Limited memory usage of sql server 2008 express? - sql-server

I want to install sql server 2008 express on my laptop that has 1 GB memory, but my database contains lots of binary data that I don't want spending all my RAM. I would much rather sacrifice sql performance (make it page) in favor of other applications.
Is it possible to limit the memory footprint of sql server?

I've only got SQL Server 2005 Express, not 2008, but from SQL Server Management Studio Express, if I right-click on the root node in the tree (the server node) and select Properties, there's a "Memory" page with both minimum and maximum amounts of memory available to be set.
From the docs for these options:
Minimum server memory (in MB)
Specifies that SQL Server should start
with at least the minimum amount of
allocated memory and not release
memory below this value. Set this
value based on the size and activity
of your instance of SQL Server. Always
set the option to a reasonable value
to ensure that the operating system
does not request too much memory from

I'd be surprised if these options weren't in 2008, but you could always just install it and try.

You might also try giving cpu priority to your favored applications and letting SQL manage memory dynamically. It will release memory as needed by other apps, regardless of priority.
Hopefully you're not trying to run visual studio on that machine. It won't be much fun.

SSIS Server Maintenance Job ends up using all of server memory

For some reason the SSIS Server Maintenance Job ends up having the SQL Server instance use all available server memory after a few runs (it runs every midnight). When that happens, my SSIS packages no longer have memory to run in and start swapping on disk which leads to unacceptable execution times or at worst a total hang.
So far I've been resetting the SQL Server service through Configuration Manager every morning, but that's not a viable long term solution. I have not set maximum memory limit for the SQL Server instance. Would that help? If not, what can I do?
Server information: Azure VM, 32 GB ram, no other purpose for the server than running SSIS.
You should always set a maximum memory limit for SQL Server instances.
A simple rule of thumb is to leave 4GB or 10% of total memory free, whichever is larger, and tweak as necessary.
If your SQL Server instance is running as a VM, then you also need to set a memory reservation at the host for your VM. Otherwise, the host's 'balloon memory manager' might kick in and steal memory back from your instance.

Does upgrading RAM automatically increases the allocation to SQL Server or it has to be manually configured via SP_CONFIGURE?
Can we know what was originally allocated to SQL Server before configuring manually through SP_CONFIGURE? I could've found if I gathered the values from SELECT object_name, cntr_value FROM SYS.DM_OS_PERFORMANCE_COUNTERS WHERE counter_name IN ('Total Server Memory (KB)','Target Server Memory (KB)') but I didn't.
So, is there any way to find the historical config?

You can't get the historical configuration values from any standard tables (apart from something pretty esoteric).
Whether or not SQL Server will automatically use all available memory just depends upon the max memory configuration. It's designed to use whatever memory is available, up to the configured maximum, apart from leaving some memory for the operating system.
If the operating system flags that it's running low on memory, SQL Server will release memory from its process when necessary. Usually it's pretty graceful, but the OS can also urgently require memory, and SQL Server will respond to that too. It starts dumping pages rapidly, and you'll usually see that in the SQL Server error log.

Large script failing on SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

I need to run a "large" script on SQL Server 2008 R2 Express and it is failing with
There is insufficient system memory in resource pool 'internal' to run this query.
The script is around 10MB saved to disk, contains about 54000 top-level statements (insert/delete/update) and declares about 5000 variables (of type BIGINT).
I am running SQL Server 2008 R2 Express 64bit 10.5.1746. There is 3GB allocated to the VM, 1GB allocated to SQL Server, 512kb minimum memory per query. The results of DBCC MEMORYSTATUS can be found on this link.
The script is merely a restoration of a (lightweight) production database which was exported as SQL statements (data only, no schema).
If it's not possible to do this, I am shocked that SQL Server cannot handle such a basic scenario. I've tested this equivalent scenario on Firebird and Sqlite and it's worked just fine! (and they are open-source products).
NOTE: it is not possible to break the script up as variables declared in the beginning are referenced in the end of the script.

SQL Server Express is limited in the amount of memory it can use. Of that memory only a portion can be used for executing queries. You can try setting forced parameterization on the database as it may reduce the memory required for the plan which would leave more for query execution (depends on your specific queries).
The best option is to use an edition of SQL Server that supports more memory. Developer edition is affordable but can't be used for production use. Standard edition would be your next best bet.
The only thing that's worked thus far is upgrading to SQL Server 2012 Express. Query took several minutes to execute, but did so completely and without error.

SQL Server DB Engine Memory Leakage

We have a Windows Form Application and the back-end of the application is SQL Server Express 2005/2008. Our application can be installed on Windows XP SP3/ Windows Vista/ Windows 7.
We have observed huge memory leakage in SQL Server Express.
Normally, there are two process running even if the application is not used by the user:
A polling process to check the availability of files. (If files are not available then, only one query is fired to check some configuration setting)
A Scheduling process. (This process fires a query every minute to check for any scheduled task)
We have observed that the memory usage of the SQL Server (sqlsrvr.exe) keeps on increasing. In around an hour, the memory usage reaches upto 1GB and it never comes down.
We have also noticed that, if the interval of the polling process is increased, then the memory usage increases gradually but, it does increase.
The higher memory usage by SQL server downgrades the machine performance and the performance of all other applications running on the machine.
Please provide suggestions to control the memory usage of SQL server in this case.

SQL Server is designed to take all the memory on the system and use it for its internal cache. You should never run anything else on the same machine as SQL Server. This is not a leak, is the intended and desired behavior. By design. See Memory Manager Architecture
As a special case SQL Server Express edition limits its internal buffer pool size to 1Gb. The buffer pool is not the only memory consumed by SQL Server though. You can further limit the SQL Server buffer pool size by specifying a value for max server memory.

SQL Server 2k5 memory consumption?

I have a development vm which is running sql server as well as some other apps for my stack, and I found that the other apps are performing awfully. After doing some digging, SQL Server was hogging the memory. After a quick web search I discovered that by default, it will consume as much memory as it can in order to cache data and give it back to the system as other apps request it, but this process often doesn't happen fast enough, apparently my situation is a common problem.
There however is a way to limit the memory SQL Server is allowed to have. My question is, how should I set this limit. Obviously I'm going to need to do some guess and check, but is there an absolute minimum threshhold? Any recommendations are appreciated.

I'll note that out developer machines have 2 gigs of memory so I'd like to be able to run the vm on 768 mb or less if possible. This vm will be only used for local dev and testing , so the load will be very minimal. After code has been tested locally it goes to another environment where the SQL server box is dedicated. What I'm really looking for here is recommendations on minimums

The recommendation on minimum is: No such thing. The more memory the better. The SQL Sever needs as much memory as it can get or it will trash your IO.
Stop the SQL Server. Run your other applications and take note to the amount of memory they need. Subtract that from your total available RAM, and use that number for the MAX memory setting in the SQL Server.
Since this is a development environment, I agree with Greg, just use trial and error. It's not that crucial to get it perfectly right.
But if you do a lot of work in the VM, why not give it at least half of the 2GB?

That will depend on your data and the size of your database. But I usually like to give SQL server at least a GB
It really depends on what else is going on on the machine. Get things running under a typical load and have a look at Task Manager to see what you need for everything else. Try that number to start with.
For production machines, of course, it is best to give control of the machine to Sql Server (Processors -> Boost Sql Server Priority) and let it have all the RAM it wants.
Since you are using VMs, maybe you could create a dedicated one just for Sql Server and run everything else on a different VM.
