SSIS - SQL Update Query without output: Error - sql-server

I'm trying to run an update query in the middle of the SSIS package and doing it via SQL rather than using all of the built in logic gates is preferred to avoid the headache. The issue I'm running into is that if I return no results, it gives me an error:
Error 1 Validation error. No column information was returned by the SQL command.
Locally I originally had:
SELECT 1 [placeholder]
at the end of my query to trick it into executing, but when I imported this package to SQL Server as a job to automate, it skipped this update because SELECT 1 [placeholder] is never used so it views it was "unnecessary code":
Error: Update has been removed from the Data Flow task because its output is not used and its inputs either have no side effects or are not connected to outputs of other components. If the component is required, then the HasSideEffects property on at least one of its inputs should be set to true, or its output should be connected to something.
So I turned to my SSIS package and went to set HasSideEffects = True, but it's greyed out and won't let me change it, so now I'm unsure what to do. How can I resolve this without using the built in logic gates? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks to Brad's help, realized I need to use "Execute SQL Task" not "Data Flow Task".

SQL Command from Variable for MDX OLEDB source SSIS

I'm having some issues with an MDX query source in an SSIS data flow.
If I configure an OLEDB source properly, and have the data access mode as SQL Command, the MDX query works.
I need this source to be parameterized though, so I'm trying to pass in a variable that is populated at runtime as the MDX source query.
The problem is, when I set this up, it will try to use the variable (which is not correct until runtime) and throw this error.
What is the trick to getting an MDX Source to work from a variable?
I built all of the downstream transformations after first configuring the source with a hardcoded query (SQL Command). Then I went back to change the source to use the variable and it broke.
Thanks for any input.

You want to a parameterized query and would like to build a String variable with the query. Anyway, your package needs to be validated before run. So, here you have two options:
If your query variable is populated at runtime and it has no Expressions, you might specify this variable value with a valid MDX query. The package and your DataFlow task will be validated before run (regular process)with this default query and pass, and at runtime - use correct MDX query.
You can set DelayValidation property of your DataFlow task to true. Then it will be validated immediately before running, when your variable will contain valid MDX query.
I would prefer the second method as more generic.
Set Delay Validation = True. Delay validation is a property available for all SSIS components and it basicly holds the validation back till excution. Mostly when we set connections or other components with variables it helps. As the variables dont have the true property at run time.

SSIS Package Error single UPDATE in a execute SQL task

I am trouble shooting an error in a package.
Update MYTABLE for MYCOLUMN (REF to task name):Error: Executing the query "..." failed with the following error: "Invalid column name 'MYCOLUMN'.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
I have verified the table and column exists, the length of the field is way excessive than what it needs that is 14 where it is declared as varchar(250).
I have verified the script works on the server in SSMS outside of the context of the package.
I have verified the connection and database in the package is as I expect.
Is there away to verify on the server. I did try to look at the Connection Managers tab on the package configuration itself i.e. in the Integration Services Catalogs->SSISDB->solutionfolder->..->package.dtsx->Configure context menu but it is empty.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?
Just to add more context the package contains 27 other tasks, 9 tasks in a row linked to this task but all set to on completion, all seem to be doing stuff independent of the other. 1 task is a loop doing stuff and the rest are single independent tasks. So I don't know at this stage if it is a cascading connection issue perhaps however; I am just reading what the log says.
I kicked off the package at 9:54am, the timestamp on the error log says 11:45am so nearly 2 hours into running is this log reported.
I would suggest the below things to troubleshoot the issue.
I would suggest you to just have this task and disable all other
tasks to troubleshoot the issue. So that you can focus on this issue
specifically. That will tell you whether connection is working fine
without issues.
I would suggest you to edit the task and see whether parameters are
set properly. Different providers have different way of setting
parameters. Again check whether parameters are proper. Execute SQL
Task
one more thing, may be you are pointing the package to different
connection than the one you used for SSMS. So, it is working in SSMS
and in the connection being used in the package is not having schema
changes yet done.
I finally figure it out before I read the previous offered suggestion so will give some credit if I can! FYI: We have a lot of dev servers. I clicked on the overview hyperlink in the All Execution logs and it said another server. Also I found the connection on the job calling the package not the package itself so I have learnt something today. Anyhow the job said one server but the overview said another so I again I was back to square one scratching my head.
Then I decided to open the connection manager on the job and select the field and make no change rather then cancelling I clicked ok not thinking about it and noticed the field changed to bold face. So I am assuming if you make a manual change on the server in SSMS to anything it shows up in bold which is kind of useful. So I can only assume this is a MS SSMS or SSIS or VS deployment bug. That it does not overwrite, the previous connection although the SSMS interface says otherwise. Perhaps somebody can share some light. Having not checked the server before I made a change and deployed it I have no idea if the previous settings were changed manually by someone or the connection in the package was changed and deployed. Anyhow checking the job history shows it had been failing for awhile so it wasn't me so whoever and whenever a change was done by a previous developer didn't figure it our either or didn't bother or did not know how, or didn't observe it. Anyhow it is pointing to the correct server now!!!

SSIS package canceled for no obvious reason

When I run my SSIS package in Visual Studio it executes just fine. However when I try to execute this same package using the SQL server agent, by either CmdExec or SSIS package type, it gets canceled. The package is stored on the IS catalog. All on the same server.
The standard report tells me task x failed, but is not showing any error messages. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the task itself as after an DB restore and rerun of the same package with the same data, a different task fails.
I have tried this several times and it always fails because of 1 (out of possible 3) task which are more or less close to each other in the control flow. Moreover the task that fails is only calling a stored procedure, which is completely encapsulated with try-catch.
The standard report is however throwing the following message at the time the package failed:
< ?xml version"1.0"?> < DTS:ProcessMemoryUsage xmlns: DTS=www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/DTS">
< DTS:Peakworkingsetsize>320692224< /DTS.................
which makes me think it has something to do with memory. However can't find anything usefull on google about this message.
I already trying things for a week now but not able to find the solution. Please help?
It might something going on in your tasks. I have noticed the same behavior while running SSAS cube. If it fails, gives not specific error. Try to disable all tasks and enable them one by one in order to find which contains the problem.

Exception handling in SSIS Package Dynamic Connection

SSIS Scenario
I have a SQL variable of type object. It contains all the connection to different servers/databases. I want to connect to those databases one by one and run a query.
Expected Exception Handling
If the SSIS Connection manager(Dynamic connection manger) is unable to find the connection to the server (probably the server is down) I want to Skip that connection (Database/server) and log that into the table and move onto the next Connection (Database/Server). The SSIS package should not crash.
My Implementation
I have Successfully Configured the SSIS package to Use Connection Manager (Dynamic Connection Manager) and Foreach loop to loop through the SSIS variable of type object. but I am not able to skip the Connection if the server/database is not found. it generates error that the server/databsse not found / problem with the connection and the SSIS package fails.
my experience in SSIS is one week old
Any help will be appreciated.
How about setting --> Force execution Result property of the task to success
I was looking for the same fix too. Seems the normal OnError Eventhandling does not work for issues that arise when connecting to a source DB.
There is another workaround I wanted to mention. You can handle the error in the Data Flow Task (OnError Eventhandler, set the System-Variable "Propagate" in that Eventhandler to false). I think this is still required, but not sure. I use it also to log the exception.
Afterwards you can set MaximumErrorCount in ForEachLoop to "0" (which means unlimited). I'm not exactly sure why it works, but trying to find a way to handle the scenario you described, I found this.
==
Just as an interesting observation: For debugging purposes I added an OnError Eventhandler to the ForEachLoop and set a breakpoint there in a dummy script. It was never reached. Nonetheless the ForEachLoop failed all the time until I set MaximumErrorCount to 0.
I dont think its possible to continue the package execution once it encounters an error. You need to control this behavior through a SQL Server table (or any other table for that matter).
Once the package fails, you can set a flag in the table saying that the package failed. The next time the package runs, you can start from this point on and continue the execution. But automatically skipping the down server is kinda pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
Another way you can do this is to ping each server before hand in a separate package and store the ping results in a table. Only pick those records (servers) whose ping results were positive. Otherwise just skip the server.

SSRS Query execution failed for dataset

Have just deployed my Project on to my reporting Server.
I have multiple datasets which are referencing views which exist on the db on that server.
When I try to go into any report part I am getting this message:
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
Query execution failed for dataset 'dataset1'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand)
For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors
Can anyone help?
I enabled remote errors to pinpoint the problem.
I identified that a column in a particular dataset (one of my views) was throwing an error.
So using a tool "SQL Delta", I compared the development version of the database with the live version on the reporting server. I noticed that one of the views had an extra column on the development server, that was not on the live version of the db.
SQL Delta generated the script I needed to run to update the view on my live db.
I ran this script, re-ran the report, everything worked.
I encountered a similar error message. I was able to fix it without enabling remote errors.
In Report Builder 3.0, when I used the Run button to run the report, an error alert appeared, saying
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
[OK] [Details...]
Pressing the details button gave me a text box where I saw this text:
For more information about this error navigate to the report server
on the local server machine, or enable remote errors
----------------------------
Query execution failed for dataset 'DataSet1'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand)
I was confused and frustrated, because my report did not have a dataset named 'DataSet1'. I even opened the .rdl file in a text editor to be sure. After a while, I noticed that there was more text in the text box below what I could read. The full error message was:
For more information about this error navigate to the report server
on the local server machine, or enable remote errors
----------------------------
Query execution failed for dataset 'DataSet1'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand)
----------------------------
The execution failed for the shared data set 'CustomerDetailsDataSet'.
(rsDataSetExecutionError)
----------------------------
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
I did have a shared dataset named 'CustomerDetailsDataSet'. I opened the query (which was a full SQL query entered in text mode) in SQL Server Management Studio, and ran it there. I got error messages which clearly pointed to a certain table, where a column I had been using had been renamed and changed.
From that point, it was straightforward to modify my query so that it worked with the new column, then paste that modification into the shared dataset 'CustomerDetailsDataSet', and then nudge the report in Report Builder to recognise the change to the shared dataset.
After this fix, my reports no longer triggered this error.
Like many others here, I had the same error. In my case it was because the execute permission was denied on a stored procedure it used. It was resolved when the user associated with the data source was given that permission.
I experienced the same issue, it was related to security not being granted to part of the tables. review your user has access to the databases/ tables/views/functions etc used by the report.
The solution for me came from GShenanigan:
You'll need to check out your log files on the SSRS server for more detail. They'll be somewhere like: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10_50.DEV\Reporting Services\LogFiles\"
I was able to find a permissions problem on a database table referenced by the view that was not the same one as the where the view was. I had been focused on permissions on the view's database so this helped pinpoint where the error was.
I just dealt with this same issue. Make sure your query lists the full source name, using no shortcuts. Visual Studio can recognize the shortcuts, but your reporting services application may not be able to recognize which tables your data should be coming from. Hope that helps.
I had the similar issue showing the error
For more information about this error navigate to the report server on
the local server machine, or enable remote errors Query execution
failed for dataset 'PrintInvoice'.
Solution:
1) The error may be with the dataset in some cases, you can always check if the dataset is populating the exact data you are expecting by going to the dataset properties and choosing 'Query Designer' and try 'Run', If you can successfully able to pull the fields you are expecting, then you can be sure that there isn't any problem with the dataset, which takes us to next solution.
2) Even though the error message says "Query Failed Execution for the dataset", another probable chances are with the datasource connection, make sure you have connected to the correct datasource that has the tables you need and you have permissions to access that datasource.
In my situation, I created a new SSRS report and new stored procedure for the dataset. I forgot to add the stored procedure to the database role that had permission to execute it. Once I added the permissions to SQL database role with EXECUTE, all was fine!
The error message encountered by the user was "An error occurred during client rendering. An error has occurred during report processing (rsProcessingAborted). Query execution failed for dataset "DataSet1'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand) For more information..."
Very grateful I found this great post. As for my case, the user executing the stored procedure did not have EXECUTE permissions. The solution was to grant EXECUTE permissions for the user within the stored procedure by adding below code to the end of the stored procedure.
GRANT EXECUTE ON dbo.StoredProcNameHere TO UsernameRunningreports
GO
I also had a very similar issue with a very similar error message. My issue was that the database could not be connected to. In our case, we have mirrored databases and the connection string did not specify the Failover Partner. So when the database couldn't connect, it never went to the mirror and was throwing this error. Once I specified the Failover Partner in the connection string for my datasource, it resolved the issue.
BIGHAP: A SIMPLE WORK AROUND FOR THIS ISSUE.
I ran into the same problem when working with SharePoint lists as the DataSource, and read the blogs above which were very helpful. I had made changes in both the DataSource and Data object names and query fields in Visual Studio and the query worked in visual Studio. I was able to deploy the report to SharePoint but when I tried to open it I received the same error.
I guessed that the issue was that I needed to redeploy both the DataSource and the DataSet to SharePoint so that that changes in the rendering tools were all synced.
I redeployed the DataSource, DataSet and the Report to sharePoint and it worked.
As one of the blogs stated, although visual studio allowed the changes I made in the dataset and datasource, if you have not set visual studio to automatically redeploy datasource and dataset when you deploy the report(which can be dangerous, because this can affect other reports which share these objects) this error can occur.
So, of course the fix is that in this case you have to redeploy datasource, dataset and Report to resolve the issue.
I was also facing the same issue - I checked below things to fix this issue,
If you have recently changed pointing database-name in data-source
then first check that all the store procedures for that report exist
on changed database.
If there are multiple sub reports on main report then make sure each
report individually running perfectly.
Also check security panel - user must have access to the databases/
tables/views/functions for that report.
Sometimes, we also need to check dataset1 - store procedure. As if you are trying to show the report with user1 and if this user doesn't have the access(rights) of provided (dataset1 database) database then it will throw the same error as above so must check the user have access of dbreader in SQL Server.
Also, if that store procedure contains some other database (Database2) like
Select * from XYZ inner join Database2..Table1 on ... where...
Then user must have the access of this database too.
Note: you can check log files on this path for more details,
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.SQLEXPRESS\Reporting Services
I got same error but this worked and solved my problem
If report is connected to Analysis server then give required permission to the user (who is accessing reporting server to view the the reports) in your model of analysis server.
To do this add user in roles of model or cube and deploy the model to your analysis server.
Using SSRS, Report Builder 3.0, MSSQL 2008 and query to an Oracle 11G database,
I found that the oracle stored procedure ran well, produced consistent results with no errors. When I tried bringing the data into SSRS, I got the error as listed in OP's query. I found that the data loaded and displayed only if I removed the parameters (not a good idea).
On Further examination, I found that under dataset properties>parameters I had set the start date to parameterName P_Start and parameter Value to #P_Start.
Adding the Parameter value as [#P_Start] cleared the problem, and the data loads well, with parameters in place.
This problem was caused by an orphaned SQL Login. I ran my favorite sp_fixusers script and the error was resolved. The suggestion above to look at the logs was a good one...and it led me to my answer.
This might be the permission issue for your view or store procedure
In addition to the above answers, it could be due to a missing SQL stored-procedure or SQL function. For example, this could be due to the function not migrating from a non-prod region to the production (prod) region.
Removing all comments from the Select Query fixed this for me. My dataset was working in the Preview but when I went to Design/Query Designer and and tried the query there I was getting ORA-01006;bind variable does not exist. After removing all comments from the select it worked.
