Eclipse CDT: Mapping console output to source file and line - c

While debugging code it helps to have source filename and line number on console output. I already use FILE and LINE macros. But it would be great if double clicking a line in the console output would take me to the exact source line which was responsible for outputting that line of log. Can eclipse parse console output and do something like this? It need not work all the time, only when the log line is in a specific format and the source filename and line number are valid.

As noted there, I posted a query on the Eclipse forum to find out the status of any ongoing effort or obstacles to implement within Eclipse.
I could not find out any further information on the feature, if it's there, it's well hidden.

using GDB with arguments

For a class assignment we needed to write a compiler. This includes an optimizer portion. In other words, we take in a file with some "code". An output file is generated. In the second step we take in the outputted code and remove any "dead" code and re-output to a second file. I have some problems with the optimizer portion and would like to use gdb. But I can't get gdb to operate properly with the input and output files arguments. The way we would normally run the optimizer is:
./optimize <tinyL.out> optimized.out
where tinyL.out is the file outputted in the first step and optimized.out is the file I want to output with the new optimized and compiled code.
I have searched Google for the solution and the tips I have found do not seem to work for my situation. Most people seem to want to only accept an input file and not output a separate file as I need to do.
Any help is appreciated (of course)
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. But since I'm not yet able to comment everywhere, I write this answer with a guess and edit/delete if necessary.
When GDB is started and before you start the program you wish to debug, set the arguments you want to use with set args.

Frama-c: save plugin analysis results in c file

I'am new in frama-c. So I apologize in advance for my question.
I would like to make a plugin that will modify the source code, clone some functions, insert some functions calls and I would like my plugin to generate a second file that will contain the modified version of the input file.
I would like to know if it is possible to generate a new file c with frama-c. For example, the results of the Sparecode and Semantic constant folding plugins are displayed on the terminal directly and not in a file. So I would like to know if Frama-c has the function to write to a file instead of sending the result of the analysis to the standard output.
Of course we can redirect the output of frama-c to a file.c for example, but in this case, for the plugin scf for example, the results of value is there and I found that frama-c replaces for example the "for" loops by while.
But what I would like is that frama-c can generate a file that will contain my original code plus the modifications that I would have inserted.
I looked in the directory src / kernel_services / ast_printing but I have not really found functions that can guide me.

On the command line, option -ocode <file> indicates that any subsequent -print will be done in <file> instead of the standard output (use -ocode "" after that if you want to print on stdout again). Note that -print prints the code corresponding to the current project. You can use -then-on <prj> to change the project you're interested in. More information is of course available in the user manual.
All of this is of course available programmatically. In particular, File.pretty_ast by defaults pretty-prints (i.e. output a C program) the AST of the current project on stdout, but takes two optional argument for changing the project or the formatter to which the output should be done.

Lua loadfile not finding a file

I had some lua code with the following line:
JSON = loadfile("JSON.lua")()
The file JSON.lua is in the same directory as the lua code that line came from. This code worked for me for a while, and then, without my changing either the lua source, or the JSON.lua, or permission of any of the files, or the directory from where I was running the lua code, I started getting a nil error on that line. (I simply recall NO relevant changes that could have any impact on the lua code.)
Adding an assert revealed that the error was caused by the file not being found. Playing with file permissions, restarting my machine didn't resolve the issue, and pulling back code that I had checked in and was working perfectly did not resolve the error.
I resolved the error by changing the line above to provide the absolute path to that JSON.lua file.
Is there anything explaining why the code without the absolute path could have worked for a while and then stopped working?
Note: This behavior of working and then not working happened to me twice over a week. I am puzzled and though I have now found a fix, I am really curious as to the explanation for that intermittent behavior.
Lua uses package.path, whose default value comes from the environment variable LUA_PATH if it is set, as the list of directories to search. You can put . of the front of this list to load files from the current directory, or you can put your files in a path on the list.
A late answer on this, as I found exactly the same problem.
First, contrary to the previous answer, loadfile doesn't use the package.path search path. It only looks in the specified directory. And if you don't specify a directory, it only look in the 'current directory'. I can't explain exactly why it stopped working for you, but probably your Lua code is somehow being run with a different 'current directory' than previous.
There are two possible fixes: One is to specify an absolute path to loadfile.
JSON = loadfile("c:\\my_folder\\JSON.lua")()
The alternative fix depends on the particular library you're using, which I suspect is Jeffrey Friedl's Lua JSON lilbrary. Because this supports the newer Lua module mechanism, you can just load the module with require, which does support the package.path search path.
JSON = require("JSON")

Xcode change/remove comment template

Recently I've been learning how to program C. For most of the time, I have been using the C version of Eclipse. Recently, I tried out Xcode. I am using a Mac running Mac OS X Lion - Xcode version 4.1.
There is one grievance I have: at the top of every file that I create, there is this little section of comments that I wish to remove or better yet, change.
When I create a file, something like this is put at the top of the file by default:

Obviously the things in capitals would be replaced with an actual value. For those of you have use, or have used Xcode, for programming C - do you know a way of how to change or remove these default comments?

According to #Michael Dautermann 's comment below, change templates in Xcode.app bundle is not a good way. Check https://stackoverflow.com/a/33743/380774 for more information.
You can remove or change the header in File Templates, I'm using Xcode 4.3, and the File Templates is in /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Library/Xcode/Templates/File Templates.
Please do not edit files inside Xcode, that will break the application signature and will cause Xcode to refuse to start up after the next restart or so.
Create an IDETemplateMacros.plist file containing a dictionary with a FILEHEADER key (string) instead.
You can put the file in
for all users on a single project by dropping it in your project's or workspace's xcshareddata folder (e.g. MyAppWorkspace.xcworkspace/xcshareddata/IDETemplateMacros.plist)
for yourself for a single project by copying it into e.g MyAppWorkspace.xcworkspace/xcuserdata/YOURNAMEHERE.xcuserdatad
global for all projects that you open in your account by dropping the file in ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/UserData/
You can change it in Xcode project File.

nsinstall: Bad file number error on Vista

I'm attempting to build Firefox on my Windows Vista Ultimate machine. I keep getting the following error:
nsinstall: Bad file number

Using the standard "Run as Administrator", I've attempted to redo my build but I get the exact same error. I also started a normal command prompt as admin and then went to the batch file in mozilla-build (start-msvc8.bat) and ran it. Still, same error at the same point.
Any other insights on how I might either get around this error or perhaps something else is causing the error?
Note: I also posted something here in the hopes to get topic-specific help but I've not heard a peep... After I posted that I found the info on nsinstall. Anyway, I prefer SO so I thought I'd try here...
Update: I've attempted to completly disable UAC to correct the problem as is suggested by cnemelkasr. I've received the exact same error. This new knowledge is making me think that a file or folder is missing... Does anyone who has experience with NSInstall know what the given error -- Bad file number -- might mean? I figure it might be referring to a file handle...
If it really is a UAC error, you can try turning off UAC altogether. I've had to do this for several packages. There are numerous places on the web to get the instructions for doing that.

I found the answer to my question. I'm posting the answer here to share the answer with others and to close this question.
After disabling the UAC, it was suggested that the directory depth was interfering with NSInstall. I moved the folder from c:/Users/Frank/Documents/hg-repos/firefox-src-hgRepo/mozilla-fv-expirement/ to C:/mozilla-fv-expirement/. Cleaned all previous build attempts and finally redid my build (with UAC off) and I received a working debug binary.

The "Bad file number" message in the cases I have seen, is caused by too many arguments passed to execvp (command, argv) (or similar) function. But only from some programs. An old bash, sh or a Borland/Watcom program in your PATH is an likely candidate.
So when you shorten the name of the build directory, the total size of the command line (that eventually gets passed to CreateProcess()) gets shorter. I don't think UAC has anything to do with this since I've seen this on Win-XP too. But it's a bit strange Mozilla would not use relative paths while building. I guess it uses some directory prefix value in it's makefiles (I've never tried building it).

The space required for the arguments and environment settings exceeds 32 KB.
Now, here is the strange part.
Fact 1:
On Visual-C/MingW (any version), strerror(EBADF) doesn't return "Bad file number" .
(it return "Bad file descriptor").
Fact 2:
On Borland's CBuilder 5.6 and Watcom 1.9 (these do not use the MSVC runtime), strerror(EBADF) does indeed return "Bad file number".
Theory:
Is possible that Borland, Watcom (and other CRTs too?) mixes up the meaning of E2BIG and EBADF. Did that make any sense? Someone please correct me if you have a better theory.
I'm a bit confused myself...
Conclusion: Either shorten the size of your environment (easiest) or shorten the command-line (not always easy).
