Elegantly override style of ComboBox's ToggleButton in WPF - wpf

I have a question regarding how to elegantly override an arbitrary element deep inside a control's visual tree. I also have attempted to resolve it in a few different ways, but I've run into several problems with each. Usually when I try three different paths and fail at each one I go downstairs, have a coffee, and ask someone smarter than myself. So here I am.
Specifics:
I want to flatten the style of a combo box so that it will not draw attention to itself. I want it to be similar to Windows.Forms.ComboBox's FlatStyle I want it to look the same on Windows 7 and XP.
Mainly, I want to change the look of a ComboBox's ToggleButton.
I could just use Blend and rip the control template's guts out and manually change them. That doesn't sound very appetizing to me.
I tried using a style to override the ToggleButton's background, but it turns out that the whole ComboBox control is actually a front for a ToggleButton.
<Window
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
x:Class="ComboBoxExpiriment2.MainWindow"
x:Name="Window"
xmlns:Microsoft_Windows_Themes="clr-namespace:Microsoft.Windows.Themes;assembly=PresentationFramework.Classic" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006"
Title="MainWindow"
Width="204" Height="103">
<Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot">
<ComboBox HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="32,26.723,0,0" Width="120" VerticalAlignment="Top" Height="21.277">
<ComboBox.Style>
<Style>
<Setter Property="ToggleButton.Background" Value="Green" />
</Style>
</ComboBox.Style>
</ComboBox>
</Grid>
So I gave up and ripped it using Blend. I found that it's actually a Style called ComboBoxTransparentButtonStyle with a target type of ToggleButton. The style sets a ControlTemplate that uses a DockPanel that has a "Microsoft_Windows_Themes:ClassicBorderDecorator" type set to the right, and that's what we're actually trying to control. (Are you with me so far?)
Here's the pic:
<Style x:Key="ComboBoxTransparentButtonStyle" TargetType="{x:Type ToggleButton}">
<Setter Property="MinWidth" Value="0"/>
<Setter Property="MinHeight" Value="0"/>
<Setter Property="Width" Value="Auto"/>
<Setter Property="Height" Value="Auto"/>
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="{x:Static Microsoft_Windows_Themes:ClassicBorderDecorator.ClassicBorderBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="2"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ToggleButton}">
<DockPanel SnapsToDevicePixels="true" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" LastChildFill="false">
<Microsoft_Windows_Themes:ClassicBorderDecorator x:Name="Border" Width="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemParameters.VerticalScrollBarWidthKey}}" DockPanel.Dock="Right" Background="Green" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderStyle="None" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}">
<Path Fill="{TemplateBinding Foreground}" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Data="{StaticResource DownArrowGeometry}"/>
</Microsoft_Windows_Themes:ClassicBorderDecorator>
</DockPanel>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsChecked" Value="true">
<Setter Property="BorderStyle" TargetName="Border" Value="AltPressed"/>
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
<Style.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="false">
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlDarkBrushKey}}"/>
</Trigger>
</Style.Triggers>
</Style>
Arg. Isn't WPF a blast?
So I extracted the style ComboBoxTransparentButtonStyle and dropped it into another project's application.resources. Problem is I can't apply that style to a ComboBox because the style I extracted has a targetType of ToggleButton, so the TargeTypes don't match.
tl;dr how would you guys do it?

There isn't an elegant solution for this. The best you can do is override the style for the entire ComboBox so that you can change the style it sets for the ToggleButton.
You can use Blend to get the styles, however that probabliy isn't the easiest way. If you have Blend installed, go to "[Program files or where Blend is installed]\SystemThemes\WPF\areo.normalcolor.xaml".

A Working Solution
Hi, this style satisfies your needs, feel free to edit it as you need:

Note the DataTrigger part inside the toggle button style, it hooks to its templated parent's IsKeyboardFocusWithin property istead of IsFocused property, because the last one won't work if you set the ComboBox.IsEditable to True as I did in this style.

Binding In WPF Style Not Working

WPF 4.5
Can someone please take the below default style for ComboBox and show me how to change it so that I can set a BorderBrush color (or resource brush) via Style setter at the top "ComboBox" level...and then have that same color to flow all the way down to the BorderBrush property of the Border named "Border" within the ToggleButton template with key "ComboBoxToggleButton"?
THANKS!!!

WPF especific style on selected item according to the style of the item

I have a custom combobox where I apply a specific style on the first item. I want that when this item is selected, the style of displayed text in the combobox is the same. Currently, all selected items appear in the same style and I do not know how to make the ContentPresenter "get" the specified style in that item. This is the code:
<ComboBox HorizontalAlignment="Center" Margin="0,106,0,0" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="200">
<ComboBoxItem Style="{StaticResource mySpecialStyle}">Select an option...</ComboBoxItem>
<ComboBoxItem>ComboBox Item #1</ComboBoxItem>
<ComboBoxItem>ComboBox Item #2</ComboBoxItem>
<ComboBoxItem>ComboBox Item #3</ComboBoxItem>
</ComboBox>
In fact, "mySpecialStyle" only changes color and fontstyle. But when the first item is selected, it appears like any other selected item. How can set this on the Contentpresenter?
Here is the complete code of the custom ComBoBox:
<Window.Resources>

The placeholder "???" is where I need to set the style according to the style defined in the ComboBoxitem (in this case, "mySpecialStyle").
Thanks in advance!
The logic to solve here of course will base on something like a Trigger. However we can't set Style via Setter. So I thought of this hack (but safe enough). Firstly you need to bind the Style of the ContentPresenter to its Tag property (of course 2 way binding by default). Then you just need to change the Tag to a {StaticResource} with ResourceKey being the same as the resource you defined upwards on the tree. This resource should of course have TargetType of ContentPresenter:
<ContentPresenter
Name="ContentSite"
IsHitTestVisible="False"
Content="{TemplateBinding SelectionBoxItem}"
ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding SelectionBoxItemTemplate}"
ContentTemplateSelector="{TemplateBinding ItemTemplateSelector}"
Style="{Binding Tag, RelativeSource={RelativeSource Self}}" />
<!-- the additional Trigger should be added to the ControlTemplate.Triggers -->
<Trigger Property="SelectedIndex" Value="0">
<Setter TargetName="ContentSite"
Property="Tag" Value="{StaticResource mySpecialStyle}"/>
</Trigger>

WPF Combobox - Flatten, Remove Inner Border, No Aero

When I first set out, I thought it would be simple: style a combobox in WPF to have a different color background/foreground/border, a new font, and basic square edges. Turns out it's a lot more complicated than I had anticipated!
After failing to set my desired look through basic Style="FancyShmancyCombobox" or inline styling, I found out the combobox is actually a three-part beast that has to be styled through a ControlTemplate (thank you, StackOverflow.) So, I opened up Blend, messed around with the styling there, and came a little closer, except there was an undesirable white border around the inside of my control that I could not get rid of no matter what I did; also, the new style relied on an Aero Windows theme which previously had not been included in my project.
Research showed that the white border was not easy to get rid of and that the added theme might cause problems for me down the road as this program has to support computers ranging from Win8 all the way back to XP. The only suggestion I could find for removing the white border was not to use the various Chrome controls that Blend had inserted, including a ChromeButton, ListBoxChrome, and a dropshader.
Everyone who sees the code below is probably going to cringe, but my workaround for these problems was ultimately to gut the controltemplate and replace all of the 'chrome' references and anything else that relied on the Aero theme with something that didn't, so ChromeButton became ToggleButton, ListBoxChrome became ListBox, and the dropshaders were dropped altogether. My control is finally getting closer to the look I wanted, with one little problem...
Now the dropdown won't open. :(
I fear in my zeal to destroy the evil white border, I have remove the actual functionality of the combobox. Can anyone suggest a way to re-establish this functionality while keeping a flat appearance, preferably without using Aero? An alternative to the combobox control altogether that could be tweaked to offer identical functionality would also be appreciated.

Change color of combobox(title box of combo box in which arrow button is displayed)

I want to change the color permanently of the box(title box of combo box in which arrow button is displayed) in combobox in which title of the combobox is displayed,how to do this tried lot many things but it is not that what i want
It is quite simple. You just have to add resources and consume resources.
try this :
<Window.Resources>
<Style x:Key="stylecombo" TargetType="ComboBox">
<Setter Property="ComboBox.Background"
Value="Beige" />
</Style>
</Window.Resources>
<ComboBox Style="{StaticResource stylecombo}" Height="25" Width="100" Margin="23,22,285,262" IsEditable="True" Text="Your Choice...">
<ComboBoxItem Content="1"></ComboBoxItem>
<ComboBoxItem Content="2"></ComboBoxItem>
</ComboBox>
If you are using usercontrol, use UserControl.Resources instead of Window.Resources.
Hope this will help you.!! :)
This is a matter of either Retemplating the combobox control, or Get the TemplatedChild elements of the control..
The first one is the one i use myself the most, so that I have something consistent throughout my application.

The template of combo box says that its background is transparent, just add a panel/grid behind it and change the color of panel/grid to desired color, it will change to that color.
You will have to create a grid, set its background color, bring it over the combo box control, set its height and width to match with combo box, and right click the combo box, go to order, select bring to front.
This will do the trick.
Works with me :)

You should go to the msdn site and get the default control template for the combobox. After that you use it in your project and change it depending on your needs. Here: ComboBox ControlTemplate Example
Either that or use Expression Blend
