Visual Studio 2008 doesn't connect to SQL Server 2008 - sql-server

When I try to make a new data connection from a Visual Studio 2008 to a database on SQL Server 2008, it fails. It says, it supports SQL Server connections up to SQL Server 2005 version only.
What is missing in my installation? Or where are settings I should change?

You need to install the Visual Studio 2008 service pack 1.

class not registered sql server management studio

i got this Error while i want Change or create view and change column place
this is photo
how to fix that
Let's Consider the following scenario:
You install SQL Server 2012 Management Studio and create a project in SQL Server 2012 Management Studio.
You install SQL Server 2016 Management Studio on the same computer.
When you try to open the solution (.ssmssln file) or the project (.ssmssqlproj file) using SQL Server Management Studio 2012, you may get the following error:
“Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154
(REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))”
Resolution:
To workaround this issue, use one of the following methods:
Method 1: You can use SQL Server Management Studio 2016 on the same
or different system to work with SQL Server Management Studio 2012
projects after the side by side installation.
Method 2: You can re-install SQL Server Management Studio 2012.
However it is advised that client tools like SQL Server Management Studio 2012 and
SQL Server Management Studio 2016 be installed on separate systems.

Visual studio 2010 with sql server 2008 (default with vs10) and sql 2012. How can I choose from 2008 or 2012 while adding database in server explorer?

I have Visual studio 2010, sql server 2008 R2 and sql server 2012 express installed in my windows 8 pc.
When I create any database project in vs2010 it uses the sql sever 2012 (Using server Explorer window).
I want to change this behavior and want to choose 2008 or 2012 server as per my need.
Is it possible??
I don't have Sql server Management Studio.
After the project is created:
Open the database project's properties.
Go to the Project Settings tab.
Change "Target platform" to SQL Server 2008 or whichever option you need.

"This version is not supported. only servers up to microsoft sql server 2005 are supported"

justI'm getting this error message when trying to add a new connection in VS 2008 Server Explorer.
Unfortunately I'm working in a PC that my client company gave me, and I need to ask permissions to install new software there. This PC has VS 2008 and a pretty old Sql Server version(2000 for what I can see).
I used to think VS doesnt need an additional SQLServer install just to connect, but I guess I was wrong...I want to develop an app that connects to SQL Server 2008, and after testing connection it prompts the error mentioned above.
Is there a way to connect succesfully without installing a newer Sql Server version on my side?
Please, if there is no way to do it, just answer no and let me know, thanks in advance.
As Visual Studio 2008 was released before SQL Server 2008, the development environment database tools were coded without knowing about SQL Server 2008.
However, since these versions of Visual Studio were released before
SQL Server 2008, the design-time tools cannot interact with SQL Server
2008 - even though it is possible to programmatically access the data
in a SQL Server 2008 database from applications written with Visual
Studio 2008 or 2005

Luckily, Microsoft did release a patch for both Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2008, which is also referenced in the article (to save you reading the whole thing, for Visual Studio 2008, you need to install Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1)

Missing Sql Server Compact? Not in Sql Server 2012?

I have Sql Server 2012 SP1 but I can't find how to create a sql compact server. It is not under connections like it was in sql server 2008.
Did they move it or do I have to install something else? According to web platform installer I have sql compact server 4.0 installed on my machine.
SQL Server 2012 doesn't come with Compact Edition.
I believe it comes with Visual Studio 2012 SP1, and it would be visible trough it.

SQL Server 2005 Express installed after SQL Server 2008 Express

I already had the SQL Server 2008 Express engine installed (just the bit that comes with VS 2008 Express). I then installed SQL Server 2005 Express followed by SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express, all of which seemed to install OK without any errors. However, when I run SQL Server 2005 Management Studio and enter the Server name as machine name\SQLEXPRESS and click Connect I get the message:
"This version of SQL Management Studio Express can only be used to connect to SQL Server 2000 and 2005 servers".
Presumably the instance name SQLEXPRESS refers to the 2008 version, is the 2005 instance a different name, or is it a different problem? Any ideas please, thanks
You are right that the SQL 2008 Express took the 'SQLEXPRESS' instance name. The 2005 toolset cannot connect to 2008. You need to find out the isntance name under which the 2005 VS installed it's Express. Easiest way is to start the Service Manager (run services.msc)and see the instance name there.
Run "services.msc" and check the service name that is running your SQLServer 2005 Express instance. You should use it, and not "SQLEXPRESS" if it is running your SQLServer 2008 instance.
Btw, SSMS 2008 works beautifully with 2005 instances.
Check this link to download SSMS Express 2008. I'm not sure code completion will work with SQLServer 2005 tho.
