adjust drop shadow size in WPF. shown in the image - wpf

I try to resize the drop shadow effect in WPF. But I did not find any answer.

You cannot set margin to your shadow, so you could "hide" another simple
Border behind your "real" Border.
Wrap them in a Grid that will hold both of them in the same place.
Set your margin on that Border, and set the shadow effect on it as well.

Just add the Background property to the Border in the o_w's example to show the shadow, or use other controls as example, such as button.

How to avoid sizing grip overlap in Window

I made a WPF Window containing StatusBar with StatusBarItem and ProgressBar.
The Window has a property ResizeMode set to CanResizeWithGrip.
It shows the sizing grip properly, but it overlaps elements underneath:
How can I avoid this overlap? I can set right margin to the progress bar, but how large? I don't want to use any magic numbers or hardcoded values. It would be also nice to have this resolved purely in XAML.

Setting the background color of a FlowDocument in a FlowDocumentReader

I have been using a RichTextBox to show FlowDocuments in a WPF app, but I found that there is something called FlowDocumentReaderwhich gives me alot of functionality for free. The problem is that while the background in the RichTextBox was shown as white, it is now completely transparent.
I have tried setting the Backgroundproperty, but that only changes the toolbar at the bottom.

Why ZIndex is not considered in arrange override of a stackpanel

Here is what I tried to to:
Added a stackpanel to my window (Orientation: Horizontal)
Added a set of buttons to it
Set the first button's ZIndex to be higher than the second one
Increased the width of the first button
What I expected:
I expected the first button to be on top of the second button (atlest overlay)
StackPanel's width should not change unless the width of the first button is no more sufficient
What is happening actually:
First button's width increases and the second button moves towards the right accordingly. They stay on the same plane
StackPanel's width increases with increase in the first button's width
Here is my question:
I know that stackpanel has not considered ZIndex while arranging the items within itself, BUT WHY?? Shouldn't it consider the ZIndex of its children while arranging them???
The Stackpanel 'stacks' its children based on their widths, i.e. if you increase the width of an item (or increase its margin), the stackpanel will simply expand to accomodate this. If you want to force items within a stackpanel to overlap, you will have to change their location after the layout has been computed. You can perform this using a RenderTransform. See the example below:

And yes, the ZIndex is respected. This is an attached proepry of Canvas, however, it seems to be used by the rendering engine directly rather than by Canvas, hence it works in the above code.
I tried to find some relevant info about how to set the z index of wpf layout elements and panels. Using a Canvas comes with a different set of positioning issues which I simply hadn't the time to investigate. Here is a simple solution using the Panel.ZIndex property in xaml.

The resulting two square border elements will overlap. One can use stackpanels instead of borders and use this logic to overlap anything easily.

WPF Image Button formatting

If I create a button with an image inside, it gets blown up to much larger size than the image.
If i try to constrain the size of image, and container button, the image gets cut off:

Native image size is 16x16. Here the button is 18x18 with 0 padding, yet the image still gets cut-off on right/bottom.

The beauty (and curse?) of WPF is the ability to re-template controls.
You can set the template of the button something like the following (this is free hand, so you will need to tweak it a bit for your tastes):

You should remove any Width and Height settings and set the Button's HorizontalAlignment and VerticalAlignment both to Center (or Left/Right or Top/Bottom resp.). By default, these properties are set to Stretch which makes the button stretch to the available space. Since the image is the content of the button, it also gets stretched. Something like this should work:

The following was just meant as an alternative with a different result which obviously (considering your comments) is not what you want.
If you want the button to stretch, but not the image, you could also set the Image's alignment properties to something other than Stretch. Or you could set its Stretch property to None. This would make the button as large as possible, but keep the image at its original size (16x16). This would work as follows:

Get rid of button border in WPF?

i am trying to get rid of button border and only display text, however a thin line around the text gets displayed even though i set borderThickness to 0 and borderbrush to transparent.

The method that I recently found to be most useful for this was to have your button use the style of a toolbars. This will only use the image or text while only showing button borders on mouse over.

You need to create a new Template for your buttons.
The easiest way to do this is open your project in Expression Blend, select the button and then right click and select "Edit Template > Edit a Copy..". This copies the existing template into one you can modify. It's easier if you create it in a resource dictionary.
Then select the template and on the Resource tab (on the right of the UI) select the ButtonFocusVisual. Select the Properties tab and expand the Miscellaneous section. This has BorderStyle and BorderThickness fields (among others). Set the style to None.
Templates will not solve this problem, your only course of action is to modify the WPF control. The solution is here:
