Why do I get a NullPointerException in this code? - google-app-engine

public void addEmp(String emp_name, String emp_sal, String did) {
EntityManagerFactory emf = Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory("transactions-optional");
EntityManager em = emf.createEntityManager();
try {
String s = did;
EntityTransaction transaction = em.getTransaction();
transaction.begin();
System.out.println("value of Department_name is::" + s);
Query q = em.createQuery("select from com.wissen.enterprisebysush.server.domainobject.Department d");
Department dept = (Department) q.getResultList().get(0);
System.out.println("Name of Department is::" + dept.getDept_name());
Employee e = new Employee();
e.setEmp_name("Abvc");
e.setEmp_sal("5000");
e.setDepartment(dept);
em.persist(e);
System.out.println("Transaction: " + transaction);
transaction.commit();
em.close();
} catch (NullPointerException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
System.out.println("Exception::" + e.getCause());
} finally {
}
}
I am getting a NullPointerException at transaction.commit();.
So I am unable to add Department object in to Employee

Before commiting the transaction I have printed it still getting an error .

The problem is inside "DataNucleus plugin for Google App Engine" according to the stacktrace. I hunted around a bit, and there seems to be a bug filed about this particular problem here.
It looks like it was fixed and later verified (Aug 14, 2009). So maybe you could try a later release and see if the problem goes away?

When you get an NPE at transaction.commit(), then transaction is null.

CXF2.7.2 + Weblogic 12c + Java 1.7

There is an issue with running CXF application of Weblogic 12c. Exception is as following:
org.apache.jcp.xml.dsig.internal.dom.DOMXMLSignatureFactory cannot be cast to javax.xml.crypto.dsig.XMLSignatureFactory
The interesting here is that DOMXMLSignatureFactory extends XMLSignatureFactory. I've tried to debug and haven't found the cause. XMLSec-1.5.3 code fails on following line:
XMLSignatureFactory fac = (XMLSignatureFactory)ps.newInstance(null);
private static XMLSignatureFactory findInstance(String mechanismType,
Provider provider) {
if (provider == null) {
provider = getProvider("XMLSignatureFactory", mechanismType);
}
Provider.Service ps = provider.getService("XMLSignatureFactory",
mechanismType);
if (ps == null) {
throw new NoSuchMechanismException("Cannot find " + mechanismType +
" mechanism type");
}
try {
XMLSignatureFactory fac = (XMLSignatureFactory)ps.newInstance(null);
fac.mechanismType = mechanismType;
fac.provider = provider;
return fac;
} catch (NoSuchAlgorithmException nsae) {
throw new NoSuchMechanismException("Cannot find " + mechanismType +
" mechanism type", nsae);
}
}
Instantiated class "org.apache.jcp.xml.dsig.internal.dom.DOMXMLSignatureFactory" has declaration:
public final class DOMXMLSignatureFactory extends XMLSignatureFactory {
...
}
Any ideas?

CXF uses WSS4J and wss4j version 1.6.7 has this bug. Can you try upgrading to wss4j 1.6.9? CXF 2.7.3 might pick this up for you. This update fixed the issue for me running in ServiceMix 4.5.0.

It looks like you are using the wrong jar file. You need to set some extra jvm_flags when developing locally.

SQLNonTransientConnectionException: No current connection, in my application while interacting with Derby database

I implemented derby data base in my application to save my data,and I am getting this exception in retrieval of result set form select query in Derby database.
To establish the connection I use connection string as:
I establish connection using this method:
I declare this method in class Connection.java:
public synchronized Connection createConnection() throws Exception {
Connection rescon = null;
try {
if (this.dbuser == null) {
rescon = DriverManager.getConnection(this.URI + ";create=true");
} else {
rescon = DriverManager.getConnection(this.URI + ";create=true",
this.dbuser, this.dbpass);
}
// new connection in connection pool created
} catch (SQLException e) {
final String stackNum = Utility.exceptionHandler(e);
throw new Exception("Exception get during Connection - " + e.getMessage());
}
return rescon;
}
I used this method as and create connection, create connection during intraction using string:
private Connection objConnection = null;
objConnectionpool = new Connection("jdbc:derby:" + Folder.getAbsolutePath() + "/myapplication" + sFileName, null, null, "org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver");
objConnection = objConnectionpool.createNewConnection();
I am getting exception in execution of query:
sQuery = "select value,reason from " + TableNm + " where fileName ='" + FileName + "' AND type='"+Type+"' AND status ='remaining'";
during processing and interaction with Derby database we might update as well get the data from the database:
I perform setAutoCommit as false before inserting in the database
objConnection.setAutoCommit(false);
after insertion:
ps = objConnection.prepareStatement(sQuery);
rs = ps.executeQuery();
objConnection.commit();
objConnection.setAutoCommit(true);
I am getting Exception as
java.sql.SQLNonTransientConnectionException: No current connection.

Found this via Google.
I had the same problem and found my answer in this sample application: http://db.apache.org/derby/docs/10.4/devguide/rdevcsecure26537.html
// force garbage collection to unload the EmbeddedDriver
// so Derby can be restarted
System.gc();
Works perfectly now.

Restlet that works on localhost throws NullPointerException when deployed on GAE

The following simple method works well on my local machine but throws a NullPointerException when I deploy it to App Engine. Calling any method on memberVO such as getId() throws NullPointerException. I cannot understand why this works on my local network but not on appspot.com.
I have tried replacing the serializable object with primitives and strings just for test purposes but none can be passed to GAE. All become null.
I also included the exception from the logs if anyone has any idea.
Thank you in advance for any insight.

This request caused a new process to be started for your application,
and thus caused your application code to be loaded for the first time.
This request may thus take longer and use more CPU than a typical
request for your application.
This is due to a know limitation of GAE with HTTP chunked encoding (not related to Restlet).
However, Restlet does offer a convenient workaround in recent 2.1 snapshot to prevent chunking on the client-side. See details here:
http://wiki.restlet.org/docs_2.1/13-restlet/21-restlet/318-restlet/303-restlet.html
