewmodel composition approach could make this very simple. I could have the right side of the screen be a content control whose Content property is bound to a property called ActiveEditor. A parameterized command for the hyperlinks would set ActiveEditor to a given viewmodel.
With a more view-first approach, how would I proceed with this? The first thing that comes to mind is instantiating all of the controls in the XAML of the main view.
Is manipulating the Content property of a ContentControl a good way to go for this kind of situation, or am I better off doing something like setting visibility on each individual control?
The ViewModel (VM) is written so that it is 'wired up' to the Model but has no knowledge at all of the View - in fact, this is what makes it very good to unit test (see NUnit) as it has no idea, and less does it care, whether it is being used by a UI or a Test Framework.
The VM exposes public CLR properties which implement the ICommand interface, the View, having instantiated a VM using (generally speaking anyway) its default constructor, then binds its Buttons/Hyperlinks etc to these Command properties like. So, for example, you may have a VM that exposes a CloseCommand to exit the app, the View may contain a MenuItem that binds to that command, such as:
<MenuItem Header="E_xit" Command="{Binding Path=CloseCommand}" />
Now, the VM would also expose a public ObservableCollection of objects that you want to display in your UI. Whether you populate this ObservableCollection as part of the VM constructor, or whether you do it via a UI interaction (say another Command assigned to a Button click) is up to you but the end result is that you bind a View control to this exposed ObservableCollection in XAML like:
<y:DataGrid ItemsSource="{Binding Breakdown}"/>
or equivelant for whatever control you are using to display the data (not sure off the top of my head what elements a DataGrid has in Silverlight as opposed to WPF).
Meanwhile...: The Mediator pattern is used for VM's to interact with each other, not for the View to interact with the VM. For example, you might have a custom TreeView that has its own VM on the same View as the main chart screen. In this case you could use a Mediator for the TreeView's VM to communicate with the Charts VM.
As for the last bit of your question, I think set up a basic framework using Josh Smith way in the article you mentioned and use that method to add additional ViewModels to the right hand side of your silverlight app.

VB WPF MVC (Model + View + ?)

I have an old VB6 application. I want to recreate it in VB.Net using WPF. But I am a bit confused about the "Model View Controller"-pattern. I have two books about design patterns (GoF and J.Bishop) afair this pattern is indeed not mentioned inside one of the two books. I have also searched the internet I found some java-examples. But I have still no clue how I should use MVC-Pattern (should I?) in my new WPF-application.
Let's say for example my model (in fact it is more complex) is only a wheel rim (circle) with the properties Manufacturer, Diameter and Depth. The user should be able to modify the properties using textboxes and ComboBoxes.
Could somebody create a small example that explaines the MVC-Pattern with WPF?
Of course I like reusable classes to have a feasible concept throughout the whole application.

Here's a "brief" description of what the MVC pattern is and how I would apply it to a WPF application.
(I might have a few details slightly off since I've mainy hacked in Silverlight but the concept is similar enough.)
Basically, the idea is to separate concerns and define interfaces between the different parts of an application, with the goal of keeping the code structured and maintainable.
The Model in your example would be pretty much exactly as you described the wheel rim - a WheelRim class with the various properties defined in suitable data types. I would put the model i an separate assembly to keep it apart from the other code, but you can settle for just keeping the model classes in a "Models" folder. The model would also have a "twin" in a database, the model classes being pretty much one-to-one-mapped to tables.
(You might wanna have a look at Linq2SQL or Entity Framework, if the database is defined you can pretty much get the model for free along with suitable database access code.)
The View would be the actual WPF xaml files - Defining the Grid or Canvas or what have you. On the WheelRimView there would be labels and textboxes for displaying or accessing the different properties, perhaps along with product images and the like. The code behind for the view would have all the relevant event handlers (start, button_click and so on) for getting the data from the fields and passing them to the controllers.
The Controller would be any "handler code" that you would use to manipulate the data. We're talking the basic CRUD operations here, along with validation and the like. Also, the controller layer would be responsible for compiling the data in a format that can go seamlessly into the View. The WheelRimController hence would have methods like "GetWheelRimList", "GetWheelRim", "AddWheelRim", "ModifyWheelRim" and "DeleteWheelRim". The methods take the values as in parameters and manipulate the model objects accordingliy. the
I would recommend keeping the code-behind of the xaml files free from any "controller"-ish code like validation, aggregation and the like - the code behind should basically only take the values from the textboxes, listboxes and such and send them on "as is" to the controller methods for processing. Also, you should keep any data formatting code to a minimum when getting data for presentation (i.e., no filtering or translating in the view).
A typical use case of "User opens a wheel rim and edits the diameter" would play out thus in code:
User clicks "Edit" on a list page. The WheelRimView page loads.
The WheelRimView.Load() method (or corresponding) calls WheelRimController.GetWheelRim(wheelRimId).
WheelRimController.GetWheelRim(wheelRimId) gets the corresonding data from a database table and populates the properties of a WheelRim object, which is returned to the WheelRimView.
The WheelRimView inserts the property values into the labels and textboxes.
The user changes the diameter value and clicks the "Save button.
The WheelRimView.Save() method calls the WheelRimController.ModifyWheelRimDiameter(wheelRimId, diameter) method.
The WheelRimController.ModifyWheelRimDiameter(wheelRimId, diameter) method parses the diameter (if it is a string) and loads the model object. It applies the modified value to the model object and saves it into the database.
The WheelRimController.ModifyWheelRimDiameter(wheelRimId, diameter) returns a status code to the WheelRimView (for instance a predefined numeric stating any validation errors) to report the success of the save.
The WheelRimView displays a result message (hopfully "saved") to the user.
I hope that clears a few bits up.
Bevcause of the rich binding support available, WPF (and Silverlight) are well suited to MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel). MVVM is an extension of MVC that uses a view model to bind the current state of a view, instead of manipulating the view directly.
There are a bunch of MVVM frameworks available, as well as Microsoft's own Prism framework (which is arguably more useful if you have a larger, modular application).
WPF is probably more well suited to MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel). I'd recommend reading this MSDN article on MVVM and, perhaps, following their advice. There's also a nice collection of links I found on the Bryant Likes blog.

In wpf treeview, how to redraw the nodes with their previous expanded values(using MVVM)

I am developing a wpf desktop app with strict MVVM pattern.
Current my app is doing following things:
Showing a Treeview with HierarchicalDataTemplate.
User can expand or collapse Nodes.
User can add add new Nodes(Drag n Drop + double click).
Everytime a new Node is added Model is updated and Treeview is recreated based on Model.
Because Treeview is recreated, all nodes are shown as expanded after adding nodes.
I want to show nodes with their previous expanded condition. Is there any way to do this using MVVM ? What I have thought so far is
Model should not contain any data related to how to draw UI ??
VM should just get data from Model and put it in UI(and pass date from UI to Model) ??
Thanks for your thoughts. I may be way far out form rail. But just want to have some wisdom from you guys.

If you haven't already, read this great article by Josh Smith: Simplifying the WPF TreeView by Using the ViewModel Pattern
Basically what he suggests there is to include a property called IsExpanded in your VM and bind the TreeView to it correctly so that the expanded/collapsed status is entirely controlled by the programmer.
One solution what I think could be is to stop the recreation of the tree, just update the model and only add nodeitems to the current node where you are dropping them. Just refresh the collections in model and dont refresh the tree. Let us know if this does't suits your architect.

The view model can contain view related information, that is what it is for. It is a bridge between pure business and pure view. My view models usually expose a few business properties of an object and add a few related view properties. If all you need is business properties, then bind straight to the business layer. Its only when you need to do something like your situation here that you need a view model.
If you want to completely recreate the tree (which sounds crazy) you can store the expanded state of the nodes in your view model and bind them to the tree view items using an ItemsContainerStyle. that way when you recreate your tree view your previously expanded nodes will still be expanded.
So your wrapped business objects will contain an extra property IsExpanded that you can use to restore your tree view state.
P.s. did i mention its a bit over the top to recreate the tree view?
