Why Rename in C not working correctly? - c

It was working correctly a while ago. But i dont know what was is the error.
My Code:

Remove function works correctly but my rename function does not work.

From ISO/IEC9899:
7.19.4.2 The rename function
Synopsis

int rename(const char *old, const char *new);
As you can see by the prototype: you are using the old and new arguments in the wrong place.
Just switch then and one error is fixed.
If there is still one... Tell us the error text please.

I think you have the rename() call backwards. It should be:
rename(oldfn, newfn);
Although it wouldn't hurt to have copied the error message in the first place!

Why is Ghidra appending a memory address to a string that is displayed instead of a variable?

This is my first time using Ghidra and debugging. My project deals with reverse engineering a Dos executable from 2007, to understand how it generates a code.
I looked for the strings I can read when launching the program through wine (debugging under linux) and found one place :

I named the function "DISPLAY_MESSAGE" because I saw the string on the screen ;-). I would like to name it printf but its signature does not match the one of printf since it takes byte * instead of char *, ... as input parameters and returns an int instead of void for the actual printf.
The string "Code = %s" (stripping the CRs and new lines) is actually located at address "0040704c", and I am very surprised not to see the variable holding the generated code value instead (that could help me rename the variables).
If I change the signature to the one of printf it yields :
DISPLAY_MESSAGE(s__Code_=_%s_0040704c,local_8)
which looks better, because local_8 could be the code, but I don't know if it is correct to change the signature like this (since then the local variable that I renamed errorCode is never used whereas it was returned before signature change).

So my questions are :
Why is Ghidra appending _0040704c to the string (should it help me, and how should I make use of this piece of info) ?
If my signature change is correct, what prevents Ghidra from finding the correct signature from its analysis ?
Should I think there is a problem with the function signature whenever I see undefinedX as it appears in DISPLAY_MESSAGE ?
Any help greatly appreciated!

protoc-c: Nested structure with optional string throws seg fault

Trying out Google protocol buffers for my code in C language.

I compile it as gcc -o testout messagefile.pb-c.c simpleexample.c -lprotobuf-c
The Problem I am facing is when trying to initialize the nested othermessage variables and then call the get_packed_size it throws a segmentation fault.
I tried various combinations and I can say that whenever having strings in a nested class, I am facing problem to access those using google protoc.
Am i missing something? Is there anything wrong.

Err... they are kinda hard to ignore since your code does not compile :-)
Anyway, apart from the syntax errors, you need to make several corrections to your code. In order to use the field otr_message, it is not sufficient to just malloc() it. You also need to initialize it so the headers in the message get the right values. This is done with init(), like this:

Then you use the wrong function to do the packing to your own array. As explained here, you need to use pack() as opposed to pack_to_buffer(), like this:

Finally, your strncpy() invocations have a mistake. The length calculated with strlen() does not include the null terminator, which you do need. So you need to take strlen()+1 or use sizeof(), like this:

After making those changes, the example worked for me:

What is the signature of mainCRTStartup

I am looking for the signature of mainCRTStartup. Is it :

Or something else ?
I find it so irritating that microsoft isn't even able to give the définition of their own entry points...

In the crtexe.c file, distributed with VisualStudio, you can see the definition. It is:
int mainCRTStartup(void);
The command line is not obtained as an argument to the entry point, but recovered by using the function GetCommandLine().

How to call threadsafe rrd_update_r Round Robin Database function with C API?

Can anybody help me to find out how to call rrd_update_r function of the rrdtool c API from http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/index.en.html?
It was quite easy to call the non-threadsafe version of rrd_update, but this one is more tricky...
normal rrd_update:

Because the programm has to run in a multithreaded environment I got several errors by not using the threadsafe functions!
But it is not so easy to use rrd_update_r, because it requires a template too...

Well, looking at the source code...
It appears that rrd_update_r does not want to see the "rrupdate" argument. So try just passing rrd_file and values as a 2-element argv.
Actually the source for rrd_update is not hard to read; you can find it in src/rrd_update.c. And rrd_update_r appears to be a much lower-level function that rrd_update itself calls. So this may not actually fix your underlying problem.

Updated: When to "mortalize" a variable in Perl Inline::C

I am trying to wrap a C library into Perl. I have tinkered with XS but being unsuccessful I thought I should start simply with Inline::C. My question is on Mortalization. I have been reading perlguts as best as I am able, but am still confused. Do I need to call sv_2mortal on an SV* that is to be returned if I am not pushing it onto the stack?
(PS I really am working on a less than functional knowledge of C which is hurting me. I have a friend who knows C helping me, but he doesn't know any Perl).
I am providing a sample below. The function FLIGetLibVersion simply puts len characters of the library version onto char* ver. My question is will the version_return form of my C code leak memory?

In an attempt to answer this myself, I tried changing the line to
SV* ret = sv_2mortal(newSVpv(ver, strlen(ver)));
and now when I run the script I get the same output that I did previously plus an extra warning. Here is the output:

I imagine that this means that I don't need to mortalize in this case? I suspect that the error is saying that I marked for collection something that was already in line for collection. Can someone confirm for me that that is what that warning means?
I've been maintaining Set::Object for many years and had this question, too - perhaps best to look at the source of that code to see when stuff should be mortalised (github.com/samv/Set-Object). I know Set::Object has it right after many changes. I think though, it's whenever you're pushing the SV onto the return stack. Not sure how Inline changes all that.
